5 out of 5 stars Stupendous Jazz Masterpieces.......2007-07-03

"Music is an emotion. It is directly from the person: body, mind and soul. You're trying to make the instrument say what you want it to say." ~ Oscar Peterson ~

Oscar Peterson, who turns 82 this August, has about eight Grammys to add to his impressive credentials not to mention several Hall of Fame awards. He is the very first jazz musician to receive the most-coveted and prestigious international award "Glen Gould Prize" given for extraordinary contribution to music. And not long ago, his country of origin, Canada, honored him for a Distinguish Canadian Leadership Award. Likewise, Canada Post has commemorated his life and achievements with a 50-cent stamp on his 80th birthday in 2005 making him the first living artist to be honored as such.

This CD is one of the greatest collections of his masterpieces recorded between 1964 and 1966 showcasing his genius in piano playing. On the concise Liner Notes, James Isaacs dubbed him an "heir to Art Tatum's mantle as jazz's virtuoso pianist." From one of the magazine articles I have read, he once told an interviewer that "Art Tatum could play faster than anybody at 12,000 notes a minute, and he didn't even have to think about it. He'd be running along the keys with one hand while taking a drink with the other. But what notes did he choose? Those notes, in that sequence, that was his genius."

As always, his albums which include Oscar Peterson Plays The George Gershwin Songbook, A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra, Encore at the Blue Note, We Get Requests and Plays the Harold Arlen Song Book have an enormous impact to the listening ears of jazz lovers and this collection, "Compact Jazz: Oscar Peterson" is also a testament. Supported by his long-time collaborators Ray Brown and Sam Jones (bass), Ed Thigpen and Louis Hayes (drums), Clark Terry (trumpet) and Herb Ellis (guitar), Oscar Peterson offers eleven of his most remarkably beautiful recordings of all-time. My highlights include ingenious interpretations of "Let's Fall In Love," "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Autumn Leaves," "Stella By Starlight" and "Misty."

Likewise, he has the special ability to turn his original compositions into something wonderful with his exceptional piano artistry, which is synonymous to great jazz music. This is especially true with "Roundalay" and "Wheatland." So give this CD a listen and experience the majestic sounds from a living legend of jazz piano, Oscar Peterson.

Wholeheartedly recommended for your listening enjoyment now and forever!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sampling of Oscar Peterson at his best.......2007-01-26

This is the sort of bargain-basement compendium I usually avoid, but boy am I glad I got this. This is Oscar Peterson at the height of his powers from the 1964-1966 period, with a well-sequenced selection of some his best recordings. Tracks 3 and 7 include Clark Terry on trumpet, while the rest are from trios Oscar recorded with during this period. Oscar's dazzling technique is on full display in every number, and each tune offers numerous pleasures.

Buyers enjoy this great CD but careful of sellers offering a "free" upgrade to 1st Class shipping. If you select media mail shipping, and the Seller ships 1st Class, the seller is pocketing your shipping dollars. For your upgrade to be free, the seller must refund the difference betwen shipping a CD media mail vs. 1st Class!! Buyers please do not fall for this deceiving sale technique.

Peterson has been a consummate interpreter of standards from the outset of his career, a talent extensively documented in his Verve Songbook recordings, but his talents shine in a special light on this 1962 recording of Leonard Bernstein songs from West Side Story. Part of the surprise comes from Peterson's playing with expectations, propelling Bernstein's art ballads with potent dance rhythms or adding rhapsodic breadth to dance numbers. Bernstein's harmonies provide plenty of fuel for Peterson's improvisations, while bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen complement the pianist with their usual balance of poise and power. With a thoughtful approach taken to each of the musical's themes, this is among the most accomplished--and coherent--jazz adaptations ever undertaken of a Broadway score. --Stuart Broomer

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic trio!.......2006-06-26

one of the very best trio albums of all time! these musicians were joined with some of the greatest & most difficult music to play, & they nailed it! highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Played it for months..........2005-12-28

and nearly everyone in the workplace mourned the day I took it off the cd changer. It resonates with a lyrical beauty and sadness rarely accomplished in jazz. It touched one who sat in the voice room, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing...one of the all time best CDs.......2005-06-12

I already love the soundtrack to West Side Story, and the thought of redoing it never even crossed my mind. Then I saw Oscar Peterson in concert in Oakland, CA at Yoshis and being caught up in the moment after the show I bought this CD. It is simply one of the greatest CDs of all time. Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Ed Thigpen bring new life to a soundtrack that didn't even need "new life," but it is simply amazing. If you like jazz at all and/or like West Side Story this is a MUST buy. Oscar Peterson does not let down and brushes those keys with such feeling that it will take you aback. He is truly one of the last living "greats" and everyone needs to buy this CD. Like a previous review said...the only negative about this album is that America was not included but that's alright. Even if you're not into jazz, after listening to this...you just might be.

    5 out of 5 stars I would give it 6 stars.......2004-09-19

I would give it 6 stars if the missing song 'america' was there. The essence of Bernstein music is captured nicely here by Peterson's transcription. But the trio appropriates it, and really makes it its own: it does sound like the tunes are the standardest of the jazz standards. I had my friend listen to it, who does not like jazz too much ('only with lyrics', he claims). He feared the worst, like another kenny g-ish/musak version for the hotel elevator, and he kept back absolutely enchanted.
The cd is very short, and I really do wish they could unearth a few more songs, especially of 'i want to be in America'.

    5 out of 5 stars great jazz/ musical crossover.......2002-02-01

Oscar Peterson has found the perfect balance between staying true to the leonard bernstein soundtrack and jazz improv... its heaven and I could listen to it for hours on end...

I was stuck at the warped tour, a punk rock concert, in traffic when a group of kids asked me if I had any classical music...all I had was this, so I gave it to them, and those punks loved it.
