4 out of 5 stars The horn of plenty: Cannonball's most cornucopian year........2007-06-13

In the late '50s and early '60s, Cannonball Adderley enjoyed his greatest popularity as measured by the commercial success of Riverside releases featuring his own group with his brother Nat on cornet. The sessions were frequently recorded live, included spoken introductions by the ebullient leader, presented some "accessible" tunes, and spotlighted at least one real crowd-pleaser ("This Here," "Sack O' Woe," "Jive Samba," "Mercy Mercy, Mercy"), each later appearing as a hit single.

These sessions are memorable less for the individual solos than the fire of the ensemble, anchored and propelled by one of the best walking bass players in the business, Sam Jones. Returning to these once-popular Adderley brothers releases is to lament the absence of such ensembles on today's scene as well as to be reminded of the relatively hard times the alto giant (and many great players) would encounter in the late '60s/early '70s, when he had trouble booking the group (I recall Cannonball auditioning for clueless Student Activities Directors shopping for next year's campus entertainment). Regardless, any of these Adderley brothers' Riversides represents the so-called "hard bop-soul jazz" idiom at its best and, like the groups of Art Blakey and Horace Silver, should be required listening for the ensemble sound alone.

"In San Francisco" from 1959 not only established the "live action/hit single" formula but is, in its own right, an exemplary session, perhaps superior to the later Adderley brothers' recordings with pianist Victor Feldman or Joe Zawinul and tenorist/flutist Yusef Lateef. The presence of the hard-swinging Bobby Timmons certainly increased the funk and soul appeal of this Adderley edition (though some of the earlier editions of Adderley brothers' groups on Mercury and EmArcy are also worth checking out).

The leader is in especially high spirits, confiding to the crowd that Timmons' "This Here" is known in the community as "Dish heah," and putting it in the context of church music before unleashing the composer on the infectious down-home introduction of the blues/gospel/jazz waltz. The remainder of the program consists of two bristling Adderley originals and three jazz standards that, while still in the repertoires of countless musicians, are played to perfection: Randy Weston's "Hi Fly," Oscar Pettiford's "Bohemia After Dark," and Monk's "Straight, No Chaser."

If hearing the leader's typically exuberant, lusty playing on this night isn't enough to convince you that 1959 was arguably Adderley's best year (if not for jazz itself), then add to this recording three more from the same year, all featuring the indomitable altoist's juicy tone and joyous preaching: first, a brilliant, albeit neglected or underrated, Riverside quartet date entitled "Cannonball Takes Charge"; 2nd, a Mercury quintet date with Coltrane, "Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago"; finally, a certain sextet date on Columbia (and perennial Amazon best-seller) on which Adderley, along with Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Bill Evans formed the "response" team to bassist Paul Chambers' introductory musical question, "So What?"--a call still sending out shock waves of seismic proportions almost half a century later. (If you don't have Miles' "Kind of Blue," pick it up before "In San Francisco.")

5 out of 5 stars Agreeing...again..........2003-09-13

This is a supremely superior session. The 'crowd pleaser' pleases exactly as it is meant to, and when Cannonball comes in off of Bobby Timmons' 'intro' it is simply sweet, satisfying SOUL. Nat sounds great, too - and with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, this really is a workshop. Don't misunderstand, there are some 'clams' here; after all, it is a Live Workshop (Timmons plays a monster clam about 8 bars after Nat's solo on "This Here" - and notice how Louis Hayes thinks it's ending when it's not!), but the SPIRIT is unbeatable on this one. One thing - you may want to consider buying the upgraded 'Remastered' CD. The sound, at lower frequencies especially, gets a bit distorted when the levels get hot - and they get hot a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited Fun........2001-10-05

In the late 50s and early 60s Cannonball enjoyed unparallelled popularity, marked by the commercially successful Riverside releases of first his quintet and later his sextet (Yusef Lateef was the 3rd horn). The sessions were frequently recorded live, included spoken introductions by the ebullient Cannonball, featured mostly "accessible" tunes, and showcased at least one crowd-pleaser (This Here, Sack of Woe, Jive Samba, Mercy Mercy) that was also released as a hit single.

These sessions are memorable less for the individual solos than the fire of the ensemble, anchored and propelled by perhaps the best walking bass player in the business, Sam Jones. When I return to these recordings, I can't help but lament the absence of such ensembles on the scene today as well as be reminded of the relatively tough times Cannonball would encounter in the late 60s and early 70s, when he had trouble booking the group. (I remember him having to "audition" for ignorant Student Activities Directors shopping for next year's campus entertainment.)

"Live in San Francisco" is an exemplary session, certainly the equal of any of the other recordings by Cannonball with his own group. If a choice is to be made, I would personally favor the recordings with Victor Feldman on piano, rather than Joe Zawinul or Bobby Timmons, the pianist on this particular session. Regardless, with the renewed interest in "acoustic" straightahead jazz, any of the recordings should be required listening for the ensemble sound alone.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2001-05-24

I feel so guilty. I downloaded this album off of the web for free. With Cannonball teaching us about "soul" chuch music on "This Here" and with his jamming on "Hi-Fly" and "Bohemia after dark", clearly this album deserves to be purchased. Cannonball hasn't sounded this good since "Something else!" and Miles' "Kind of Blue."

5 out of 5 stars An All-Time Great.......2000-08-20

Cannonball Adderley's "In San Francisco" is one of the most exciting, influential and successful live recordings in the history of modern jazz. The all-star band, led by brother Nat on cornet, and the rhythm section of Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, tears through the CD's six tunes (Monk's "Straight, No Chaser is an addition to the original album). The album's best moment is the definitive version of Timmons' "This Here." Don't miss Cannonball in San Fran!

5 out of 5 stars Cannonball Adderley Quintet Blows Up San Francisco.......2000-07-28

I purchased this album when it was an LP, in the late 1950's. I also had the opportunity to hear and see this Quintet at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco, California. This group in person was amazing. The tone was set with "This Here" and rock the house with "Spontaneous Combustion" The solos by each member of the Quintet were fantastic. It was an opportunity to see Bobby Timmons who did the arrangements for "This Here" or as Cannonball stated he "corrupted" it to be "Dis Hear." What I liked about the LP and now the CD is that each song was not edited, the songs were allowed to the full length as was performed live. The unity of this group did bring down the house as, now the CD is doing the same in my home. It was amazing how the group would play in three quatrer time with such precision that it make a person jump-up and dance. Bobby Timmons solo on "Spontaneous Combustion," had a bit of "church gospel and R&B" in it. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and brother "Nat" Adderley complemented each other while playing together or on solo. The Quintet was welded togather in all six of the selections and are great for the ears.

"Cannonball" had an incredibly rhythmic solos, "Nat" juilant playing accented by drummer Louis Hayes and bass player Sam Jones on most of the numbers, really moved those in attendance inside and those outside of the Jazz Workshop.

All jazz lovers will miss "Cannonball" and his brother "Nat." In the meantime we are given a super CD of the groups appearence in San Francisco's jazz Worksop.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performance.......2007-01-24

This review is for the CD layer only.

I think the reviewer before me is probably accustomed to hearing the mono mix, so things don't sound right to him. I have read that in the late 50's and early 60's many jazz labels recorded using two tape machines; one mono, the other stereo. The mono feed was what was usually monitored in the control booth, and the stereo feed was often allowed to run unmonitored. At that time, the record companies were still primarily selling mono records, so this is what they mostly cared about. This turned out to be very short-sighted since the record buying public was soon to purchase stereo equipment, and they wanted stereo records to play on it. The record companies began pressing records utilizing the imperfect and neglectfully recorded stereo masters, and incredibly, most mono masters were eventually discarded.

On this stereo recording, the instruments aren't always mic'd optimally, sometimes there is crowd noise (it's a live recording), and the bass drum distorts due to it being recorded at too high a level, but all things considered, it's a good recording with a lot of presence. This is a very good performance, and overall, a pretty good recording with some warts. I wouldn't pass it up.

4 out of 5 stars Super audio sucks!.......2007-01-19

I 1st. heard this album in 1962,it is an all time favorite of mine.Remastering ,superaudio, hybrid stero, or whatever else they have done to this latest CD has damaged rather than enhanced. This Here and Spontaneous Combustion are not to bad thus the four stars. The other cuts are ruined with discordinate sounds and very poor mixing. The Best of Lester Young another remastered album was simarily denigrated. Discordinate sounds, and a severe muting of the marvelous base and drum tracs. apparently these sound engineers are tone deaf with no ear for music.

Cannonball Adderley had left Miles Davis's band just a few weeks before he took his new quintet into San Francisco's Jazz Workshop for a month-long stay in 1959. With his brother Nat on cornet and a tight rhythm section of Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums, Adderley had constructed one of the better bands of the hard bop era, a vehicle in which his elegant sound and blues roots could shine. Adderley's soul-jazz emphasis is immediately apparent on Timmons's opening "This Here," a gospel-suffused waltz, and it continues with the call-and-response horns of "Spontaneous Combustion." But there are other dimensions to the band as well, and Adderley chose their repertoire carefully. Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly" became a jazz standard as a result of the performance here, and there's a blazing version of Oscar Pettiford's "Bohemia After Dark," driven along by Hayes's powerful, almost Blakey-like drumming. Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" lopes along at a crisply swinging pace impeccably defined by Jones's bass. Every musician makes a significant contribution to the date, but it's the collective chemistry that makes it stand out, the sheer joy communicated in well-made, hard-driving music. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Must for Jazz lovers..........2005-09-13

I have been hearing Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins & Bud Powell for quite a long time but never got myself acquinted with Cannonball's album which I bought lately and believe me I have found the sound which I look for...Nat and Cannonball had an awesome session which is unforgettable and apart from that, the entire album if free-flowing.

5 out of 5 stars Cannonball in San Francisco.......2005-04-04

The debut album of the newly revived Cannonball Adderley quintet remians one of the quintessential live albums ever recorded. Even though the band had only been working together for a few weeks at the time, they are still incredibly tight and work extremely well together. This exceptional group included the Adderley brothers, the amazing composer/pianist Bobby Timmons on piano, and the incredible rhythm team of Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. The quintet smokes on every one of these fine selections, especially "This Here" and "Hi-fly", which became jazz standards due to the incredible performances found here. Cannonball's dialogue in between tracks is worth the charge alone. So if you love any kind of music, I assure you that this spectacular album will make you happy no matter how many times you pop it into your stereo!
