About the Artist
Marcello De Francisci grew up in Spain where he studied music and painting. He began composing music at the age of thirteen. In 1993, he released his first CD which was used for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and distributed commercially in Europe. Marcello moved to Los Angeles in 1993, worked three years for composer Hans Zimmer, and has established Blue Labyrinth Studios in Hollywood to service the film community. His score for "Sweet Piece" mixes 60s Euro-jazz evocative of Nino Rota and Piero Piccioni with progressive film music conventions into a hypnotic brew.

Product Description
Soundtrack EP features two cuts and dialogue from the forthcoming Southern gothic pistol thriller, “Sweet Piece”, written and directed by Silvanus Slaughter. Cut 1 is “That Collins Boy” and melds hip Piero Piccioni finger-popping Euro-jazz to millennial production. A dialogue excerpt with sound design follows, and climaxes with “Love Speaks Its Name,” a plucked stand-up bass and strings lament that explodes into a romantic theme best tagged as high-end Vangelis with a dash of early Morricone. Note: This is a limited edition EP, very handsomely packaged. The full-length soundtrack is not scheduled to arrive at stores until November 2001 and will include De Francisci’s entire score alongside period remakes and remixes. This edition is pressed exclusively on Taiyo Yuden compact discs for optimal sound reproduction.

3 out of 5 stars Hamlet sound track - Patrick Doyle.......2006-03-10

I spent a lot of time trying to get hold of this CD but I must say I am mildly disappointed. I thought Patrick Doyle's music for Branagh's Henry V was brilliant and that was why I was determined to obtain this sound track as well. Henry V is not Hamlet in terms of theme and plot but I think the music here tends to be too low key and lacking in drive, unlike Henry V. It is still very good in places and clearly the work of an excellent composer, but not quite up to Doyle's previous standard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful masterpiece!!.......2002-02-22

Patrick Doyle has truly composed an awesome piece of work. The score is so well done that you can feel the emotion coming through the music alone. This is by far my favorite soundtrack and I listen to it quite often.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collaborations.......2001-06-12

Doyle fans are aware that he collaborates regularly with actor/director, Kenneth Brannagh. With the Hamlet score, he again writes powerful complementary music which also stands alone as worthy to be performed in concert. I would be interested to hear lengthier tracks such as accompanied the lengthy, but indeed beautiful and patient, movie. (The only mistake was Billy Crystal in the movie. I thought Robin Williams did fine work.) Although, I confess, this is my least listened to in my soundtrack collection, I do enjoy it, and believe it deserves accolades.

5 out of 5 stars Patrick Doyle's finest score.......2000-06-26

This is certainly one of my top 3 Patrick Doyle scores and a towering achievement. The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

4 out of 5 stars For Fans of Easy Tempo, Thievery Corporation & the like.......2001-06-21

If you like the retro jazz coming out of the England and Italy trip hop scene, you will probably like this a lot. I read an advance copy of this novel and it is controversial stuff - a heady mixture of ultra-serious spiritual themes competing with sex and violence that is bound to polarize some people. The music is not what I expected at first as the book refers to lots of early 60s songs. But it's original, dreamy and has me glued to see how the filmmakers have translated this intense material to screen. I only subtract one star because the EP is kind of brief.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!.......2001-06-01

I cannot understand these reviews because what I heard was terrible! After looking at the film's site, maybe the filmmakers should find another way to spend their money and spare the world of Sweet Piece!

5 out of 5 stars could be morricone, rota, or donnagio..........2001-01-29

a friend who knows my love of italian soundtracks, especially from the 60's, turned me on to De Francisi. this is really great stuff and i want to hear more from this composer. anybody know anything about the movie?

4 out of 5 stars How Sweet It Is.......2001-01-07

Plain and simple this music is inspiring in a haunting way and I play it over and over again while painting scenes from Italy in my studio. It's a must for entertaining and dinner parties. Can't wait for the movie.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting discovery!.......2001-01-04

I picked this up at a record store in North Carolina while I was visiting a friend. I bought it just because the packaging intrigued me. Friends in the industry who I was visiting had told me about this production, which remains cloaked in much secrecy, but it's rumored to be about a young hustler caught up in weird circumstances in a small southern town. The music and production on this preview EP is top-notch, and very cinematic in feel and scope. I wish the CD was a little longer - it's definitely a tease - because it creates a dreamy, jazzy and romantic world with authority and panache. The last cut, `Love Speaks Its Name' is kind of a a shocker: it morphs on a pin into what must be the climax of the film into a sound that is final and heavenly. Looks provocative from the inside cover art, and the swatch of southern-drawl dialogue with the hustler talking to his girlfriend, I assume, about "people lying, betraying each other, wanting pretty things they see other people've got" hangs in memory.
