How to play Jazz Trombone in 8 steps........2005-05-18

If you're a trombone player or just a person that appreciates jazz music you can't pass this album up. These guys were and still are some of the greatest players. It's so great to hear each of them develop their ideas of the course of the songs. They each feature a different technique, each pleasant and interesting in their own way. I'm partial to J.J. b/c his stuff just amazes me. His technique is incredible and his solo work is a pleasure to listen to. But you have to give up to all of these guys.

Ignore the previous reviewer. If you look at all that guy's reviews they are all one star and completely negative. At least he is consistant and I hope he cheers up soon.
Here is a nice album recorded live at a session with Mingus bringing together 4 of the great modern trombonists. If ya don't like bebop don't buy it. Such a dichotomy of approaches to playing the instrument. A feast for jazz trombonists and a chance to hear these guys stretch out !

Songs." Listen to "Stardust"(is it really Stardust?)
and you'll see what I mean. Beboppers should see a
shrink instead of bothering us with their nervous
ticks(or licks?).

hmmm? well, this is a dazzling album, if not simply for the fact that it is a series of LIVE recordings (ALIVE). that such a collection of stylistically different and mutually appreciative trombonists can be found on it is only one reason to check it out. listen to stardust and you'll know what i'm saying- listen to the sounds of the club in the background, and the honestly of the playing....

While this recording does not have the best quality of sound on it, it has some incredible improvisation by JJ Johnson, Kai Winding, and Benny Green. It is an excellent cd, with some incredible tunes on it (my favorite being Night on Bop Mountain). While the recording sounds old fashioned in quality, that only adds to the feeling of jazz one gets while listening.

The Way It Was.......2003-05-17

I own this album. My favorite cut on it is "Say Jack" - named for WOV's (later WADO's)deejay "Pear Shape" Jack Walker and used as his opening theme. When I was a senior in a white suburban NYC high school, a bunch of us would gather each morning in the parking lot of the HS, discuss what Jean Shepard said during his nightly all night show and listen to the tunes spun by Pear Shape.

If you like riff jump music, you'll find this album outstanding. Green on trombone wails like so many of the jump tenors of his era. And you'll hear early Charlie Rouse (before he joined Monk) who reminds me in some ways of a cross between Lockjaw (without the growl) and Frank Wess.

Great swingin' album. Brings back memories.

A German language pirates of Penzance.......2007-06-21

A very interesting piece. A lot of fun. The German version of pirates got my G&S hating friend all excited about the music. The voices are wonderful.

The bonus tracks are really funny. People singing opera that are not usually thought of as classical singers and vice-versa. Be warned there is a somewhat ribald ditty performed by Pinza. Well worth the price.

Nice little cd, 30 plus minutes.

My big question, is, why has his Soul Surfing album never come to cd. His "More" was a massive hit in the early 60's.
