5 out of 5 stars seminal recording aka Night At The Village Vanguard.......2002-01-10

This is a great recording! The only problem I had with it was that I did not know that Nov. 3, 1957 was the very same night that the Blue Note "Complete Night At The Village Vanguard" recordings were made. Therefore, if you already own the complete release, or Vol. 1 and Vol. 2., buying this won't help your collection. The sound quality is not noticably different. If you don't have the Blue Notes and you want to buy this, go for it, the music is great. This is one of the best sax-bass-drums trio recordings of all time.

    5 out of 5 stars I concur................2006-09-24

....with Dr. Groothius! Whilst I may not agree in total, regarding today's culture "vacuum," I do agree that there is far too little brilliant musical "art" extant in the venues creating same today! Nonetheless, this sonically superb live recording is nothing short of genius,.. whatever the time frame. If you are a jazz aficianado and especially, if your favor Mssrs. Mingus and/or Dolphy you MUST OWN this incredible example of Audio Jazz NIRVANA!

5 out of 5 stars Live jazz combustion rarely seen or heard today........2000-07-16

This was one of Mingus's best bands, captured live before an attentive and involved audience in 1960. Eric Dolphy, reed and flute wizard, figures prominently throughout, but all the musicians are engaged and highly animated. The musical chemistry is palpable.

Charles Mingus was an explosive person. He was known for a bad temper, but could verbally cheer on fellow musicians in touching and exhilerating manner. You can hear him do so throughout the pieces.

The group arrangements are challenging and sometimes complex, with several tempos changes and unexpected ensemble forms, all of which I find deeply satisfying and worthy of repeated listening.

The group was in top form, the music is essential Mingus. I am thankful these beautiful moments were preserved for us, some forty years later in midst of our aesthetically impoverished culture.

      Amazon.com essential recording

Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, this set rounded out what became known as an early "full" portrait of Bill Evans by following Sunday at the Village Vanguard with most of the rest of the music he played on June 25, 1961. Very little in the annals of piano-trio jazz ever reached the clarity of execution that Evans made his own with the recordings from this single date. With bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, Evans reached a rapport that sounded whisper-intimate, rolling into gentle cascades and then rhythmically pouncing juts. On the keys, Evans sounds at once completely walled-off and nakedly open as he takes on "My Foolish Heart" and the title melody. The chords are voiced ever so oddly, as are the bass and drums. Coming as it did several months in the wake of the successful first episode in Evans's Vanguard, Waltz for Debby just made it all the more obvious what a wonder the world had in this trio and its leader. --Andrew Bartlett

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Bittersweet! A Can't Miss! .......2007-06-24

I can't believe this is a 'live' recording. I can't believe how great this is. I can't believe how great of a trio this was! If you are a fan of great music, no matter what the genre, and you have semi-decent taste in music, then purchase this one immediately. While you are at it, you might as well purchase "Sunday at the Village Vanguard", the other classic recording by the trio from the same session in June of 1961. Both of these recordings are essential to not just a jazz fan's collection, but any collector of great music.

It is such a shame that LaFaro died tragically ten days after this memorable performance. You don't often hear his name mentioned when you hear people discussing the greatest bass players of all-time. However, after listening to these two albums, there is no denying that his performance was just as great as any other performance by the legendary jazz bassists (i.e. Ray Brown, Jaco, Chambers, Mingus, et al...). It's simply beyond definition! And yes, I am referring to a bass player folks. Only heaven knows how great his career could have been had his life not ended so abruptly.

The splendid, swan-song performance by LaFaro, does in no way overshadow the fine work by Bill Evans himself and drummer Paul Motian. Motian compliments his two pals perfectly with his silky, serene brush strokes and his laid back, unassuming style. While Bill Evans is just, well... Bill Evans. The man was simply a genius. I can listen to him play all night long. This is perfect music to listen and lounge to, or be in a lounge and listen to (of course sipping on some cocktails while you're at it). It is also great music to read to and one of my favorites to play right before I go to sleep at night. It always fills my heart and mind full of harmony and peace.

      Six Stars If I Could!

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets.......2007-01-11

The reviews look a bit excessive, don't they? They're not. Wonderful beyond words.

      5 out of 5 stars Truely move.......2006-10-23

Bill evans is famous for his melody , his harmony , his tone . His jazz is not depict the technique side , he is just like a poet , he makes the jazz music into the deeper side , and made it more rich. In this live concert , we can really see , just a simple note can moves us .

5 out of 5 stars In memoriam of a poet!.......2006-05-11

Bill Evans constituted the great exponent of the lyrical jazz, expressed in the intimacy of small Halls (as the Blue Note). His inspirational mood and captivating expression created an atmosphere of ineludible seduction.

He was a true poet and remark this epithet in the sense of creator of new possibilities and lyrical hues. His early loss left many unfinished projects as to record a whole session with Oscar Peterson (imagine that dream come true);but at least he left the best of his craft for the posterity.

Waltz for Debby was arguably, his best referential card, a sublime work loaded of exquisite lyricism and sumptuous refinement.
      An album to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Actually Six or Seven Stars or maybe Eight..........2006-02-01

The definition of a piano jazz trio. I'll leave it to people who know what they are talking about to describe the technicalities of the music. For the layperson, this is piano jazz at its best. I can't get enough Evans, but if I had to take one Evans recording to the proverbial desert island...this is it. The title track is, maybe, my favorite piece of music of any sort. It's light, it's buoyant, it's whimsical, it's melancholy, it's playful, it's timeless, it's Bill Evans, Scott Lofaro and Paul Motian making magic. If for some reason you are on the fence about this recording, climb down off the fence, punch the appropriate keys and order this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Legends Turn Up....Hear Here !!.......2000-10-25

Bill Chase,Sal Nistico,Nat Pierce...YES, it's the mid-sixties band that time and Phillips Records forgot!! Although we have to hunt through the catalog and info is sketchy, Amazon found this beauty and I'll never regret having "gambled" my $8.97 on it!! This was the band that debuted in 1963 and immediately grabbed the grammy for best big-band album: We get "Four Brothers," with Sal Nistico, Gary Klein, Andy McGhee and Tom Anastas soloing; Ron Myers replaces Phil Wilson in the bone section, with Don Doane and Henry Southall; Nat Pierce-piano, Tony Leonardi-bass, and Ronnie Zito-drums make up the rhythm section; and Woody's "stand-up firing squad" of a trumpet section was Bill Chase, Gerry Lamy, Don Rader, Bobby Shew and Dusko Goykovich!! (Hold onto anything you don't want BLOWN AWAY!!). We also get some of the best charts of this period, too. There are great Nat Pierce arrangements of Gene Roland's "Wailin' In The Woodshed," (which didn't seem to translate well to the liner notes), "Watermelon Man," "Satin Doll" and Oscar Peterson's "Hallelujah Time." Bill Chase contributes "23 Red" and "Somewhere," plus there's Horace Silver's "The Preacher," "Early Autumn" (with Gary Klein in the spot made famous by Stan Getz), "Northwest Passage" and "Caldonia" at nearly-unplayable tempos, and one of my favorite things: Dusko Goykovich's arrangement of Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford," and his playing of it, is one of the great jazz solos of all time. Hey, the WHOLE ALBUM is great, whaddya' EXPECT??

Recorded live at Antibes, on the French Mediterranean, in July, 1965, this is a very well-recorded album and lets the band's REAL SOUND be heard. (LOTS of engineers tried to soften the brass section on Woody's recordings, with results all the way down to a record sounding like "solo 3rd tenor sax"). Happily, there's NONE of that here. ( Now, if Phillips could just find those missing masters...or get a clue what they're sitting on...). ENJOY THIS!! It's the HARDEST-SWINGING big band there ever WAS!!
