Fantastic Soundtrack.......2004-03-22

It may be hard to track this one down, but it's entirely worth every penny. The music to this soundtrack is so beautiful, I know very little French, but it doesn't matter.

This is also one of my favorite Films as well. If you haven't seen the film, rent it. There's nothing like it, it's beyond fantastic.

This sountrack is simply beyond review. I first knew about it when one of my friends brought the DVD of the movie to the company.And then it was like magic: "I just have to get this soundtrack anyhow!!" I would suggest that it's better to get the DVD first. Knowing the movie will eventually help you to appreciate the sondtrack more coz it's more influential together with the story. I guess not many people know about this movie in my country and I'm grat that my friend helped me discovered this WONDERFUL CD.

This movie and soundtrack are beyond reviews! There is nothing to say except ... beautiful. I have listened to this CD of the complete movie soundtrack countless times and still find myself amazed by it. The music is the ultimate of Legrand's sweet, searching, yet loungey jazz, with occasional tango and big band style diversions. The movie, while beautiful to look at, is a very simple story in its essence. This soundtrack is what makes people sit through it over and over again. (No disrespect meant to the excellent cast and the incomparable debut of Mlle Deneuve!) The singing voices are as refreshing as cool water and the French comes through with exquisite clarity.

"Les Parapluies..." -- a modern masterpiece.......2001-08-29

The movie "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" is beautiful, tender, and alive with vivid color; this complete soundtrack recording is no different. From the breathy tones of the opening flute solo all the way through to the stirring finale, evey nuance and texture of Michel Legrand's very colorful score is captured perfectly on this recording. If you're unfamiliar with the music from this movie, you may be surprised to discover a number of familiar melodies -- songs that have worked their way into today's jazz and adult contemporary music repetoire (most natoably "Watch What Happens" and "I Will Wait For You"). For me, the real treasure of this recording is the attention the engineers paid to capturing the cast members' singing voices. The French language comes across crystal-clear. And even if you don't speak or understand the language, the passion within each voice -- the rainbow of emotions given forth from the singers, matched perfectly with the sweeping score -- allows the listener to understand the emotinal gyst of what each character is expressing at that moment. And speaking of the cast -- simply amazing. My favorite moment (I can't accurately express why) is when Guy comes home to his aunt's apartment and he runs into her caretaker, Madeline. When they greet each other ("Bon soir Guy", "Bon soir Madeline"), there is such a "tender tension", an unspoken adoration, I practically melt each time.
What really makes this recording the ultimate for "Umbrellas" fans are the six bonus tracks. They are perfect examples of how this beautiful music is being re-interpreted into the jazz scene. Tony Bennett does a terrific turn with "Watch What Happens", and Michel Legrand himself takes to the piano and delivers an amazing 8-minute variation on "I Will Wait For You" -- you have to hear it to believe it!
And, by the way, if you don't have the video already in your collection, I would suggest purchasing it at the same time you're buying this CD. The movie has been restored to it's bright, vivid original color -- eye-popping!

The complete score to Jacques Demy's one-of-a-kind musical is here, and with bonus tracks, adding up to some 115 minutes of material. While not all of Michel Legrand's music is as memorable as the haunting main theme, the pieces which range from playful to mournful are uniformly beautiful and spiced up considerably by Demy's dialogue/lyrics, always sung rather than spoken.

Is it surprising that a master of German art song would produce a jazz album? Not if he's Thomas Quasthoff, who has sung jazz since his university days and maintains an infectious enthusiasm for it. From breezily light baritone to sexy bass (he rumbles very comfortably around low F), Quasthoff totally adapts his sound to the music's needs, confidently attacking certain notes "white" before adding vibrato. The American "r" - so difficult for foreign artists - does draw undue attention, as do certain vowel sounds, but otherwise Quasthoff's delivery of English is convincing. He sings much of the music comparatively "straight" (one frequently wishes he'd indulge in some really off-the-wall improvisation), but he definitely knows his way around this material. Highlights are a cool "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," a jaunty "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive," and especially haunting versions of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" and Duke Ellington's "In My Solitude." Very enjoyable, too, is the growling conclusion of Stevie Wonder's "You and I." Quasthoff is supported by a strong ensemble, including Germany's most gifted jazz trumpeter, Till Brönner, and the excellent pianist Alan Broadbent. The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchestra, however, brings an unwelcome "101 Strings""flavor to six numbers. --Roger Pines

Wallowing in the worst register of his voice..........2007-06-06

Thomas Quasthoff must have reached a certain benchmark in sales at Deutsche Grammophon to be allowed this indulgence, another unnecessary crossover CD from a media-feted classical singer.

Oy, but a great classical singer he's not. And he's even a worse jazz singer. As this collection shows, he has listened to his Ella Fitzgerald records faithfully enough to imitate her breathy, conversational delivery in the middle register, while lacking her innate sense of coloring and rubato. His is a dull, foursquare delivery, which he consciously tries to loosen by issuing a pathetic growl now and then to prove he's gettin' down. And just the SOUND of his voice, its timbre, in this conversational register is patently unpleasant. As mentioned above, his overcompensation with r's and with certain vowels makes his delivery even more studied and stilted.

However, when he soars above the staff, as he does in "You and I," his voice gains considerably in power and beauty. This happens all too infrequently, unfortunately.

The song program contains some real clunkers, such as "Secret Love," "There's a Boat That's Leavin' Soon for New York," and the execrable "My Funny Valentine." Just compare Thom's "What are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" to Barbra's (from the "Way We Were" album) to see how straight and uninspired our German friend's rendition is. "In My Solitude" is almost unlistenable.

To this CD's credit, I must compliment the luscious, clear sound of the recording and the judiciously crafted orchestral arrangements. Ultimately, though, this is just another one of those vocal crossover albums that will end up in the cut-out bins with scores of others already gathering dust.

Quasthoff proves with this CD that he is a true musician and separates the two different ways of singing very well.

Being a great admirer of T. Quasthoff in his classical performance and a jazz lover, I didn't hesitate to order this cd. Moreover, the jazz impro bonus on The Voice let me think that Mr Quasthoff's voice could match perfectly the jazz style. The result is beyond the expectations. Mr Quasthoff sings these jazz standards as if he had done that all his life long, and the result is astonishing. It is even further enhanced by the great recording! So, order this CD without hesitation....

Not jazz.......2007-03-11

Quasthoff has a phenomenal voice, but he should keep his day job. He is not a jazz singer. Although this may be some German idea of jazz, it isn't jazz, and the musicians do not seem to understand jazz at all. The songs are not sung or played like jazz, and many of the songs are nowhere near jazz at all. If "Secret Love" is jazz, Doris Day must be Billie Holiday in disguise. This is a novelty piece, but one listening is a gracious plenty; I stopped sooner.

Thomas Quasthoff shines once again, & sounds just like a Rat-Packer!.......2007-02-23

I have most of the superb Thomas Quasthoff's albums, and am always interested in hearing him do different music. Singing these jazz numbers, he sounds just like a member of the Rat Pack! He always sings authentically, and always with great originality. In this jazz album, Mr. Quasthoff sings with no trace of a German accent, and he captures the style and razzle-dazzle of these songs. The liner notes indicate that these songs were selected to form a song cycle of the artist's own emotional experiences.

My favorites are the Stevie Wonder song "You and I" and "They All Laughed." Other composers featured are George Gershwin, Michel Legrand, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, and others. There is a mix of the upbeat and humorous (Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive, Can't We Be Friends, They All Laughed), and the more reflective and serious (Smile, In My Solitude).

There is quite a bit of artistry involved in the interpretations here. For example, in Duke Ellington's "In my Solitude," there is disturbing and eerie quality, particularly in the instrumental section following the line "I know that I'll soon go mad." Special mention must be made of the outstanding instrumental contributions, the excellent Till Bronner on trumpet and Alan Broadbent on piano, as well as the back up orchestra, which is essential to the interpretations (such as in the Duke Ellington, mentioned above).

This entire album is masterfully sung by Mr. Quasthoff in his own unique style. I highly recommend this album, as I do all his other albums. I only wish that Thomas Quasthoff would begin recording albums of all his current concerts, such as Brahm's Die Schone Magelone, and Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. Much of the public, myself included, can never get enough of this voice and more albums.

If the American pop culture profile of French composer-jazz pianist Michel Legrand doesn't seem what it once was, don't be misled: his European indie film scores continue six decades on, now numbering nearly 200. But Legrand's most beloved work remains the lovely, evocative themes he created in the '60s and '70s, including "I Will Wait for You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair's "Windmills of Your Mind," the theme from Summer of '42, and his work on Barbra Streisand's Yentl. Bill Evans once said that technique in jazz "is the ability to translate your ideas into sound through your instrument." If that's the case, Legrand possesses technique in spades.

Before commenting on this rewarding disc, a few words about Legrand himself:

Is there a better songwriter or a more versatile all-around musican alive today? I think you have to go back to people like Gershwin and Billy Strayhorn to find a rough parallel to Legrand's multifaceted, genre-crossing genius. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger (who studied with Faure and taught many important American composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass), Legrand is an heir of the great French tradition of music--but one who has chosen to express himself through popular songs, film scores, and jazz. He possesses that rare combination of an absolutely rigorous theoretical knowledge of music and an intuitive, spontaneous instinct for both melody and improvisation. He combines exquisite refinement with a popular touch, a need to communicate directly with all who love music. To me, his work represents the most perfect expression of such typically French traits as lightness, insouciance, wit, melodic charm, and direct emotional expression since Poulenc.

Here you'll find many of Legrand's signature songs--"I Will Wait for You," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," "The Hands of Time," "You Must Believe in Spring," etc.--reharmonized and enriched in stunningly beautiful solo recreations. Those unfamiliar with Legrand's pianistic abilities will probably be surprised by what they hear, for he's no part-time piano tickler. He can easily hold his own in the company of the best modern jazz pianists. He has a wonderfully refined touch that is incapable of making a harsh sound and a profusive sense of fantasy that keeps you constantly guessing as to where the music will go next. Yet you always feel satisfied when you find out, because Legrand possesses a composer's comprehension of harmony and form. And his own style is in no way compromised by an occasional nod here and there toward Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, Rachmaninoff, and so on. (Please: disregard the Amazon reviewer's remark about "flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody." It's called a stride chorus, and it's just one example of Legrand's surprising way of recasting these songs--and of his encyclopedic command of jazz styles.)

This disc represents the essence of Legrand. It really should have been recorded a long time ago, but the fact that it has captured his undiminished abilities as he enters his twilight years lends it an added poignance--a sense of "just in time!"--that makes it all the sweeter. If you're already a Legrand fan, it should be a self-recommending treasure, and if you're a fan of great piano playing or of sophisticated jazz treatments of great songs, odds are you'll find this a very rewarding disc indeed. For me, the highlight is this version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" in which every note seems inevitable--not at all an easy thing to make happen in an improvisation.

Miles Davis once said of a Duke Ellington recording, "Give that one all the stars you've got." That's the way I feel about this disc, and I thought that phrase "all the stars you've got" was appropriate because it almost sounds like the title of a Legrand song.

Legrand has recorded at last one of his more intimate renditions to himself with his most remarkable themes along his brilliant career .
From a summer of 42 , The windmills of your mind (The Thomas crown afair) , what are you doing the rest of your life or the romantic Umbrellas of Cherbourg ; all those unforgettable themes are played in this album for piano solo in the real intimacy between him and the listener .
Legrand is the golden master of soundtracks in France and one of the top in the world . He owns that inner vision to catch the spirit of every movie he accompains . He composes music as he was a real director movie . The psychological concerns , the romantic efluvies and the precise and lyrical atmosphere , with that touch of class, artistic elegance and sublime eloquency .
Think also in the important recordings with Miles Davis . That issue will give you the size of that artist and anothe point to remark . In 1954 , Legrand made a golden jewel : I lvoe Paris (See my review) that has become through the years in the most famous and the best album of instrumental music ever recorded .

graceful tones and notes, that create memories of a certain
time and place in each of our own lives.
When accompaned with great orchestration Its wonderful. When done in a jazz piano style, its not as good. Not to take anyting away from the talents of Mr Legrand as a pianist. Its just that like hearing a lusher, grander version of his music. So if you like jazz piano music, and Michele Legrand.
Then this is the cd for you!

You must buy this CD. While visiting Arizona recently, I heard a song from this CD on the radio. I figured the singer was some famous person, and then I heard the DJ say it was from an "upcoming star". Well he was right. This woman can sing! All of the songs put you in a calm, relaxing, and "feel good" state of mind. In short, Sherry Petta's music is magical! I highly recommend it.

Le Grand Legend.......2001-10-03

Legendary musician, pianist and composer Michel Legrand brings an incredible depth of understanding, feeling and passion to the production of this great CD. The intensity of Laura's brilliant performance is beautifully countered by the soft lyrical playing of Michel on piano. Laura manages to capture the magic moment romantically. As the title suggest, we are given a taste of all the different collaborations Michel went through in his exceptional career as a pianist, generating very different moods. This CD is not only a collection of great compositions of Michel, like, 'The summer knows', 'The windmills of your mind', and 'Ask yourself why' but is also a testimony to the abundant talent of Laura in her unique interpretation of 'The first time', 'You had to be there' and of course 'Rachel' - A splendid composition written by Michel especially for Laura. BIG in every sense of the work this must count amongst Laura's finest work. A gem of a CD.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE??.......2001-03-07

It usually takes several listening sessions for me to establish a liking for an lesser known singer, but once I realized Legrand did the arranging, I figured this CD has to be top notch and classy! Where has this singer been?? Her singing is superb and soothing -- just perfect for that candlelight dinner or that snuggle-up-to-me type moment. Legrand never ceases to amaze, and his earlier works with Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson (live!), and Stephan Grappelli are knockout performances. All song arrangements here are lush and dreamy...nothing "torchy" here. The best "mood" disc to come around in a long time - just amazed that it took me 4 years after its release to discover it.

Laura sure has a sweet voice and more.......2000-12-17

This will be the first Laura Fygi cd for me to buy. I pretty much knew what to expet from her, because I had heard her songs played on the radio a lot. Lauras' voice has sure been everything I had hoped for.

L.F. has a very pleasent and smooth voice. I never seems to loose it balance and texture. I guess you could say that she has the voice of an ANGEL. It is one that will please most music fans.

The only draw back to this cd was the song selection. She sang Michel Legrand songs which I thought was ok, but I never felt like he had that many hits that I truley liked. As far a Lauras' voice goes it is definately a "ten".

Recommendation: I think this will be a cd that you can enjoy.

Wonderful Brazilian music !!.......2000-10-27

As a Brazilian I love this CD because Laura Fygi give us a wonderful collection of Brazilian music. Her portuguese is perfect. I don't know how she can sing the lirics in Portuguese with no accent!! Corcovado, Dindi, Triste, If you went away, How insensitive,Oh telephone are a small sample of our songs and Laura Fygi has a special way to sing it. and her portuguese interpretation for "All of me" is fabulous. It CD deserve five stars.

Rediscover your Legrand.......1999-11-23

The velvet voice of L. Fygi, so human and so exact and academic the same time, and light jazzeous moods of Legrans' himself arrangements make these compilation the best chrestomatic of Michelle Legrand's songs. When you listen to these very familiar songs some of wich were sung by famous B. Steisand et al, you discover new layers of these creations thanks to enourmous artistic talant of Fygi.

This is my favorite by Lena!!Fabuous songs and arrangements!I have own this in LP, casette, and two CD's and never had I got tired of this. I am always looking for a remastered version of this extraordinary CD!!I have followed it around for 30 years and wait patiently for the remastered to hit the limited market.
