Just for kids?? No way!!.......2005-04-08
This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music. Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").
If you're into that whole thing of classical music sharpening a youngster's intellect, then this won't disappoint. If you're just into good old fashioned classical music in general, it won't disappoint you either. Also, I highly recommend to both groups the classical CD BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN.
The best classical album for kids!.......2002-12-12
This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family!
Great for Preschool Children.......2000-10-12
I use this CD with my preschool music group. The kids love it! This CD enables children learn about classical music without over extending their attention spans.

These prewar gems from a long-neglected artist have been remastered and now sound better than ever. Scott's career as composer, bandleader, and electronic-music pioneer is just beginning to be rediscovered. Here, he mixes swing jazz with classical forms, exotica (long before there even was such a thing), and his own hyperactive melodies to create a timeless sound. Many of the bouncy tunes are recognizable from their constant use in cartoon soundtracks over the years: the classic "Powerhouse," a jittery mix of an edgy scherzo and a relentless march (as well as a favorite of Looney Toons composer Carl Stalling); the jaunty "The Toy Trumpet"; and the dizzying "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals." Scott's original recordings with his Quintette (which, strangely enough, consisted of six musicians) are a delight, and the invention and energy never let up. --Heidi MacDonald
Customer Reviews:
Introduction to a Genius.......2007-05-09
Raymond Scott's music is most remembered today as soundtrack material for cartoons. This is natural, but it risks underestimating his genius.
He was an improviser of a special sort. He rarely wrote down his ideas, but instead "spoke" them to his close-knit group of performers (The Raymond Scott Five) and listened to how they executed it. He then made constant on-stream modifications and improvements.
No one has ever dusplicated this vast creativity. If you like this collection, make sure you check our the Beau Hunks re-creation. The performances are pretty good, but also the sound quality helps you realize what it must have been like to be there and hear this frothy, dense, and complex stuff.
Wonderful...
32 or 64.......2007-01-23
No, the name of this review isn't a misquote of a Chicago song title. It's simply a sneakily veiled way of saying that any man who writes music using 32nd and 64th notes can't be all bad. Raymond Scott was clearly in a class by himself. He was the very best at what he did: composing complex, varied music that sounds modern even 70 years later--and that's hard to do, folks!
A new version of track one, "Powerhouse" (Scott's most famous work), is currently being used in a TV commercial for a debit card-- perhaps you've seen the machine-like lunchroom that hums until a man DARES to pay for his meal with, of all things, CASH. Yep, that music is the very same "Powerhouse." (Scott's original was recorded in early 1937.) Besides that signature piece and the equally famous "Toy Trumpet," be sure to give a listen to "The Penguin." You may have heard it before. But ALL these songs are wonderful, and there's lots to like on RECKLESS NIGHTS AND TURKISH TWILIGHTS.
Often, Raymond Scott's compositions sound like an early form of be-bop. Not always easily approachable, it's still definitely worth the effort to get to know the man's music. Analog to digital transfers are of the highest quality, while content and performance are unparalleled. Album includes a nicely detailed 20 page booklet. Very highest recommendation.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 61:32
Raymond Scott "Reckless Nights& Turkish Twighlights".......2007-01-10
Anyone who grew up with cartoon music swimming in their heads must own this album. Although "Powerhouse" is the most recognizable Car-tune, Shirley Temple fans will revel in the original cut of "The Toy Trumpet" and you will thoroughly enjoy other classic Raymond Scott chestnuts used in early films and TV commercials. This album will surely put a smile on each listeners face and evoke the phrase "oh, I remeber that one!" If you want to have some real listening fun, make "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" the nect addition to your CD collection!!
The reviews here are just as bad as the music on the cd!.......2005-12-30
I just received the CD (12/05). Before I bought the CD I read almost all of the reviews and they whetted my appetite to get this CD. BIG mistake! I heard it last night and it is aggravating to sit through. I love music based on the Scott premise but not Scott's! With the exception of two numbers, I never heard any of it before. I never saw a cartoon that featured Scott's compositions (and neither did he!).
I love MUSIC FROM A SURPLUS STORE. I love LEROY ANDERSON music. I love synthesized music whether classical (Walter/Wendy Carlos, Ray Lynch, Hearts Of Space, etc.) and I started listening to this kind of music in the early '60s with SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON, etc. I had a ton of strange music LPs, not only electronic, as I love mainly instrumental music. Delirium In HiFI (Elsa Popping) was one of my favorites so I'm qualified to pass judgement on Scott's "music."
Raymond Scott is his own category and you gotta hate music to like his compositions. The musicians (members of various Quintets) are top notch but they selected the wrong leader to showcase their talents.
I found myself moving from one track to another seconds into each track and sometimes I wondered why there were track separations!
Finally, this is not a fun CD to listen to and I'm definitely not going to play it again. I will not recommend it and the best thing you can do if you are still interested in auditioning it is to find someone that has a copy and give it a test drive. You buy it, though, and afterwards you'll wonder why you bothered.
Scott is a genius plain and simple.......2005-10-26
Sure, many people haven't heard the name Raymond Scott. However, plenty of people know his music. It has been used in both Looney Toons and Ren and Stimpy, not to mention countless other cartoons, and has been sampled to death (by artists such as Soul Coughing). However, his music can stand on its own merits and is much more than just incidental music for cartoons. In fact, Scott never composed a peice specifically for a cartoon. His music is incredibly surrealistic and zany, perfect for a cartoon. Despite the fact that this is music of its time, it sounds incredibly fresh. There wasn't much like this around in its day, and there is even less like it around today, which makes it an unique listen. This is the most logical starting point in your appreciation of Scott's legacy. If you like this music, check out the incredible double-disc set "Manhattan Research Inc", which also contains a booklet. A legend entirely deserving of his cult reputation.

Amazon.com essential recording
When Duke Ellington began to slip classical motifs and structures into his jazz compositions in the '30s, two fellow composers took his example as a challenge to do the same. Raymond Scott played movie music, led the house band on the popular radio show, "Your Hit Parade," and supplied much of the music for Carl Stalling's famous cartoon scores; John Kirby led a jazz combo that included Ben Webster, Russell Procope and Charlie Shavers. All three bandleaders are saluted on Bug Music. The music inside is playful and joyful, with Byron's clarinet skipping and jumping through the catchy melodies and quirky rhythms. In fact, what's most striking about the recording is not the mix of jazz and classical music, but the mix of jazz and humor, an all too rare combination these days. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2005-08-20
This music is energetic, joyous, creative and inspiring. And addictive, as some of the tunes live on in one's head long after listening! I've been waiting for music like this all my life.
Motivating Jazz will take you back..........2005-08-10
I enjoyed this album much more than I thought that I would. Listening to it evokes many excited emotions, and it's great to dance to.
Sublime Work.......2005-01-12
I noticed that most of my Amazon reviews were negative. I tend to rant when something fails, but I rarely go online to express the joy that some products bring -- I'm clearly a grump. So I decided to write about something that elates me day in and out.
This music is beautifully played, well recorded, and my whole family enjoys it. My wife and I chose 'Charlie's Prelude' as our wedding song, our two-year-old daughter will dance anytime we put on this CD, and I've even had the great fortune to see Don Byron's group play these almost-impossible-to-execute tracks live.
Bug Music is just a terrific work. Buy it and enjoy it!
For grown-ups AND kids!.......2003-12-05
This is a favorite when looking for an energy pop ... sort of caffeine on CD. And during a week-long painting project with a 13-year old, all hip hop and rap, this was the single CD he asked for again and again!
NOT just nostalgia.......2003-01-08
A previous reviewer mocked this album as no different than what Wynton Marsalis does. I respectfully disagree. While Don Byron is reviving music too little known (Kirby, Scott), and honoring the well-known (Ellington), and not taking any liberties with the content... he's NOT suggesting that jazz should be frozen in time, or that anything freer than bop is just noise, the way, say, Marsalis does.
Sure, i dig this recording. But i also dig his radical, modern works like the Tuskegee Experiment, his Knitting Factory work, and his sideman work with the likes of Marc Ribot. You will NOT hear Wyton Marsalis playing with Marc Ribot or Bill Frisell!
Respect for the past, and an eye to the future - that's what jazz ought to be, i think. Contrary to opinion, i think the cool thing about this album isn't that people will listen to it and then go listen to Raymond Scott or Duke Ellington. No, the cool thing is that they'll listen to this and then open their ears up to something genuinely new and radical with Byron's gorgeous modern works.

A reckless night aboard musician-ship!.......2004-02-09
"Once again, Basta Records presents the Raymond Scott Quintette...in another collection of their ultra-modern musical specialties, many presented for the first time anywhere!"
Thank you, Mr. Announcer...and now just a word to say why no Raymond Scott fan anywhere should be without this, the definitive, the supreme, nay, dare I say the canonical representation on record of this sublime supergroup. That's right, folks...no re-creations or reinterpretations here, just Ray's own reference recordings of the original Quintette, made at his own expense in the late 1930s and presented here in extra-crisp period fidelity.
A good number of these tracks first appeared on "The Raymond Scott Project" (Stash Records, 1991), but that's been hard to get for years now, and what's more, there's still other great stuff that hasn't previously seen the light of day. If your tail twitches at titles like "Turkish Mish Mush," "Square Dance for Eight Egyptian Mummies," or "Yesterday's Ice Cubes (are water today)"...well, this CD two-fer is the set for you.
If, on the other hand, you're still wondering what the big hairy deal is with five prehistoric radio studio musicians and one lovable tyrant of a pianist-composer-kook...I say, listen and be amazed! These cats could play music as challenging as stapling Jell-O to a greased pig and still stay tighter than Pee Wee Herman's bow tie. Johnny Williams's infectious proto-swing drumming was key to the Quintette's super-charged machine-age ricky-ticky. Pete Pumiglio made the impossible sound easy on the clumsy old Albert System clarinet. And the stuff Dave Harris could kick out on an ordinary tenor saxophone will have your head spinning on your shoulders.
Then, of course, there's ample opportunity to hear the madness of Raymond Scott himself as he literally composes "on" his musicians (including some work-in-progress recordings of tunes that never quite gelled). Much more than zing-boom animaniac music is afoot here. Ray's "out" harmonic sense was almost unequaled in those pre-bop days, as is evident on numbers like "Suicide Cliff," "Bumpy Weather Over Newark," and a radical recasting of the old war horse "Bugle Call Rag" (about the only standard this group ever played!).
To Basta, I say, "È NON BASTA!" Take us back to Aquackanack, where the sky is green and Raymond Scott and his quazy quintette forever mystify, enthrall, and groove hard.
FANTASTIC STUFF!.......2003-08-22
Here are two discs of this eccentric genius' music that sometimes will be more familiar than you'd expect! A bunch of his compositions were used in Warner Bros. cartoons!(ren & Stimpy,etc...also!) So,you see we were all pleasantly introduced to Raymond Scott at an early age!
His compositions are as lively as the cartoons we all remember so well, although not all of his music was used for that purpose. His music conjures up strange and wonderful mental pictures with the use of all sorts of zippy instrumental patter between the players.(His drummer was totally amazing!)
Not only that ,but there are pieces here that no one had heard in years because they were recorded and put "in the can" so to speak! So,now all of us luck listeners are gifted with this beauty of a set! A joy to behold and hear!
Please also look into his electronic recordings too!(Through the "Manhatten Research..."CD.) Raymond was an "unknown influence" on a young man named MOOG too! It's just that Mr.Scott liked to keep his innovations slightly out of public eye-shot.
Meet this amazing man and his music and you'll slaver for more and more! INCREDIBLE!
One of the best RS albums out there!.......2003-06-08
This CD is truely a fantastic addition to any Raymond Scott or cartoon fan's collection. This was the first Raymond Scott CD that I purchased, after learning that his melodies were used in many Carl Stalling scores that were in Looney Tunes and Merrie Mellodies cartoons. The songs are very catchy, and I'm sure anyone who's seen a Looney Tune cartoon in their life can recognize the jazzy tune "Powerhouse". A great collection.
Gems, gems & gems.......2003-05-15
This definitive RSQ collection does two jobs: exposing the quality of Scott and his Quintette, AND putting a spot on the quality of The Beau Hunks reconstructions (on their CD's "A Celebration on the Planet Mars" and "Manhattan Minuet", also BASTA releases). Beautifully laid out too, this must-have...
Quintessential Scott collection.......2003-03-02
Raymond Scott's late 1930s whiplash-jazz was more than just over-the-cliff soundtrack fodder for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. As Scott's adherents often point out, Scott (many of whose compositions were adapted by Carl Stalling in classic WB 'toonery) never wrote a note for a cartoon in his life. His stuff just screams ANIMATION. With titles like "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals" and "Square Dance for Eight Egyptian Mummies," who could resist thinking Scott (1908-1994) had cartoons on his mind when he wrote these? But he didn't -- he was advancing the frontiers of pop music in his own visionary way.
This 2-CD, 42-track set is the definitive collection of Raymond Scott Quintette recordings. It is more comprehensive than 1992's Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights (on Columbia Legacy). Any Microphone Music tunes that also appeared on Reckless Nights are different versions, sometimes drastically so. Microphone Music contains unreleased titles, radio performances, first-rate rehearsals, and forgotten gems by Scott's idiosyncratic Quintette. The audio quality is exceptional, and the 32-page accompanying booklet features excellent liner notes by Scott authority Irwin Chusid (who produced the package), as well as photos, interviews, and reproductions of vintage magazine articles about the Quintette.
Besides the usual controlled chaos and ingenious rhythmic twists, these recordings feature tasteful solos by Scott's virtuoso sidemen; the savvy (and largely under-appreciated) percussive snap of the great drummer Johnny Williams; and even some less-animated works (e.g., "Girl With the Light Blue Hair," "Suicide Cliff") that display a more restrained (but never bland) side of the RSQ. The album title refers to Scott's penchant for considering the microphone a "seventh member" of his six-man "quintet." His pioneering studio and technical explorations reached greater fruition later in his career when Scott invented and recorded with electronic instruments. Learn more at RaymondScott.com.

Another Excellent Scott Release!!.......2006-04-14
I can't get enough music by Raymond Scott (is there any music more delightful?). When I saw this new release of original recordings of Scott's big band I snatched it up at an 'unbelievably low price'. I must say, it compares very favorably with the recent Metropole Orchestra/Beau Hunks arrangements.
Here is a short description and track list I found online:
Pianist, composer and arranger Raymond Scott was one of America's most original and inventive musicians who led a highly popular dance orchestra through the 1940s. Scott's tuneful, jolly music may best be remembered for numerous scores used for cartoon classics from "Looney Tunes" to "Merrie Melodies". Compilation annotation and discography by Big Band specialist Brian Belton. This 24 track CD features the songs:
1. Pretty Little Petticoat
2. At An Arabian House Party
3. Bird Seed Special
4. A Million Dreams Ago
5. The Peanut Vendor
6. The Toy Trumpet
7. Christmas Night In Harlem
8. Tiajuana
9. Caterpiller Creep
10.Four Beat Shuffle
11.Eagle Beak
12.When Cootie Left The Duke
13.On The Jersey Side
14.An American In Russia
15.Mocassin Glide
16.Pop Goes The Weasel
17.The Lark Leaped In
18.T'Ain't Me
19.Shoo Shoo Baby
20.People Will Say We're In Love
21.In An 18th Century Drawing Room
22.Toonerville Trolley
23.Two Way Stretch
24.A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening

The goofy chamber jazz of bandleader Raymond Scott lent itself perfectly to cartoon soundtracks ("Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals," anyone?), but, at heart, Scott was a serious composer. His electronic-music forays have been previously documented (the three volumes of Soothing Sounds for Baby), but nothing captures his diverse sound creations as well as Manhattan Research Inc. This previously unreleased two-CD collection features Scott's handmade electronics, top-secret creations he'd use to create ambient-sounding commercial jingles, as well as the odd soundtrack with budding filmmaker/Muppeter Jim Henson. Scott was impossibly ahead of his time: a snippet for "Baltimore Gas & Electric Co." could have been written by Terry Riley; "Limbo: The Organized Mind" is a hint at musique concrete; and 1960's "In the Hall of the Mountain Queen" could easily fit on an Aphex Twin disc. Gorgeous packaging, previously unreleased photos, and liner notes by Irwin Chusid, Robert Moog, and others make this a must for fans of electronic music. --Jason Verlinde

Great!.......2006-10-30
Loads of info in the booklet (with photos and ads, etc),and more importantly....LOADS OF FUN LISTENING!
This is furturistic music that influenced people from Moog ,to Henson,to Stevie Wonder(and Mowtown)!
A treat to hear, read ,and see! Just GREAT!
An Essential Volume of the History of the Future of Music.......2005-01-30
This is absolutely necessary for anyone who regards himself or herself as an authority on matters of electronic and avant-garde music. To call this music experimental discredits the genius of Scott. Experimental is "try this and see what happens". This music is purely extracted from Raymond Scott's mind. A vast majority of musicians (particularly in the field of electronica) are limited in their creativity by the technology of time. To remedy this, Scott invented his own incredibly advanced proto-synth instruments. This man was the mentor to Bob Moog himself.
But enough drooling hero-worship.
This album is not for everyone. I played it for a class of my peers (largely republicans) and they declared it "the worst music in the world". For the sake of historical compilation, it is the second longest album i own (defeated by Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness). And because this is not actually an album, it has no flow or direction. So, there's no real reason to listen from beginning to end (although it can be a mind-blowing experience). Also, the quality of several recordings can be very aggravating. During MT/ST the sound of feedback makes me think my cell phone is ringing. There isn't a ringing sound, I mean it makes the same sound as when my phone rings near my CD player. Feedback. And in several other tracks there is a background sound that can best be likened to the buzzing of a printer that begins to print and finds itself out of paper. These minor grievances hardly detract from the sonic genius of the music. But i digress...
This compilation is music in its purest form: art. Most of it was never heard by the public, it was made for Scott's whims and fancies. Unrestrained by musical trends, corporate evil, or the limits of technology, this album is anything but Pop.
The Future Yesterday.......2003-10-17
This is more than 2 cds worth of the most charming, fun, electronically generated music you are ever likely to hear and a lot more. It is also a lavish 142 page history of Scott and his amazing adventures in music and sound, illustrated with beautiful, sometimes unbelievable photos. It is a historical document of Scott's part in the evolution in electronic music and it is a beautiful object.
The music is playful, inventive and often beautiful, as is Portifino or Scott's short take on Cole Porter's Night and Day. Scott's ad jingles for Sprite, Baltimore Gas & Electric Company and Bufferin (with a young pre-Muppets Jim Henson) are both inspired and crazy.
There is the makings of a great film here but now be satisfied with and wonder at the amazing sounds contained within.
Raymond Scott History Lesson and Look to the Future.......2003-08-13
Could this man be from the future? He certainly pushed the envelope with ALL his music. From the musical madness generated by his small groups to the unusual music to sooth babies in the 1950s to this illimitable collection of futuristic music/advertisements, Raymond continues to prove that he was a sheer genius with a vision singularly lacking from 99% of the other composers of his day. Personally I cannot tell if this package is a history book with an accopmanying CD or the other way around. In either case it is a release worth owning simply for the fact that it is a precurser for what was to come musically in our society. I was stunned when I first listened to it...the recordings simply could not have been from the era that they were. Raymond Scott owned the musical crystal ball hands down.
How to knock a listener over..........2003-06-05
If the listener doesn't like electronics and machinery, he or she will be knocked over by the sheer volume of information and fotos in this package, and be able to come to rest listening to the contents of the CD's. If he or she DOES like this part of it, sitting down BEFORE starting to read the "booklet" is recommandable too. One would say that, probably due to the "paranoia" of Scott, being afraid of having his ideas and inventions stolen and therefore never having published anything, he has always been out of sight when the history of elctronic music was discussed: now we'll all be glad to give him his place amongst Moog, Buchla and others. Oh, and the sheer sound quality of those tapes, some of which are over 40 years old... Yeehaaaaaaa!

Alongside apple-cheeked watercolor paintings of infants, the original cover design for the Soothing Sounds series of records bore the charming inscription, "An Infant's Friend in Sound." Composer Harry Warnow was already legendary (as "Raymond Scott") for his whimsical electronic and big-band novelty musics. With this 1962-63 series, Scott turned his astonishing array of invented and modified keyboards and recording techniques toward pure electronic music with an infant-friendly spin. Intended as "aural toys" for the nursery, Soothing Sounds' deceptively simple "tic-tocs" and unthreatening seesaw melodies play on the calming properties of repetition--much like music boxes, Fisher-Price's mobiles, and the comforting "Again!" video mentality of the Teletubbies. Despite endorsement from the Gesell Institute of Child Development, the records sold poorly. But they had a curious afterlife, prefiguring such "adult" descendents as ambient music ("invented" by Brian Eno in 1975) and the mechanical pop-tronic textures of Kraftwerk and Gary Numan. --Gil Gershman

These have got to be the best RINGTONES on the planet. With the right conversion tools and a little bit of editing, you'll have people thinking your telephone is receiving calls from the future!
my baby loves it (no joking!).......2001-11-05
I bought this album for my six week old baby girl, hoping to find a Kraftwerk for infants. And while i have't been disappointed in the least i am actually quite surprised that she likes it as much as she does. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that my girlfriend listened to Computerwelt incessently back when that little tyke was still swimming around in the womb. Still though, some of these songs seem anything but soothing to me. One song in particular sounds like it has a alarm clock blaring continuously throughout its ten minute running time. But what did my baby do but sleep soundly through it. You may object and say that a baby that age, when asleep, would slumber through anything. But i have put this on in the middle of screaming fits and it calms her right down. We love it! Raymond Scott makes me proud to be a parent! I just can't wait now until she is old enough to appreciate Bruce Haack.
Great for baby, hard on mom and pop.......2001-08-09
I gave this CD to some new parents. They reported that on a long car trip, whenever their two-month-old son got fractious, this CD quieted him down every time. But they are starting to hate it. It has a jangly, grating undertone and a monotonous melody that gets old fast. So 5 stars for meeting its promise, 3 stars for musical merit -- 4 on average.
Birth of Electronik.......2001-07-16
I had the random chance of hearing the first two tracks of this ingenuous set one late night while listening to my school's radio station. Kind of intrigued by the history of the creator (who also created the first Moog-type keyboard for his daughter who wanted to be able to play piano without lessons), I HAD to hear the tracks that would be played from this album. Well, this album isn't just for babies....the tracks repeat simple melodies arranged in a loop of sorts with little change throught the track. Now, this may seem monotonous, but it isn't much different than what a lot of Baroque music does....this isn't Baroque, by any means, but the effect is the same.....peace achieved through soothing simplicity....and you can't get enough. This album is on my "Must Buy" list...not only for my love of electronic music, but also as it is a cornerstone to today's musical stylings of the world's best producers of electronic music.
The worldýs first 'ambient' synthesizer record.......2000-08-13
Here's something to annoy your infant with. If you let your infant listen to this he's likely to think he's on another planet. Not that he knows what this planet is all about . Your job is to confuse him even more; make it hard for him to learn how to cope with the snot-nose Disney brats he's likely to meet in nursery school. This will make him a rebel of sorts in the future and unfit for the traditional type of what is called a `job.' This will be the basis of all his future happiness. Think of it as a sort of vaccination against all the bad music he's likely to hear in the future. All us grown infants who could use a bit of infant wonder back in our heads also very much dig this music. It's great stuff. In fact, I prefer this to the two ENO discs I have which tend to make things a little too lethargic. This puts you in a relaxed but demented zone, not too far from the Twilight Zone. It sounds like a PONG gone surreally melodic. This is what you put on in the background when you're ready to read `War and Peace.'

Joplin's Treemonisha.......2006-10-12
Scott Joplin (1867/68 -- 1917) was one of the earliest composers with the ambition of combining African-American and classical musical forms. He is best-known for his ragtime compositions for the piano, but he also worked in more ambitious genres. By 1910, Joplin had composed his second opera, "Treemonisha". (The score of an earlier opera, "Guest of Honor" has been lost.) He spent much of the rest of life in an unsuccessful attempt to have Treemonisha staged and performed. The opera lay dormant until the mid-1970s when with the revival of interest in ragtime, Treemonisha was staged and performed by the Houston Lyric Opera Company and received a posthumous Pulitzer Prize in 1976. Treemonisha was made into a movie and presented on television but, unfortunately, it has again largely faded from public sight. The work receives performances from time to time by music festivals and schools and by small opera companies.
Joplin wrote the libretto as well as the music for Treemonisha. The story is set around 1884 in a rural African American community near Texarkana, Arkansas. (Just before my rehearing of Treemonisha, I passed through Texarkana on the train en route to Dallas.) The story shows Joplin's vision of how rural African Americans could advance after the Civil War by combatting superstition and by hard work, good leadership, and, most of all, a commitment to education. Importantly, Joplin's story teaches the virtue of forgiveness and of not holding grudges.
The heroine of the opera is an 18 year old woman, Treemonisha, who had been found as an infant under a tree and raised as a daughter by Monisha and her husband Ned. Monisha and Ned sent Treemonisha to a white woman for education, as the community had no schools, and Treemonisha returns as the only member of the community who can read and write. As the opera opens, Treemonisha foils the efforts of a conjurer, Zodzetrick, to sell a "bag of luck" to Monisha. In response, the connjurers kidnap Treemonisha and are about to throw her into a wasp nest when she is rescued by a townsman, Remus, disguised as a scarecrow. The conjurers in turn are captured by field workers and taken to the town where at Treemonisha's urging, they are forgiven and released. Treemonisha is acknowledged as the leader of the community and she and Monisha lead the people in a ragtime dance "Marching Onward".
This 2-CD set of "Treemonisha" on Deutsche Gramophon was first released in 1976 with the initial enthusiasm over the opera and reissued in 2005 at a budget price. Gunther Schuller, who orchestrated Joplin's piano score, conducts with Carmen Balthorp singing the role of Treemonisha and Betty Allen singing Monisha.
With its music and storyline, the opera is a mixed success. The most successful numbers are those in which Joplin stays closest to a folk idiom, particularly the finale, "A Real Slow Drag" ("Marching Onward"), the conclusion to Act II, "Aunt Dinah has Blowed de Horn", the Ring Dance "We're Going Around" from Act I, and the number for a well-meaning but shallow itinerant preacher, Parson Alltalk, "Good Advice" from Act I. I thought the Prelude to Act III also worked well as a musical number, while the overture to the entire opera was less successful. Many of the remaining numbers, for Monisha and for male soloists Remus and Ned, seem to be based more closely on European opera. Joplin composed some lovely music in these sections, but they lack the spontaniety and verve of the dances and the more folkish sections of the score.
Treemonisha remains a landmark in American Opera, and Joplin's intended crowning achievement of his career. The opera's vision of uplift and forgiveness remains inspiring, even with the crudeness of the plot. Joplin's life goal of raising African American music to the stature of American classic was realized in part by his opera. An understanding of Treemonisha is essential to understanding Joplin's artistic aims and his achievement. It is fortunate that this recording of Treemonisha is again available to introduce the listener to Joplin's opera.

RHYTHMIC FEAST.......2006-08-05
I listened to the ragtime opera "Treemonisha" with zest, not having heard it for about 30 years, when I first listened to a broadcast on BBC Radio. The whole performance is very well recorded and the finale, in particular, sums up the strength and poignancy of the story line: the vulnerablility but ultimate determination of Treemonisha, as she leads the crowd in a ragtime dance, and puts in place the men whose superstition and aggresson have tried to outwit her and her companions.
My one criticism is the singing of Monisha, Treemonisha's mother. The soprano has far too much vibrato in her voice - I speak as someone who has had voice training. All the other voices seem very balanced in this respect and I feel that the CD is well worth buying.
An unusual and virtuous classic.......2006-07-09
A quite unusual piece, indeed. Scott Joplin's score is wonderful, despite the fact that the story line couldn't be sillier. It talks about superstition, evil spirits, witchcrafting and staff like that. Besides, it's a soap opera (as all serious operas are, indeed)in the most melodramatic sense of the word. However, musically speaking, it sounds wonderful, being the brief but intense "Aunt Dinah Has Blowed de Horn" and the final "A real Slow Drag" my favourite tracks. The music sounds pure Joplin in several instances, although it is the operatic touch rather than the ragtime strain what predominates. The recording is first class and the voices, terrific. I highly recommend this classic to rare-piece collectors and ragtime fans.
Just Plain Fun.......2006-05-29
First of all, the opera itself:
I am one of those people who know nothing about music, have noone to show off for, and see or listen to opera - mainly operetta, really - only to be entertained. For me, this is a great work. Unlike one of the reviewers of another edition, I didn't find the libretto silly. I suppose one of the differences is that he is probably an urban American, while I live in the wilds of nowhere. For me, the battle between ignorance and superstition and their exploitation, on the one hand, and progress and simple decency, on the other, is still part of daily life. I fight Treemonisha's battle with her.
Another reviewer also found the stagecraft flat. Well, our family put on our own production of Treemonisha - Yes, we still do home-made amateur theatricals - and we had a ball. We especially enjoyed the kidnapping of Treemonisha and the final dance.
Now for this production:
Once again, it depends on what you're looking for. For me, this one is just fine. My only complaint is about Ben Harney's overly emotive Zodzetrick: it appears that Mr. Harney is convinced that he is the reincarnation of Sir Henry Irving; he would obviously be happier singing Wagner, and we would also be happier if he did so.
Although this is far from pure ragtime, it is pure Joplin; if you like Joplin, you will like this opera and this recording.

Perfect Christmas Music.......2005-12-27
I've owned this for years and never tire of it. Guests ALWAYS ask what I'm playing. I've purchased several copies as gifts. If you're sick of the stuff they play in malls and pine for some big, inspiring, classical arrangements, this is the CD for you.
Best Christmas CD!!.......2004-11-16
I love the traditional carols on this CD. The Carol of the Bells is my favorite!! I also love Silent Night which is one of my all time favorite Christmas carols. This album is great to put on a at a Christmas party and hit repeat. It has a nice mix of songs that you don't get tired of hearing! This is a must have and I would highly recommend this CD for anyone that enjoys Christmas songs and the holiday season. You will catch yourself humming the songs through out your day! It will definitely get rid of any "BAH HUM BUG" moods!
Excellent Symphonic Christmas Album.......2001-12-22
I was looking for arrangements of many traditional Christmas carols done by orchestras. This album hits the spot. It is not uniquely orchestra carols, the Canadian Brass is mixed in as welll. The highlight of the album for me is the back to back track of "Sleigh Ride" pieces. It begins with W.A. Mozart's "Sleigh Ride," followed by Leopold Mozart's piece of the same name, and then finnished with the ever popular arangement of "Sleigh Ride" by Anderson. It is a really good mix of carols, and can be listened to for hours.

Customer Reviews:
I love this CD!.......2001-09-13
I have been searching for a CD to accompany my balloon mime show for a long time, and when I found this, it was a dream come true. The songs are happy sounding, chirpy and fun, especially the souped up version of the PowerHouse. Comes with a burp in front that I could react to! If you like happy sounding instrumental music, this would be it!
Disappointment and irritation.......2000-08-01
This CD contains 16 tracks, some from Walt Disney "Fantasia" and one (track #11) presented as the recording of "The Flight of the Bumble Bee" from the full length cartoon-movie "Melody Time". Beware: it has got nothing to do with that enthusing performance, in boogie-woogie rhythm, by an excellent piano soloist (Freddie Martin? Teddy Wilson?) accompanied by a string-and-winds orchestra. It is, rather, a very banal rendition of Rimsky-Korsakoff's piece. Considering that I ordered this CD just for this piece (I have all others of classical music, from "Fantasia" in excellent recordings, I was disappointed and irritated when I tried to listen to the jazzed-up rendition of RK's music. This is a misrepresentation on part of the label (Sony). I don't think it's casual that the title of this piece, presented on the detail page as track #11 in the "List to Samples" section, disappears altogether from the following section ("On This CD"). If you are keen on Bugs Bunny and other rabbits, go ahead and buy this record. I'll be grateful to anybody (to the tune of $10) who can tell me where I can find a recording of the piece, such as I heard it on "Melody Time".
