5 out of 5 stars A Treasure!.......2006-12-27

This is one of my all-time favorite jazz albums and it sets a wonderful mood for either a quiet night alone, or with the one you love. But this is much more than backgroud music! Wes Montgomery's genius shines through on the incredible version of "Round Midnight" and also on "Whisper Not" and "Too Late Now" which will send chills down your spine. This disc is a landmark moment in jazz history that any fan of the genre should own. You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring .......2006-06-27

Wes Montgomery's three piece trio consisted of organist Melvin Rhyne and drummer Paul Parker. What defines Wes Montgomery? Is it his octaves, block chords, or his amazing solo's? I think they all fit into the define category. This was my second Wes Montgomery album and I in fact favored The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery over The Wes Montgomery Trio. But dont get me wrong this is def. a Wes Montgomery classic album. From the start of the album you can hear how inspiring Wes Montgomery's playing was on 'Round Midnight, from the soft sounds of Whisper Not. Missle Blues Demonstrates how creative and talented Wes's natural style was. If your a first time listerner to this kind of music and play guitar i would highly recommend listening over the album a couple of times to get alot of beautiful notes you may have missed, if you really want to play some real jazz guitar. Wes's natural style also made him inspiring to many guitar fans such as myself. Jingles is definetly one of my all time favorite songs on The Wes Montgomery Trio. This was Wes's debut album into the jazz world, it was recorded on October 5 and 6 of 1959. You will be inspired after you listen to The Wes Montgomery Trio. Highly Recommended!!!!

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars.......2006-02-09

Quite different from his later big-band recordings. Some of the songs that you may find on Wes' 'BEST OF' collections sound too much like elevator music. Not so with this debut album. A drummer, a organist, and a guitar player; no horn section. Stripped down in the sence of band size but very deep and articulate playing. He shows of his trade mark octave playing, his chord solos (played over the organs rythm chords none the less), and flashy runs across the fret board when needed. A good CD to start with for the guitarist who wants to play jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Not Typical.......2000-12-28

This is not your typical sounding jazz record, so don't be too surprised or turned off when you initially hear it. I've discovered that the music on this one tends to grow on you over time. Of course, this version of "Around Midnight" is one the best ever, but there a lot of other gems here. The other bonus about this record is the clear, crisp sound quality. You feel like you're right next to his amp. If you like jazz guitar this is must have.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Forget this One.......2000-12-05

Wes' second album for Riverside is the celebrated "Incredible Jazz Guitar". This is is first Riverside effort, done in the organ trio format. Don't start with 'Incredible' and forget this one! Some great tracks: 'Round Midnight', 'Yesterdays' and 'Ecaroh'.

If you decide to skip the organ trio format because you think you don't like it, then you miss Mel Rhyne on this one, and on others in the Riverside catalog. You don't want to do that.

Also of interest on this one is a very early version of Wes' own standard, 'Jingles', played much differently than what one hears later in his career. Wes is the best.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL PERFORMANCES FROM WES, BILLY, AND TWO SURPRISE GUESTS.......2006-12-01

Five SWINGING Stars. This wonderful, surprising disc is much more than is presented in the title. True, there is guitar wizard Wes Montgomery and the effusive jazz piano master Dr. Billy Taylor and his protean trio (Ben Tucker on bass and Grady Tate on drums): all in GREAT form. But there is also the nonpariel jazz/blues vocalist Joe Williams with a whopping 8 tracks all to himself with Wes and Billy in non-solo support but 'comping' superbly, and then Wes and trumpeter/flugelhornist Clark Terry bring a hot quintet to these proceedings with 4 bonus tracks of extended performances.

We expected Wes and Billy and we got more! Lonehill Jazz has stuffed alot of music on one disc for our listening pleasure and basically kept some of it a surprise. It's not until we flip the CD jewel box over and look at the back cover, as we get into listening mode, that the totality of it all is revealed. All of which makes this a real bargain for the jazz fan. Thank you, LoneHill Jazz!

There are many Pieces De Resistance from beginning to end but here's a few. I have played "Body and Soul" over and over since purchase, and it has Wes in solo all the way with some dazzling runs (omitting the bridge on the first run and the first half of the bridge on the second run, providing another satisfying slant on this classic which is different from his two previously recorded renditions, all in 2 satisfying minutes and some change-"hit the repeat button again, please"); Taylor's beautiful ballad "Freedom" has Dr. Bill all the way, waxing rhapsodic with two-handed block chords and dancing single lines; a RIVETING Joe Williams makes the most of his 8 tracks and is in great voice especially on "Let's Make the Most of a Beautiful Thing", a stupendous "Alone Together", and "All My Life". Most tracks to this point are relatively short and satisfying performances with the performers cutting quickly but deeply into each song.

Wes and Clark Terry then arrive on the scene with an impressive Dutch rhythm section in tow for three stupendous 8 minute performances, and one great 14 minute performance of Ellington's "In A Mellow Tone", recorded LIVE in Europe. Which is great because Wes is well-known for his 'jacked-up' "live" performances, as evidenced by Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" and "Wes Got Rhythm" (a re-weaving of Monk's "Rhythm-a-ning.") and he and Clark are on fire, both in solo or 'comping', probably giving the Dutch rhythm section the most memorable rides of their musical lives at that point in their careers. In all, an enjoyable, eclectic CD with fabulous jazz performers and performances in clear remastered sound (but some may find Wes' early tracks sound a little fuzzy but it didn't bother me), plus informative liner notes. Highly recommended. Five SURPRISING Stars!!!

(Notes:
*The Billy Taylor/Wes Montgomery/Joe Williams sessions are from November 1963 in New York.
*The Clark Terry/Wes Montgomery sessions are from April 1965 in Hilversum ("Media City"), the Netherlands.
*Total time: 79 minutes 50 seconds for 20 tracks on a 20-bit CD.)

4 out of 5 stars Late night Bird?.......2007-01-26

There is an implied mellow or introspective mood with an album called LATE NIGHT JAZZ. Such dreamy feelings are well-established on this collection until Charlie Parker jars us from our reveries and gets the cops banging on the door with his blaring and raucous rendition of "Night And Day." This jolt halfway through the set is enough to give a ferret insomnia!

Except for that one misstep (and a quick poke-in-the-ribs crescendo on "Body And Soul"), LATE NIGHT JAZZ consistently delivers perfect wee small hours music, as performed by some of the best names in mid-20th century jazz. Transfer quality here is top notch-- songs are full-length. No liner notes beyond a playlist.

The K2 remasters are all good; I still havent find one that is not acceptable. But this one just made me open my eyes wide and my jaw dropped to the floor. Wow! you can feel the amp burning in your living room, like being in the famous Missile room where Wes used to play. This one has to be one of the best debut albums in jazz; no wonder why Wes was already considered the best guitar player around before he recorded this, his first album.

      4 out of 5 stars Great playing.......2007-04-26

Richie Hart is an accomplished musician. He has outstanding tone, and really hits the Wes concept really hard. Unfortunately i felt like i was listening to wes instead of him. I think hes got his own style but its almost too wes like for my own tastes.
I have had the opportunity to study with Richie Hart at a Berklee guitar camp and hes an outstanding teacher and an outstanding person/musician. He is truely a vetran and deserves alot of respect.
