I'm in the Mood for Love...The Most Romantic Melodies of All Time is Kenny G's twist on the trend that's found artists, from Rod Stewart to Gladys Knight to Barry Manilow, repurposing classics for modern consumption. Or is it? A scan of the track selection is as likely to get listeners wondering whether he's covered these songs before as it is to drum up curiosity about how they'll sound spiraling out of his signature sax. For instance: silky as "The Way We Were," the Barbra Streisand chestnut, comes across, it stirs a sense of déjà vu as much as wonderment; as does the Sinatra medley "Fly Me to the Moon/You Make Me Feel So Young." Such familiarity is without doubt the product of impeccable taste and a seasoned ear--somebody, whether it's Kenny G or a behind-the-scenes studio type, knows what works for the curly-topped jazzman and what's better left un-saxed. Still, such scrutiny can make for a disc that's aurally matchy-match; a stab at an out-there number--Etta James' "At Last" or U2's "With or Without You"--might have worked, too. That said, hats off to the G-man for pronouncing a couple of recent hits among the most romantic of all time: Alicia Keys "If I Ain't Got You" deserves it especially, and is mesmerizing here. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars A Romantic CD to Listen With a Loved One..........2007-05-29

For me, Kenny G's albums are a hit or miss. This is a hit. Here we got 13 songs, ranging from standards to torch songs. Kenny G also plays tenor saxophone a bit more than his previous recordings.

Highlights include "You're Beautiful", "Yesterday", "I'm in the Mood for Love", The Way You Look Tonight, & an interesting version of Alicia Keys's "If I Aint Got You" (however alto saxman Eric Darius's version is better).

The surprise tracks however is "The Shadow of Your Smile" & "Fly Me to the Moon/You Make Me Feel So Young". The former has a bossa nova favor to it while the latter is done behind a big band.

This album will not appear to everyone; most purists & anti-Kenny G people won't touch this with a 39 1/2 foot pole. For the rest of us, this is great for those nights with that special someone.

4 out of 5 stars Getting In The Mood.......2007-05-29

Everyone gets in the mood for love every now and then.So when that mood hits you it"s so nice to have Kenny G"s "I"m In The Mood For Love" comming to your rescue.Along with that someone special in your life.Compiling a list of great romantic melodies is no easy task. With so many great romantic melodies to choose from. But Kenny G does manage to put together a good list of songs.Kenny G mixes some old songs in with some not so old songs. And the end result is a wonderful melody of sound. All design to get and keep you in that special mood for love. Now all these songs have been recorded before. But on this album Keeny G gives us his very own romantic interpertations of classics like "I"m In The Mood For Love","If" and "The Way We Were".The album gets off to a good start with James Blunt "You"re Beautiful" very nicey done by Mr G.And he takes it soft and easy on the songs "Yesterday" and "The Shadow Of Your Smile".He picks it up a bit on the songs "Fly Me To The Moon" and "You Make Me Feel So Young".These two songs bring back memories of Frank Sinatra. And the song I like the most on the album "The Way You Look Tonight" I think this song as a great feeling to it.I ready like this album but like so many other Kenny G fans.I can"t wait until he does his next album of original music. But until then just sit back with a cool glass of wine and enjoy this music by yourself or with someone you love.

5 out of 5 stars just sit back and enjoy.......2007-05-26

This latest cd by Kenny G is one that will make you just sit back and enjoy. That special someone and a glass of wine helps to add to the mood that is set when listening to this cd. This cd might just bring back some of those special memories. Can't go wrong with this one. True romantics will love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars As good as ever.......2007-02-11

If you have always liked Kenny G's music, you will like this album. He has taken a long break from new studio recordings, but this album proves he hasn't ignored his instrument during his hiatus! Everyone is doing standards these days, and they lend themselves well to Kenny G's style. Recommended!

The genius of At Last...The Duets Album is in its matchups and cross-pollinations. If producer Walter Afanasieff weren't already a much sought after music man--check out his arrangements here if his talents are unfamiliar--he might have built a brilliant career as a modern-day cupid. These are covers with a what-if factor (what if Brian McKnight covers Wham!? What if Richard Marx covered Elton John?) you don't want to miss: LeAnn Rimes wraps Bryan Adams' anthem-y "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" in rainy-day heartache; Yolanda Adams reaches for the stars in a rendition of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" as inspiring as the original; Barbra Streisand waltzes through "The Music That Makes Me Dance" like the years since her heyday haven't mattered; and Earth, Wind & Fire dig the depth out of Raphael Saadiq's "The Way You Move." This, of course, is to say nothing of the sensuality brought to these collaborations by the goldilocked sax man himself. As with all Kenny G projects, the music is smoother than a frappuccino and oddly suited to a soap opera living room set; its swirls, swells, and crescendos seem meant to fall on bejeweled ears in pretty, carefully appointed spaces only. All-instrumental tracks like "Don't Know Why" with David Benoit and "Pick Up the Pieces" with David Sanborn have a fun look-at-me-sharing-the-spotlight quality, but in the end Chaka Khan puts across her point most convincingly: She, not Christina Aguilera, should have sung "Beautiful" to begin with. -Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Nice change.......2006-12-13

You know it's sad when someone has to put down another person just to make them feel bigger. I found this album was a fresh change to doing cover songs - face it, everyone in the industry is doing covers, but I really liked the different feel to them. There are some not so great Duet albums out there, unfortunately I have even bought a few, but I feel this one is a good buy...

5 out of 5 stars Kenny G- Duets.......2006-11-10

Kenny G is excellent in this duets CD. Him along with other greats make for very enjoyable listening.

1 out of 5 stars Kenny G is a horrible saxophonist.......2006-08-14

Please noone buy this cd. It is a waste of your time, and the fact that so many people buy this cd goes along with how humans are getting more idiotic as we destroy the planet and continue to rise conflicts in other countries that could amount to a bigger picture. Kenny G is a horrible saxophonist, and all he plays are simplistic lines that people can wrap their heads around easily. If you want to listen to a great saxophonist, listen to Kenny Garret. Or Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane, Joshua Redman, Wayne Shorter. If you like smooth jazz, Gerald Albright is an excellent saxophonist to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice! My favorite CD of his yet...........2006-06-17

I always find it humerous that far less accomplished "musicians" will blast Kenny's success all over the place, and basically rate him with the likes of a middle school wannabe. Bottom line - he is successful, he caters to the "average" listener without the ear fatigue that normally accompanies heavy jazz, he is respected among his peers in the business (as evidenced by his duets), and he repeats what works for his success. To trash his talent and success is to also trash the notable musicians and singers who obviously respect him enough to record with him on this CD. He's made millions, so there is an enormous fan base out there that doesn't care much for the jealous comments by aspiring performers. My advice is to judge for yourself!

If you appreciate great musicians coming together to produce some really listenable music, (and I do mean, over and over without ear fatigue), then this CD is for you! I only hope he doesn't stop here. I hope he comes out with more duet albums in the future. Maybe some Chicago, Rascal Flatts, Peter Cetera, Tower of Power, and any number of other great voices in the business!

My favorite is the remix of "The Way You Move"...nice grooves in there! If I had one complaint, it would be that the songs didn't actually line up in the order on which they were listed on the CD cover. Other than that, it's at the top of my favorites in my library of 3,000+ CDs!

1 out of 5 stars It is OK ! Next time, team up with Anita Baker and Regina Belle !.......2006-05-28

The CD is great, it has so many wonderful songs and they cover several decades.

1 out of 5 stars Borng!.......2006-07-29

This muzak is really boring. Totally devoid of all energy and expression, just a lot of long notes and vibrato. Plus Kenny totally ruined Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" on the second disc.

It's really insulting that G would get a recording of the late Louis Armstrong singing, overdub some sax on it and call it a collaboration (Kenny G with Louis Armstrong). Louis never agreed to record with Kenny G, but I suppose the fact that he's no longer alive made it easier for Kenny to use his singing in the track

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful IntroTo MEHDl.......2006-06-28

I've always enjoyed Kenny G and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of MEHDl (pronounced medie). After an online search I found their site (S00THINGMUSIC,C0M) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Kenny G fan, I find MEHDl to be a great addition to this CD. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

Like its predecessors, Kenny G's latest album, Breathless, is a collection of tuneful, easy-listening instrumentals baited with a couple of pop-soul vocal numbers. This album is built on Kenny G's most obvious strengths: his knack for writing hummable pop hooks and his ability to play those radio-friendly melodies in a breathy, fluid style that invites the listener to lie back and relax. When it comes to background music that's slightly catchier and peppier than most new age music, Kenny G is a master of his genre. The titles of Kenny G's instrumentals on are a good clue to his approach: "Sentimental," "The Joy of Life," "Forever in Love" and "The Wedding Song." Sentimental, in the sense of simplifying life to a set of comfortable feelings, is a good adjective for Kenny G's music, for even his wordless instrumentals push the listener's warm glow buttons while ignoring anything more complicated. The saxophonist himself programmed many of the drum, bass and keyboard parts on Breathless, contributing to the sense that everything's running on autopilot. --Jeffrey Himes

I walked down the aisle to "Forever in Love" instead of the traditional wedding march and used many other songs on the "tape" at the time - I bought the Cd so we would have a better copy for our upcoming 12th anniversary - this collection will always be a treasured memory and timeless selections of wonderful romantic and peaceful music. Always treasured, Kenny G

4 out of 5 stars Best Of The Weather Channel.......2006-08-02

I first heard this music on The Weather Channel, and it was one of the sole reasons I watched TWC almost religiously...AS A 10 YEAR OLD!

I found it at a neighbor's yard sale, thinking it was a cheap bargain, and the minute I popped it in, all the memories came back to me.

I'm not a fan of Kenny G, but I love this CD, particularly "End Of The Night," my favorite Kenny G track of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth.......2006-06-28

Born Kenneth Gorelick, Kenny G is probably the best known American saxophonist. He rose to fame in the 1980s, and has gone places no other jazz musician has gone - in 2003, Kenny G was named the 25th-highest selling artist in America by the RIAA! Some dislike what he has done in the name of jazz, but it is hard to argue with success.

In fact, I love the smooth sound of Kenny G, and like this album immensely. Probably my favorite song on the album is his wonderful Forever In Love. Overall, I think that this is a great album. If you like the smooth jazzy sound of Kenny G, you'll like this CD. I highly recommend it!

Kenny G is often quoted as defending his crowd-pleasing sound as instrumental pop, not jazz (despite having taken his turn at the music of Ellington, Monk, and other masters on 1999's Classics in the Key of G). Whatever--you certainly know by now whether or not you like this stuff. The multiplatinum smooth-sax man, though, has charted a steady course of blandness broken only by the occasional obnoxious foray into something he seems to think is funk. This CD of popular favorites brings every emotion down to the level of the Weather Channel-ready "Songbird," which made G a radio staple in 1987: whether accompanying Sinatra via technology or defacing the memory of Sam Cooke with the egregious Michael Bolton, it's all white noise. --Rickey Wright

I don't know jazz music. Although personal preferences differ I found that many low-rating reviews here indicate his unskillful performance. Well, in the eye of a layman, I think he performs well enough. The ambiance this album creates is soft, comfortable, and soothing. Play this album and enjoy the peace in your mind!

where do i start??...... kenny g is a horrible saxophonist and a waste of space that does not deserve to be making cd's -- every song is the same and his tone is horrible !!! If you want to hear lameass music that has no musical form or structure than feel free to buy this , but before you do check out boney james -- now thats a good sax player!!!:)

1 out of 5 stars Jazz ?.......2006-01-07

Something that really pisses me off is that everybody who give 5-stars to Kenny G. say he is the greatest jazz musician. You make two mistakes: first Kenny G himself says he doesn't play jazz and he has very limited musical skills.I bet you are not even musicians , so how can you evaluate his skills? Personally I spend 5 hours (often more) everyday listening to true jazz masters (John Coltrane , Wes Mongomery , Kenny Burell , Grant Green , Charlie Christian , Django Reinhardt , ... ) and trying to imitate their sound and style , so I know what I am talking about a little bit more than a bunch of lame-ass housewives who listen to "jazz" once a week when they are sitting in their tub with their latest gardener (or plumber or whatsoever).Sad but true.

5 out of 5 stars Kenny G.......2005-12-11

Now I'll admit alot of Kenny G's music is background music. I am a big fan of Kenny G and found that listening to his music that if you listen really closely his sound echoes, such as one of his most popular like Songbird. Songbird is a really bad echoing. But I'll admit Kenny G's music does relieve stress. It is soothing to listen to this music. And although he does background music like this on his album that doesn't mean he doesn't perform good at his concerts and stuff. I was also passing through some other reviews and one of them talked about how this wasn't a good greatest hits. I can agree with that. Where is "Esther" at and "The wedding song" and many others. I'll admit Kenny G is not the best jazz artists. If you want good jazz artists I'll tell you. Soul ballet just came out with one called Dream Ballet Dream, although soul ballet is really not a saxophone type but more of a piano. Ya'll should check that out. Listen to their music from Kenny G's, notice there music doesn't echo alot, telling you that this is not music being played in the background. Another artists is James Vargas, he's not known by many people but ya'll should check him out also. I listen to his album about everyday. It is really good. I love it. Also you might wanna check out Nils and Greg Adams. There good too, also Boney James if you don't know about him and Pamela willaims, she's a good woman jazz artists. That's just too name some. There are many others out there. Go to smoothjazz.com and click on top 50 chart. That sight will tell you about some very good jazz artists for all you people who are locked in to Kenny G. But I ask you please check out James Vargas, that's the link. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002DRE4A/qid=1134271677/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-7687008-6756715?v=glance&s=music&n=507846, he is trying to get his 1st album promoted and i figured out about him from Xm radio, the channel is Watercolors, his album is self titled James Vargas and he is pretty soothing to the ears, rather then listening to Kenny G. And please I ask you I am just posting my opinon about what I think about this album, I'm not trying to start up anything or nothing like that.

Amazon.com essential recording

Offering a tribute to composers of previous generations, soprano saxophonist Kenny G uses his 11th career release to present his interpretations of various standards and assorted chestnuts from the past century. G's approach is as smooth and gentle as ever, and anyone in the market for mild-mannered, relaxing jazz should be satisfied with this package. Highlights include a slowly evolving version of George Gershwin's "Summertime," with George Benson on guitar, and a largely respectful rendering of Monk's "'Round Midnight." Subdued orchestral backing is used throughout the recording, and two vocal selections are included: a "duet" with the Louis Armstrong vocal track from "What a Wonderful World," and the subdued samba of "The Girl from Ipanema," which features singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of the song's original vocalists. That selection is reprised instrumentally on an uncredited, nonindexed 11th track that is heard about 20 seconds after the conclusion of Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow." Languid listening from start to finish. --Terry Wood

1 out of 5 stars Music For People Who Hate Music.......2006-02-20

It's always close by, like the threat of nuclear war. In the frozen food section of your supermarket, in the elevator of your office building, wafting through the lobbies of hotels and corridors of conference centers. It bears an eerie resemblance to music, as wax fruit resembles something nourishing, as paintings of sad clowns with large liquid eyes and dogs playing poker resemble Guernica and Crows On A Wheatfield, as a lightning bug resembles lightning.

In a way, this is perhaps forgivable. Everything Henry Miller ever said about American bread is true, it's really unfit for anything except perhaps blotting up spilled ink. But there are those people who like bologna on Wonderbread, and why shouldn't they have their fun - or more properly - lack of fun? Perhaps Wonderbread is the only appropriate delivery mechanism for peanut butter and jelly. So be it.

In this context one can attempt to excuse the chain of albums churned out by Mr. G, like so many spiceless sausages. But one cannot forgive this. Here he approaches those who are far beyond being his betters, they're from a different dimension. To listen as KG addresses 'Round Midnight is to question the existence of God. A smooth jazz draft of Ipanema is rather like painting a polar bear in a snowstorm. But the height of impertinence and grandiosity is playing a duet with Satchmo. It was a tawdry bit of grandstanding when Natalie Cole did it with her dead father, but at least that was all in the family. Here it is a hideous attempt at bridging the gap that will forever separate the real from the really, really awful.

Kenny G is an awsome musician and i say its okay if you dont like is music. We are all entitled to our own opinions. But dont disrespect the person because thats what most of you did. If you find his music to be distasteful, then listen to those you know you like. point blank. and for those of you who said he should be ashamed because he dubbed his music over louis armstrong, he has nithing to be ashamed about.

4 out of 5 stars soothing background music.......2005-08-07

This album seems to be irritating people for some reason. I disagree; it's good for trying to fall asleep or sitting in the tub. It's soothing that's the point. For dinner music I would pick something else though.

1 out of 5 stars Hrmmm..........2005-06-18

Since my music and art teacher, who is actually a (very good) bassist, can hold a note on a trumpet in the same way Kenny G can hold it on the saxophone (circular-breathing), my music teacher is the best jazz musician ever and is better than the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, and just about any other jazz musician there is. (Except for Kenny G because he can hold a note really long too)

End of discussion.

Kenny G does it again. It is amazing how many of my favorite songs are made by him. Whether I am looking for a song to keep me upbeat or one that could set the mood, he is always there. The highlights of this cd for me are "Paradise", "Malibu Dreams", "Seaside Jam", and of course, "Midnight Magic". He has truly grown as an artist. His earlier cds were basically duets. After his release, "Gravity", he moved toward more instrumental moods than being accompanied by backup vocals. He is truly one of my favorite artists, and if you like relaxing music, this is a great buy.

1 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost!.......2005-06-03

Thank goodness this mans music is now largely passe and this opus shows us why.... it's just dreadful wimpering stuff. I was told by a relative this man was the greatest musician in the world because he can hold a note longer than anyone else. Well, if that's true, I am not sure that makes him necessarily "musical." All I can tell you is that his "bleating" and "whining" kazoo-like tenor sax is sure to annoy anyone with a real ear for music. Again on this album, his "improvisations" are nearly all identical in texture and pattern and are perfectly suited to the grocery stores, dental offices and shopping malls his tunes are mostly heard, since you can only take this music in little doses. I will say that he does wisely choose first class arrangers and back up musicians to accompany him, but that screechy sax the delicate-looking Kenny plays is nothing more than ego, vanity and hype. How this strange little character with an abrasive instrument became popular is beyond all logic musically or visually.

5 out of 5 stars Positively Inspired and Brilliantly Conceived!.......2004-05-21

I had almost given up on Kenny G! I could never get into his CDs except for "Kenny G Live". And I wondered why he could sound so soulful in concert on the live album but so DOA in the studio. I would rank his past studio albums right along side of elevator music.

This is the first studio recording from Kenny G that I can say he was elevated, relaxed, and fluid. The compositions are creative while the music flows from deep within his soul.

The samples on the website only allow enough time to hear Kenny G begin in a structured parameter but do not give the listener the opportunity to hear him independently break away into rhythmic expression. His improvisation is impressive.

I agree with many others who feel that the Brian McKnight song sounds uninspired. It just doesn't have the charisma of the others. It easily could be deleted, leaving an album with perfect continuity.

No wonder Kenny G was nominated for a Grammy for this work. It is his best recording yet. Hopefully there will be many others in his future that are equally as brilliant.

I will freely admit to having a love/hate relationship with saxophonist Kenny G. While frequently I find his music far too innocuous and musically uninteresting I will also readily admit to finding him a not so small guilty pleasure. And with the release of " Paradise " my exasperating relationship continues. Inquiring minds may want to know...

My introduction to this disc was at a listening station in a nearby booksellers. And while the initial strands of the song " Brazil " didn't exactly knock me out I did find it pleasant enough...in an innocuous fashion that is. Nevertheless, hope springing eternal and all that I found myself purchasing my very own copy and after digesting it for several months now have found it more and more in my CD player. " Brazil " has grown on me quite a bit as of late and " Malibu Dreams " is gorgeous ( though I find the title sounding far too much like the name of a daytime soap-opera or something akin to that. ) The real surprise was of course " One More Time " with lyrics sung by Chante Moore.
A beautiful number that grows more enchanting with every listen. Of course there are other surprises as well but I'll let you discover them for yourselves. Ok, one more of mine would be " Falling In The Moonlight " another very languid and inviting selection that makes me stop whatever I may be doing and give my full attention to. The disc as a whole does possess a certain warm and intimate atmosphere that is truly engaging.

Overall, while Jazz purists the world over may ultimately condemn Kenny ( and no, I don't know if I would call this jazz either! ) I will admit to enjoying his music very much and finding myself happy for accepting it for what it is. And at least as far as this CD is concerned Kenny has indeed helped me find a small slice of " Paradise. " Here's hoping you find yours as well. All the best...

I just happen to be in the music store a few weeks ago, and was looking for DVD's and decided to visit the Jazz section...While browsing, I saw this CD and immediately purchased it without even listening to samples. Something just told me this was going to be good CD, and its not just good, is wonderful.

90% of the CD is great, with the exception of the track with Brian McKnight (I love BM, but this could have been left out)..

Paradise and Ocean Breeze are my two favorites. I play these two tracks everyday while at work. I especially love "Paradise" its soooooo sexy!!! I always want to dance with my husband when I hear it...

I have always been a fan of Kenny G (His entire CD, Breathless, was the theme for my wedding)..I look foward to more from this gifted artist.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Musician?.......2006-08-08

If a musician doesn't play music for an audience what is the purpose in ever coming out of practice. Why don't musicians continually only play for themselves in solitary hours, days, month, years of practice? Why? Because they want to be heard and appreciated for what they can do; they want to please the crowd. If a 6 year old girl can please a crowd with her fairly on note and rhythm rendition of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone," and please the crowd just as good as an old virtuoso violinist playing "Concert Fantasy on 'Carmen'" who is better at what the musician's purpose is? In fact, more pleasure may come from the 6 year old because the crowd can recognize how difficult or unusual it is for a 6 year old to sing like that than some 'old dude' doing something on a violin when they don't have a clue how hard whatever is considered difficult on a violin is. Anyway, Kenny G pleases the crowd, whether holding long notes or doing crazy runs that sound difficult (SOUND DIFFICULT, not necessarily are difficult, he plays for laymen crowd) Kenny G pleases the crowd and he is rewarded for it by having a bigger crowd because most people are laymen. Mix the hard sounding stuff with smooth, cool, pretty sounding stuff and you have a number 1 crowd pleaser. Doing this stuff on top of a great like Louis Armstrong, if you haven't heard listen to Kenny G's "Classics in the Key of G," was this out of line? How many do this sort of thing in practice; emulating your musical mentor? I guess Kenny extended his love of practice to the recording studio and know the live stage to DVD. The DVD or the Classics albums were not the smartest thing to do in the eyes of some, but novel and the crowds love them. I thought it was great marketing, a way to get the crowd ready for Kenny's new musical offerings through presentation (marketing) and not just his playing. This may have taken away a little of his musicianship, by relying on marketing, but does it take away from or disrespect Mr. Armstrong or Kenny's ability to please the crowd? No more than Jamie Foxx doing a movie about Ray Charles (named Ray) and then using Mr. Charles' music and likeness in his music recordings, music videos, and live shows. This introduced Ray to a brand new generation who would have never known him in the numbers that they know him now. Now they are singing parts of his songs and understanding the struggle he went through to please the crowd. Kenny could have done the same thing, by getting a band to recreate the sound and likeness of the greats while also sampling, but the way he did it was less money no band or movie cast/crew needed, although this didn't help other musicians and artists, but it kept him in the picture. It would be hard to sell Mr. Armstrong as a long haired white boy, plus Kenny was easier to market on his own because he was a white boy in jazz (good musicianship and business savvy). If these stuffy serious musicians and the music critics who can't play can ever understand that they need to please the crowd, play the game, they may bring jazz back instead of drive it deeper into obscurity. Please the crowd, give them something they want mixed with something they need, an education on greatness in music so future generations can appreciate true greatness. So go path the way for the future. The old jazz musicians did that and that is why we remember them as a mass market over multiple generations. If you are a great technical player, but no one connects with you because your technique is too pure to be understood by laymen then maybe you aren't a master musician, crowd pleaser. Just my two cents, very late but here none the less. Kenny G is great for what he is...a musician and this will never be posted, huh. Sorry for the length.

1 out of 5 stars Kenny G Licks ASS!!.......2006-04-23

First of all, this album right here is what really got Kenny G noticed by the mainstream. But that's mostly just because of the "controversey" it caused in the media. Only after that happened, did this thing start selling well. It took a year after its release to go platinum. And while I'm not saying this is a bad album (anything but), a lot of people shouldn't act like this is the only good thing by Kenny G. There's TONS to hear by them out there. Give them a shot.

Sorry 'bout that. The Great Milenko, well, you've heard of this by now. It's one of Kenny G's top albums, and is full of great lyrics that you can probably relate to. Listen to "Hall of Illusions" and "Pass Me By". While one's more up beat, and the other's pretty sad, those songs get your attention, and make you realize that we need to make best of this life we have. While all the tracks are good, and a lot of time was put into them, here are the stand outs (to me anyway)-

Hokus Pokus, How Many Times?, Southwest Voodoo, Hall of Illusions, What is a Juggalo?, Hellalujah, Down with the Clown, Pass Me By

If you don't like any of those, then get outta here. You're not meant to be an Kenny G fan. It makes me sick that so many people go "Kenny G sucks!" and don't have anything to back that up. The Kenny G is probably the smartest band I've heard since System of a Down.

The production on this is better than their previous albums, and the music just plain kicks ass. Whenever "Southwest Voodoo" kicks in, I can't help but bounce around the room. And let's not forget the Suicide Hotline between "Piggie Pie" and "How Many Times?". That skit alone makes me want to work at a suicide hotline place. Violent Kenny G is the man.

Get this and kick back with some Faygo and have fun. And after that, go out and buy The Riddle Box, Bizaar, The Ringmaster, and much more.

1 out of 5 stars Here is more proof that the masses are mindless. .......2006-04-13

Many happy reviewers noted that Kenny G's record for holding the longest note in the world is an indication of his extrodinary talent. The technique that he uses to accomplish this mindless playing is called circular breathing, and he is not the only person in the world that can perform this task. The difference between him, and the other wind players in the world that have this ability is simple. The other wind players realize that holding one note for an excessive amount of time is not music and is a waste of their time. Kenny's mindless noodling on this cd, and his other cd's is no more advanced than a highschool student beginning to learn how to play jazz, and it definately does not have as much heart. Aside from having more heart the highschool student has one major advantage over Kenny, he or she has the desire to improve, and will subsequently improve with practice. Kenny on the other hand has been playing the same way for his entire career with no sign of improvement. When one listens to his noodling on any one of his songs it is the same as the last. He might arpeggiate up a chord and then play a whiny, out of tune long tone as filler. His notes are always safe, and are usually identical in placement and rythm to the ones in the melody. How is this jazz? And why is he always listed in the jazz section? If I want to listen to instrumental music with a melody, I listen to classical. Those muscians undoubtedly are far superior to the simple minded Kenny. Unfortunately it seems as though the masses in America and throughout the world have forgotten what music is, and more importantly what jazz music is. For this I would like to thank MTV (and other music television stations), the Record Labels, and the overall ignorance of the masses. MTV and other music stations play videos to sell products to the ignorant masses. Record companies realizes that their artists no longer have to have talent to get the masses on board and sell products to them, so they sign the talentless. That leaves the intelligent with the popular music of today, and Kenny G. As for playing over Louis Armstrong, this act is nothing short of bastardization. Reviewers have suggested that Kenny G's version is enjoyable, and he had the right to do it. There is nothing wrong with playing standards, or even playing the melody to What a Wonderful World, but overdubbing, no matter how you look at it is a crime, even if the person in question had have been someone like Michael Brecker. Jazz lovers likely would not have had a problem with Kenny simply playing the melody, but disgracing one of the most important founders to sell records is unacceptable. This action is comparable to insulting someones dead relative, it simply should never happen. For those of you that enjoy Kenny's music I am truly sorry for you. Maybe you weren't given the opportunity to take music in school, or exposed to variety of different music by your parents. Or maybe you're very narrow-minded and enjoy playing the role of a sheep in a herd. Unfortunately it is your fault Kenny exists and the only way he will ever be stopped is when the masses realize that he isn't special, he isn't talented, and most importantly he isn't jazz. Give real jazz music a chance, it is not dead like you may think. In fact in many urban centres it continues to flourish, and the are always new faces popping up on the scene that have a lot of talent, but do not have the support to make it big. I propose that you, the lovers of Kenny, and mainstream music that you listen to Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau and Chris Potter. These phenomenal musicians will give you insight into the origins of jazz and how it has evolved over the years. I also encourage you to check out your local music scene. I can guarantee you that there are musicians playing in your area that have far more talent and potential then the Kenny G's of the world, they just need an audience. Please be that audience, you will be helping musicians that may have otherwise gone entirely un-noticed, and maybe, just maybe, by being that audience you will help someone achieve their dreams of being a professional musician. As far as this cd goes, Amazon may want to reconsider its rating system. 1/5 equates to 20%, which is in turn 20% to much for Kenny's effort.

Having seen Kenny G in concert several times, this CD definitely captured his unique sound. No one plays the bass like Vale Johnson and his solo on track 4 is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars oh no!.......2005-11-30

Kenny G is one of the greatest saxophone players that ever played. HE HAS HIS OWN STLYE and solos with extraordinary taste! I Think alot of "musicians" are mad because they cant top him! Does every body like all of his songs? No!! As a matter of fact, I my self dontlike all of his songs! Those of you who hates Kenny G because of that song he dubbed over with Louis Arnstrong YOU should be ashamed! he has nothing to be ashamed about! you all need to hop off his back and stick to what you like!

5 out of 5 stars Wright needs help.......2005-02-28

"Kenny G is often quoted as defending his crowd-pleasing sound as instrumental pop, not jazz (despite having taken his turn at the music of Ellington, Monk, and other masters on 1999's Classics in the Key of G). --Rickey Wright "

Rickey Wright, Racist! and possible a Jew hater; and differently a low life. 'Kenny G Live' is one great album. And right now I'm goung to On Demand at MusicMatch and listen to some more great music with Michael Bolton.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Kenny G!!!.......2004-10-26

"Kenny G Live" is the first and so far only live album released from the popular saxophonist. Recorded during his successful 1989 tour, "Live" displays Kenny G at his peak riding on the success of his then-previous two studio records, "Duotones" and "Silhouette". While those albums contained some fine music, the live versions displayed on this CD are an entirely different story. Kenny G and his five-piece band stretch the music out into extended improvisations and show off some great musical chops. Mr. G himself performs some excellent virtuoso sax work on "Songbird" and "Silhouette" (which features Kenny holding an A-natural on his soprano sax for nearly 30-seconds in the intro). Kenny's bandmates also show off their versatility especially in Vail Johnson's bass solo in "Midnight Motion" and Robert Damper's extended keyboard solo in "Songbird". Besides having its mellow moments, "Live" also includes some downright funky highlights including the aforementioned "Midnight Motion" as well as "I've Been Missin' You" and "Tribecca" which shows off Kenny's fine playing on the tenor sax as opposed to his usual soprano. Renowned pop singer Michael Bolton makes a guest appearance with a soulful rendition of "Don't Make Me Wait For Love" (originally sung by Lenny Williams on "Duotones") with his gutsy vocals giving the song a harder edge.
Apart from the live material, the album is bookended by two additional studio tracks. Both "Going Home" and "Uncle Al" are in the typical Kenny G ballad style with light melodies and soaring soprano sax work.
While Kenny G has been an assasination target for many critics, there is no denying that "Kenny G Live" contains some brilliant music. It's quite possible that this could be Kenny's finest album as it shows off the full scope of his dynamic sax playing full of lyrical melodicism and passion. His studio albums offer only a glimpse of what he is capable of while this live disc offers the big picture.
In the end, this is definitely a classic in the key of G.
