5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Pops Goes the 4th!.......2006-12-02

This is a great CD for any fan of the Boston Pops - especially those who have seen or been to their annual 4th of July performance - or for those who appreciate patriotic music. Many of the pieces they play at the Pops Goes the 4th concert are on the CD. My personal favorite is the 1812 Overture for its live cannons.

5 out of 5 stars buy this for nancy only.......1999-09-02

i bought this album because i love jazz and because i love nancy wilson. if you want to hear some great big band jazz music, try the classic stuff -- ellington, basie, ray, wilson (gerald, that is); the jazzy performance of the pops orchestra is not anything to write home about. nancy, however, does it again. she shines on her performances here, especially "i can't get started" -- although, she may have been outmatched during the scatting session on "it don't mean a thing." if you like to get your hand on anything nancy sings, then buy this album. also, i imagine this album will appeal to true fans of the boston pops....

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Nancy.......1999-08-30

Thank you Nancy for finally recording standards again! Nancy Wilson breathes life into 3 old standards, I Can't Get Started, It Don't Mean a Thing, and Imagination, as hardly any singers can nowadays. This is clearly the kind of music her voice was made to sing.

2 out of 5 stars I HAD HIGH HOPES FOR THIS CD, BUT..........1999-04-02

OVER THE YEARS I HAVE BEEN HIGHLY ENTERTAINED BY THE BOSTON POPS ORCHESTRA. THIS TIME WITH THIS CD WAS A LITTLE DIFFERENT. ON FIRST LOOKILNG AT THE VARIOUS TRACKS OF THIS CD I WAS EXCITED. IT LOOKED LIKE IT MIGHT BE A GREAT CD. AFTER PURCHASING THIS CD AND PLAYING IT I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. THE ARRANGEMENTS DID NOT SEEM TO BE MASTERFUL. OUT OF 15 SONGS ALL I COULD FIND WAS 6 SONGS I TRULEY LIKED. I KNOW IT MUST HARD TO ALWALYS DEVELOP A GOOD PROJECT.

4 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19

This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Classic collection of early hollywood history.......2007-07-16

Never thought I could ever find a collection like this. Buy this one over the later (1995) released "Beau Hunks play more Little Rascals hits"....but get both if possible. 2nd CD has dupicates from 1st CD...but also has quite a few little known tunes than the first.

First heard this CD in 1997 when visiting Disney World. It was playing in one of their gift shops...and had to ask the cashier to show me the cover to find out who it was.

Amazing job by these musicians....but the credit all goes to Leroy Shields...the original composer of these tunes.

You will definately enjoy this collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Good Old Days.......2007-03-02

Do you ever hear a song and associate it distinctly with a particular movie or occurance? There is nothing like music to bring back memories, and the memories that this music brings back is always happy. Each song is rather short in length which helps the CD flow rather well. However, each one has its own distinct melody that you'll probably find yourself humming throughout your day (if you haven't already).

What is especially exciting is the booklet. It contains information about the usage of each song in The Little Rascals and other Hal Roach comedies, especially the Laurel and Hardy films. There are many photographs as well.

This is an excellent piece for any fan of the Rascals and nostalgia. All of the tracks are instrumental and faithfully reconstructed. It is equally enjoyable to listen concentratedly or to play the CD as background music.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME JOB!!.......2005-12-19

Buy this one before it is out of stock! Purchased it for $50 & worth every penny! Compliments ON WITH THE SHOW with new tunes in each, so you will not get a same tune in neither,so many sound bites they could have done a 3rd CD! Beau Hunks have done another flawless job! MUST BUY! Will create fond memories of those wonderful innocent times. Brian Wilson of the BEACH BOYS loved this CD!!!Plus, the booklet designating where the tunes originated & history of Leroy Shields plus pics of those films!! Worth the price!!

5 out of 5 stars Time Travel IS Possible.......2003-08-05

This is one terrific album for anyone who likes movie music, old comedies, or just tuneful tunes from a long-ago time. You can almost smell the popcorn. Why anyone would go to all this work to recreate these songs is completely beyond me, but I'm delighted they did.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be seven years old again..........2002-12-06

if you grew up watching the Little Rascals, this cd will take you back to sitting in front of the tv ("Move back or you'll go blind!")when you were little. The Beau Hunks are absolutely astounding in their recreation of Leroy Shield's compositions. As it says in the liner notes, they achieve "note for note accuracy". If you don't have this cd, find it and buy it. You won't regret it.

        5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've *EVER*heard.......1999-08-27

This is the most amazing score of any musical, except maybe for some Sondheim masterpieces. The music is so emotional, so strong, so pure... it's a work of art. Ahrens and Flaherty's songs are amazing, and the voices and talents of the cast are breathtaking. I would reccommend this CD to anyone, musical theater buffs and pop-music people alike. It has soul, heart, rhythm, and style.

        5 out of 5 stars A classic.......1998-06-16

The themes of the story play out in its music, from the night sea journey in the beginning through the message of hope through change at the end. For women, black people, immigrants, technology, the law, politics -- too many aspects of life to take in, change was the standard at the beginning of this century. Yet the universal constants remain: love, hope and kindness, as well as cruelty, ignorance and indifference. The music is true to the spirit of the characters singing it, and what characters! Heartily recommended -- I found my theme song here, and you may, too.
