Raw Soul.......2007-05-07

It doesn't get much better than Bill Withers when it comes to pure earthy soul. He keeps everything simple and to the point. His voice doesn't flow with perfect pitch and control, but lays it all out on the table with pure emotion much like Otis Redding. Everyone has heard his songs, but barely anyone knows his name. Get to know Bill Withers and you will be glad you did.

2 Great Albums Now On CD.......2004-01-19

Although Legacy reissued 1972's Still Bill in 2003, they never got around to Withers first album from 1971. This Australian label does an excellent job of giving you 2 for the price of 1. The liner notes are excellent and the sound is top-notch. If you're new to Withers and want something other than his Best of's, then this is the next best thing. Also, try Live at Carnegie Hall which is also an essential addition.

*About the music*
These are two classic 1971 and 1972 albums by one of the unsung heros. On "Just As I Am" Bill backed by one of the best bands of the day, the same folks who laid down the sound for Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, et. al. While some folks choose "Best Of's" to get all the hits, I personally love getting the original albums and all those diamonds in the rough that don't make the 'Best Of' cut. It gives me a good sense of what the artist was putting forth at that time. If you enjoy 1970's soul and r&b, do yourself a favor, add this one to your collection. These two albums have stood the test of time and I feel will continue to endure.

*About the sound*
I was a bit skeptical at first not being familiar w/ the Australian "Raven" label, but no more. This is a top-notch re-release in terms of its digitaly remastered sonic quality. Nice job.

I recieved this cd for a Christmas gift and love it! Mr. Griffith has a wonderful voice and gives you a feeling that your in an old Southern church. I love the way he sings these old gospel songs and the way he puts his heart and soul into each song he sings. I'm 23 and appreciate this type of music. If your a gospel fan and a Christian like I am that loves to hear good southern hymns then I recommend this cd.

Long Overdue.......2001-01-08

This is probably the best and most inspiring CD I have ever purchased! A CD of this caliber is long past due. I have always loved country gospel hymns, having grown up both Pentecostal and Baptist. I listen to this CD almost everyday, I enjoy it so much. The talent that went into the arrangements and singing is amazing, especially track #5 "When I Can Read My Title Clear" which is impressive because of the use of Bagpipes...which is something gospel music has lacked up to this point and I hope there are more albums released with hymns played on Bagpipes.

It's interesting to hear Ben Matlock sing........1999-07-30

I came to appreciate the talent of Andy Griffith through the show "Matlock," and I never realized that he sang hymns. Being a Christian, I enjoy a good hymn, so I think it goes without saying that I really like this CD. It really is very good.

Yuck..........2007-06-01

I'm really disappointed in this recording. I thought I would enjoy contemporary artists singing hymns. I thought wrong. Here's what is on the CD: Contemporary artists singing hymns in such a stylized fashion that the tune becomes nearly unrecognizable OR contemporary artists singing hymns badly. Why does contemporary have to equal bad singing technique?

The only redeeming quality (and the reason it got 2 stars instead of 1 star) about this CD is the song, "O Lord of Hosts, How Lovely" sung by Rochelle Hickman, which is GORGEOUS. However, I already own that tune on a Maranatha CD. So there isn't a point to keeping the CD. I'm giving it away in the hope that someone else will enjoy it. I certainly didn't.

The Single Best CD Gospel Collection from Johnny Cash! .......2007-05-18

I used to think that GOSPEL GLORY was my favorite Johnny Cash Gospel CD, but this CD collection, JUST AS I AM, includes 9 out of the 10 songs on GOSPEL GLORY, and then adds 11 more Gospel songs from Johnny's career, so JUST AS I AM is my new favorite Johnny Cash Gospel CD! Gospel Glory

The songs span most of his career, up to 1999 when this CD came out. It starts out a bit old fashioned, with Johnny's older Gospel style of the 1950s and 60s, but by the middle of this CD, it gets around to his 1970s style, which is my favorite era for Johnny Cash Gospel songs.

There are many classic Christian songs that are great to hear Johnny's rendition of; "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "The Great Speckled Bird," "Peace in the Valley," "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder," "Amazing Grace," "In the Sweet By and By," "The Old Rugged Cross," "Rock of Ages," "Softly and Tenderly," wow!

"Daddy Sang Bass" is the only bona fide Johnny Cash hit song on the CD, about singing Gospel songs with your family.

"The Ten Commandments" is a great song about Moses and the 10 Commandments. It is a great tune that makes it easier to remember all 10 Commandments, once you memorize the words to this song, if you are so inclined.

This CD is 55 minutes long. There are other Johnny Cash Gospel compilation CDs and other studio albums on CD, but overall, I think this is the single best CD to buy if you are looking for Johnny Cash singing Gospel, and this CD is my most heartily recommended Johnny Cash Gospel CD, this should be your first stop.

After you get this CD, I would then recommend the Johnny Cash Gospel CD compilation named GOD, which is just as entertaining, but not as heavily packed with so many Christian traditional, standard tunes as JUST AS I AM. MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK is a good studio album of songs recorded specifically for one CD release, not a career compilation. MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK has great CD booklet liner notes about each song, which are recorded with just Johnny strumming his guitar, very simply and very nicely done, in his elder years. PERSONAL FILE is a similar sounding 2 CD set, with just Johnny and his single guitar, with the second disk being entirely Gospel tunes, collected from his private recordings circa the 1970s, and has better singing and playing, but less focus and intensity than MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK. Oh, and make sure you have the Johnny Cash Reads the Complete New Testament: Collector's Edition 16 CD set of Johnny Cash reading the entire NEW TESTAMENT! That is incredibly cool! There's no music, just Johnny reading the Bible aloud. The Book of Revelation fits nicely on its own CD in the set. Sweet!

Love Johnny's Gospel.......2006-07-13

Johnny Cash is one of my favorite entertainers. The movie Walk the Line really rekindled my interest in Johnny Cash. I also truly enjoy my faith and the story of Johnny Cash's faith. In my opinion, Johnny's songs of faith are better than his standard hits. He really sings them with a deep love for the Lord in his voice. This album is a great example of Johnny singing to the Lord. Each song is very good. I have many favorites on this album.

The difinitive Johnny Cash Christian compilation..........2004-12-25

Although the other worthy compilations are "God", and "The Gospel Collection." This cd finds Cash in fine form throughout, singing such slassics as Rock of Ages, Amazing Grace, Swing Low..., and In The Sweet By & By, with conviction and feeling. excellent gospel collection covering Cash's CBS years........1999-02-14

The release contains 20 gospel selections covering Cash's CBS recording career from 1958 to 1986. One of the reasons Cash made the switch from Sun Records to Columbia Records in 1958 was the promise by producers Don Law and Frank Jones of more musical freedom in doing concept projects as well as devoting more time to the gospel aspect of his career. A good collection and overview of the Cash gospel material and an excellent addition to any Cash fan's record library. But then I'm a little prejudice...I WROTE THE LINER NOTES!!!!

I was disappointed. I thought I would be getting a CD of full length themes from his movies but the CD is exactly what it says. It is from the actual films, in sections and pieces. I can't say it was misrepresented so I guess I was at fault. But I am sorry I bought it.

As the previous reviewer rightly pointed out, these are the original recordings from the era the films were made. And yes, the sound is completely different from what we are used to hear when we are turning the CD player on: it's mono, it's partially unsteady and some of the pieces suddenly fade. BUT, it's the REAL thing and it transports the charms and the charisma, inherent to the original ONLY.
Those who prefer the flawless technical perfection of a re-recording better should save their money. But for those who love the movies and their genuine sound, should be perfectly pleased with this release.

most of the tracks on this cd are available elsewhere, but what prompts me to give this a low review is the quality of the recording. some of them sound like they were taped off of a tv set showing a warbly print. you can do better elsewhere.

the first time i got into bill withers was in 1985, my first year away from home in school. my cousin told me to listen to something,and it was a bill withers alb (+justments) and i have been hooked since then. my cousin grew up in the 50s, 60s and 70s and he was hip to all of the (real) music.this dual disc is a treasure if you are a bill withers fan,the interview on the dvd deep and educational.the 5.1 surround is excellent considering it was first recorded in the mid 70s.if you love good music and lyrics that mean something,this is a treasure to own.

A wonderful collection of show tunes ........1998-12-06

Lost in Boston II is the second group of songs that have been put on an album that were cut from well known musicals. It is better than the first Lost in Boston- only because the songs collected here have nary a loser(okay,"It Was Always You" from Applause sounds like a theme from a 70's Tv show- but it's still tuneful and endearing).Some listeners may be familair with some of these songs from the Ben Bagley compilations, but for me many were complete revelations. For example, I had heard only negative things about the score to Grand Hotel- then I played the showstopper cut from the show called" Flaemmchen the Flame Girl" - and I now would like to hear what was not cut! The same applies to the team of Jones and Schmidt. When I heard the gorgeous song, "Thousands of Flowers" I immediately went to buy the final score of "I Do I Do"... The first two Lost in Bostons confirmed how underrated this song team truly is. The liner notes are informative and to the point but as with all good stuff, they leave you wanting more.Don't miss this CD. It is better than many complete Broadway musical scores!

This is an inspirational CD, collecting some of Rev. Graham's sermons and heartwarming music from his many years of service to the Lord. Who can resist Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, The Lord's Prayer, Just As I Am, and others - they bring tears to the eyes and lump to the throat.
