Album Description

"Back in the days of horses, around one hundred years, before Corvettes or Porsches, Henry Ford shifted gears..." from the title track, Days of Horses

On Days of Horses, Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman peer under the hood of their American experience. They sing about going to a double feature and listening to top ten radio (Dad Came Home), contemplating the night sky on a warm summer night (Stargazers), and about having anti-depressants, tranquilizers and coffee for breakfast (Better These Days).

They imagine riding from Memphis to Shreveport with Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Elvis Presley, and on a wintry New York City day, they yearn for a mythic Lone Star State.

5 out of 5 stars I was dead wrong.......2005-01-10

Over the past decade it seemed as though Aztec Two Step had drifted into the abyss of many good acts: annual reunion concerts that trudged through the play list of best hits and fan favorites.

As an on/off follower of the group for nearly their entire 30-year partnership, I enjoyed these reunions but felt increasingly saddened when driving home after each concert. The duo - Rex Fowler and Neil Shulman - was living in the past and what limited new material they presented seemed to fall flat with me and the crowd. I resigned myself to acknowledging that Aztec Two Step was not much more than a nostalgia act - regardless of how highly proficient they played played guitar and sang. The only thing they seemed to have lost since their last collective album was the ability to rekindle the creative magic they once had.

Well, I was dead wrong.

Fowler and Shulman have delivered an extraordinary set of songs in Days of Horses. The theme throughout is cohesive (no, it's not about horses), the lyrics intelligent and alternatively witty and poignant, the instrumentals among the best they've ever performed, and the entire production by Paul Guzzone absolutely first-class.

Whether you're an old fan or you never heard of A2S before, this is a keeper for any listener who's drawn to folk-with-a-beat and lyrics that evoke personal reminiscing while you're listening to the tunes.

It's highly unusual for two talented performers to pick up after so many years of reunion tours and create something out of fresh cloth that's not only so fresh, solid and timely, but retains their original roots. Fowler's voice has never been clearer and distinctive; Shulman's guitar work retains its technical excellence; their harmonies can melt butter.

The title song, "Days of Horses," will get you humming the melody in the middle night when you go for a drink of water. Shulman's "Better These Days" gives us the intelligent wit that he typically displays in concerts between songs, but sadly is not displayed in his previous music. "Everybody Knows," written by Fowler, is my gem of the disc and you'll be hitting the REPLAY for this cut `till you finger wears out.

I was wrong about these guys; there's so much left in them and I hope they can figure out how to reach an audience that doesn't know they exist but would love their 30 years of collective talent.

It should give us all hope that we're never washed-up in something we once did well and loved.

Most everyone my age (old) probably remembers the group Aztec Two Step. Their albums have been highly prized in the Folk and Folk/Rock collections of music fans throughout the country. Featuring well-written songs, strong harmonies, and excellent guitar work, many of their "hits" are easily recognizable anytime we are lucky enough to hear one on today's restrictive radio station playlists. Rex Fowler and partner Neal Shulman have released a new Aztec Two Step CD, "Days Of Horses," on Red Engine Records (RER003). Their first studio release since 1993's outstanding "Of Age," "Days Of Horses" is a fine collection of well crafted songs that will leave new and old fans alike hoping that it doesn't take another eleven years for the next album! The title song, along with "Stargazers" & "Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Elvis" rival anything Rex has written down through the years, and Neal contributes a couple of instant A2S classics in "Better These Days" and "I Don't Believe In Jesus (but I sure do like his songs)". Do yourself a favor and add this to your Aztec Two Step collection. Or, introduce yourself to a duo that has entertained fans for 31 years - and counting!

in three words: mellow, soothing, relaxing. the artists are from hawaii, and some numbers on this CD are sung in Hawaiian, but i wouldn't necessarily label this music "Hawaiian music." anyone looking for good music to fall asleep to will find it a good choice. if you ARE a hawaiian music fan, you're in for a real treat. you'll see some great musicians contributing...sista robi, jake shimabukuro....

i play this CD when i put my two year old to bed. i have several other lullaby CDs, but for the past two months, this has been the only one i've been playing.

4 out of 5 stars get it..for italian rain.......2005-09-24

I have heard this album a few times and all the songs are at the very least pleasing. But the one gem is 'italian rain', one of the best songs I have ever heard, period. Featuring an amazing vocal delivery, beautiful instrumentation with the help of the brilliantly talented Andrew Gold and some beautiful lyrics, without appearing preachy. Get the album for this outstanding track alone.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable.......2002-10-13

Italian Rain, Bish claims, is his first political song. It's sung from the point of view of an Eastern European victim of war who stares across the sea and longs to feel the rain (and the freedom) in Italy that's so close yet out of reach. it's a very affecting song. But done so deftly that it never sticks out as "The Political One" even though Bish himself draws attention to it.
It fits right in with the folk-pop-jazz-rock that Stephen Bishop has been sporadically producing for years. This latest one is pleasingly acoustic in feel unlike the previous "Bowling in Paris". Presumably that was why he felt it was time to include "Separate Lives" (again). The definitive version perhaps.
How does Bish still sound so good after all these years? His voice has an incredible purity and he hits some remarkable high notes.
It's all beautifully put together, very dense, meticulous. And yet frivolous at times (King of Tonga...) with moments of pure and perfect pop. Tracks like "I Go Numb" and "When You Love Somebody" show that Stephen has lost none of his ability to craft the kind of song most artists would be deeply jealous of.
There's nothing quite like a Bish album. This ranks highly with his masterpieces from the seventies.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous album - ..........2001-06-20

How did I miss this CD and why am I not hearing it on the radio? Just hear "Blue Guitars" once and you'll be humming the catchy tunes and singing the choruses all day. Great lyrics, truly beautiful songs. Bish has always been an original. If you wondered where he went after the 70s, he grew up and became the remarkable artist he truely is.

4 out of 5 stars this singer/songwriter's return to the balladeer box.......2000-08-17

...after another multi-year absence finds bish-heads, radio programmers and Phil Collins dancing-in-the-streets...albeit s-l-o-wly, that is. Any Stephen Bishop release is cause for celebration, and the approach taken on BLUE GUITARS shows a new maturity toward songwriting, arrangement and performance that has the potential to catapult Bish into a new league of appreciation by peers and public alike.

Wall Around Your Heart and especially the haunting Italian Rain capture Stephen at his finest as they peel the shorthairs from many-a soft-white-underbelly. Almost as striking are the opening I Go Numb and On Blonde Street as the latter, like the aforementioned Italian Rain, shows a new-found real-world social consciousness that is conveyed in adept lay-person terms ala form and feeling.

The problem Stephen Bishop has had to come-to-terms with, in addition to putting out yet one-more-album, is the universal fear of growing up. Just Like Romeo & Juliet, although performed in a catchy up-tempo style, has no place on this album. Equally as distracting is the nonsensical King of Tonga, which by its earlier inclusion helped propel the Art Garfunkel LEFTY album into out-of-printsville.

While taking exception to yet another repeat of Separate Lives, the remainder of the songs are a balanced mixture of heartfelt ballads and a few intriguing mid-tempo exercises in emotive lyrical expression. Which overall gives rise to a hearty welcome-back from loyalists and new listeners alike (...you are listening, aren't you, 'new listeners'?).

Now, Stephen, about your NEXT album...

4 out of 5 stars Bishop's song writing talents go "On and On".......1998-06-26

"Blues Guitars" is a success and it will appeal to all of Bishop's fans and its bound to create some new ones. His sweet voice and sensitive and melodic style permeates this offering. He receives some support on this album from an impressive list of artists including David Crosby, Carnie and Wendy Wilson and Michael McDonald who adds his usual stirring backing vocals to "Let Your Heart Remember". "Blues Guitars" is punctuated by a stunning version of "Separate Lives" which features Bishop singing only against his own acoustic guitar.

An exemplary, piece of composition. A soothing, laid back collection of songs for relaxing, or for inspiration. This CD is a wonderful collection of great songs. Each one has a different theme and will move you. Among my favorites are Dream Within, The Forgotten, and Inner City. The Forgotten has a wonderful, upbeat middle section that is not present in the song samples. Also, Inner City has a moving beat with great instrumentals. This is definately an album you will listen to again and again. I've never heard anything like it before. Very unique.

4 out of 5 stars Stop complaining and just listen.......2004-04-19

I love that the only reviews are from others bitching about how his students are his only fans. First of all, Eric Graf is a lyrical genius. The reason that his concert crowds consist of most of his students, is because he is very open about Boxstep and continually keeps them updated on his show dates. So do not start criticizing their band for their age 17-20 crowds. Its all about advertising and marketing. Once they start telling friends, those friends will tell friends, those friends will tell family members and possibly fathers in the business.... its not rocket science here. Come on, don't you people know anything. So before you start giving a bad review just based upon the listening crowd, you should listen to their newest cd, "Back Roads" for amazing voice duets, lyrics, and band jamming. Boxstep is simply amazing, and I am not just trying to get an "A".

1 out of 5 stars Boxstep is awesome!!! (This punctuation is facetious.).......2004-01-03

Like seemingly everyone else who's reviewed-or even heard of-Boxstep, I attended North Allegheny Senior High School, where Eric Graf teaches English and Creative Writing. Having never been a student of his, my involvement with Mr. Graf was mostly peripheral. Virtually every one of my friends swore by his easy classroom manner and quirky charm, and insisted that I see Boxstep live. Though I feared that a rock band helmed by a literature teacher (and rather a conceited one, in my opinion) would reach toxic levels of hubris, I reluctantly accompanied my friends to a Boxstep show at Carnegie Mellon University. I should point out that although the venue was on campus, to say that it was "at" the university is perhaps a mite disingenuous: Boxstep played between two dormitories in what was essentially a small gazebo. Turnout was unimpressive, as the majority of fans in attendance were adoring students of Mr. Graf's; I soon realized that the other half of the crowd was Boxstep's opening act, the Boas, whose workmanlike performance was actually the highlight of the evening. When Graf et al assumed the stage, we were indeed buffeted by a "wall of noise," as a fellow skeptic described the band's bludgeon-by-numbers guitar work. The incorporation of viola and accordion harmonies into conventional folk rock, a promising touch, did little more than ratchet up the decibels in that tiny portico. I was certain that one of our number would collapse in a heap, blood issuing from a ruptured eardrum, as the octet pounded away. As it turns out, the venue's heinous acoustics were something of a godsend: Graf's lyrics, lost in the din, slavishly aped tired love-and-loss bromides, with a pinch of postmodernism thrown in for flavor.
To make a long review short, Boxstep is a breathtakingly unoriginal band whose quasi-intellectual posturing belies a profound, numbing ordinariness. No one but high school girls and recent graduates with an abiding love for Eric Graf (who is oh-so-dreamy) should give the unfortunately titled Faces All Look On a second look.
        That pun was unintentional.

        3 out of 5 stars I Find It Funny..........2003-05-05

I find it funny that half of the reviews for this album are by lead singer's Eric Graf's students from the high school he teaches at. Are his students the only ones who listen to it or go to their shows? It sure seems like it if one were to look at these reviews.

Anyway, this album is pretty decent. Although I think a lot of it sounds similar and all the tracks seem to have this formula to them (that being intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-long instrumental outro), Mr. Graf's lyrics are quite good on such songs as "I Will Forget," and "UPS Worker." But still, there is something missing from this album. Maybe 1 solid rock track would be nice (look for thier next release which promises to be more rock oriented). I dunno, after hearing this album it kinda' makes me want to kill somebody, not because it's bad, but because I know Boxstep is capable of more.

        4 out of 5 stars A very pretty record.......2002-05-15

I saw Boxstep by accident at TT the Bears in Boston. A friend's band was playing there first show and they were good, followed by a very mediocre rock band. Then Boxstep comes on with mounds upon mounds of people and gear with violins and pianos and all. And they calmly begin to play some of the most gorgeous music I had ever heard live. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Very nearly a religious experience. There were maybe 10 people in the room. I was practicly drooling when I asked one of the violinists for a cd which I happily gave $10 for and would have paid more. The CD doesn't quite capture the experience of Boxstep live, and I have to take off a star just for the ine "and pardons come from a govener" but those are the only flaws on a brillient, poignent and beautiful CD that everyone should own. This CD sings me to sleep nearly every night, accompany's me on rainy days....Sounds like nothing else. They are not afraid to be pretty or to rock. Great slide guitar playing, great vocal harmonies. Great textures and brilliant songwriting. The closest thing I would say would be the Cowboy Junkies, but thats still nothing like it. Just buy it, support original artists.

4 out of 5 stars Somewhere between Type O Negative and Britney Spears..........2002-02-12

What can I say about this band? Well, I can first let everyone know that many of these songs have deep, lovely meaning...to someone, that is. And since that someone is rarely myself, I must step back and look at this thing more objectively. Perhaps I can take a New Critical Formalist Approach. Better yet, why don't I Deconstruct it??? I could easily continue to talk about this CD in terms of ME, but instead I choose to shift to the third person so that the CD can become the topic of discussion.

This CD can be thought of in terms of other bands, not because it is derivative or cliched, but rather so that the reader can have a reference point with which to approach, and hopefully appreciate, the music. Artists like Johny Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits, with their not-so-lovely voices, may come to mind in lead singer Eric Graf's terrestrial tales of location and longing. The sound is somewhere to the north of Low, to the southeast of Godspeed You Black Emperor!, a walk down from the Galaxie 500 river near the city of Dirty Three. The music creates a background of wistful desert nights and long red-eye flights across the hills and the sea, but the added dimension of Graf's vocals, with their existential need for love to try and fill the otherwise rhetorical landscape, give a feeling of eternity to the music. Sure, the search for true love will continue to elude man, but there is some hope amidst the disappointment of knowing that he will continue to pursue it until he ceases to exist.
These sorts of emotions have a hard-earned place in the hearts of anyone who has dared to give a part of themselves to someone who they find hope and security in.
Metaphors and deceptively simple lyrics give the lyrics a sort of levity that allows one to not have to walk away while scratching their head and pondering just what that guy meant anyway.

The production quality fits the organic feel of the album, and although the word "organic" could just about describe most of the music that exists in the world, this particular CD has its rightful place in being given that title.
There is a passionate approach to the material, as the artists are not dominated by musical knowledge, but more so by the spirit of their instruments and the collective feel of their sound.

Shifting to second person, if you have the urge to listen to music that lends itself to the type of emotions conveyed in the above paragraphs, then this album may very well rest comfortably on your shelf, between Luna's Penthouse and Palace Music's Viva Last Blues!.

Also, I want to give a shoutout to my boys at Amazon!! ....
