5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2003-09-22

This CD shows George Lewis and company at their best -- which is authentic New Orleans Jazz at its best!

The performances have a wide emotional range and an honesty that exceeds the players' virtuosity. Nobody could play this music like these guys!

Listening to this CD is the next best thing to being there in person.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage New Orleans.......2001-06-23

I have the original series of 10 inch George Lewis albums and have been afraid that if they were lost or destroyed this incredible music might be lost. The new CD is a marvelous achievment in both preservation of important classics and significant improvement in quality. George Lewis was undoubtedly one of the best clarinetist of all time. Anyone, be they Dixieland fan or not, need only hear him one time to be thoroughly hooked. His art in providing the soulful background in Burgundy Street provides an experience both mesmerizing and memorable. I highly recommend this CD and am confident that it will encourage you to learn and hear more about Dixieland and George Lewis.

5 out of 5 stars More Beautiful Than Ever!.......2005-09-11

If you want to hear some of what might have recently been lost in New Orleans, listen to this beautiful Cd of "traditional" New Orleans jazz recorded in an Ohio church in 1954. It's spiritually profound - that potent gumbo of joy and grief that only New Orleans could produce. The playing is superb, particualrly Jim Robinson's trombone, and the repertoire is one classic after another. Long live Preservation Hall!

5 out of 5 stars One of the National Treasures of American Music.......2003-09-09

Back in the 60s, I took off from high school Up North one winter to hitch-hike to New Orleans (beginning in the middle of a snow storm -- crazy kid) to see the Mardi Gras. At that point in my musical development I was a bass player in a garage band modeled after the electric blues heard on the first Paul Butterfield-Mike Bloomfield record, plus whatever other authentic Chicago Blues we could lay our hands on. With the fanaticism of youth, no other music existed for me. Little Walter was the king of harmonica players, Otis Rush was the ultimate guitar player, Freddy Bellow was the drummer of the generation.

New Orleans changed all that forever. A few nights later, enjoying the balmy weather of the Deep South, I walked by a somehat decrepit looking bar in the French Quarter and walked into the delerious decibels of some of the hottest Dixieland Jazz I had ever heard. Upon closer inspection, the source of this ferocious instrumental ecstacy was the George Lewis Band, a half dozen Old Masters of Dixieland now in their 70s or 80s, playing their hearts and guts out. I never had heard such intensity before except from those Chicago cats. This was a musical revolution to me. Plus the New Orleans jazzers were able to express a wider and subtler range of feelings. Thus my youthful ears were opened forever to all great music, without ideological prejudice -- from Charlie Patton to Ravi Shankar to Andy Statman.

But the credit for this education goes to George Lewis and company.

I don't know if any record can do justice to the live experience of the original giants of jazz creating this stuff. But the George Lewis tracks on this record come pretty close! For this alone this CD is well worth buying.

(BTW Jimmy Yancey is pretty amazing, too.)

5 out of 5 stars Two for one.......2002-12-20

You really get two CDs on one here; the first half bringing George Lewis and his clarinet at his very best, whereas the second half is devoted to the piano blues of Jimmy Yancey. I bought the record because of George Lewis, and the rating is meant for that part. The second half would only deserve about 3 stars in my opinion, particularly because I don't like the voice of Mamma Yancey, Jimmi's wife. But she only sings on the last five of the twelve gigs that make up the second part.
So, what makes this edition really stand out is the first half. It seems that the recording of this part is actually centered around George Lewis with his clarinet. And that is exactly why I like it so much. None of the other recordings of George Lewis that I know of put his clarinet that much in the center. It really gives me shivers to hear its sound emerging high above the rest of the band, sometimes joyfully, sometimes rather mournfully, but always played exquisitely by George Lewis. Get this record while it is still available!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-18

I've played this CD over and over a few hundred times. I still love it. Dr. Michael White and his group are super. If you like New Orleans jazz, you'll want this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Dr White at his best.......2007-01-11

Dr White pays tribute to a classic Jazz clarinetist, George Lewis. His rendition of "Just a Closer Walk" is done with great respect. Not a copy, but you know that it is for George Lewis. Some of the finest Classic Jazz to be found. I enjoy Dr White and Greg Stafford on nearly everything that they do.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Spirit inTraditional Jazz.......2000-06-25

My first encounter of New Orleans Jazz was in 3 years ago, when Dr. White and his band were invited as guest artists to OFAM's summer festival in Oregon. No music has ever touched me as profoundly as my first experience with what it came out of the clarinet played by a soft-spoken, scholar-looking jazz artist, who was gifted with a distinctive spirit. Dr.White plays his music with deep feelings, and his style of interpretation sets him apart from others in classical jazz. His music is always presented with great sensitivities, passions and respect to the tradition, through which one can imagine how New Orleans jazz might have been experienced in the old days. This CD represents Dr. White's musical talents in preserving the beauty and spirit of traditional jazz in modern time.

5 out of 5 stars forget the stars, I havent heard this particular recording.......2000-05-26

I dont count the ability to hear a few 20 second snippets as having heard enough to do the review but I do wish to make a couple of comments. Dr. White's PhD in in Spanish Literature not "Spanish". Also he embodies more than just a person who has listened to and musically absorbed the creations of the early masters of New Orleans Jazz. He also has a very human connection, being a part of the special New Orleans genteelness. I worked with Dr. White on a couple of projects and he and his family always have been graceful and elegant in navigating this modern world with all its conflicts and contradictions. What has this to do with the music? It is a hint for understanding that music that might seem naive and light heartedly fun has great depth and soul to communicate.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Jazz by a Master.......2000-05-15

This is a wonderful collection of authentic New Orleans Jazz inspired by the likes of Jellyroll Morton, Louis Armstrong and the giants of the genre. White who also boasts a PhD in Spanish and teaches the history of Jazz at a New Orleans university plays a mean clarinet. This CD is a tribute to his inspiration, the great clarinetist, George Lewis and Lewis is somewhere up in heaven enjoying the performance. This is New Orleans music at its authentic best. Buy this Cd and enjoy!

        Album Description

Recorded in 1953, these are the definitive recordings of the George Lewis New Orleans Band. Considered the most authentic New Orleans band, they launched a movement that culminated in Preservation Hall and helped shape the future of jazz and other musical styles.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What Old Masters?.......2005-03-02

It's a popular and understandable misconception given the manner in which New Orleans Jazz has been marketed for most of its post WW2 history, that only old musicians from New Orleans can play authentic New Orleans Jazz. The problem with this theory, unless one wishes to buy into the same ageism which relegated even the great Louis Armstrong himself (52 yrs of age in '53)to the ageing "Uncle Tom" basket at around the same time as these recordings; is that these men were not old! The men making this magnificent music are all only in their fifties at the most, with the exception of perhaps the bassist Alcide Pavageau.
These guys are in their "aesthetic prime" with their styles of playing, individual tonality and so forth having evolved to a very mature level of expression.
True, the trumpeter Avery Howard's lip always gave him problems and this was apparently sometimes exacerbrated by his intemperance. So we sometimes find that his lead phrasing and improvisational asides sometimes don't seem to complete themselves. That being said, the "Kid" certainly drives the band in that manner unique to New Orleans trumpet players, with a spacious energy and passion which make up for any technical difficulties he may have been experiencing.
The blues and slower rolling tempos here exude an easy & relaxed luxuriosness of phrasing with an underlying broadness & solidity of rhythmic texture; whilst the faster tempos carry all that is wonderful and exciting about real New Orlaens music played by men & women such as these,in their prime, not their decline!
George Lewis and his band(s), as all great bands & individual artists should, evolved continuosly over some 20 years of recorded documentation.
This is one of the very important George Lewis sessions to have as part of an overall collection of that bands work and is not a bad place to begin if you don't have any.
"...so remember, the next time we're in your neighbourhood, to drop in & say "hello" and we'll talk about our favorite music, that good old New Orleans Jazz".

5 out of 5 stars Are You KIDDING?.......2005-03-01

Nothing special about this CD? The Jazz Fan who wrote the thumbs-down review must have been suffering from clinical depression. Just listen to the sample tracks -- these guys were roaring! The George Lewis band was one of the most intense, ecstatic, authentic New Orleans jazz bands of the century, and this CD is a very favorable example of these Old Masters at the height of their powers. (Another great one is their CD "George Lewis and His New Orleans Stompers" on Blue Note).

        2 out of 5 stars Clarinet Jazz.......2001-04-03

While this cd contains a well rounded selection of various Jazz pieces, no piece really stands out as being utterly incredible. This cd is recommended for only the true jazz enthusiast.
