4 out of 5 stars Great for Wedding Music.......2007-05-17

We bought this and used some of it for our wedding-it was a beautiful addition to our special day.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-14

This CD was perfect for my wedding. It had just the right songs I needed, especially the song for the Father/Daughter dance!

5 out of 5 stars single use CD.......2007-02-15

I bought this CD to use in my daughter's wedding. We only used the one song, "My Little Girl". The rest of the songs although gorgeous, did not apply to our family situation. If you are looking for a specific song for blended families it could very well be on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Yours, Mine and Ours.......2007-01-12

Great CD with many songs that are requested at the wedding receptions that I DJ for.

2 out of 5 stars Over priced.......2007-01-12

This CD has a few good songs, but is way over priced. Sadly, it seems to be the only way to buy some of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars Best album I've heard in a very long time..........2007-06-18

Eliot Morris's debut album is perfect. Outstanding songwriting, outstanding production, outstanding vocals... If you're a fan of James Blunt, John Mayer, Counting Crows, etc... you will probably love this album. There have been a lot of comparisons to Eliot's voice an Counting Crow's lead singer Adam Duritz. Being a fan of Counting Crows also I think that's worth commenting on.

I think it's amazing how much the two sound alike both vocally and lyrically and Duritz is one of the greatest songwriters of the decade, but I think it's unquestionable that the best of his work is melancholy. Adam Duritz has transcended songs like Mr. Jones and Colorblind, but it's always to the well structured, shallow pop-hit like American Girls or Accidentally In Love that is the result. Adam is one of my favorite songwriters, so I don't mean any disrespect to him or to the talent it takes to craft a pop-hit. However, when you listen to Eliot's song This Colorful World, you discover something that's very dynamic, that also has real weight to it. It's not melancholy, but it's also not a flavor of the moment pop song. Eliot seems to effortless transition between the pessimistic and optimistic perspectives in his work and it doesn't come across as contrived (even if it probably is). If you have an appreciation for singer-songwriters you MUST check this guy out.

It's very difficult to give anything five stars, because when you do that I think you're saying you really believe the product could not possibly be any better, well this is a five star album. The weight behind this album is incredible, it feels like a life time of songs, slowly crafted to perfection. I have no idea how Eliot will follow this album, but I don't think he has to.

5 out of 5 stars yay.......2007-06-08

my sister got his cd while it was still in the making and it was an acoustic one with some of the same songs, he ahd some othe rones that i wish he would have kept on the cd but this cd is very good and my mellow cd

4 out of 5 stars Liked him in concert and Loved the C.D........2007-01-30

I saw Eliot Morris in concert with Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows and really enjoyed him, though I couldn't hear all of the lyrics from the lawn. This C.D. is terrific, with a nice mix of slow-paced and fast-paced songs. My favorite song is "This Colorful World," which he mentioned at the concert was the theme for Crayola Crayons ads. There are one or two songs that I'll sometimes skip when listening to the whole album, which is why I only rated this a four. But, if you like either Counting Crows or Goo Goo Dolls, then I suggest this album. He sounds just like the lead singer from the Crows.

4 out of 5 stars eliot morris.......2006-11-05

i saw eliot in concert this summer, he has a very interesting voice, the cd is great. this is a "go to" cd when you need some new music. i hope we will be hearing a lot more from eliot. i would recommend this to everyone who likes to step away from the same old top forty..............

5 out of 5 stars new fan.......2006-10-26

Got a sampler CD at borders, then saw him live in Chicago at the Double Door last week. He is one of the best new artists Ive heard. Don't know why they're not playing him on the radio yet - especially the best tunes on the album like "Faultline" or "No one has to know." He has an amazing blend of folk-rock-country, and the harmonizing is incredible. He also has tremendous range in his voice. Love the lap steel on faultline and others - amazing riffs. Pissed that the lap steel guitar player wasn't in town when he played last week, so he didn't play Faultline, but he promised next time he's in town.

Bottom line- recommend this album to anyone who likes groups with that blend, eg, anyone who likes the Jayhawks or the Bodeans. Every tune is really good, and some of them are incredibly catchy.

Gifted with an airy tenor that recalls no less than David Gates, Harry Nilsson, and Paul McCartney on one hand and Matthew Sweet and Squeeze's Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook on the other, David Mead has concocted a sophomore album that's the quintessence of deceptively breezy pop. New York-born and Nashville-wizened Mead again pays homage to economical songwriting and displays a host of artistic influences that span Tin Pan Alley, Lennon & McCartney, '70s folk pop, and post-new-wave sensibilities. Crucially, he shows allegiance to none of them, finding a refreshing liberation in the form, aided in the quest here by the subtle, haunting production of Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger. And if Mead's mostly sunny lyrical concerns could stand a dash of Big Apple tartness, it'll be hard for any pop true believer not to be charmed by the buoyant baker's dozen songs here, from the XTC-isms of "Girl on the Roof" and the title track to the early Elton John echoes of "Figure of Eight," and the spare, bittersweet melodicism of "What I Want to Do" and "Only in the Movies." --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pop for Nower People.......2004-01-16

An incredible evocation of Paul McCartney, Nick Lowe, Squeeze, Badfinger and more, this is one of the best pop albums in years. It's a great conversation starter, too. I was playing it in a store in Silver Lake and it turned out one of my customers was the guitarist on some of the tracks. I played it at my cart in Santa Monica and it caught the attention of a passerby, who is a friend of Mead's. Good news: he's apparently making a third album. I can't wait.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2003-09-27

This album is magic. Every song is fantastic, especially Comfort, Mine and Yours, and Echoes of a Heart. Give David Mead a chance if you like classic singer-songwriters. He is honestly one of the best singer songwriters out there today. He will convince you that people can still write great music.

3 out of 5 stars Nice pop which reminds of other songs.......2003-08-28

I plan to buy this album soon, based on what I've heard.
I first heard David when his song "Only in the Movies" was played in season two of the TV Show 'Ed'.
I do like the song but it kept niggling at me that it reminded me of something else.

I finally clicked that the melody/chords and Davids voice on the song are very much like Stephen Bishop and his song 'Madge' (from Bishop's album "Careless" in 1977). Nothing wrong with that though :)

"Girl on the Roof" is also very poppy and cool and shows off his voice. As others here have said, the songs sound very Wings-era McCartney.

So, if you like McCartney, Bishop and Elton John, you'll most probably like this album :)

5 out of 5 stars CAUGHT HIM LIVE & BOUGHT BOTH CD's on the SPOT.......2003-08-15

I had the fortune of catching David live last nite as the opening act for JOE JACKSON!!!! I was not the least bit disappointed. He could have done another hour on his own. Immediately after Joe's set ended I rushed to the front of the club & purchased "BOTH" David's CD's. Spent the nite listening to them as a wind down from the frenzy of a spectacular event. If you get a chance to see this guy------GO !!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sophomore effort.......2003-05-02

David Mead works in a style of music that, in years gone by, might have been topping the charts. Catchy melodies, strong production, and a beautiful voice should all be a recipe for success, but in this day and age of fragmented listening tastes and corporate radio playlists, Mead has not found a wide audience for his craft. And that's a shame, because "Mine and Yours" (like his debut album, "The Luxury of Time") is a very strong set of well-crafted pop/rock that would surprise a lot of people who think that music for adults has to be glossy or brainless.

On his debut, "Luxury of Time", Mead seemed to want to touch every stylistic base, succeeding at most of the music styles he tried his hand at. "Mine and Yours" is not as eclectic - on this album, he seems more content to remain in a melodic, mostly down-tempo style. It may not have all the high points that "Luxury" had, but it results in a more cohesive listening experience. Mead is more confident in his writing and singing abilities here, contributing gems like the pretty "All I Want to Do", the bouncy "Girl on the Roof", and the strong title track.

Likable, enjoyable, and definitely worth your time. If you enjoy pop music in the vein of the Beatles or Paul McCartney, then David Mead will be a most pleasant discovery.

Some artists spend their entire careers exploring the tension between gorgeous melodies and depressing lyrics. Former Scud Mountain Boy Joe Pernice has demonstrated that he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as such the masters of the field as Scott Walker, Stephen Merritt, and Morrissey. On his first seven albums, Pernice crafted lovely, dark, and often funny pop- and country-tinged ballads with choruses like "I hate my life." He made videos where his band rescues Death from the side of the road, then plays Frisbee with him. But on his eighth album, Pernice allows something very strange to creep into his music: joy. "Won't you come unbury me" he sings on the power-pop opener, "Weakest Shade of Blue." No, he hasn't suddenly morphed into Christopher Cross (there is that chanting chorus of "Cut the baby in two"), but this is largely a happy album. The backing musicians, meanwhile, have discovered an adventurous meeting place between the Smiths' guitar-driven anthems, the Zombies' vocally intricate garage-pop, and melt-in-your-mouth '70s Quaalude rock. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars VERY happy to have found this band!!!.......2005-12-24

If you like Elliott Smith's falsetto, Morrissey's crooning, XTCs ironic lyrics, peppered with Johnny Marr's licks read on. Now imagine all of that combined with the best The Smithereens could offer... you start to envision what The Pernice Brothers bring to the table. No, they do not match the sum of those parts, but they are great in their own right. This is by far the strongest album and you will hear pieces of all the aforementioned artists, but served with Pernice's individuality. This is a strong band, comprised of talented musicians and strong song writing. Give them a try, I doubt you'll be disappointed. Water Ban is a strong stand out, with How to Live Alone a close second. Number Two, Judy and Baby in Two are also very good.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - OK pop album.......2005-12-08

I really don't know what the fuss is about. This is a solid pop album, but its not great. At the best moments I find myself thinking "this is pretty good." All the other times I think "this is ok-but what else can I listen to."

Make no mistake these are well written songs, but none of them feel memorable, and the production is a bit sterile-sounding. The lonely sentimental sensitive guy aspect seems a bit contrived, but thats not my main complaint. Its just missing something, and it feels like there is nothing new here. Most of all it doesnt grab me. If I wanted to "discover a lonelier me" (I have the same complaints about that album) I would pull out Elliott Smith's self titled album.

2 out of 5 stars What hooks?!.......2005-06-17

Let's just say Joe Pernice was treading water with this album. So much so that the best songs on this album would be the lesser ones on his other abums.

The words "dreamy" and "blissful" are fleeting when listening to this bland album.

Thankfully, Pernice rebounded with this year's vastly superior
"Discover a Lovelier You".

Even the much vaunted Morrissey had his lulls.

5 out of 5 stars A True Essential Pop Album.......2005-04-01

There are far too many albums which shoot for pop and land at schlock. Turn on your radio and hear them pour out of the speakers. The Pernice Brothers not only hit the mark for absolutely blissful modern alternative "pop", they do it effortlessly. The lyrics are bitingly brilliant, the music is both crystaline and shimmering. I'm a fan of dark themes in music (I'll never get enough of Afghan Whigs' "Gentleman") but the genius in "Yours, Mine & Ours" is Joe Pernice's ability to explore the same emotional ground (loneliness, regret, anger) without dragging us through the mud of it all. No one does it better than JP in this regard. If you have a taste for seemingly airy pop with a dark underside, don't miss this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Ours.......2005-02-01

Ours

Firstly, the album is exceptional.

Secondly, this is why :

Wearing hearts on sleeves can be a dangerous business. Literally ( You'll die ). So why does Joe Pernice make it OK. It's simple. Because you want to hear it.

Right now, Joe has unwittingly documented most of my life in his songs and with ' Your, mine and ours ' he continues to do so. With the heartbreaking' Baby in Two ' he's sings of loss and regret but also of frustration and giving up. He does it so delicately he makes you glad you've shared these experiences until you begin to cry for him, and then for you, and then just for the sake of it. He even references the largest body of water in my locality ( The Irish Sea ) in ' Weakest Shade of Blue ' . He says he's as 'lonely as it' , which whatever it means, doesn't ruin a great song.. Continuing on from the 'perfect' pop of the last album, the songs are again neatly divided into different categories : Fast ( Waiting for the Universe to die - Weaker Shade - One Foot in the Grave ), Slow ( Baby in two - How to say Good-bye ) and the Grand sweeping mix of the two ( Number Two ) with it's knife like lyric exposing every raw nerve that the album sought out from the word go.. It was my album of last year. And even though it wouldn't qualify on anyone else's list, it's my album of this year too..

5 out of 5 stars One of his best live recordings - really!.......2001-09-18

The live record "Yours and Mine" (and its companion "Soul Eyes") are valuable and remarkable additions to the vast legacy of one of the greatest saxophone players in Jazz history. The two records contain 12 tunes Getz and his quartet recorded in Glasgow, Scotland, in June 1989 and 3 additional tracks from a gig in Denmark, recorded a month later. The liner notes state that the Glasgow date was "one of the days when everything was working", that puts it in a nutshell. Getz was in a great mood (listen to his zany comments after the first tune) and his superior talent got the necessary kick to yield a truly memorable record. So far, I considered "The Dolphin" his ultimate live record, but "Yours and Mine" is even better. He shines on ballads like "Yours and Mine" and "People Time", on up tempo rousers like "What Is This Thing Called Love" and on "Joanne Julia", a lovely reminiscence of his Bossa Nova days, when Getz became the most successful jazz musician in history. So, just sit back and relax and let an old friend soothe your soul with his utterly absorbing tone. This is a marvelous hour of Stan Getz at his best. Just great, if you are a Getz fan, and an incomparable experience if you're new to Stan Getz. You're in for a treat!

Husky vocals and slow, sultry melodies are the highlights of What's Mine is Yours. The style is intimate, akin to something heard in a smokey lounge. Each track blends well into the next, but I'd have to say that the stand out is I Know Your Name. Its low rhythm glides along your senses.

5 out of 5 stars Deep elm records really knows what is up........1999-03-29

Even though some may say Deep Elm is cashing in on Emo, no one can deny the content of the Emo Diary comps.Strongest tracks are those by Jimmy Eat World and Emo rock purveyors Samiam.

4 out of 5 stars a good introduction.......1998-12-16

Emo is a word I don't like to use to describe music. Classifying music isn't fair to the artist or to the songs they've put out. But, if you're interested in this kind of music (emo/post-hardcore/indie/etc.) then this is a good comp to get. There are a couple bands I knew ahead of time (Jimmy Eat World and Samiam), but then I found some very pleasent surprises (especially Pohgoh). If you can, I suggest you find their full length (on Outback Records). Overall, this comp does a decent job of showing the wide variety of music being put out by a bunch of young bands.

5 out of 5 stars great emo-core/indie compilation from known/unknown bands.......1998-11-15

This disc is a must-have compilation of bands on deep elm and some bigger labels. the bigger bands on this are triplefastaction, jimmie eat world, and samiam, but there isn't a bad song on here. check out lazycain and the triplefast songs. i don't own numbers 2 and 3 yet, but believe me, i'm getting them as soon as i have the money. if you like emo, or if you want an introduction, or you just want to listen to some really intense stuff, get this.

Those who cherish Davell Crawford holding the torch for the New Orleans piano tradition of Huey "Piano" Smith and Professor Longhair will be jolted by this ultraromantic collection of balladic standards. Crawford's hushed jazz attack is somewhat akin to vocalists Cassandra Wilson and Andy Bey, but even more in debt to the precise intonation and slightly sassy sophistication of Sarah Vaughan, who is name-checked on the title track, one of three Crawford originals. Of the remakes, there's a sublime extended workout of Charlie Smalls's "Home," a shrewdly rendered emphasis on the gospel underpinnings of the Beatles' "Let It Be," and a "Fly Me to the Moon" burnished with Vaughan-inflected elegance. And while die-hard Crescent City purists won't appreciate it, Crawford's clipped, sprightly, New Orleans-style piano is enough in evidence to keep the material from becoming overly sentimental. --Britt Robson
