didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22
I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.
Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20
If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.
Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.
It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22
My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.
"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.
All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!
a lost gem.......2004-10-14
i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.
Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19
BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

VERY NICE FIND. FUNK or JAZZ you decide........2003-03-20
This is one of the funkiest albums I ever heard. I own a battery of jazz albums and funk albums, Black Talk is one of the greatest unsung cross overs. Easily one of my favorites.
High School 1969.......2000-05-24
I remember when I was in high school ...twelth grade. My mother and I agreed on nothing but this album as they were called back then. It was the only album I could blast full volume and she would groove to the music with me. She's gone now but I tell you what... everytime I play this cd I think of her. God bless Charles Earland for bringing her and I together on common ground...a funky jazz organ player.
Funk and Jazz Collide..and They Both Win.......2000-04-01
OK, so I backed into this CD (thanks, Fritz the Cat), but hey, better late than never. Some excellent playing all around - great ensemble work by all concerned. The only down bit is "Aquarius", which on occasion sounds a bit too Holiday Inn for me. Any ill will is erased by "More Today Than Yesterday", which is one of the few songs over 11 minutes that you'll wish was longer. If you're jazz and want to try funk, or if you're funk and want to try jazz, you could do a lot worse than this CD.
Funky&a Classic.......2000-02-21
WOW! this disc is Blazing hot to this day.his ORGAN style of playing ain't no joke.this is a classic disc.it sounds fresher now than it did back when it came out.it's Funky,Bluesy&alot of Bangin'Groove.between him Jimmy Smith,Jimmy McGriff,&Lonnie Listen SMith you get Genius.Charles Earland went one step ahead with this Gem.
THE MIGHTY BURNER IS A FUNKY SOUL JAZZ CLASSIC !.......1999-12-04
This is an incredible album, not because of Earland's genius as a soloist, but because of his distinct ability to BURN... While many of his contemporaries were still stuck in the '50s with that grindy Jimmy Smith sound.... Earland forged ahead with an equally earthy, but more "dance floor" appropriate sound... built from the funky Jimmy McGriff school, but going far beyond mere blues. - - His sweat inducing energetic version of MORE TODAY THAN YESTERDAY is now a Jazz organ staple (as well as staple of his live performances) - - Songs from this album also appear on the soundtrack to Fritz the Cat - - Everything on the album is funky.. the type that club DJs love to get their hands on and sample - - This is one album that I'd have to reccomend not only to Jazzers, but folks into Greyboy All Stars, Albert Collins, MMW, Funk Inc. even the Meters (only this is the REAL thing - - you'll see what I mean when you get it.) - - If you like this, I suggest checking out LEON SPENCER (Greatest Hits), a bit of REUBEN WILSON, and JOHN PATTON's MINOR SWING.

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

I have listened to this CD over and over and not tired of it yet. Frances Black's voice is as beautiful as her sister Mary's and the choice of songs is impeccable. "All The Lies That You Told Me" and "On Grafton Street" are my favorites, but all the songs are great.
My husband's favorite.......2000-08-05

Facade - a unique experience!.......2007-04-03
Walton (and Sitwell's) Facade is a delightful entertainment and nowhere better than here with all the extra poems that Walton set.
If you have never heard the piece before - it takes a little effort - but that is well worth the time.
The settings are witty and apposite. Stilgoe and Bron are the perfect pair to recite - I suspect few of the listeners in the US will have heard of them - except Stilgoe has written lyrics for Lloyd Webber.
I encourage you to try this CD - I am sure you will enjoy it.

RED HOT MAMA.......2002-02-08
From the school of Butterfield, Mayal and Upchurch, this artist - Anson Funderburgh - provided the roots for others that followed. Guitarists like Steve Ray Vaughn and Santana have borrowed heavily from Anson. Check out Red Hot Mama on the album and you will see what I mean.
This Album, issued in 1981 is a must have for the serious collector....
