"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

One of the greatest singer-songwriters of the rock era. Solo. Acoustic. January 19, 1971. Live At Massey Hall, the legendary concert from Neil Young, is finally officially released, and in highresolution stereo, in this CD+DVD package (also as a solo CD). The acclaimed Toronto performance features classics "Old Man" and, in a suite, "A Man Needs A Maid" and "Heart Of Gold" (before they were recorded for Harvest) along with some of his most popular songs ("Cowgirl In The Sand," "Ohio") as well as the most obscure ("Bad Fog Of Loneliness"). Live At Massey Hall is a newly mined rock gem.

5 out of 5 stars great purchase.......2007-07-19

Captures Neil Young at a great period of creativity. Classic solo versions of earlier work, exposure to stripped-down versions of future hits, and great piano and guitar work. DVD also captures the whole thing, really gives you a feeling for what Young's life was like back then.

5 out of 5 stars simply put.......2007-07-17

One of the best live performance albums ever. Released today, it provides a rare crystallized insight into the explosive creativity of Neil Young in the early 1970s. This recording is as intimate as it gets -and as honest as true confession.

Brilliant, moving, passionate, real. Oh, how rare that is in 2007. How joyful when you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the #1 Neil Young Album.......2007-07-13

Because of this album, I have become a compulsive Neil Young freak. This is the CD that made me compulsive about the guy (and anyone he worked with). Buy it. NOW.

I have always liked Neil Young, but this album puts him in an entirely new light for me. I used to think of him as a subpar Dylan -- nice tunes, distinctive homey voice, not as prolific. All of that changed with Massey Hall's release. It is mesmerizing. The sound quality is truly audiophile -- how did they DO that? The album is so good it forced me to study Neil and his art in depth.

Having studied his work now, I'd now put Neil Young on par with Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan and George Harrison as a singer-songwriter. Most would disagree with me, but I would now put him even above Bob Dylan, for the simple reason that Neil Young has never lost a step in 40 years. Even the "dark years" produced wonderful albums. The songs here are simply stunning. They will literally bring tears to your eyes.

The DVD is worth having because it has a few interesting interviews -- especially the one with the "Old Man."

3 out of 5 stars Neil - what's the deal?.......2007-06-24

Here's the skinny on the DVD: The extra features, such as a clip from Neil performing 2 songs on "the Johnny Cash show" and the footage of Neil on his ranch with the hired hand that inspired the song "Old Man", are pretty cool. But I began to notice subtle differnces in the audio and the video (very subtle - but they're there). Then it hit me: The video is NOT the same performance as the audio track. That's why there is no video footage of the portions where Neil is speaking to the audience and on quite a few of the songs as well. The video of this Massey Hall show doesn't exist.
This is what I would expect from a bootleg. Why Neil Young feels the need to market a con such as these (see the reviews on the Filmore East show) is beyond me. But I still love him...

5 out of 5 stars CD GREAT-DVD, FORGET IT.......2007-06-18

Short, sweet and to the point. The concert at Massey Hall is a Neil Young acoustical classic. A lot of songs that were new at the time and have since become classics along with a few old favorites.

Unless you just have to have everything by Neil Young, just get the CD - you can live without the DVD. Out of 68 minutes, a repeat of the CD, you get - if you're lucky, maybe 20 minutes of poorly photographed concert footage. And what's the remainder? If you're stoned and really get your jollies in watching a film of tape recorder taping the concert, you'll truly enjoy the DVD. Yep, that's the bulk of the DVD - a tape recorder recording the concert with Neil singing in the background. And from the looks of the surroundings, the tape recorder isn't even at Massey Hall, but probably somewhere else.

A truly great CD which belongs in the collection of every Neil Young fan. You can live without the DVD and not miss a thing. Take the money you'll save by purchasing just the CD sans DVD and buy another Neil Young album.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Neil in his Prime!.......2007-06-03

Whether you are a Neil Young fan or not, this is a 'must hear' live recording for anyone who loves great folk music! The lyrics and melodies are both pensive and mirthful, taking you back to a simpler time when life and love was easier to contemplate. Neil's trademark stiletto-falsetto-like voice was beginning to peak, piercing your heart gently with melancholic honesty and sincerity. I have been a fan of his most of my life and, although I have enjoyed hearing Neil's later albums and how his talent has evolved through the years, (IMHO) nothing compares to his solo seventies creations! Thanks, Neil, for reminding us once again how music can touch our soul and be a soothing constant in this mad, erratic world.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate Experience With Neil Young Live.......2007-05-27

The Cd opens to the sound of applause. The first song, "On The Way Home" sets the tone for the following 16 songs. Being a huge Neil Young fan, this is the CD you don't want to miss. When he introduces his "new" songs like "Old Man," I get chills. Amazing vocals combined with an adoring live audience, makes this an intimate listening experience that is beyond awesome. If I couldn't be there, this is the next best thing. He finishes the set with a humble rendition of, "I am a Child." His voice is sweet & sincere and takes me back to another time, the senenties. Also, having my own child now, I found the lyrics particularly profound. If you love Young, you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2007-05-27

Beautiful music by Neil Young. Simple and complex at the same time. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Real.......2007-05-14

This is probably one of the most honest and true live recordings in my collection; just Neil with guitar and piano. The performance is top notch, and the sound just soars; perfect blend! Some real highlights are the piano performance of "Heart of Gold", the soft and mysterious "Old Man" and of course, the first two tracks, which reach back to where Neil came from with Buffalo Springfield, and where he "currently" was during the After The Goldrush album. The album is a great bridge between the electric Neil and the Harvest sound he'd record later in the year.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-07

Excellent album; sound quality is great, musicianship is solid as always. Looking forward to hearing many more early Neil Young live albums as they are released from the vault.

Sweeping Up the Spotlight: Live at the Fillmore East 1969 features the definitive edition of Jefferson Airplane, icons of 1960s psychedelic rock and political agitation. Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden hold down the free-floating rhythms on bass and drums, Jorma Kaukonen launches feedback-laced guitar solos, and Paul Kantner adds rhythm guitar and backing vocals. Topping it all are the voices of Marty Balin and the '60s acid queen, Grace Slick. In concert, the Airplane were always more rough and ready than on their acid-hued vinyl. Outside the studio, they were ramshackle and punky, which is why they were sometimes referenced when talking about punk bands like X, who also had male and female lead singers. Despite having six albums under their belt, mostly consisting of original material, the Airplane's live set has a lot of mediocre blues and folk filler. Some of their more characteristic repertoire is sacrificed to workman-like renditions of "Uncle Sam Blues" and "Come Back Baby," albeit with some ripping Kaukonen guitar solos. Balin's raucous rant on "You Wear Your Dresses too Short" is embarrassing in its soul-singer aspirations. Assuming this was their set sequence, it takes a while for the Airplane to congeal on stage. They ride roughshod over much of their materiel, but pull it together two-thirds of the way through on one of their most complex tunes, "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil." With its shifting time signatures and overlapping vocal lines and harmonies, it's a challenge to pull off live, but they do, with soaring vocals from Balin and Slick and a long instrumental jam with a fractured guitar solo from Kaukonen and a feature slot for bassist Casady, the most innovative and powerful bassist from that era. That paves the way for a darker version of "White Rabbit," the mock celebration of "Crown of Creation," and their show closer, a hyped rendition of Fred Neil's ballad "The Other Side of This Life." As they always did, the Jefferson Airplane land high. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I liked this one.......2007-07-12

There are some new previously unreleased live recordings of the Airplane on the market. This one is good, and from their best period. I loved the Airplane in that period, when I consumed illegal substances; crimes for which the statute of limitations has expired. This has material from early Airplane through Volunteers.

The Airplane's musical and technical genius is best reflected in their studio recordings. This is a very good live recording of an excellent sample of their music. If you think you don't have enough Jefferson Airplane records you can buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars You DO Know Jack.......2007-07-05

We can discuss whether or not this CD is as good as BIPLH or not. A couple things I'd like to mention from my perspective that make this CD different:
1) If you are a fan of Jack's, then you want this CD. He does a solo on Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil that is OFF THE FREAKING HOOK, my brothers and sisters. This solo--and Jack took way too few of them if you ask me-- feels like tectonic plates shifting. On the rest of the CD his playing absolutely ROARS as well. No one before or since has ever played bass like Jack. When Jorma joins in after the solo Jack even manages to feed on the energy and take it to still a higher level.

(Aside: To say the singing and harmonies are "uneven" is to be kind. Like so much of their live work, the vocal are just silly and indulgent.)

2) I really like how you can hear what Kantner was doing for a change. This must be a result of modern sound technology. It adds a dimension that we had to struggle to enjoy in the past and I am very glad they captured his work here.

Is it better than BIPLH? It's different. It's worth it if only for Jack's playing but there is so much more to enjoy too. Take care.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, they were that good.......2007-06-29

I was born and raised in NYC and whenever the JA was at the Fillmore (Spring, August, and over Thanksgiving) I was there for both shows-- the early and late (the latter necessitating going back out after my parents went to bed)-- so I can say with certainty that I was at the performances that are on this disc.

Because of my experience at these shows, the JA was always THE band. Sometimes Mitch Mitchell of the JH Experience would sit in, often there was a free concert in the park on Sunday where the JA, the GD or Santana would blend together.

The creativity of the band, the depth and variety of its musicality, its emotional range, its intensity, its fearlesses (and sometimes they did crash!) and its passion all moved me greatly. And bass player Jack Casady , , , WOW.

The recorded output of the band, as brilliant as most of it is, never fully captured the Airplane live on a night when it was on-- not even "Bless its Pointed Little Head" fully got it-- not the best performance of Bear Melt or Rock Me Baby by a long shot and the other performances such as Its No Secret, 3/5ths of a Mile, Somebody to Love and Plastic Fantastic Lover are no where near the band's peak levels of creativity and intensity.

It is from this perspective that I say that this disc gets it TRUE.

This was the song of my youth (I'm now 54) and with this disc I touch the place in me that is always young.

That said, I teach martial arts for a living and I find that when I play this disc for a training session that my students often ask me "Who was that? That was really good, I want it get one, etc".

There is something here which resonates across time, , ,

The Adventure continues, , ,

4 out of 5 stars Great live CD.......2007-06-27

This is a lot more entertaining than the hit and miss "Live at Filmore East" CD put out a few years ago. The band seems a lot more energetic and up for giving the audience a great performance. The sound quality is still not on par with "Bless It's Pointed Little Head", but far superior than the dismal sound of "Last Flight". The only song they could've left off was "You wear your dresses too short", which goes on far longer than needed. I could think of a dozen other JA songs they could've put in there that would've brought this up to a 5 star release.

When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through "Cheek to Cheek" and getting down and bluesy on "Stormy Monday" on this live set from 1996, it's nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice's vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious--and soul-shaking--on the slower side, as with Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water," Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Tall Trees in Georgia," and "What a Wonderful World." On these latter tunes, Cassidy's mix of aching clarity and rich warmth has a melting quality, speaking through the body to some evanescent presence that she seems to know all too well. She improbably makes Sting's "Fields of Gold" an emotional powerhouse just as easily as she makes Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" an offhand declaration of feeling equal to nearly anything in the jazz vocal canon. In doing so she earns her place among the great singers--artists who could take any song and stamp it indelibly as their own. What Eva Cassidy had in her short life was an unbelievably perfect voice and a musical soul that grasped gospel, folk, blues, jazz, and all points in between as if they were mere stops on a single train ride. Alas, her ride ended in 1996, tragically early. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington, D.C., Jan. 2, 1996, where the late folk singer/songwriter had a loyal following. 13 tracks, including four that appeared on her breakthrough 1998 album, 'Songbird'. Blix Street.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great performance, great recording.......2007-07-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this and am happy I purchased it. Every bit of it is exceptional, the performance, the venue, and the recording. Definitely a great CD for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars ahead of her time.......2007-05-12

Wonderful music, we have everyone of her CD's. So sad that she isn't still around to make more wonderful music!

5 out of 5 stars Her definitive album.......2007-04-19

As I pulled into work one morning back in '98, I heard a song from this album on a public radio out of DC. Fortunately, reception was clean and clear that morning, and I listened in astonishment to the singer's remarkable interpretation of a song I had heard before (and, quite frankly, didn't really like). I had trouble finding the CD anywhere in Baltimore (there had been only a limited release on a small label), but when I eventually did find it, the whole was as remarkable as the one song.

From start to finish, this is an extraordinary album, showcasing the remarkable breadth of a talent too soon lost. To me, "Live at Blues Alley" is Eva's definitive album, and it ranks in my top ten albums of my fairly extensive collection. Listen to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great vocalist.......2007-03-20

This album is one of my favorites, the music ranges from joyful to thoughtful to hauntingly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best female voices I have ever heard........2007-03-08

This is the second time I have purchased this CD. I bought one for a friend because I have fallen in love with Eva's voice. There are so many qualities in those pipes. She can put her own spin on every song she has redone and made it unique. I really don't have words to describe her. What a loss it is for her family and her fans because she was just beginning to be discovered. She never compromised her art for anyone. She had a pure voice and pure soul and it came thru in her music.

If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. It's lovely. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful ending for 1976.......2007-05-29

First 2007 release of the Grateful Dead (I hope there's more to come). "Live at the Cow Palace" features the complete show The Dead gave on New Year's Eve 1976. Nicely "digipaked", this set also includes a nice booklet with interesting liner notes which focus on (of course) the band, but also on the history of the Cow Palace. These notes point out the bad acoustics of this big hall, but forget about that for this set is beautifuly recorded and the sound quality is simply superb. All the instruments are clearly heard and the sound is certainly warm and tremendously enjoyable.
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.

The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.

1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.

The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.

Post scriptum:
I still can't find the reason for all that detraction against Donna Jean. Go on and loathe her while I enjoy her voice, I don't care.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome new release from the Dead archive.......2007-05-20

There was a period in the late 90s up to a few years ago that the Dead released live albums from their rich back catalogue, including the seminole "Dick's Picks" releases. Things have been much quieter in the last 2-3 years. Among other things, the Dead have turned over further releases from their back catalogue to the well-respected Rhino label.

"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.

I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.

Celebrated and adored for his sanguine lyrics and irresistible hooks, Cat Stevens was one of the rare singer-songwriters capable of composing genuinely optimistic songs that didn't leave a sappy residue in listeners' ears. However, even a cursory listen to 1972's Catch Bull at Four proves that the Cat had seen darkness, too, and that those darker elements had become more pronounced than they'd been in the past. His vocal style shifts from the cool croon that made Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat top sellers to a harsher, almost growling delivery. The album's standouts--the wistful reverie "Sitting" and the delightfully infectious "Can't Keep It In"--are resolute in lyric and melody. Rambling, mystical odes such as "The Boy with a Moon & Star on His Head," "Angelsea," and "Sweet Scarlet" offer quaintly romantic imagery and lavishly undulating melodies. But it's the mercurial dynamics and driving melody of "18th Avenue (Kansas City Nightmare)" and the bitter conviction of "Ruins" that give the album a backbone and a sense of balance. --Sally Weinbach

5 out of 5 stars Cat's Early Seventies' Transition.......2005-01-28

Cat Stevens' fourth album for A&M records is a definite treat. The first Cat Stevens LP to feature a promotional label: (2 different labels on one record), and I believe the first of those 4 albums to feature electrical instruments. This album contains the top 20 hit "Sitting" as well as the acoustic masterpiece "Boy with a moon and star on his head". Cat's first big rocker was "Freezing Steel" from side 2. Also included are "Angelsea" and "Silent Sunlight" which i think are the best ones on the album. The remastered CD has brilliant sound, just like the LP right out of the shrink wrap. If you are just discovering the sound of Cat Stevens, "Catch Bull At Four" is an excellent first choice. The musical energy will fill you up.

5 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly one of the Cat's classic albums.......2004-10-23

It is unfortunate that many reviewers of `Catch bull at four' have tended to regard it as a poorer quality album than its two predecessors `Tea for the tillerman' and `Teaser and the Firecat'. I feel that this does the album a great injustice; no artist should be expected to remain unchanging in style, and if he had simply stayed with a winning formula after the success of `Teaser' Cat Stevens could rightly have been criticized. However, Stevens demonstrated integrity and vision throughout the early years of the 1970s, with each of his first five Island Records albums showing a clear progression and artistic development, even if on occasions (perhaps most notably `Foreigner') this was not always commercially successful.

After achieving a very focused and concise style on `Teaser', Cat Stevens understandably wanted to experiment with more unusual song structures and ambitious arrangements, and the result is a somewhat more stylistically diverse album than its predecessors. As a result it is, if anything, a stronger, more musically satisfying album, and includes new elements such as electric guitar, synthesizer, female backing vocalists and the accomplished keyboard work of Jean Roussel. At the same time, the album retains much of what made Cat's earlier work appealing, and also includes the welcome re-appearance of the bouzouki to add its distinctive sound to `O Caritas'.

The mood of the album is at times somber, reflecting Stevens' continuing spiritual pilgrimage at this time, and his deep feelings perhaps show through most in the opening track `Sitting' and the bleak closing song `Ruins'. Though there are a couple of weaker tracks (such as `Boy...' which has a pleasant arrangements but a rather tedious, over-long lyric, and `Angelsea' which is perhaps too dominated by synthesizer sounds), these can be appreciated as valid musical experiments, and are more than compensated for by other very appealing up-tempo tracks (such as `Sitting', `Can't keep it in' and `O Caritas'). The album contains several lovely ballads, such as `Sweet scarlet' and the madrigal-like `Silent sunlight', whilst the more complex song structure of `18th avenue', with its orchestral interlude and changing rhythms, hints at the direction Cat would take with his next album `Foreigner'. The whole package is enhanced by the crystal clear remastering, and restoration of the stylish original album artwork. Altogether, `Catch bull at four' can be regarded as a very satisfying album which, along with `Tillerman' and `Teaser' ranks among Cat Stevens' best work.

5 out of 5 stars Like all of Cat Stevens' albums - about 2/3 superb .......2004-09-25

This seems to be a trend and applies to at least his first six A&M releases, except FOREIGNER, which was maybe 1/3 superb. Although "Silent Sunlight" and "Sweet Scarlet" are two of the most beautiful songs Cat Stevens ever recorded, I would recommend CATCH BULL AT FOUR on the strength of "18th Avenue" alone. That song is his studio masterpiece, in my opinion. And listen to the chanted chorus in "Angelsea". Supposedly the voices repeatedly chant "Oh, Carly Simon says, oh, Carly, why?". After all, she did have a romance with Cat Stevens shortly before meeting James Taylor. Could Cat Stevens be the subject of "You're So Vain"? Nahhh. The #1 candidate for that dubious honor is still Warren Beatty. Anyway, buy CATCH BULL.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars spiritual americana.......2007-01-06

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb .......2006-08-07

This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.

5 out of 5 stars Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I'm Doin' Things That Haven't Got a Name Yet .......2007-06-16

Read the reviews below to get a sense of the emotional response this album evokes. It's not just a so-called psychedelic album, it's an album of great searching and yearning for an alternate path during times dark with the Vietnam war, the clunky Johnson administration (JKF was still a recent martyr, RFK not yet dead), and the very cold war (Nuclear annihilation anyone?). The baby boomers could not believe the cornucopia of new sounds and experiences available to them, as the radio got looser and everyone began to swap their monophonic record players for high end stereos. This album made no sense to people expecting a continuation of "Pillow", but true fans listened over and over to this record until the grooves were worn out. Something in this album, LSD influenced or not, resonated with a lot of music lovers, and it remains an iconoclastic "screw you" tip o' the hat to the music biz. The Airplane embodied the spirit of the antiestablishmentarianism of the times, a template of non-conformity during a very conformist time (next up, Richard Nixon). Grace Slick et al have become forgotten relics of a time of great passion and desire for a better reality, and god knows we could use a band as rebellious and expressive now. A great aural souvenir of a transitional time in Amerikan culture.

4 out of 5 stars here we go.......2007-06-10

After Bathing At Baxter's isn't quite the outrageous trippy inspiration that many reviewers tend to make it sound. Surprisingly, much of the album is quite listenable and melodic. "Martha", "Wild Tyme", "Watch Her Role" and "Two Heads" are pretty normal songs. Nothing really outrageous about those ones.

The rest of the album is, however, pretty strange. It's also a pretty hard album to give a rating too, because all the experiments probably make it a tricky listen the first few times, but on the other hand, the songs that are melodic and memorable probably are some of Jefferson Airplane's best tunes.

An album worth hearing, and possibly owning. It would probably be wise to save this album for last in your Airplane journey. Just my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A Marking Point.......2007-06-06

This album was truly a marking point for the band. With the first album being a huge success under their belt, it sounds like they felt they could let the listener into their heads a bit. From start to finish this album is a friendly reminder that experience is what life is about.

5 out of 5 stars Unsung Hero.......2007-05-21

Baxter's is probably the Airplane's finest studio album. No, really! They were at the height of their creative powers, and they took a lot of time in producing this album. They had asked Frank Zappa to produce it, but he was quite busy with his own projects, so they did it themselves. Coming off of their highly successful Surrealistic Pillow, they were clearly working together and developing their music as a unit. With more tracks to work with in the studio, they made full use of them without sounding too cluttered. The songs are well crafted without taking away the sponaneity of what they did in live performances. The album is clearly psychedelic, and the songs are weird, but this is what they were about. This album captures their sound at its finest. There are no real "hits" on this album, which is what I like about it. They were allowed to create music without worrying about Jefferson "airplay."

4 out of 5 stars An indispensable example of psychedelia.......2007-04-18

After Bathing at Baxter's is uncompromising, drug-induced psychedelic music. It could have been produced only on the West Coast and only during the heady experimental era that begun in 1967 and ended before the decade was out. The band's Surrealistic Pillow, released at the beginning of 1967, consisted primarily of radio friendly songs. Baxter's is a wholly different kettle of fish. Although the record sold very well, the last thing that you would call it is commercial. It was never an easy listen. I find that many albums that I thought "out there" when released now sound more or less conventional. Baxter's still sounds as imaginative and avant-garde as it did in 1967. Jorma Kaukonen's guitar and Grace Slick's voice are unique in rock and roll. Whether they are harmonizing or playing off each other Marty Balin and Grace Slick are a perfect paring. Jack Casady really gives his base a good workout. Spencer Dryden shows why a talented drummer is worth his weight in gold (rejoyce). On this record the band members are consistently on the same page. This music is not for everyone. But for those who appreciate the psychedelic genre it is one of the indispensable recordings.

A great cd for those of us who were not blessed to see and hear Townes Van Zandt live during his lifetime. If you have never experienced the unbelievable talent of this Texas Troubadour, then this is the perfect cd to make his acquaintance and fall in love.

5 out of 5 stars Great Folk Singer.......2007-05-23

I haven't listened to this since about 1985 which I had on an album and I was very glad to be able to purchase it on C.D. It has brought back some old memories and inspired me to play some more of his songs on guitar, some of which I learned from my guitar teacher when I was a teenager. I hope more people buy this and realize how good of an artist Townes Van Zandt is and know he is the person who wrote the song "Pancho and Lefty"- not Willie Nelson. Thanks Amazon for providing me the access to be able to get this recording again.

5 out of 5 stars Best intro to TVZ.......2007-05-14

If you are new to Townes Van Zandt, this is a great first purchase. It is Townes at his best - live, relaxed, and having fun.

5 out of 5 stars Pure genious.......2007-03-08

Everyone who loves or even likes singer/songwriters has to buy this CD... It is without a doubt one of the top five finest cd's ever made...

Buy this as soon as possible.

Peace.

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.
