Excellent and unique........2006-09-30

This is one of the best collections of Mozart's wind concerti played on original instruments. Thomas Crawford's Orchestra of the Old Fairfield Academy plays with beauty, gorgeous tone, transparency, grace, enthusiasm and apparent love of the music. The soloists are without exception excellent, and play either on original instruments or (more commonly) on instruments reconstructed from period models. Sandra Miller does a wonderful job on the flute concerti (playing with a sweetness and love unusual in performances of these pieces), as does Marc Schachman on the oboe concerti and Dennis Godburn on the bassoon.

But special mention has to go to the two unique concerti groups in this release: the clarinet concerto and the horn concerti. For the clarinet concerto, soloist Eric Hoeprich reconstructed Mozart's original performance version for the bassett clarinet, and went so far as to build his own bassett clarinet based on an engraving of the one played by the concerto's original soloist, Anton Stadler. Not only does Hoeprich's instrument sound gorgeous and mellow, it permits him to play several passages an octave lower than we are used to hearing. The result is not only one of the most beautiful performances of this gorgeous piece I've heard, it is also one which, after the initial shock of hearing something unfamiliar, just sounds completely "right." Listening to other performances based on Mozarts' revision of the piece for standard clarinet, I am now aware of how Mozart had to split octaves on certain phrases and how much better it sounds in the original, "un-split" version. For this reason alone one should buy this set.

The horn concerti were also gone over, revised based on Mozart's autograph versions where available, and in some cases reconstructed and rescored by Mozart specialist Robert Levin. Levin has played improvisations on Mozart's piano pieces and he seems to have absorbed the composer's musical language and spirit to an astonishing degree. The pieces sound new and fresh, in many cases more "Mozartian" than the versions we've come to know (several of which involved revisions by Mozart's pupil Sussmayer -- I've got to say Levin seems to know Mozart better than Sussmayer did!). The performances by RJ Kelly and the orchestra are all first-rate. In addition, the disc includes a separate performance of the Rondo-Allegro to the Concerto K412 which includes Mozart's written running commentary of insults to the original soloist Joseph Luetgeb -- fun to listen to once at least.

I'm sorry to see this set is not as easily available as it once was. It really should be at the top of your list for all of these concerti. Buy it if you can find it.

Stephen Hough is a genius.......2003-09-01

Spectacular pianist. Stephen Hough takes technique to a new level. Crisp, clear notation with beautiful phrasing and unbelievable dexterity. At times, it seems as though these pieces were composed for four-hand piano. This the album which first captivated my ear for Hough.

Just Some Info About This Recording.......1999-05-11

I think the reason this recording is out of stock is that the content is duplicated by the Stephen Hough's CD entitled "The Piano Album". Perhaps it was simply reissued under a different name.

Hough is definitely good to listen to, and this album is a collection of light little pieces that he can have some fun with. There are quite a few short pieces that are hard to find in other "all time favorite" collections.

More interesting (and--predictably--less mechanical) than his piano rolls, Gershwin Performs Gershwin showcases the Gershwin-conducted rehearsal sessions for Second Rhapsody and Porgy and Bess along with two Gershwin radio specials recorded in the early '30s titled Music by Gershwin. These are period pieces, for sure--the sound is shoddy, and the radio spots' commercials are as entrancing as the music that's being played. But, yes, that is Gershwin conducting and playing piano, and this is as close as we'll get to hearing these familiar tunes being played the way he wanted them. --Jason Verlinde

Powerful music, but not for the faint of heart.......2004-02-04

Nobody plays the classical guitar quite like Elliot Fisk. Perhaps that's why Luciano Berio chose to write one of his famously difficult Sequenzas for him. From the opening bars of Scarlatti sonata, Fisk puts the listener on notice that this is not going to be an album of quiet background music to play during dinner (as so many classical guitar recordings seem destined to become). This is an album of powerfully, even theatrically, performed music for the classical guitar. If Vladimir Horowitz had been a classical guitarist, he might have sounded something like Fisk. Tempi and dynamics are often taken to extremes, clean articulation can be sacrificed for power and speed when necessary. While a Parkening or a Williams might have an overall more impressive technique than Fisk, their performances tend to be smooth and restrained, rarely matching the heart-on-the-sleeve passion of Fisk. That's not to say that Fisk's interpretations are necessarily superior, just very, very different.

Few, if any, of the pieces on this album are part of the standard classical guitar repertoire making it a great acquisition for classical guitar fans looking for something new. Of the older pieces, the Mendelssohn songs without words are particularly lovely, and remarkably coherent as a whole despite being taken from several different song cycles composed years apart. The Scarlatti sonatas are also quite engaging, especially the first, which is given surprisingly modern treatment.

And then there's the Sequenza itself. I won't lie: it will be tough listening for those not familiar with 20th century post-tonal music. But once you get past the jarring harmonies, it becomes apparent that it is a amazingly well-written piece, particularly for a composer who was not himself a guitarist. Berio has taken idioms of the classical guitar literature and used them to construct a piece that is utterly modern in terms of harmony, melody and rhythm, and yet clearly rooted in the classical guitar tradition and vocabulary. As for Fisk performance, virtuosic is the only word to describe it, although this may only be fully apparent to those familiar with classical guitar technique (the tone-cluster chords that appear throughout the score are quite difficult to voice on the guitar, requiring some serious finger stretching and contortion).

But even if Berio's avant garde music is not to your taste, I would still highly recommend this album for all the other wonderful music it contains. For those used to Parkening and Willaims, this disc should be a truly eye-opening experience.

Eliot Brisk's silly ascot and shameless attempts to leech onto Segovia's grand legacy are simply inappropriate.

I couldn't agree with "terrible"'s review more. Check out Williams, Galbraith, Barrueco, Russell and of course the real Segovia, not the ersatz one.

Beg to differ with "Terrible".......2004-04-15

Quite simply put, as a guitarist Eliot Fisk is in a class by himself. He plays the instrument like no one else, can create an array of timbres, reveal the architecture of a work, and project an expressive range beyond anyone playing the instrument today. Yes, people love to hate him, and yes there are other players who make the instrument sound more "beautiful". Guess what? These debates are normal and certainly not confined to the classical quitar world. I am not surprised that a young guitarist might have problems with him, and feel it necessary to lose perspective on what makes him unique. But as someone who knows a great deal about music from the inside, I feel obligated to say that to start to question his meeting basic "standards of acceptable interpretation" is so way out of line that it is laughable. Fisk's musical training is impeccable--besides the well-known Segovia relationship, he has been a protege of the great harpsichordist and Scarlatti expert Ralph Kirkpatrick - and his intellect formidable. Here is a real musician who has earned the respect and admiration and has collaborated with some of the most revered concert artists of our time. If someone prefers another player, that is his or her perogative (Barruecco is certainly a remarkable guitarist, and has produced some important work). But Fisk is, well, Fisk. Make up your own mind. Just, please, don't miss the forest for the trees.

I won't talk about the paganini, as I already reviewed that album (and it was awful). As for the rest of the works on this disk, anyone who knows anything about classical music or anything about the fundamentals of guitar playing will quickly realize that Fisk falls embarrassingly short on so many levels it's ridiculous. There are certain standards of acceptable interpretation, rhythmic accuracy, cleanliness (there are MISTAKES on this CD!!), and tone quality, all of which Fisk grossly fails to meet. The unfortunate thing is that the guitar community as a whole doesn't seem to care about these things. If Fisk played any other instrument, he would not have a career. If you want to hear these pieces played well, I suggest you try David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, John Williams, Jason Vieaux, Pepe Romero, or Paul Galbraith. The difference between these players and Fisk is obvious.

Multi-talented Fisk.......2003-11-15

I've heard Fisk in person three times. The director of the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival said that when Eliot Fisk is coming, he tells him who else will be available that weekend, and lets him suggest the groupings and music. The last time, I heard guitar and harp play a work originally for organ, and guitar and viola play Beaser's Barbara Allen which is on this CD as guitar and flute. Fisk is a great talent, and this CD illustrates it well.
