    5 out of 5 stars Be Aware..........2007-07-03

I ordered a copy of this cd online from another seller and ended up getting what I am guessing is an unofficial reproduction of some sort on Old Metal Records. It sounds ok (slightly better than it did on cassette back in the day), but there are noticable differences in the layout and quality of the artwork. It is definately not the original Enigma release from 1989 or the upcoming remastered version from Old School Metal Records. I was ok with this because I just dumped it into iTunes anyway. You may not be. (I listen to my iPod 99.9% of the time these days.)

Just be careful and ask the seller what version they have before buying if this is something that would affect your decision to purchase.

All of that aside, this is great thrash. One of my all time favorites and essential to any metal fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars More Thrash,Less Speed Metal Then Know Your Enemy.......2005-08-14

Laaz Rockit rules, this is more of a thrash album rather then speed metal like Know Your Enemy. This album rules, they do Holiday In Cambodia which is a cover song and it just rules by Laaz Rockit.Fire In The Hole starts the album off and the song is awesome and then to end the album is The Omen which is such a perfect ballad song,it's kind of haunting.I suggest you find Annihilation Principle somewhere else where it's cheaper,if not it's worth paying that much for it.This album is different from City's Gonna Burn and Know Your Enemy,it's heavier and the singing is different. Please reissue all of Laaz Rockit's albums.

5 out of 5 stars THE authority in non-"Big-4" thrash metal.......2005-07-24

This album has some of the best thrash metal you'll ever hear. The power's there, the speed is there, and the songs are even catchy to boot. My personal favorites include Shadow Company, a cover of the Dead Kennedys' Holiday in Cambodia, Chain of Fools, and the closer The Omen. This is a MUST for any thrash metal fan, but I'd suggest finding it on LP for about $10 rather than shelling whatever insane price is currently getting asked.

This is a fabulous compilation of squiggly, squirmy, and arty post-everything electronic music. It's weirdly accessible, decidedly futuristic stuff, though sonically and BPM-wise, it's located closer to the chill-out room than the dance floor. Like "click-hop," "blip-hop" is one of those goofy record-collector terms that no one really uses, and the closest this music gets to hip-hop is that the two terms sound alike. Compiled by David Byrne and Yale Evelev, the disc snags some of the best recent recordings by a host of big names from the more krautrock-y (Mouse on Mars, To Rococo Rot) and dubby (Pole, Pickadelic) ends of the esoteric dance spectrum. There are lots of undulating blips and bleeps here, but this is not your dad's techno. It's a weirdly organic, imaginative music, where you never quite know what's going to come next. Cartoon sound effects, bizarre human beatbox sounds, and farty synth squelches give way to gorgeous textures and subtle melodies perched atop a clatter of mechanistic, humming tones. It's a gorgeous late-night mix tape. --Mike McGonigal

2 out of 5 stars Fails to showcase a fascinating genre.......2004-03-17

David Byrne's good taste and perceptive commentary introduced me to Brazilian popular music, and for this I am grateful. But his take on 'blip hop' -- these days, most people are calling it 'click-hop' or 'glitch' -- is surprisingly weak. There isn't a single track here you can't do without. It fails to show you why you should care about this really amazing sub-genre of electronic pop music. For a much better introduction to the genre, buy anything by Andreas Tilliander, who also records under the name Mokira.

5 out of 5 stars Pay attention to anything with David Byrne's name attached.......2003-05-29

Sure, not for everyone, even those naturally inclined towards electronica. But if you dig something a little quirky, definitely unique, and well-suited to your psuedo-futuristic space lounge cocktail party, this is it.

And, I suppose it goes without saying, if you ARE a serious fan of "Blip Hop", you'd probably be best going after the full-length albums of the artists present on the disc. This really is a brief overview of the genre for the casual passerby.

5 out of 5 stars Like nothing I've heard before.......2003-01-10

I have to admit, I didn't really start liking this CD til about the forth or fifth play, but now I can't wait to listen to it again! You just have to let it all sink in, and might I suggest a decent pair of headphones so the weirdos, who don't get it, don't criticize. I picked this up having never heard of any of these bands (which is rare for me) or the name "Blip-hop." But I liked the idea, so I said, "I'll check it out." Now...I wanna hear more. God I hope there's a Vol. 2, and 3, and 4...

4 out of 5 stars Anything New Out There? Look Here.......2002-12-29

R U WONDERING about (i) the future of music, (ii) whether rave/trance has anywhere else to go, and (iii) just where the latest digital music-making technology has gone? Well, here, we have - from Luaka Bop Records (David Byrne's label) - a compilation of musics (from the recently liberated eastern bloc) which may have some answers. Trance has never sounded so... freaking trance-like. Don't be fooled by the post-hip suspiciously David-Byrne-sounding oh so detached description on the back of the CD. This compilation is NOT machine-like. It truly reflects the human emotions behind the various projects - playful, hypnotic and, at times, truly sublime (if somewhat repetitious ONLY if you are not REALLY listening). The future of music may be found here. As musical wallpaper, or as an intense listening experience, these layered, poly-rhymthic, musical adventures will amuse, mystify, and entrance your mind. Welcome to the New World!

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2002-10-30

All of the artists on this CD are talented, but the tracks seem to have been selected to minimize their differences, which results in a surprisingly bland offering. If you're interested in this whole blip-hop, glitch, IDM-thing, there are much better places to start (such as the "Clicks + Cuts" series, "Electric Ladyland Clickhop V.1.0," or even Warp's "Compilation").

The essay (by David Bryne) included in the liner notes is meant to be a tongue-in-cheek anthropological analysis of the influence of cold climates on people and their technology, but it comes across as sloppy and trite. It is doubtless intended to be a not-so-serious analysis of what Bryne thinks is a not-so-serious genre, but his writing is littered with repetitions of the same stock phrases and lacks focus, while the artists on the CD are very focused and precise (however playful their sounds).

      5 out of 5 stars Dynamic duo.......2007-06-07

Strung-out Troubadours has given us a gift of truly outstanding music. Evident here is the further continuation of Rik Emmett's evolution from "great" solo artist to "phenomenal," an evolution which began with the trilogy of "Ten Invitations," "Swing Shift," and "Raw Quartet," and advances throughout his solo career into this new effort. He only becomes more smooth and polished with each new release, and once again surrounds himself with only the best. Paired with Dave Dunlop, the amazing versatility of this talented duo is showcased right from track one. Dave steps out of his "Full Nine" skin to show us another side of his superb talent, and takes advantage of the opportunity to shine on this cd.

If you are seeking seamless versatility, great music, and amazing talent, you will find it here; if you have loved Rik's solo work, you will love this collection of well varied songs as well. From the subtle jazz of "Good Thing" to the Latin-flavored "Quintessence" and everything else in between, Rik and Dave have delivered a truly impressive effort.

      4 out of 5 stars Troubadours.......2007-06-01

This is not my favorite from Mr. Emmett. However, as always, Mr. Emmett has created and continues to create some of the finest moments in music. His music, whatever motif, within any time capsule will be remembered as a classic, one day.

Hopefully, now that this album is more widely available thanks to Cargo picking it up for distribution, this band will get the recognition they deserve.

Go National is the side-project of hardcore legend Kevin Seconds, who has led his band 7 Seconds for two decades now. Go National's music is NOT hardcore, so if it needs to be hard and fast or angry for you to enjoy it, don't waste your time here. But if you like loud, melodic and unpretentious pop music, check out what you've been missing, and tell yr friends!

Go National sounds like a slightly heavier, less intellectual Posies, maybe. Or a west coast Noise Addict. Or kinda like a weird test-tube mating of Kurt Cobain and Pat Dinizio. Or maybe Weezer with a WAY better songwriter. Sometimes they sound kinda like Cheap Trick. Sometimes they sound like the Breeders. But they rock constantly.

Go National also has a single available featuring a better recording (IMO) of this album's "Indyanna" and an amazingly brilliant song called "A Weekly Thing" that didn't make it to their full-length. Buy both!

Even better than Go National is Kevin Seconds' solo stuff... namely his album Stoudamire, a perfect pop album stylistically somewhere between Elliott Smith and Grandpaw Would-era Ben Lee. Beautiful and smart 4-track bedroom pop and one of the most criminally overlooked albums of the last five years.

FYI, Kevin also made a fine pop album with a band he called 5"10 called Reggie Reggie Emily.

Well, what are you waiting for?...

        5 out of 5 stars Go National.......2000-06-17

Often while in Sacramento I find hanging outside of a club, and listening to the word salad of the homeless, schizophrenic folks, to be more interesting than the mating rituals and music going on inside. However, this is not true when Go National is playing. If you have an aversion for spunky music then, one, seek therapy, and two, go see them anyway, just to observe the energy exchange between these lively musicians and their deeply disturbed fans. Personally this energy feeds my soul and keeps me up all night, and what's not to love about unfocused mania? My predilection borders on paraphilia. And now you too can become a fervent fan because with their new CD, Got My One Good Eye On You, they can be enjoyed in the privacy of your own home, and since there'll be no dress code, I recommend listening to them naked, preferably with a friend...
