    Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

    Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

    Denise Jannah sounded like a less r&b Anita Baker and a satiny-voiced Dianne Reeves. Her swinging renditions of songs and her unique phrasing are the album's main selling points. She did an irresistibly swing-y "My Favorite Things" complete with walking syncopations and crooned "The Shadow of Your Smile" in French. Best of all is her rendition of Monk's "`Round Midnight" where she entered and re-entered the song subtly like a horn. Definitely a talent worthy of investigation and if there is true justice out there, she should be as famous as those other jazz divas basking in media attention for soing what Jannah does effortlessly and with loads of sophistication.

    I thoroughly enjoyed Denise Jannah's album "The madness of our love". I am novice to the jazz vocalist scene but I found Jannah's vocals and song selection great. The title song is a rich and melodic song that is perfect "chilling" music. On "My Favorite Things" Jannah delivers a beautiful but different rendition of the popular song. Denise Jannah is an amazing jazz singer and I would strongly suggest that anyone interested in jazz vocalists or Sarah Vaughan to purchase the album.

    But just the right age to make some great catchy music with strong powerful lyrics that shows she's a young woman that is confident, yet feminine.

    This album really should be hitting the charts as it's one of the best I've heard in awhile coming from a new artist. I can't recall any females Gen X'er that had a good album out recently... anyhow it would be a crime if Ana goes by unnoticed.

      Album Description

      This CD presents a tribute to Thea Musgrave on the occasion of her 75th birthday. While a scholarship student of Nadia Boulanger, Scottish-born Musgrave was the winner of the Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize, and has since gone on to win numerous awards and honors. Her works have been widely performed in Britain, Europe and the USA. Musgrave is active as a conductor of her own music, and has worked with most of the major British and American orchestras. The New York Virtuoso Singers, arguably America's finest `new music' chorus, are heard in this loving tribute to Musgrave. The CD opens with a major Musgrave work-the 26 minute long "For the Time Being: Advent", based on W.H. Auden's poem "For the Time Being" (pub. 1945), a work of self-questioning in time of war and at a time of loss. This work is a tour de force, not only for its huge variety of vocal textures, but also for the manner in which Musgrave sustains, over its entire length, the sombre intensity of Auden's vision. British film star Michael York is the narrator on this recording. "Black Tambourine", on six poems of Hart Crane, is performed as a continuous 18 minute span. The cycle captures the wide range of moods of the poetry, from the madrigal-like trio of `Pastoral' to the tinkling salon piano of "My Grandmother's Love Letters". The CD also includes three delightful cycles taken from the anthology "Poems on the Underground"-a series of madrigal-like works setting poems that were exhibited in the trains of the London Underground.

        "Stride" and "Love Mission" are both FANTASTIC songs for playing when you're with the one you love.... chances are that they haven't heard of this album. It's a real pleasure to listen to.
