This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Killer fusion.......2005-02-04

These guys are hot! I'd call them the "poor man's Tribal Tech"
(Scott Henderson, Gary Willis, etc.). The bass player - and primary
composer - is right up there with the bass greats (IMO).
Chicago is a hot-bed for great new fusion groups, and KTC is
no exception. I can also recommend the groups Bad Dog U and
3 Hole Punch in addition to Kick The Cat. Just one thing guys
(if you read this): change the silly name. How about "Kiss the Cat"?
This album is highly recommended!

I heard these guys on a college radio station a year or so ago and could not find the CD for the longest time .... Anyway, if you like progressive jazz (jazz-rock fusion, whatever you want to call it), you should add this to your collection. 'Kick the Cat' obviously has been influenced by many of my favorite musicians like Jaco Pastiorus, Jean Luc Ponty, King Crimson, Chick Corea, and maybe a little Santana (his solo stuff anyway) to name a few BUT they add their own style and spice (oh yeah, the first song is a tribute to some jazz guy named "Ramsey", anybody know who that is?)... just kidding, I guess you can add the "R" man as one of their influences. Great musicianship, great songwriting, okay production... The production is the only reason I didn't give this a 5 star rating. I hope to hear a lot from these guys in the future AND I hope they find a producer, engineer, or mixer to do them justice (I apologize to whoever was responsible for these on this CD; it is just my opinion as a jazz fanatic, musician, and consumer)... KICK THE CAT, KICKS BUTT!!!!!!

Solid Fusion.......2005-02-24

These four young guys from Chicago are getting more confident
and solid with each album. "Weirdo", their follow up to the self-titled
1st CD is as good as it gets, injecting (much needed) fresh blood
into the somewhat stagnant jazz-rock/fusion repertoire.
Tasty arrangements, rapid fire guitar & bass solos, a very tight
drummer and a superb keyboardist - who holds back at times,
thus making sure that every note counts, a rare thing these days.
A touch of "Tribal Tech" influence is evident in KTC's music, but
that's definitely not a bad thing. Keep up the good work guys, and
please change the silly name :-) Recommended.
