Editorial Reviews
By the mid-'90s, trumpeter Mark Isham didn't need to make another solo album. After all, his artistic reputation--and financial security--had already been assured by his work as a film and television composer. He had won Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy nominations for his scores, as well as ongoing critical." Somehow, though, it wasn't enough--he "wanted a vehicle where I could realize my own artistic vision." That vehicle is Blue Sun, Isham's first solo album in four years and the first straight-ahead, acoustic jazz album of his career. He recorded it with the jazz quintet he has led in Los Angeles in recent years (pianist David Goldblatt, saxophonist Steve Tavaglione, bassist Doug Lunn and drummer Kurt Wortman) and that's the band he brings to this project, which mirrors his lifelong admiration for Miles Davis. Isham's Blue Sun does have the understated romanticism of "Kind of Blue," especially in the leader's muted-trumpet smears and in pianist David Goldblatt's space-filled broken chords. The most obvious tribute comes on "And Miles to Go... Before He Sleeps," a ballad tribute to Davis featuring Isham's languid trumpet lines. --Geoffrey Himes

The ninth career release from 2002 (the husband-wife team of Randy and Pamela Copus) is a sight-and-sound combo that includes a DVD gallery of splendid underwater photography (with the duo's music lending a dreamy, state-of-wonder audio backdrop) and a separate, music-only CD. The DVD, which slowly pans across dozens of colorful, otherworldly stills captured by unheralded photographer Susan Saibara, can provide some head-turning wallpaper for a computer screen or a wide-screen flat-panel monitor. The music, meanwhile, is a pleasant enough endeavor, though after a while it becomes apparent the duo has stirred an excess of stardust into these compositions. At their best, 2002 have used their soft, ethereal blend of electronics, acoustic guitar, flute, pennywhistle, and Pamela Copus's Enya-clone voicings to venture out (though never too far out) into the safer, gentler realms of the cosmos. On this disc, after an inviting opening track, several selections thereafter sound as though they have been touched by Tinkerbell's wand a few times too often, diminishing their stand-alone appeal. Pretty music, yes; but perhaps because it exists here principally to embellish many delicate visual images, it seems a bit too pretty on occasion. --Terry WoodAlbum Description

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

This Nashville band may have lifted its name from the lyrics of a Led Zeppelin song but listeners expecting nine-minute guitar epics about medieval orgies and fiery demons are bound to be disappointed. Blue Merle favors a lighter touch, as sketched out on the wistful title track of its debut album, Burning In The Sun. The jangly song evokes the Dave Matthews Band with its lilting fiddles and spiraling rhythms, while singer-songwriter Luke Reynolds sounds like a dead ringer for Coldplay's Chris Martin. Having played Bonnaroo, toured with Donovan Frankenreiter and recoded with Matthews producer Stephen Haris, the band seems destined to find a home with the Relix crowd. It would be a shame if it settled there. Rich, emotionally detailed songs like "If I Could" and "Stay" not only transcend genres, they're capable of changing lives. -- Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

Spare me the Coldplay comparisons!.......2006-01-05
Sure you can compare the sound of Luke's voice to Chris Martin's but, that's where it ends. The vocal style is not the same and the songs are not even close to being similar. Blue Merle has roots in rock, country, and bluegrass. The only bluegrass COLDPLAY ever saw was on a trip to Denmark.
If you folks making the Coldplay comparison knew half as much as you think you do about music you still couldn't fill a thimble.
This is a great CD of songs that I'll be enjoying for sometime.

Blue Sun by Mark Isham.......2006-11-03
Isham's playing is close to that of Davis and his search for the ultimate tone. For any fan of horn playing, this album is a must.
My first Mark Isham cd.. you ask where was I?.......2006-07-02
Im 42 yo and this is the first time I hear an album of Mark Isham, this is music to relax and to think, not the type of relax you expect from new-age or that type of music..this is the music to watch Edward Hopper paintings and ponder on the subtle levity of existence
Rewards the attention to details that comes from really listening.......2005-12-14
Mr. Isham moves through the jazz landscape deftly, adding some flourishes here and there that are clearly modern, but the overall sound is that of a classic jazz quintet drawing on electric bass, acoustic and electric piano, drums, and tenor sax to coax and compel listeners to keep their ears open. It would be a mistake to relegate this recording to the role of background music, for it should not be considered part of the "lite" or triple-z jazz (as in snoozzze) that infests FM radio and department stores. "Blue Sun" rewards the attention to details that comes from really listening.
On the Really Short List of FAVORITE Jazz CDs. . . ........2002-10-01
Where he really slays me, though, is on "In a Sentimental Mood," track 8. I don't think anyone, living or dead, could wring any more emotion and "sentiment" out of a melody than Isham does on this piece. Ohhhh. It's almost exhausting to listen to, but somehow I don't feel exhausted when it's done--I feel refreshed and invigorated. He's done all the work--I just need to slow down and listen. . . . Really nice keyboard work underneath and behind the melody--very understated and appropriate. I don't know how a person could listen to Isham on this track and not run out and buy the CD. Even if you hated the rest, which would be virtually impossible, it would be worth the asking price for this 7+ minute experience.
Bottom Line: Whether or not he's the next coming of Miles or just another chump blowing on a trumpet, Mark Isham has captured something very special on this CD. It isn't on his earlier ones, and I haven't heard it on his more recent ones, although I love those, as well. He is garnering some attention as a film scorer, which is great--his scores are excellent--but he can't capture this . . . essence . . . in a film score. This is a very intimate, personal, understated, and reflective effort from Isham. Everyone deserves to experience this hour. . . .
Overlooked Warm Jazz classic.......2002-07-16
It's is an overlooked classic! Great lyrical, meditative music, warm and laid back. There is a warm tone to it, I would call it "Red Sun" or "Orange Sun" I think if I had named it, the name "Blue Sun" sounds a little too cool, unless it's an oblique reference to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue".
Usually this music sounds improvisational, but occasionally it sounds a little scripted, but that's a minor criticism, the overall effect is pleasant and laid back. He has the tone down perfectly, with the Harmon mute. As is stated below, the sound is often quite reminiscent of Miles Davis pre-1965 period. Listen to "Round Midnight" by Davis, then listen to this!
I consider this a great find, I find myself returning to listen over and over late at night. Don't miss this one.
Well recorded. Five stars for recording, 4 1/2 for performance, if it were a better seller, it would deserve 5 stars under my tough grading system!
Improves with repeated listening. Highly recommended. Buy this album.

By now, it's a moot point whether Cassandra Wilson is singing jazz or not. By unifying what were once considered disparate styles and song forms with her languorously rich vocals and offbeat instrumental textures, she has become the queen of her own genre. Largely recorded at a one-time train station in her native Mississippi, Belly of the Sun ranges from country-blues great Fred McDowell's gritty "You Gotta Move" (popularized by the Rolling Stones and here featuring acoustic-guitar wiz Richard Johnston) to Brazilian immortal Antonio Carlos Jobim's winsome "Waters of March" (featuring a children's choir) to a hauntingly feminized version of Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman." Revealing her command of narrative material, Wilson draws seductive meaning from Bob Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm" and the Band's "The Weight." Featuring Kevin Breit and Marvin Sewell on all manner of guitars and related string instruments, Belly of the Sun also boasts three strong Wilson originals, including "Just Another Parade," a jazzy-soulful duet with India Arie, and "Show Me a Love." As her own producer, Wilson comes up with less compelling backgrounds than Craig Street, who produced her darker-tinged breakthrough albums. Still, this is her most seamless, smoothest-flowing, and most effortlessly expansive recording. "I need to feel some rich black soil that's moist between my toes," she sings. You can feel her Southern roots in the grooves as well. --Lloyd SachsAlbum Description
Belly of The Sun, her fourth release for Blue Note Records, is the classic Cassandra Wilson journey, where borders and boundaries are sometimes pushed, sometimes expanded, sometimes eliminated but always discounted as limitations. Embracing Blues, African, Jazz, R&B, Brazilian and pop sensibilities, Belly of the Sun, is an invitation into the many sounds that have filtered through the musical landscape of the South. Featuring both original material and startling interpretations of material by other songwriters such as The Band, Bob Dylan and Robert Johnson, Belly of The Sun is full of the power of Cassandra's Mississippi roots and the roots of American music.Customer Reviews:

A Delta Delight.....The Journey Continues.......2003-01-14
Regardless of what genre this CD falls under, and lets be realistic,Ms Wilson slices through a number of them in expressing herself musically here, this is a standout collection in 2002..or any other year for that matter. She can't be pigeoned -holed,she just entertains and continues to grow as a top notch vocalist.
Conceived in the tradition of the Mississippi blues and supplemented with jazz and R&B influences, then executed in the heat of August in a disused railway station and boxcar, punctuated with that percussive beat and maverick style, relying on that midnight and beyond voice..and given wings by a choice of self penned or covered classics of all styles....Ms Wilson has excelled in producing her most accessible collection to date.
Noted for her experimental and sparse percussive sounds, she has crafted, lovingly, with the help of friends, interpretations of classic songs from classic songwriters, that benefit from some deft production that has made a truely memorable CD.the result is personal and infectious!!
The songs chosen,Dylan,Robertson,Webb,Taylor, were not easy, but an artist of her growing maturity delivered, with warts and all, that turned this catalogue into something memorable.*The Weight*,a classic Robertson song interpreted in the Wilson style..which cannot be catagorized save to say that it is unique and bluesy.Personal favourites, such as Mississippi Fred McDowell's *You Got To Move*,from the delta roots, have you joyfully clapping your hands and singing like its Sunday morning at church..a faithful and substantial rendition.Dylan never sounded like this,as *Shelter From The Storm*,a classic fragment song from the monumental*Blood On The Tracks*,is brought to life and a narrative is brought to life, as delivered by Ms Wilson..a personal favourite of mine, worth the purchase price alone.
Playful jazzy bluesy latin and bosa nova renditions that surely must please all who listen, set tracks such *Drunk As Cooter Brown*,*Hot Tamales*and Only A Dream In Rio*up as highlights.
Ms Wilson drifts from style to style, genre to genre, and yet the songs are tightly delivered. So much so that novices like Norah Jones, who have attempted to encompass *it all*, must blush with envy.Long time friend Rhonda Richmond (who pens *Road So Clear*,and, sings, plays piano and violin on this set)compliments her friend beautifully. The excellence from longtime association is very self-evident.
The inclusion of the India Arie duet,*Just Another Parade*,penned by Ms Wilson continues to highlight her abilities as the standout *Jazz, and yet not Jazz*performer status.
*Wichita Lineman*,although an honest interpretation, does not do the Webb classic justice, but continues to highlight the willingness of the artist to push the boundaries further. This is really a pedantic point,as the overall excellence of this CD cannot be escaped.
It would be amiss of any review not to acknowledge the engine room in any Wilson CD,the drums of Xavyon Jamison, the percusive brilliance of Cyro Bapista,Jeffery Haynes, and the guitar playing of anything stringed by Marvin Sewell.Mark Peterson and Kevin Breit, are all excellent and make that*Wilson sound*.Throw in Robert Johnston India Arie and Rhonda Richmond..and the mix is pure Delta gumbo.
In a year when the scene was swamped by jazz R&B rap and pop divas promising to be the *next big thing* and delivering more of the*same old thing*,in blows the unique and talented Ms Wilson like a Gulf breeze and just knocks them dead. Not jazz but music with feeling..adult and rewarding.5 stars because of the mixture of maverick delights,...will be continually played. So much talent on display,Buy it!!!

Jesse Harris will probably always be best known as Norah Jones's favorite songwriterhe wrote five songs on Come Away With Me, including "Don't Know Why"--but he's also an able recording artist himself. Many of the 12 songs on his fourth album with the Fernandos, The Secret Sun, are built on a foundation of acoustic guitar--his and that of ex-Lounge Lizard Tony Scherr (who also plays electric guitar throughout). These two are abetted by a particularly supple rhythm section--bassist Tim Luntzel and Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits, Bill Frisell). Similar to Jones's work, there's an understated elegance to these songs, and the band is clearly comfortable with bluesy pop, country rock, singer-songwriter ballads, and even traditional folk (the album's one cover, "Roberta"). Jones appears on one song, the duet "What Makes You," but it's not even the best song here. That honor could go to the pre-rock classic pop grace of "How?" an intricate guitar-and-marimba workout "The Midnight Bell," or the album-closing stunner, "You, the Queen," a jazzy love song full of longing, regret, and hope. Clearly, Harris doesn't have a voice that comes close to matching Jones's, but The Secret Sun is full of good songs played tastefully--a combination that deserves to be applauded. --Keith MoererCustomer Reviews:

After several recordings of American popular music, Te Kanawa has become a very effective crooner, phrasing with heretofore missing panache. The easy, jazzy Riddle-like arrangements are bouncy and appealing. But after 15 selections, the mysterious dissatisfaction of eating Chinese food and feeling hungry an hour later remains. Tunick writes in his program notes that "the waltz ballads ... are poignant and moving, but never stray into sentimentality." But why not? A little mushiness would serve this recording well, and also contribute to a desperately lacking variety of interpretation. Still, the voice is consistently gorgeous; it would just be nice to distinguish the happy songs from the sad. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:

And I've heard many of them, and I love their work.
But Kiri Te Kanawa is different. She was given one of the most beautiful instruments in the history of sound recordings. Thank God the recording companies figured out what they had and put her in front of a microphone early and often.
We have had a rare opportunity to experience a great artist from almost the start of her career clear through to what now must be it's final stages.
I, for one, feel privileged.
Thank you, Dame Kiri. The world is a little better place because of you.

Andy Dragazis, a.k.a. Blue States, has finally hit U.S. shores with the domestic release of his debut LP. As one of the rare records that actually overshadows its own hype, Nothing Changes Under the Sun proves itself to be deeper, more diverse, and mind-alteringly greater than even the notoriously hyperbolic English music press claim it is. Plenty of tracks ("The Trainer Shuffle", "Stereo 99", "Spit and Soar") carry the summer bliss vibe to which the album's title alludes, but Dragazis has delivered something far greater than a beach holiday soundtrack. Muscular, jazzy, live-instrument workouts such as "Looking Glass" and "Theme from Within" saunter deep within the estimable realm of a David Holmes or Thievery Corporation. "Diamente" and "Heroes' Elegy" give a slight gild to a page or two of Portishead's book of rainy-day beats. It is "Elios Therepia," however, riding a Roy Rogers-style tune out into the great wide open, that is perhaps the most apt metaphor for the entire record. While most downbeat recordings seem to be about navel-gazing stasis, Nothing Changes Under the Sun is all about travel beyond ordinary borders. Book your ticket for the inner sphere now. --Bob MichaelsCustomer Reviews:
