This 1960 record solidified Montgomery's reputation as the most important jazz guitarist to emerge since Charlie Christian in the 1930s. His two most-distinguishing traits---the mellow thumb-picking approach and the soft and round use of octaves--are in full bloom here. Montgomery tackles two standards, one tune each from Sonny Rollins and Dave Brubeck, plus four originals, including the classics "West Coast Blues" and "Four on Six." His solos are remarkably fluid and melodic while still capturing the essence of the blues idiom. He achieves a near-perfect balance of technique and emotion. On "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," his approach is unhurried and delicate; on the original "Mr. Walker," he produces lengthy, bop-inspired runs without ever losing control. Tommy Flanagan's gracefully understated piano proves a perfect match. Rather than compete with horn players and their styles, Montgomery relished the distinct and unique qualities of the guitar. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star - No Brainer! .......2007-06-26

I challenge people to turn off the lights, pop this one on, lay down on your bed and really focus and concentrate on that guitar playing of Mr. Montgomery. You will be mesmerized. For it's beyond amazing! This is one recording a jazz guitar player doesn't want to miss. However, any fan of the guitar, no matter what your favorite category of music may be, will still thoroughly enjoy listening to this legend. The man was arguably the greatest jazz guitarist ever. He is my personal favorite among many favorites (i.e. Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, et al... et al...). Out of all of the many great Wes Montgomery recordings I would put this one, along with "Smokin' at the Half Note", as my all-time most revered.

As Ralph J. Gleason, a very highly respected jazz writer, was quoted as saying in the original liner notes: "He (Montgomery) has the electric quality, that special gift of making whatever he does come alive, that marks the true artist. He has terrific swing, the ability to build solos dramatically (and) beautifully climax after climax, and everything he plays has a sense of rightness about it."

And what really makes this one even extra special is the trio behind Wes, backing him up are - Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and his brother Albert Heath on drums. The swinging trio plays loose and always in perfect flow, each one of them turning in terrific performances. This is a definite must own for every fan of jazz out there. As you can see, the Amazon reviewers have spoken (as of today, this will be review #43) and it is rightfully holding a five-star status. I can't believe anyone would give this less.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Wes Montgomery fans.......2007-05-12

This was my first Wes Montgomery CD, I listened to it for years, it was then stolen from me, but I still remember the sounds on the recording now. I will definitely but the tracks again. This CD shows what Wes Montgomery is all about, all the different elements in his playing are showcased and each track is enjoyable and intriging to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Wes: Great player and composer.......2006-12-31

Wes Montgomery is the father of modern jazz guitar. His style sounds fresh today. But, he also composed some incredibly catchy tunes in this hard-bop style. "D-Natural Blues", "Mr. Walker", "West Coast Blues", and my favorite "Four-on-Six",have all become standards and are played here with elegance, logic and a tremendous sense of swing. You'll never tire of this great music.

5 out of 5 stars So Sweet.......2006-11-05

Reminds me of those late, after-hour joints in Chicago when I was living a happy, smokey jazz lush life in that great city. It's three in the morning, the music jumps, every foot is tapping to his sweet, solid sound and I'm young again. And what a great time Wes and his fellows are having -- Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath bass and Albert Heath on drums. A perfect mix of exceptional talent and chemistry. For you newcomers, pay attention -- this is music!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Wes.......2006-10-28

Years ago I had read in a jazz magazine how some top jazz guitarists were influenced by this album, so wanting to find out more about Wes I bought it. This was also my first Wes album(CD), and I was blown away!
All I had heard before was some of his more "pop styled"songs. I started buying a lot of him, but I still don't think there's a better one. Every song is great, the band is great, and I like the sound of his guitar better than a lot of his others. This is got to be in the top ten of all guitar records! In my opinion, an essential jazz recording.

5 out of 5 stars Wes Wes Wes !!!.......2006-06-24

With one plucked note from that thumb you know instantly that it is Wes!
This is the record that I tell anyone into Jazz, guitar or just plain music, that they have to listen to.

A great group, Tommy Flanagan and the Heath brother. This album shines!
Wes was total working class, cared more for family then his music. This is a testament to a true guitar great!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2002-01-20

This CD just gets better each time I hear it! Great jazz guitar at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars Wes in K2.......2000-09-18

This is a classic Wes Montgomery album. Not as slick and polished as later efforts but more soul and feeling. Great combo assembled here for a guitar oriented outting. This disc has been remastered from the original tapes using the JVC K2 Super Coding process. The process works to the extent that on a couple of tracks, you forget you are listening to a recording. Wes is in the room with you grooving on that hollow body guitar. There are better Wes Montgomery albums but none have better sound (yet) than this one.

Album Description

Incredible young fiddler roams through musical genres, from Scottish, Irish & Cape Breton to newgrass, funk, jazz and contemporary classical, in an amazing and cohesive hour of music. With John Behling on guitar, Glenn Brady on acoustic bass, Tyler Duncan on bodhran and Irena Portenko on piano. 57 minutes.

"Jeremy Kittel has already established himself as a world class fiddler." -Sing Out!

"Jeremy is just too damn young to play as well as he does." -Fiddler Magazine

"Keep an eye on this young man; he is truly something special." -David Balakrishnan, Turtle Island String Quartet

"The young Ann Arbor fiddler lit things up at last week's Detroit Music Awards, showing off the technically proficient but soulful Celtic folk that has already earned him a heap of honors -- including the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Junior Championship. We'd call him a rising star, but he's clearly already risen." -Detroit Free Press

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Moving Music.......2005-03-21

I have now seen Jeremy Kittel perform live 4 times. 3 times at the local highland games and last night performing with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. If you have the chance to see him live, I would highly recommend it. The music is moving. It is hard to listen to this music without tapping your feet and/or pounding on the table.
If you can't see him live, buy his albums they are a treat.

I give this album 4 stars because it isn't as good as his first album. However, it is still excellent. Well worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding musical skill.......2005-01-02

I bought this CD at a concert after hearing Jeremy and his group play the music featured on this disk. I was, in a word, dumbstruck. Here's a lad still in college who is writing and performing contemporary celtic (and jazz) arrangments of the sort done by bands like DeDannon or The Tannahill Weavers or Barde- arrangements of stunning harmonic and rhyhmic complexity, with performance skills to match. His arrangment of Chick Corea's "Spain" is simply a stunner.

Forget his age. Kittler plays with the skill, sensitivity and fire of the best Celic and jazz fiddlers out there. Buy both his CDs now, and in ten years you'll be able to brag you discovered him when he was a mere lad. And if you have an opportunity to hear him play live, run, do not walk, to buy your tickets before everyone discoveres how incredible he is. Six stars.

5 out of 5 stars Playing with great balance.......2004-09-17

I had the luck of hearing this young man play at a local Celtic festival several years ago, and he certainly knows what he's doing. I'm a former violinist (an injury stopped that), and I struggled with the balance between mechanically correct and being expressive. Kittel does not struggle with this; he just does both very, very well. The songs on this CD were mixed in amongst the traditional Celtic ones I heard that day, and they were a joy to listen to. No worries, here, lads and lasses.

5 out of 5 stars I am so impressed!.......2004-05-14

I teach violin and fiddle. I have never heard a fiddle recording with such rich, full tone in the ornamentation as this. The rolls are awesome. The variety of styles is breathtaking. Jeremy writes great tunes! I look forward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2003-07-10

There are a lot of fiddle recordings out there, and there are a lot of jazz recordings out there, and there are also a lot of classical recordings out there. But rarely do you hear so many influences being drawn upon by one artist on one recording. This CD by Jeremy Kittel is unique (and great) because not only does he play surperbly in the Scottish style, but he can play in a wide variety of other styles as well and still create a cohesive album. This CD has just about everything I've always wanted to hear in a fiddle recording. In addition to showcasing a number of wonderfully played Scottish tunes, it boasts such treats as Blackberry Blossom (which is familiar to many and often played) paired with the big-band favorite Sing Sing Sing. Not what you would expect on most Celtic recordings. It's full of unexpected tunes that pull from all kinds of musical genres, from Celtic to bluegrass to jazz to classical, and thus has something for everyone. This CD is great, and everyone should buy it. Right now.

This outstanding 20 bit remastered release features the extremely rare recording of Wes Montgomery, live at the Half Note in New York, and in Hamburg. One of the greatest improvisers in jazz, Wes stretches out on these two spectacular live recordings. In the New York concert, Wes joins forces with the brilliant pianist Harold Mabern, whose post-bop concept and swinging feel are a perfect complement to his own ingenious playing, while in the Hamburg concert, Montgomery teams up with French piano phenomenon Martial Solal. Definitive Records. 2003.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Incredibly different from the original masterpiece.......2006-10-28

The original "Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" is a studio LP issued by Riverside in 1960. This recording is widely - and rightly - regarded as one of this guitarist's crowning achievements. OJC and JVC Victor have reissued it.
It should be pointed out to potential buyers that the CD under review is NOT THE ORIGINAL CD.

This CD collects two different live recordings sessions.

The first four tracks are taken from a February 1965 New York concert originally issued as "Stretchin' Out Live" and consists of "private recordings and rarities".
The musicians, including pianist Harold Mabern, would also later back Montgomery on French broadcast recordings.

The last four tracks are part of the recordings first issued by Philology as "Live in Europe". The pianist here is Martial Solal whilst tenorist Johnny Griffin is featured on "Blue Monk".

Although Wes Montgomery plays well, the musicians who accompany him do no really shine. Besides, the recording - while reasonable - sounds very flat with the rhythm section barely audible.

This CD is artistically not bad but it is aimed at completists. The sound is not state of the art. Someone who wishes an introduction to the genius of Wes Montgomery would be much better off with "big label" releases, such as the ORIGINAL "Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery".
