Nicholas Payton not only has the short, round looks of Louis Armstrong, but the New Orleans trumpeter also captures his predecessor's fast, focused trumpet sound better than any other young musician. Just as important, Payton gives the music a friendly, playful feel, much like Satchmo's. On From This Moment, Payton mixes superior chops with a warm, Southern sensibility that's a delight. Payton favors a softer, more malleable tone like that of Armstrong or Miles Davis. This doesn't prevent him from darting with agility through uptempo bop tunes such as the standard "It Could Happen to You" or his own "In the Beginning." But Payton really comes into his own on ballads such as Kenny Dorham's "Fair Weather" or his own "To the Essential One," where he can hold out a single note and shape it to his own sultry, romantic purposes. --Geoffrey Himes

This album appears in the footsteps of 2004's The Girl in the Other Room but doesn't sound like a follow-up. Whereas The Girl saw the pianist-singer abandon the Great American Songbook for more personal pastures, From This Moment On sees her working out on standards done in traditional arrangements. Although the tracks here are by the likes of Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins, Krall sounds more at ease than ever before; perhaps digging deep inside on The Girl loosened her up. Backed by the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on seven tracks, Krall sings off the big band with ease. On the title track, she keeps up with a galloping bass and explosive brass arrangements and even ventures into scatting toward the end of the song. Her voice has also acquired a wonderfully worn texture in the past few years, and it works wonders on the ballads (just listen to "Isn't This a Lovely Day" and "Little Girl Blue" for instance). When standards are done like this, there's just nothing like 'em. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

From This Moment On is an 11-song collection that captures the Canadian-born sensation in full swing, in great company, and at the top of her game. It could also be called her strongest, most cohesive release to date. Krall--for the few still unknowing--is the 41-year old sensation whose cool, heavy-lidded vocals and strikingly sensitive piano-playing has helped her transcend barriers of genre to become a popular artist of the first order who has carved herself a permanent position at the top of the jazz charts. In songs, mood, and delivery, From This Moment On reveals Krall's personal ardor for that golden era of song-making, when Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and (especially) Nat "King" Cole were in their prime. It's musical territory that Krall has often explored, but this album was certainly not a case of simply repeating past formulas: Krall's A-team of support--producer Tommy LiPuma, engineer Al Schmitt, and arranger/bandleader John Clayton--were on hand to ensure that inspiration was kept on an edge, unhindered by the studio environment.

2 out of 5 stars Cover Artist.......2007-07-19

I listened Diana Krall live in concert tonight. I did not know much about her except that she is regarded as one of the greatest jazz artists of our generation which made me feel rather ignorant as I am a big fan of jazz. She played for an hour and a half tonight and she is obviously a talented musician. However, one thing struck me as odd ... for one of the shining lights of modern jazz, she sang one, ONE, original song. All of the music she played were covers of some of the greatest jazz music ever recorded. What became evident is that this talented woman bears a talent that is only skin deep. The one original song that she sang was horrendous, a lyrical disaster. I cringed each and every time the refrain was repeated. Granted the crowd, purveyors of insipid music one and all, ate it up. Her own music can't all be that bad can it? I walked away with the thought that music, as in fine arts, has simply become a playground for lazy artists to appeal to lazy fans who don't expect any more than rote regurgitation. Diana Krall is a cover artist. What galls me about her fame and fortune is that talent alone didn't make her famous. Is it because she's an attractive woman who can tickle the keys of a piano and sing in a sultry voice? There are multitudes of rock cover bands who get ridiculed for playing songs they didn't write. So, why does this woman get lauded for doing the same thing? Talented yes, but genius? ... to compare her to Cole Porter or Nat King Cole would be sinful.

5 out of 5 stars Diana Krall Excells!.......2007-06-27

Diana has one of the greatest voices in the jazz biz. She plays a great piano, sings as a song bird, and is truly a marvelous performer.
(Cute too.)

Buy this one. If you like jazz, it is a Must in your portfolio/collection.

5 out of 5 stars "From This Moment On" ~ Diana Krall.......2007-06-26

Listening to my CD of Diana Krall, "From This Moment On," is so relaxing.
Diana executes her songs with her strong, yet mellow voice.
The "back-up" band is a great asset to this CD, so between Diana singing and the band playing, you feel like you're "In Concert!"

Everyone HAS to hear it to believe it!

Mike

5 out of 5 stars From This Moment On.......2007-06-10

From This Moment On~ Diana Krall is easy listening jazz at its best. Ms Kralls vocal skills are remarkable and she sings these traditional jazz tunes with conviction and fortitude of a grandmaster of jazz. The book-let is beautifull if a bit sparse. The photographs are simply put it amazing and she looks stunning. The production value is right on the money and I like it since it so easy to listen to even for jazz beginners such as myself. Highly recommended indeed and I easily give this album 5 out of 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars What went on with Ms. Krall?.......2007-05-24

Repertoire consists of rather expected standards. All broadly covered brilliantly by so many vocalists in the past. Ms. Krall and her arrangers adds nothing at all.

Singing offers no surprise than a mainstream singer would do.

Orchestra is currently the darling big band of the time being. Good players, rare good ideas, nothing impelling.

There is an original and beautiful arrangement here: for the track 'How Insensitive'.

And that's all. Let's wait for the next Krall album.

It's said politics makes strange bedfellows. But it's got nothing on the peculiar marriage of art and history inspired by the tragic events of 9/11/01. Before that day, Daniel Rodriguez was a member of New York's finest, working as an NYPD security officer at the Manhattan South precinct. If it seemed an odd calling for a gifted, operatically trained tenor, it was employment many a journeyman artist could relate to: the proverbial "day job." As it turns out, no police academy in the world could have trained Rodriguez for the crucial role his city's darkest hour thrust upon him. While his colleagues mourned their staggering losses and toiled around the clock in rescue efforts, Rodriguez delivered renditions of "God Bless America" that rallied both his city and his country, much as Kate Smith's version of the Irving Berlin patriotic standard had done at the dawn of WWII.

Contemporary jazz great-producer Tom Scott took it from there, showcasing Rodriguez's powerful voice in this deftly arranged album focused sharply on personal and national inspiration. Taking his cue from his own hero, Mario Lanza, Rodriguez instills no small amount of drama in his performances, and it serves him well on tracks like the American folk classic "Shenandoah," a rousing take on Scarlet Pimpernel's "Into the Fire," and the relative Sinatra rarity "The House I Live In." The "God Bless America" here varies from the original single release, with Rodriguez reading the spoken intro once delivered by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Is Rodriguez the greatest tenor of modern times? No. But it's hard to imagine a talent better suited to the challenge history has thrust upon him; we're lucky--make that blessed--to have him. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Daniel Rodriquez.......2007-07-16

This alblum is a treasure to own and listen to. He really captures the spirit of patriotism. I have played his songs at a local fireworks show that I DJ at and his songs are up there with the other songs by artists by Mr. Lee "God Bless The U.S.A." Greenwood and other great artists. New York City and the nation needed him at a time when we were trying to recover from the worst tragedy in the history of the U.S.A. and he was there for us.

5 out of 5 stars Music From and For the Heart.......2006-11-25

Daniel's album is music to be shared with family and with friends to help further ensure warmth, strong family ties, and love of our beautiful country. His voice is magical, skilled, rich and so memorable that it can take one on a journey from yesterday to promise for a bright tomorrow. This is a superb rendering of past unforgettable music. His solemn rendition of the peace song "God Bless America" is the album's centerpiece and truly unforgettable....

5 out of 5 stars Daniel Rodriguez.......2006-11-11

I first heard of Daniel Rodriguez a couple of months ago when he sang on Jay Leno's show. He was/is WONDERFUL! His voice is beautiful, but he sings from the heart, and that makes him exceptional.

4 out of 5 stars Some definite winners on this album.......2005-12-14

My favorites are "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" where Daniel truly shows off his vocal talents. I could have done without the choir backup on "Ave Maria" but nonetheless a great rendition.

The ending that he has for the "The Lord's Prayer" almost brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. Well done Daniel.

4 out of 5 stars The Spirit of America.......2005-10-10

This is a great CD...of course, Daniel Rodriquez is the best!!!
As much as I enjoyed it, I do think "In the Presence", also by the same vocalist, is the ultimate. That could be because "In the Presence" was the first CD I had of this tenor vocalist, who is outstanding!

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Piano Doesn't Get Better Than This!.......2005-09-20

This was Marian's first album for Concord Jazz -- recorded just after her NPR radio show was launched -- and she was ready for it! She had lived and played through swing, Chicago-style Jazz with her husband cornetist Jimmy McPartland, her long-playing stint at the Hickory House in New York, Bop, Cool Jazz and the freer, more experimental 70's college campus jazz circuit and women's jazz festivals. If you look at the landmark photo, "A Great Day in Harlem" there are only three women in that picture: Maxine Sullivan, Mary Lou Williams and Marian. They always said Marian had three counts against her: She was British, white and a woman. After running her own label in the sixties and early seventies, Concord finally realized what a find she was. Here she plays with a passion and a drive seldom heard from any player male or female. She rides the harmonic and chordal wave of Bill Evans and takes it to the next level. There's more going on in one of Marian's rich, dense chords here than in the entire Top 40. With that, this two-handed pianist can swing like crazy. She never loses sight of the melody or the lyrics while she plays her instrumentals. The ingenious approach to "From This Moment On" redefines the tune and "Emily" is a ballad that will rip your heart out. There's a reason that this album has never been out of print since it was released at the end of the 70's. If you like beautiful music, swinging jazz and a brilliantly paced set with first-rate musicians and a leader with a first-rate mind and the angels on her hands, here you go.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great CD!.......2004-02-24

This is great stuff here. Being a jazz pianist, I have worked up and played a few of these tunes in performance, and they are a fun challenge. Marian is an awesome player, and I would say this is probably my favorite CD of hers. I highly recommend it!

Picking up where such seminal Eno recordings as Music for Airports and Another Green World left off, the inveterate innovator-producer's first recording in four years is a surreal tableau of loping beats and eerie sounds enveloped in dark yet serene atmospherics. With German percussionist Schwalm contributing softly swinging drumming, Eno is free to dabble in sounds ranging from Middle Eastern string quartets to crying machines and Vocoders to happy, babbling babies. One of Life's many highlights is Laurie Anderson's cameo on "Like Pictures Part #2," as she enunciates her words above the song's spooky, soothing ambiance. "Bloom" contrasts happy baby chatter against distorted heartbeats and sinister samples; "Night Traffic" paints an empty urban center at dusk with shifting shapes and '70s jazz percussion and piano. Throughout Drawn from Life, Eno and Schwalm cast a spell of spectral dislocation and foreboding. It's like what dying prostrate in the snow must be like--slow, sleepy, beautiful, and chilling. --Ken Micallef

    Album Description

'Drawn from Life' sees Brian Eno collaborating with German DJ J. Peter Schwalm. This collaboration produced soundscapes of jazzy, shuffling rhythms and strings that sway from cutting to sighing lay the foundation of most of the tracks. Laurie Anderson lends her voice, on 'Like Pictures Part #2,' This Astralwerks release has 10 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Eno and Schwalm a match in ambient history .......2006-10-08

This has become my second favorite Brian Eno album. If you are a fan of his music you will surely appreciate this recording. Laurie Anderson appears on two of the tracks as well.It is a more moving and rhythmical expression than some of Eno's dry ambience work, but it seems to take you on a sound journey of deeply emotional nightime movements. Along with J. Schwalm's composing genius the two really have a winner here. I suggest this album for any eno fan that likes his later work.

    3 out of 5 stars dissappoint.......2003-03-14

I had big expectations from Eno's new album. I love Ambient2, ThePearl, Apollo, ShutovAssembly.
The DrawnFromLife is getting me nervous! I think the babyscream in a song is a very bad idea. + The long silence after the last songs.
In sum up this album for me sounds like a bad MassiveAttack album.

    4 out of 5 stars Top-class electronica.......2003-02-24

What a great project! Definitely one of the better ambient electronica releases of recent times. As professional and classy as you would expect from a Brian Eno project, but Drawn from Life is also clearly the work of two men who complement each other per fectly. Schwalm’s inventive beats and percussive figures forming a perfect bed of sound for Eno’s rich sonic tapestry. This is ambient with a beat â€" think a high-gloss Arovane or Dntel â€" and a superb music to snuggle up to on a Sunday night. But as opposed to Music for Airports, for example, this works best with active listening, preferably in the dark to soak up the brooding, nocturnal, lush atmospheres. Don’t expect miracles: this needs at least one or two listenings to kick in. The rest, as they say, is plain sailing. Why only 4 stars? I don't like the vocally bits. I find them unwelcome, unecessary accessory (cheese alert) to this kind of music, regardless of whether its Laurie Anderson, Terrence Mckenna or Martin Luther King doing it.

4 out of 5 stars Lie Back, and Enjoy !.......2002-08-04

I always greet a new Eno album with caution...... he truley is a box of tricks, and for that I am grateful. This collaboration with J. Peter Schwalm however is quite wonderful.
I recall listening to this for the first time, and a second, and a third...continuously... I enjoyed it that much.
For me the lush strings which seldom stray in tone nor melody, is a typical Eno trade-mark.... and one that I love about his work the most. The added precussion makes for a slight twist from what I would have expected to hear on such compostions, but they do sit well, and do pull this album out of almost becoming another ambient collection.
The added bonus of having Laurie Anderson on, "Like Pictures part #2", just adds to my enthusiasm for this album.
It is hard to pick out any stand out tracks, as this album really works as one piece from start to finish.
    Lie Back, and Enjoy !

4 out of 5 stars (With)drawn from life.. cold, numb, yet organic........2002-06-22

I say 'cold' because that's the impression I get from Eno's work throughout this masterful recording; it starts with the chilly haze of "From This Moment" and though numerous sounds and tones are used, the overall impression doesn't fade. I have to say that an equal collaboration was the best idea for this album. Brian's work alone here would have ended up as Ambient 5: Frozen in Ice. Schwalm's light fleeting percussion, however, lends a wealth of shapes and textures to the music, giving it an organic edge and a pulse.

While this album is still quiet enough to serve as background wallpaper for reading or working, it's just busy enough to keep your attention if you sit down with a good pair of headphones. It's like a dream of floating in an endless white cloud while various images and sounds come into focus, clear for a moment, then vanish. City streets, Laurie Anderson talking about pictures, kitchen dishes clinking, swirling snow, and the occasional lapse of silence. Eno and Schwalm use no real melodies and only random fragmented words, but nevertheless draw the listener into their own web as convincingly as any fine lyricist I could name.

I just looked over those previous comments and realized they sound a little ridiculous - fanciful, maybe. That's the effect this album has. It's calming, subtle and tends to stimulate the imagination. It doesn't merely blend with the room or the background as most of Eno's other work does, but blends with your own thoughts as well. This is some of the best chill-out music I've ever heard.
