Album Description

Named after the 1960s pop diva Lulu's breakthrough hit, Shout! is a hip-swiveling journey through the endlessly infectious pop classics that made superstars of female vocalists including Lulu, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, and more. I'm not a fan of revues or juke box musicals. I didn't see this show when it played off-Bway. I listened to the CD online and then ordered it. I'm glad I did because it's a trip. Having all these 60's songs on one CD is a hoot. Another plus is the orchestrations and voices of the ladies singing....both A+.

Also - the CD plays for the longest time frickin time making it perfect for blaring while cleaning the house.

I understand that the most recent thing is to take groups of one band or artist's songs and make a musical (Movin' Out; Taboo; Mamma Mia) but this takes a small group of songs from the 60's and makes a musical. Maybe if you saw the show it would make more sense, but the CD gives nothing as to the plot, or characters. This is not a Broadway CD, it's a 60's Ballad CD. Don't get me wrong, the voices and music are great, but to be advertised as anything resembling a musical is just plain wrong. Musical Theater collectors can pass on this one (that is the first time I've ever said that) it shouldn't be part of a musical collection. But if you like the golden oldies by all means get this one. I didn't give this CD two stars because it's bad, it is just advertised wrong and shouldn't be here. Favorite song: "Goin Back"

I won't keep you long...this CD is just jolly old fun. Some classic music from the Mod era are performed (quite well) by a group of women. Any of these tracks could be stand alones but together it is a great compilation of highlights from that era of music.

I had never before given a careful listen to Honegger's , no less sat and followed the French text that was inspired by the reopening of a village theater in 1921. When I got the Naxos release (8.553649) of the original version of this work, I was taken immediately not only by the beauty of the music but by the dramatic delivery of this cast. After this work had been successfully staged, a wealthy patron arranged a Paris concert version, which called for an expansion of the orchestrations and the addition of a narrator. What emerged was a 20th century oratorio. It tells the story of David from his life as a young shepherd to his death in the simplest and most vivid way: theatrically. It reminds me greatly of the Martinu "Gilgamesh" (which I highly recommend you hear also) but is less solemn. I think almost any one who like serious music will like this work; and local choral groups should take notice. Michel Piquemal conducts the Orchestre de la Cité with soloists Jacques Martin, Christine Fersen, Danielle Borst, Marie-Angel Todorovitch, and Gilles Ragon, and the Choeur Regional Vittoria d'Ile-de-France.

    The arrival of a new Anonymous 4 album has become as much a fall ritual as the turning of the leaves. However, there's nothing rote about their 12th album for Harmonia Mundi.     For me what sets apart an Anonymous 4 recording, besides the wongerful singing is the presentation of a coherent program that only enhances the listening enjoyment. This disc contains anonymous chansons and conducti--with the exception of the "Beata viscera" of Perotin. These enchanting hymns and songs to the virgin Mary are vividly brought to life by the ensemble. I highly recommend this recording.

    The child-like simplicity beguiles the music's endless array of intricacies
    and subtleties. The crisp phrasing, exquisite nuances, poingnant details of haunting beauty is heard throughout the disc. Perotin and Notre Dame over all, were lyrics of the first water.

        The beautiful, varied, and well-chosen repertoire on this disc will keep you returning to it season after season. We start with a 17th-cantury French NOEL, lovingly and simply rendered a cappella by Richard Duguay. There follow some more French carols in instrumental arrangements by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, two traditional plainchants, some sumptuous madrigal-style pieces by Schein and Monteverdi, Purcell's florid and expressive vocal monologue for the Virgin Mary, and finally the most substantial piece on the disc: Charpentier's Christmas Midnight Mass, a very interesting work based on French carol themes. The performances by the Boston camerata are warm and vibrant. This early baroque Christmas disc is a real winner.

        This cd is the Baroque equivalent of the Medieval and Renaissance Christmas albums of the Boston Camerata. It has the least varied repetoire, in part because of the Charpentier Mass - Messe de Minuit sur des Airs de Noel, a work well worth having in its entirety. There are two pieces that are chant and a marvelous piece from Germany in an Italian style - Nun Jauchzet mit Hellem Ton - to which the notes say there are two sets of words, the one recorded here in praise of the Christmas festival, the other celebrating the amorous delights of nymphs. With such a delightful piece of trivia, how could the cd fail?

        While the Boston Camerata gives its normal skilled performance, they are not as spectacular as they are on earlier music. They still are among the better interpreters of Baroque music, but it is not their speciality.

        This is an excellent Christmas cd worthy of being in any collection.

        This is a delightful record. It brings together some of Europe's best musicians for a program of primarily unfamiliar works by Saint-Saëns which show him from his most playful, humorous side, and they clearly have a grand time. The only well-known work on the program, "The Carnival of the Animals," is a portrait gallery juxtaposing the familiar with the exotic, and succeeds, by purely musical means, in evoking the salient characteristics of each creature with keen observation, psychological acumen, and benevolent wit. The Lion struts in a regal march, the Asses bray, the Birds twitter; the flute gives the Cuckoo's drooping thirds great variety of expression, the Aquarium shimmers etherially. Saint-Saëns, a brilliant pianist, even pokes fun at himself in a parody of two pianists practicing exercises in unison or contrary motion, but always slightly out of sync. He also did not scruple to borrow from his contemporaries for utmost effect: Tortoises shuffle to an Offenbach can-can, the Elephant dances to Berlioz's Valse de Sylphs, the Finale, borrowing from Rossini's Barber of Seville, is grandly operatic. "The Swan," the work's most familiar and only serious movement, is performed beautifully, with a touching, unsentimental simplicity. The "Fantasy for Violin and Harp," a bravura piece for both instruments, alternates brilliant passages with dreamy, nostalgic lyricism. Three cello pieces are slow, songful, and passionate; the last is a very successful transcription of the famous aria from "Samson and Delilah." All these works are played to the hilt for virtuosity, color, atmosphere, and expression. The Septet is another fun piece--whimsical, mischievous, comic. Everybody has lots of solos, especially the trumpet, whose virtuoso part mixes mock heroism with baroque flourishes. The Menuet is a courtly dance, the Trio a delicate love song; the slow movement is somber, the Finale a carefree romp. --Edith Eisler

        This recording of an old favorite is quite quirky...and that's what makes these fun pieces REALLY fun! The small ensemble brings intimacy to the work. My favorite was "Pianists" - hilarious.
