5 out of 5 stars If you love funk and fusion, this is a must.......2007-07-08

I have been so fortunate to have been turned onto Jazz while in high school during the 70's. It was the time when so called fusion and jazz rock took the world by storm. It was also during a time when you can get into bars without being id'd and when the drinking age in NYC was 18. The jazz club scene was hot and the cover to get into the jazz clubs in the village were almost all free. I was so lucky to be turned onto the Breckers back then because they owned a club called "Seventh Avenue South" where they booked jazz and jazz fusion bands. Obviously the Breckers themselves played their frequently. This was a club where about 8 bandmembers where tightly squeezed together on a stage that was level with the floor! I saw the Breckers with Will Lee, Steve Gadd, Hiram Bullock or Steve Kahn, Paul Shafer on keyboards. They cooked. Their solos were out of this world! I was so saddened to hear about Michael. What a loss of a great legend. I recommend all of their recordings. The interplay between both brothers was incomparable and cant be duplicated.

5 out of 5 stars The Brecker Bros.......2007-03-08

    3 out of 5 stars Brotherly Love.......2006-08-16

Randy and Michael Brecker are jazz royalty, two of the most respected and most honored instrumentalists of the last three decades. Philly born and bred, their father was an attorney who also played piano. As Randy reminisced to me three years ago, "He had a piano he played as soon as he got home from work, and he had jam sessions. A lot of great musicians came over on weekends and played."

Randy himself became a teenaged local legend, playing in all kinds of settings, backing up American Bandstand teen idols and playing in jazz combos and R&B bands. He was an original member of Blood, Sweat & Tears in the late `60s and later joined his younger brother Michael in the jazz-rock horn band, Dreams.

When record mogul Clive Davis formed Arista Records in the mid `70s, the Brecker Brothers were among his first signings. Their first album quickly established them in the top tier of the funk/disco/jazz fusion market. Their single, "Sneakin' Up Behind You" placed them on the radio and on the pop charts in 1975, and Randy's frenetic rave up, "Some Skunk Funk," became a favorite among young jazz rockers.

The new compilation, Sneaking Up Behind You: The Very Best of The Brecker Brothers, kicks off with those two tunes, then winds through a brief history of the band, in the process stirring up fond memories of the latter days of the attempted jazz/rock marriage. It's an exhilarating trip, at times dated (cheesy clavinets and disco high-hat patterns) but always fiery and musically impressive. On that first album, Randy's trumpet and Michael's tenor sax were augmented in the front line by future superstar David Sanborn's distinctive alto saxophonics. Other musicians passing through the band included bassists Will Lee and Marcus Miller, drummers Harvey Mason, Lenny White and Terry Bozzio, and keysmen George Duke and Don Grolnick.

The writing was strong, the soloing incredible (Michael in particular showing the facility for which he would be come renown), the funk relentless. These guys followed in the steps of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Weather Report to lead fusion's second wave.

              Album Description

After years of creating great music and working with some of R&B's best known names; like platinum selling Jill Scott and Columbia recording artist Vivian Green, producer/writer/performer Fred David Kenney, Jr. is taking center stage with his debut release, "My Life... a Jesus Remix".

This debut carves out a unique place in today's Gospel and Contemporary Christian market. A dynamic combination of song & spoken word, these musical combinations echo a laid back R&B, neo-classical feel entwined with a Philly funk foundation. Completed by a canvas of Jazz inspired cords and classical string lines this ensemble fits best in its OWN category…this is truly "Christian Soul" at its VERY best!

Influenced by those spirited sounds of a melodic Philadelphia, this head-nodding harmony is, most importantly, doctrine-driven… teaching God's word in a manner far beyond typical praise and worship. Virtually every key verse and phrase is accompanied by a relevant Bible passage. Music enthusiasts (with a Bible and this CD) are exposed to God's word in proper context and in depth Bible concentration all wrapped up in the laid-back grooves our airwaves readily embrace. By incorporating essential Christian doctrine with praise and worship, this CD has all the makings of a Bible study in concert! "From song #1 to the last it's a ride for the listener. If you want to grow in your knowledge of God and strengthen your walk why not do it to a tune you can groove to?" And even if that's not your main objective at the very least you'll find yourself intrigued by the message in the music, wondering just what this walk is all about!

I agree with Asia Argento of Silver Gems Films who wrote on April 11, 2000, the following E-mail to Phil Ranelin who performed on the soundtract of her latest film "Scarlet Diva" and sent her a copy of his self-produced CD:

"Dearest Phil: I came back from Paris and found your fantastic CD! Thank you so much for remembering to send it. I am so touched by your music and have been listening to the 9 tracks for the past 2 days. It's a brilliant, heart felt piece of art, life, and I can feel your soul and personality shining through every note you produced. I am sure you're getting all the recognition you deserve for this wonderful album. My favorite tracks are Full Moon, and of course A Close Encounter... Loved also Ya Know What I Mean and the JJ Johnson tribute. BRAVO!!!! Your biggest Italian fan. Asia

5 out of 5 stars Great Straight-Ahead Jazz with beautiful trombone solos!.......1999-11-07

This CD is one of the most exciting discoveries I have ever made on amazon.com. I am sure that once you hear all the cuts, you will be very enthusiastic about this unique trombone player, Phil Ranelin. Just like JJ Johnson, the Indianapolis individualism of the hoosiers comes through strong and clear. My wonder is why more disc jockies haven't discovered what I have. This CD would be on the top charts if the public had a chance to hear it. Treat yourself to a real Close Encounter with some great jazz.

5 out of 5 stars The best jazz funk complation EVER!.......2007-02-10

This is without a doubt, the best jazz funk compilation I've ever bought. I went after it because I wanted Ramsey Lewis's version of the Grover Washington, Jr tune, "Sassy Stew", featuring the legendary sax player himself. It appears on Lewis's 1982 live album "Live At The Savoy" but I couldn't find that on CD anywhere for love or money.

It's first-class stuff from beginning to end and while I had the vast majority of the songs on here on their original albums, it's so nice to have them all in one place. Besides, there are quite a few I didn't have, one of which is Norman Connors' "Black Cow", a beautiful song which hip-hop heads will recognise as the basis for the Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz 1998 smash, "Déjà Vu (Uptown Baby)".

They are all full-length versions too, which is very unusual, so you get the whole 8mins 42secs of Grover Washington, Jr's "Mister Magic" and all 13mins 27secs of Alphonse Mouzon's "By All Means", just to name two examples. The music is all very accessible so anyone thinking about getting into jazz (or anyone who just wants something to play when their jazz-loving friends come to visit!) will really find this one useful. I can't recommend it enough.

My only grumble is with the inner-sleeve notes, which are not entirely accurate. Some people take these notes very seriously and it's always better to say nothing than to disseminate misinformation. For instance, Marcus Miller is wrongly credited as playing bass on Bob James's "Westchester Lady" (though the actual player, Gary King, is correctly identified). Miller did not appear on "Three", the album from which the song came, at all. On the Alphonse Mouzon song I referred to earlier, the credits say Herbie Hancock played piano, keyboards and fender Rhodes with Mouzon credited as having played synthesizer, percussion and drums. In fact, on this particular song, Mouzon played drums, percussion, Fender Rhodes, electric piano, and ARP string synthesizer. Herbie Hancock played acoustic piano only.

To some these might be minor even irrelevant details but they matter greatly to others.

Still an excellent CD though. Five stars without any effort at all.

4 out of 5 stars trace back Fridrik Karlsson works.......2003-11-13

From a friend who insisted a 'must have' cd, got me ended up listening to an cd by Fridrik Karlsson titled 'A new day' which provides real superb guitaring, thus now hunting down old Mezzoforte works. Listening to this cd 'Very best of Mezzoforte' bring back many fond memories, it is an enjoyable fine collection of timeless tracks that doesn't sound dated like other best of albums.

              3 out of 5 stars a good start.......2002-06-15

This is a good start for those that have no Mezzoforte albums. The songs are from album # 4 "surprise" and forward.
The remix of "Garden Party" are a disgrace though, in a techno/dance style using a drum machine. "The Squid" is from the last studio album - "monkey fields", and is a cool bluesy style tune with Hammond B3 organ. "Stratus" is unavailable elsewhere, and unknown to me. "Funkin marvelous..." is a medley-mix taken from a vinyl-album that was released in Iceland and UK, and features various artists. Other songs are hits, such as "EG Blues", "Spring Fever", "Expressway", "Midnight sun", "Daybreak". A vocal-tune featuring Noel McGalla,"This is the night " - taken from the sampler album "the saga so far" which came out 1985. Unavailable elsewhere.
If you get your hands on the Iceland-edition of this album, called "Garden Party Time", ( a dbl. cd ) you also get the song "Blow", and an extra cd containing 3 mixes of "Garden Party" + full length version of "Funkin Marvelous..."

The reason that I give the Album 3 stars, is that the band has better additional songs to offer to show what the band stood for in their most innovative years. They should have made this an full length double-cd album.
What the future will show is to see, as the band just has finished a reunion - nordic tour in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, and are planning to record a new album this year. I were on one of 4 concerts in Norway, and the band displayed a good style, improvisations, and groove. Mezzoforte still rocks!!!
