The performances have a wide emotional range and an honesty that exceeds the players' virtuosity. Nobody could play this music like these guys!

One of the National Treasures of American Music.......2003-09-09
New Orleans changed all that forever. A few nights later, enjoying the balmy weather of the Deep South, I walked by a somehat decrepit looking bar in the French Quarter and walked into the delerious decibels of some of the hottest Dixieland Jazz I had ever heard. Upon closer inspection, the source of this ferocious instrumental ecstacy was the George Lewis Band, a half dozen Old Masters of Dixieland now in their 70s or 80s, playing their hearts and guts out. I never had heard such intensity before except from those Chicago cats. This was a musical revolution to me. Plus the New Orleans jazzers were able to express a wider and subtler range of feelings. Thus my youthful ears were opened forever to all great music, without ideological prejudice -- from Charlie Patton to Ravi Shankar to Andy Statman.
But the credit for this education goes to George Lewis and company.
I don't know if any record can do justice to the live experience of the original giants of jazz creating this stuff. But the George Lewis tracks on this record come pretty close! For this alone this CD is well worth buying.
(BTW Jimmy Yancey is pretty amazing, too.)
Two for one.......2002-12-20
So, what makes this edition really stand out is the first half. It seems that the recording of this part is actually centered around George Lewis with his clarinet. And that is exactly why I like it so much. None of the other recordings of George Lewis that I know of put his clarinet that much in the center. It really gives me shivers to hear its sound emerging high above the rest of the band, sometimes joyfully, sometimes rather mournfully, but always played exquisitely by George Lewis. Get this record while it is still available!

Album Description
Recorded in 1953, these are the definitive recordings of the George Lewis New Orleans Band. Considered the most authentic New Orleans band, they launched a movement that culminated in Preservation Hall and helped shape the future of jazz and other musical styles.Customer Reviews:
What Old Masters?.......2005-03-02
These guys are in their "aesthetic prime" with their styles of playing, individual tonality and so forth having evolved to a very mature level of expression.
True, the trumpeter Avery Howard's lip always gave him problems and this was apparently sometimes exacerbrated by his intemperance. So we sometimes find that his lead phrasing and improvisational asides sometimes don't seem to complete themselves. That being said, the "Kid" certainly drives the band in that manner unique to New Orleans trumpet players, with a spacious energy and passion which make up for any technical difficulties he may have been experiencing.
The blues and slower rolling tempos here exude an easy & relaxed luxuriosness of phrasing with an underlying broadness & solidity of rhythmic texture; whilst the faster tempos carry all that is wonderful and exciting about real New Orlaens music played by men & women such as these,in their prime, not their decline!
George Lewis and his band(s), as all great bands & individual artists should, evolved continuosly over some 20 years of recorded documentation.
This is one of the very important George Lewis sessions to have as part of an overall collection of that bands work and is not a bad place to begin if you don't have any.
"...so remember, the next time we're in your neighbourhood, to drop in & say "hello" and we'll talk about our favorite music, that good old New Orleans Jazz".
