5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

5 out of 5 stars Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

5 out of 5 stars How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

Merle Haggard's return to his original label, Capitol Records, has revitalized him creatively and musically. Slick but unobtrusive production by Jimmy Bowen (Haggard's old MCA producer) and Mike Post showcase his vocals--as strong as they've been in years--on a blend of Haggard originals and skillfully chosen covers. The atmospheric title track vividly evokes desolation and loneliness. "Where's All the Freedom" and "Rebuild America First" reflect Haggard's thoughtful, libertarian patriotism, the latter including an unsubtle jab at the war in Iraq. "What I've Been Meaning to Say" and "Mexico" reaffirm Haggard's continued skill at creating brilliant love songs. "Some of Us Fly," a philosophical duet with Toby Keith, showcases Keith's often-underrated skills as a balladeer. The cover numbers--Willie Nelson's "It Always Will Be" and "Leavin's Not the Only Way to Go," one of Roger Miller's more reflective songs--fit hand in glove with the originals. Many perceive Haggard as a legend. Yet on Chicago Wind, he demonstrates the ability to remain timeless, yet thoroughly of the moment. --Rich Kienzle

1 out of 5 stars Copy Protected - Do Not Buy If You Have An i-Pod.......2007-02-23

Once again, EMI has created a copy protected CD which can be imported as WMA or AAC but not MP3. Once again, Amazon provides minimal warning about this (see guidance under "Format"), instead of putting advice in our faces - which it does excellently to sell product.

I'll be returning this CD as not fit for purpose. If you can afford to, I suggest that you also buy and then return it, to maximise cost and inconvenience to the label and Amazon. If not, just don't buy it, regardless of the quality of the music.

This crap has to stop. 1 star review because Amazon prevents a zero star choice.

5 out of 5 stars LET'S STICK TO THE MUSIC.......2007-02-10

I have read many of the foregoing reviews and find it interesting that much time is spent (and wasted, I might add) on the format of the CD and not on what's important here--the music. So, copying and protection issues aside, let's stick to the music.

Merle Haggard is one of those legendary musicians who many might think is of a bygone era and, perhaps, genre. After all, there are many who now divide Country into multiple groups including Country, Western, Country Western and Contemporary Country. Frankly, I think all of the compartmentalizing and categorizing is a crock of road apples. But I digress.

CHICAGO WIND is an offering that demonstrates the timelessness as well as the timeliness of the music of Merle Haggard. If you're a Haggard fan you won't have much difficulty incorporating this new work into the Haggard music anthology. Here is the voice, the delivery and the excellence that you have come to expect. If you are new to Haggard, CHICAGO WIND offers music that stands up nicely with anything that is currently topping the Country charts. This should be readily recognizable by the fact that Haggard regularly lends his vocal and musical abilities to productions by such current Country superstars as Gretchen Wilson and Toby Keith. In fact, the final track on this album features a duet with the latter.

In a world that is dominated by a plethora of portable music devices, I suppose that copy protection on a purchased album is lamentable but it really doesn't diminish the musical excellence of Haggard's latest and, arguably, greatest.

THE HORSEMAN

5 out of 5 stars I Love It.......2007-01-12

This Is A Realy Great Album By Merle Haggard. For The Fans Of Merle, This Album Is A -Must Have.

5 out of 5 stars The Hag is Back.......2006-11-18

Best vocals I have heard Merle record since the mid-eighties. I thought, due to age, and other elements, that his voice was headed down-hill. I don't know whether his vocals have improved or if he has just learned to sing slightly different to match the change in pitch. In my opinion this album as a whole, contains his best music in twenty years. None of the songs stand-out above the rest, but they are all solid. His past 5-6 studio albums contain 1-2 great songs surrounded by very bland ones. Recent albums may have had good lyrics, but the music doesn't stand up to the standards Merle has set in the past. "Chicago Wind" is an surprisingly wonderful exception to this.

It is a shame that most C&W radio stations will never play any songs that make their listeners think about political, social, economic or environmental issues.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent CD, but not with copy protection.......2006-10-10

I have nothing to add to the many favorable reviews on this page.Haggard seems to get better with age. Or maybe my tastes are changing as I grow older. This is a very laid-back, enjoyable collection of songs.

But this the one and only time I will buy one of these copy-protected CDs. It was tough to get it to play on my computer and even more difficult to rip it for my MP3. I finally got what I wanted, but haven't a clue how I did it.

If you buy this CD, be aware that you might have to work to listen to it.

1 out of 5 stars The original is not still the greatest........2003-06-16

When the Original Sound label began packaging their "Oldies But Goodies" LPs in the late 50s, it was a new concept to have original hits by the artists who made them famous gathered together on one album. It was a good idea and a groundbreaking one. But man, before the advent of the compact disc, people who wanted oldies were usually better off collecting 45s. A lot of times those old LP collections were hampered by poor sound and, now and then, an alternate recording of a song included instead of the hit version. I'd have to say though, that previous to the CD era, Original Sound probably did it better than most. When Rhino got into the game a few decades later, they didn't want to settle for inferior versions. They made sure that they used the hit versions of the songs and mastered them from the best available sources. Rhino was an inspiration and now there are lots of great reissue labels out there producing quality compilations for the oldies fan. Original Sound isn't one of them. Their CD series leaves a lot to be desired. The sound quality is lacking in every volume I've heard. On this particular volume, the non-hit Candix version of The Beach Boys' "Surfin' Safari" is used instead of the hit Capitol version. Also the compilations themselves seem to have been thrown together without a whole lot of thought or planning. Most of the songs on a particular volume will span the period from the late 50s to the mid-60s and then a song from the 70s like "Tie a Yellow Ribbon..." or "Feelings" or "Mr. Big Stuff" will be thrown into the mix. Couldn't they at least focus on a particular decade for each disc?
My advice to anyone who wants to build a library of quality reissues of classic pop singles: avoid Original Sound releases. There are too many other high quality collections available these days.

4 out of 5 stars As Usual, Very Good (mostly).......1999-11-03

The Oldies But Goodies collection on Original Sound are generally good buys, and this one is no exception. Many of the selections are unarguable classics - Lesley Gore's "It's My Party", "Come Go With Me" by the Del(l?) Vikings, Frankie Ford's "Sea Cruise". Other items are perhaps not classics in everyone's mind, but still great - Bettie Everett's "Shoop Shoop Song", Preston Epps' "Bongo Rock" and especially "Don't You Just Know It" by Huey "Piano" Smith. But, as is usual for this series, there are a few what-th'-heck-is-THIS-doin'-here selections, and as usual, most of them are from the 70's. There are three 70's tracks here, and noting that Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" is the best of the three says volumes. Well, your CD player has a track skip button for a reason. In general, a great collection.

a great reference of some fine sounds, although the genious of this music was in the mix making the middles and ends of tracks quite booring and predictable. does anyone know of any similar music that has been mixed from this period?

4 out of 5 stars Looks ok to me.......2006-05-21

A reviewer reported repeated tracks on this CD. I think reviews are being attached to the wrong albums here.
I have the original LP and there are 12 tracks instead of the 16 listed for the CD so you're actually getting more for your $.
And I can't find any repeated tracks of those listed. Maybe there was an error in manufacturing the CD itself.
Anyway, if you like the "original" Rock & Roll... the "real" Rock & Roll get the other CD Vol's 6 AND 7, or the CD Vol's 7 THRU 9.

2 out of 5 stars What's with the repeated songs?.......1999-07-10

Is there a reason why four of the songs are repeated? I think it's a waste of money to pay for seventeen songs when you're really only getting thirteen. Other than that, I like several of the songs; if there was more variety, instead of repitition, it would be a better CD.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Collection.......1999-11-03

This CD continues the tradition of great OBG albums. If anything, the tracks are even better than normal - "The Letter", "Our Day Will Come", "One Fine Day", "Rescue Me" and "Since I Fell For You" are all fantastic, and most of the rest are maybe half a step behind. As usual, the inclusion of a few 70's tracks makes for some odd listening, but the two selections ("La La Means I Love You" and "Reunited") aren't that bad. A great collection to start out with.

    Album Description

Equal parts hard funk and electro-rock, 6.0 is a benchmark for the Chicago sound of the new century. Between Chris Randall's sultry vocal stylings and the fiery Hendrix-meets-Helmet guitar work of Miguel Turanzas (formerly of indie-rock mainstays Catherine), 6.0 pushes the envelope, setting new standards for modern music.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Review.......2002-10-09

From James Brown is dead and working with many Mainstay industrial groups (KMFDM/PIG) SMG/Chris Randall has refined all his previous work and created a great CD that does not fit into any one Genre of Music type. 23 previous reviews and nothing under 4 stars should tell you, if you made it to here, you'll like this cd purchase. This guy has to be the most underrated musician to come out of Chicago and of course his band mates are complete talents as well. Great vocals and great funk-rock with jazz undertones await your ears.

    5 out of 5 stars SICK'S .0 !!!.......2002-08-09

This album is sick! awesome stuff, i dont see why people said this was an average album?!?! This in my opinon is the best S.M.G release since the wax trax! days, and the reason is....it almost feels wax trax-ish. A very good album using a few trippy samples, somewhat like " the torture technique " album, with the smooth/harsh appeal of "burn". Also at the same time flooding the album with its own originality. A very VERY underrated album. If you like the old S.M.G stuff mixed with the new vibes then you should definately look into 6.0 stand out tracks "Machine (no!)" "Down on Me" "Loser" "End"

    3 out of 5 stars Familiar Territory.......2002-01-05

I've been a Sister Machine Gun fan since Burn. I have all their albums now, Torture Technique, Sins of The Flesh, Burn, Metropolis, [r]evolution, and now 6.0. After Burn SMG took a definite turn away from the electronic and began exploring the more organic and funky organ, sax, and guitar which was present at such memorable moments on Burn as the first track, Red. This all culminated with [r]evolution, a funky, techno-organic, jazz/dance album full of catchy grooves and simply excellent instrumentation. 6.0 can't help but fall short for me because its such a left turn in what seemed like a natural progression for the band. I say "band" but its actually just Chris Randall because he seems to have dropped them on this album in favor of Miguel Turanzas only. 6.0 isn't the worst album in thw world but it doesn't have the same life and energy that previous efforst did. In the end the album seems shallow and a few brilliant beats here and there don't really get me going. I like SMG (and other bands) because they take me places where I haven't been before musically. 6.0 feels like familiar territory where I was hoping for an undiscovered country.

    5 out of 5 stars 6.0 - Amazing.......2001-08-08

This is one of the greatest albums I own, with the possible exception of the other 5 Sister Machine Gun Albums, but I'm not sure. They are all just so great!!!

    5 out of 5 stars 6.0 IS A 10.0.......2001-07-11
