5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection.......2006-05-15

Here is a 21 song collection by Razor & Tie of one of the finest voices of American Music. All of Sonny's biggest hits are included: "Bright Lights, Big City", "Young Love", and "Take Good Care of Her". More importantly are the inclusion of other numbers from his vast catalog: specifically, I'm referring to: "Behind the Tear", "Running Bear", and "It's the Little Things". The sound and mixing presented on this album are second to none. You will most definately enjoy this album, and for the money, you'd be nuts if you dont grab it while it's still available.

3 out of 5 stars Wrong, Dogbreath(s).......2004-12-01

First of all, "Sonny" recorded the cover for "Empty Arms" from Ivory Joe Hunter who first recorded the song (Hunter wrote it, in addition to "Since I Met You Baby" which "Sonny" also recorded). Sonny James very wisely chose proven hits (as apparently Theresa Brewer did occasionally); he had minimal writing skills himself and apparently had no association with songwriters who wanted him to record their songs. Sonny James cannot be faulted in his ability to carry a note but perhaps nobody else in recording history has counted so much on a plan of success by "interpreting" others' songs from pop/soul/blues and presenting them to the hardcore country market who never strayed from station K-HIK. Except for "Young Love", there is nothing in his discography that somebody else has not previously recorded and done a better job of it to the level of "Young Love". The songs here are all presentable and smoother than many country songs of the time, but odds are you will never find any artist copying Sonny James, as short of "Young Love", there is little original in his choice of material. So, milk them cows, Sonny boy; it worked.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums!.......2002-11-13

I purchased this CD because I liked a couple of Sonny's songs. I didn't recognize many of the titles, and when I played the album, I was amazed at how many "big hits" Sonny James was famous for. I can listen to this CD (album) every evening, and never get tired of it. It's truly one of the best album purchases I have ever made. Truly a GREAT pop-country album for any collection!

5 out of 5 stars The Southern Gentleman !.......2002-05-05

I first came to appreciate Sonny James via the late, lamented "60s country" channel of net radio.com. What a treasure trove of classic country that was! "Young Love" captures most of the Southern Gentleman's #1 hits of the 60s and early 70s. The selections are numbered in the same sequence that Capitol records released them publicly. Sonny made a specialty of taking soft rock/pop hits and "countryfying" them. High points are "Born to Be With You" (The Chordettes), "Take Good Care of Her" (Adam Wade) and "Empty Arms" (Theresa Brewer) plus "Behind the Tear" and "Heaven Says Hello". This is mellow country at its best. While Sonny often did his own version of other's efforts, he is no copycat. These country versions are almost new songs in themselves-with his own unique spin. Was that a cry in his voice? Any man able to countryfy The Chordettes is a talented artist. According to Billboard, Sonny had 64 charted country hits from 1953-1983. "Young Love" will give the appreciative listener a solid sampling of the best of those 30 years. Unlike so many albums which sneak in duds, all 21 tracks were in the Billboard top 10 and 15 (!) were #1. If you like your country on the soft side, this CD is (pardon the pun), in a "World of Its Own".

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-08-14

What can you say that hasn't already been said about the extreme talent of Sonny James. I have followed his music from the 1950's and haven't heard a bad record yet, He is a wonderful person as well as a great singer and there will never be another Sonny James. I rate him up there with Elvis, Conway Twitty, Gene Watson, Eddy Arnold, and all the country greats that I admire. He's the best!

5 out of 5 stars A bona fide classic.......2005-10-22

I have to respond to the last reviewer's comments about the sound quality of this disc. Riverside masters were hit and miss at times, but I apparently have a copy of an entirely different album than the one he describes. It's not the greatest master I've ever heard, but it's far from "unlistenable" as he claims. I'm hearing Rollins' tenor right out front with strong bass a fairly stong bass pressence.

But of course, it's the music that matters most and this release contains all the wit and imaginative improvisational fun that are the hallmarks of his recordings of this period. Sounds OK to me.

1 out of 5 stars Classic recording, lousy transfer.......2001-10-02

I owned this on cassette and thought I'd replace it with a better quality CD. Boy, was I wrong. The sound here is so poor that it makes the CD almost unlistenable. It sounds like the CD was made from the studio track that included bass and piano only. Sonny sounds like he is in another room, and it's really just awful. I think the original release was on Riverside, so look for that instead. This is a travesty, and not worth the price, if you can believe that!

5 out of 5 stars Sonny Meets Sonny.......2000-10-20

"The Sound of Sonny" is Sonny Rollins' first and only recording with one of my all-time favorite bop pianists, Sonny Clark. While this date was cut for Riverside (during three days in June of 1957), the lineup of Clark, either Paul Chambers or Percy Heath on bass and Roy Haynes on drums makes you think it would be a Blue Note session. In fact, Sonny was with Blue Note at this time and "The Sound of Sonny" was recorded in between "Volume 2" and "Newk's Time." Regardless of labels, this disc is a classic. Like most Sonny albums from this period, 80% of the material here is standards. However, it is a perfect blend of familiar and seldom heard standards, up-tempo grooves and touching ballads. Of particular interest here is Sonny's first unaccompanied solo recording ("It Could Happen To You"). The CD also features a bonus selection not on the original vinyl release, "Funky Hotel Blues," which along with "Cutie" are the album's only Rollins compositions. I know there a lot of classic Sonny Rollins discs from 1955-58 to choose from (it was arguably his greatest period), but "The Sound Of Sonny" ranks right up there with the best of them.

5 out of 5 stars "Mr Low" would be the ultimate understatement........2007-06-09

I really can't get enough of this guy. Each of his songs has such a classic feel to it. I've tried many times to take this CD out of my player to avoid burning it out and never wanting to listen to it again, but I just can't. It's that good.

On this album, the song that appeals to me most is Mr. Low (just personal preference). On an ordinary day of listening to Sonny's stuff, I start with Fruitvale and when I get to this track, I get stuck because I want to hear it again....and then again. Every other song on the album was flawlessly written as well.

I really don't know who to compare Sonny to because he's obviously influenced by so many. The sound itself isn't so original (though he's not an imitator in any way), but the lyrics and music is definitely rare and fresh.

By the way, I'm not from the label. I'm just a dude from Michigan that was fortunate enough to stumble upon these excellent recordings. You won't regret checking it out.

5 out of 5 stars Damn this is too good........2007-04-22

Okay jim, here it goes....

Yeah, this is on my so called label and yes this is shameless promotion. But would I lie to you? Okay then, read on. Damn this record really is too good. Sonny rocks the open G tuning like a wild eyed vigilante. That's the tuning of the people, if there ever was one. His songs cut to the center of the heart bone. Scrawling messages from the heart of the now and the then 'merica. The cadences reflect, the melody's morn, the pain, confusion, the longing that afflict us all is in there if you listen hard enough. Let him take you on a walk around the hood, you won't regret. it. Download all of Fruitvale or better yet get the CD now... che like one big bone.... chew on it hard. It will not waste your time. It will make you feel better. Oh Oh Oh mario.

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection.......2005-10-05

Sonny James if nearly forgotten, but his smooth "pop" sound mixed with traditional country music earned him a well-desserved spot in the country music honor roll. While his sound was not as true to country as say Buck, Lefty, or even Faron, he had the distinction of introducing country music to the pop charts. The recordings on this album are all original and Curb Records did a very fine job with this collection. Of course, the play list includes Sonny's famous "Young Love" and "Bright Lights, Big City". My only criticism is the live version of "It's Just a Matter of Time". A studio version which showcases Sonny's smooth delivery would have been more appropriate; but Randy Travis' cover of this song may have spoiled me.

3 out of 5 stars Hello, Fellow Sophisticates Booger and Skeeter.......2004-12-01

Well, every "good" Sonny James compilation has to have "Young Love" on it, and I have to say, I prefer his "The Minute You're Gone" over, say, Cliff Richard's (you know he's a successful singer in England, right?). How about "Take Good Care of Her", FIRST done by Adam Wade? "Bright Lights, Big City" FIRST done by bluesman Jimmy Reed? "Since I Met You Baby" FIRST done by Ivory Joe Hunter? "It's Just A Matter of Time" FIRST done by Brook Benton? Well, those last 4 are BLACK men. See, "Sonny" thought if Elvis Presley could start his career with other people's songs, notably black performers, with some country thrown in, then he ("Sonny") could do it for his WHOLE MUSICAL CAREER. If you're going to step up and sing karaoke over the radio for the folks down in Possum Trot, you want to know you can do it, don't you? Well, Sonny James could. And at this writing he's singing to the animals on the farm that you folks bought him. Hee haw!

2 out of 5 stars An Odd Mixture.......2004-12-01

Some folks are just in a bag, I guess. Today there are those who listen to nothing but hiphop or rap and apparently some people never heard of anything but country or country as represented by "Sonny James" Loden. I wonder if there are a few of you though who may have heard "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash or "Okie from Muskogee" by Merle Haggard and thought, "I'll wait until Sonny James brings out his COVER version of it". Sonny James had a good voice and delivery but rarely an individual, personally-written and -created bonafide HIT. He moved from the 60s from his cover versions to the 70s ("Tie a Yellow Ribbon") with easy aplomb. That song is on an album called "Classic County Duets" with oddball combinations of singers with no rhyme or reason. Little wonder Sonny got on the bandwagon. And for the unsophisticated, "Empty Arms" first came from Ivory Joe Hunter (NOT Teresa Brewer whose version was ALSO a cover). Sonny James' relentless pursuit of "covering" other people's hits is like someone taking a piece of sophisticated electronics deep into the African jungle and dazzling the natives with it. The product is NOT his creation; he doesn't deserve the credit. He's just a good karaoke singer. And if he could rasp out a tune today, it would be his doing somebody else's BETTER version. Thumbs down on this odd mixture of tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting selection.......2004-04-20

Sonny James had a lot of success in the sixties with his mellow pop-country music. More than anybody else, he symbolized the Nashville Sound. This is not the strongest compilation of his music available on CD but it includes some of his sixties hits not so far released elsewhere, plus one new recording.

The new recording, a duet with Karla Taylor, is a cover of Tie a yellow ribbon round the oak tree. I don't know who Karla Taylor is but she makes a good partner for Sonny on this song.

Elsewhere there is a nice mix of originals and covers. The covers include Empty arms (Teresa Brewer), Endlessly (Brook Benton), My love (Petula Clark) and Born to be with you (Chordettes).

We still await the definitive Sonny James collection but we may be a long time waiting. So until then, Sonny's fans need this one.

5 out of 5 stars Sonny James the Greatest.......2003-10-31

3 out of 5 stars Didn't Impress Everybody is Right, Petey.......2004-12-01

Nobody in music history has so shamelessly taken other people's hits and recorded them for another group of music fans, in this case country bumpkins impressed by a "southern gentleman". Why? He KNEW they were bumpkins with their minus-IQ ears glued to country music radio. He KNEW he would be credited with the delivery of the songs to those ears; it worked. The single-gaited country listeners who had never heard of The Seekers, Ivory Joe Hunter, Brook Benton, etc ate it right up and put the man into the Country Music Hall of Fame. When will there be a definitive collection of his Muzak versions of hits? Who cares?

5 out of 5 stars A good sampling of his best years.......2004-04-17

Sonny's mellow style of pop-country music did not impress everybody but he was hugely successful in his heyday, sometimes with covers of pop songs, although he also had some great original material. This was the first collection of his music released on CD and was intended to be the first of two volumes. Capitol eventually abandoned their Collectors series so the second volume was never released. This fate also befell Merle Haggard, but while Merle has been reasonably well served by CD releases, Sonny has not. There have been several compilations but they have all been single CD's. Trying to collect all Sonny's big country hits therefore remains a challenge.

This collection is presented in chronological order, beginning with Young love, the song he is best known for despite having to compete head-on with Tab Hunter's version of the same song.

Brits will be familiar with The minute you're gone, which Cliff Richard covered and took all the way to the top of the UK charts. Sonny's version is the original, but he took several pop classics to (or close to) the top of the country charts including (on this collection) I'll never find another you (Seekers), Only the lonely (Roy Orbison), It's just a matter of time (Brook Benton), My love (Petula Clark) and Only love can break a heart (Gene Pitney).

Of the original songs, Baltimore (written by Boudleaux and Felice Bryant), You're the only world I know and True love's a blessing (both co-written by Sonny James) are particularly noteworthy.

Most of these tracks have been re-issued on more recent Sonny James collections but we still await the definitive collection of his Capitol hits.

5 out of 5 stars Bear Family Outdid Themselves!.......2002-08-21

All I can say is WOW! For anyone who is a fan of Sonny James, this box set is for you!

This is indeed the most comprehensive 6-CD collection chronicling the early stages of Sonny's career as a professional recording artist. 147 tracks in all! Featured in this collection is every track Sonny recorded from his initial stint with Capitol, featuring a few recordings never before released. This collection also contains his seven tracks recorded with NRC in 1960 as well as his recordings with RCA and Dot Records. A 60-page booklet accompanies this collection, chocked full of never before seen photos of Sonny and his family, early backstage and studio photos and much more. Personal interviews with Sonny reveal his struggle to fame and the life of a young professional singer, looking to make it big someday. Once "Young Love" comes along, you'll read about the dilemma Sonny's producers are faced with concerning his target audience and the mistakes that were made following this success. Fascinating reading as you listen to his music evolve starting with the first CD to the sixth.

The first CD begins with his 1952 sessions with Capitol and producer Ken Nelson. Most of these recordings have the typical country music style from this era. A young Sonny James is establishing himself among his peers, however his own style doesn't seem to show up here. You might pick up a hint of Hank Williams style in some of these tracks.

The second CD has a sudden burst of Sonny James! His style that we've grown to love over the years is very dominant on this collection of recordings that chronicle his career from 1955-56. All of the tracks on Sonny's first LP "Southern Gentleman" are featured on this disc. You'll love his guitar and his wonderful delivery of vocals. These sessions truly show Sonny at his best.

The third CD starts off with "Young Love", Sonny's biggest selling single and most popular. His "country" sound seems to have been toned down a bit and changed to a more universally accepted "country-pop". The tracks from Sonny's second LP "Sonny" are featured on this disc. Sonny's unique style is present on a few of these recordings. Obviously, record producers are very influential during this period, attempting to sway Sonny away from his core country audience.

The fourth CD contains many of Sonny's tracks that attempt to appeal to a younger audience. These recordings have the typical late fifties rock & roll flavor and are no doubt enjoyable, however they're quite a departure from Sonny's country style. You'll pick up the styles of Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers and Rick Nelson among these recordings. Sonny's unique style is absent on this disc until you hear "You Don't Hurt Me Anymore" & "Love Me Like I Am", both tracks truly Sonny! The tracks of Sonny's third LP "Honey" are featured on this disc. This particular LP was recorded in 1958 in an attempt to place Sonny in competition with the popular artist of the day. This LP wasn't country, it wasn't rock & roll, it was pop! This LP was a collection of tracks with a soft-singing Sonny without his guitar with what sounded like "jingle singers" in the background. This was very "un-Sonny". I've personally dubbed it Sonny's "lounge singer" LP. This LP was apparently a sore spot with producer Ken Nelson as well. When you listen, you'll understand why.

The fifth CD features a variety of Sonny's sessions with Capitol in 1959. His swung from rock & roll to country and then to pop. All genres were represented on these tracks. Further into the CD, you'll notice the quality of sound deteriorate when Sonny leaves Capitol in 1959 and cuts seven tracks with NRC in 1960. My favorite NRC recording is "Passing Through", an up-tempo tune that could have done well on it's own, but it was featured as the "B" side the "Jenny Lou" single, which did moderately well on Billboards country charts. Toward the end of this CD are some of the RCA sessions, with Sonny working with friend and producer Chet Atkins.

The sixth CD rounds up the remaining RCA sessions and covers all of the Dot recordings, most of which were featured on an LP in 1962. The two exceptions are "The Longest Day" and "The Only Cure", which was Sonny's last single before returning to Capitol Records in 1963. "The Only Cure" sounded as if it should have been on a much later Sonny James LP!

In conclusion, I think that Bear Family did an astounding job in putting together this boxed set. They've immortalized Sonny James by preserving his recordings and photographs for future generations to enjoy.

Thanks Bear Family!

Two best selling 70's country music albums on 1 CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bring Sonny's Material Back in Print, Capitol and Columbia.......2003-09-06

Finally, Finally, some of Sonny James's albums are coming back in print, long overdue for this country great. The record labels have all but forgot about Sonny in fact with the exception of this 2 fer I had to go to Nashville Tenn. to even find Sonny James material and from West Virginia that is quite a distance. Was the 60's and 70's so long ago or is Sonny's material just being ignored. If I remember right this Country legend had a string of 21 number one hits but yet for years and years his material was out of Print. These two 70's albums released on one CD shows how well Sonny can cover some of the all-time great tunes from yesteryear, treated with the upmost respect and care from Sonny. Sonny makes these songs his own in a style that has made Sonny himself a Legend, The Southern Gentlemen at his best!!!!!
