Editorial Reviews
In his brief career from the mid-'40s to his death in 1955, tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray was one of the essential voices in jazz, an avatar of bop who recorded with musicians from Benny Goodman to Charlie Parker, Ivory Joe Hunter to Billy Eckstine. The second volume of Gray's recordings for Prestige begins with the complete results of a 1950 Detroit recording session, the numerous alternate takes demonstrating the tenor saxophonist's fluent invention on blue changes on "Grayhound" and "Treadin'." Gray had a significant impact on the West Coast bop and cool-jazz scenes, evident here in a strong Los Angeles studio session with trumpeter Art Farmer and Hampton Hawes. It includes memorable originals by the two, Farmer's Market" and "Jackie" respectively, as well as Gray's muscular renditions of the standards "Sweet and Lovely" and "Lover Man." The final tracks are extended live versions of two bop anthems, Parker's "Scrapple from the Apple" and Denzil Best's "Move." They're fine samples of the heat of bop at its most combustible, with additional fire from altoist Sonny Criss and Gray's frequent partner, fellow tenorist Dexter Gordon. --Stuart Broomer

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.Customer Reviews:

Fall in, funketeers: the first soundtrack to "Class of 3000," the Cartoon Network show executive-produced by Andre 3000 of OutKast, mashes up a melange of beats and styles so beautifully conceived, so inner-city cool, that parents who once grooved to the "Fat Albert" gang will find themselves in thrall (cartoons able to make the grade with school-age kids while putting across a message happen once every 30 years, apparently). Here we have the whole "3000" crew cutting up to Andre, a.k.a. Sunny Bridges', whip-smart concoctions--Li'l D, Kim and Kam, Tamika, Madison, Philly Phil, and Edward trade the spotlight on weird but wickedly fun tracks like "Banana Zoo," "Oh Peanut," and "We Want Your Soul." The messages seep through, but in the end the grooves matter most. Future funkers of America, take note. And tune in immediately. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description

Amazon.com essential recording
The three-volume Good Vibrations series is designed with the hits-hungry fan in mind. Eschewing a strict chronological approach, the best-of sets are arranged according to charting position. Thus the initial collection is laden with the group's trademark tunes, ranging from the California boys' first top 10 charter, 1962's "Surfin' Safari," to their last, 1988's "Kokomo," a stray, post-Brian Wilson success. "Kokomo" is by far the newest selection included here; nothing else dates past 1966's No. 1 smash, "Good Vibrations." With the likes of "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "California Girls," and the incandescent "God Only Knows" rounding out the set, Greatest Hits Volume 1 is the ideal first pick for anyone looking for the Beach Boys at their commercial peak. --Steven StolderAmazon.com

At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short and playing it safe for the trappings of fame, Stewart revisits the font of his latest career revival here. But while 2002's It Had To Be You at least turned on the novelty of hearing raspy Rod the Mod tackle a slate of American pop standards with a boozy, world-weary tone that sometimes reinforced the originals' intent with trans-generational flair, the British rock icon unfortunately reverted to form a year later on this 14-track sequel. Set against the laconic, cocktail-friendly productions of vets Richard Perry and Phil Ramone, Stewart's performances seem strangely detached throughout. Even when offered the chance at some real human interaction on a pair of ill-conceived duets with Cher (who at least attempts to bring some dramatic flair to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered") and Queen Latifah (whose recent turn in Chicago informs the title track), Stewart seems almost blissfully unaware of their presence. These are songs that virtually demand to be acted out, not phoned in. Brilliant vocal performances often reinforce the notion of "the singer, not the song;" here that old adage sounds more like a suggestion of where to place the blame for this album's disappointments. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Produced again by luminaries Richard Perry, Phil Ramone and Clive Davis, Volume II consists of 14 all-timers such as "I'm In The Mood For Love," "Smile," "As Time Goes By," "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "Til' There Was You," and a delicious duet with Cher on "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," with the almost-never-heard original sexy lyrics.Customer Reviews:

Fashion be damned: Pop culture is just one big Hometown Buffet for writer-director Quentin Tarantino. Nowhere has that sensibility been more apparent than on his hand-picked soundtrack choices, and this oft tongue-in-cheek tale of a female assassin's revenge (his first film in six years) is no exception. With dizzy, almost palpable glee, Tarantino evokes the international hall-of-mirrors influences that energize martial arts films and much of Asian pop culture in general. Thus the hip-hop of Wu Tang's RZA (who, along with composer Charles Bernstein, concocts what passes for the score's traditional cues) somehow finds itself but one ingredient in a heady souffle that includes vintage TV and film cue rarities (Al Hirt's main title from The Green Hornet, Bernard Herrmann's haunting theme from Twisted Nerve, the spaghetti western melodrama of Luis Bacalov's "The Grand Duel," Isaac Hayes in full blaxploitation mode on "Run Fay Run"), Charlie Feathers' vintage rockabilly and a pan-kitsch sensibility that encompasses Zamfir, Nancy Sinatra's angst-in-the-pants take "Bang, Bang" and Santa Esmeralda's disco-era workout of "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Tarantino's contemporary Japan-Pop selections are no less giddy, ranging from Meiko Kaji's sultry "Flower of Carnage" to The 5.6.7.8's loopy "Woo Hoo." It's everything we've come to expect from a Tarantino score (including dialog excerpts and a few sound fx stingers), with a madcap trip around the pop music world thrown in for good measure. -- Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Disappointing.......2007-05-26
Unfortunately I was terribly disappointed to discover that the version presented here is a very short 2 minute and 55 second version, without the introductory chant. Luckily the version of Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata" presented here was also one I wanted for my collection, but that's a lot to pay for one song.
As for the other sings on the disk- a few are winner, most are forgettable, and one- "Papa Joe's"- was incredibly annoying when I originally heard it on the radio, and time has not changed my opinion!

Great vocal warmup, especially of breath control, with unique syllabic exercises!.......2007-06-17
common popular exercises have failed to achieve. The breath control exercises especially have been an enormous help, and my students find them
not only challenging but fun as well. The warmup exercises are a little unique, bringing in tweet, hweet, and unique ways to improve sound production with exercises that combine air production with compression against the lips and teeth. The exercises as a whole help students with the lower register as well as the upper, and effectively improve power without yelling. A great program, I highly recommend!

Practical.......2006-09-09
This cd starts very simple with the first few tracks asking the listener to identify if two notes are higher, lower or the same. Then it proceeds to identifying if a voice part sung after a vocal part is the same or different. These ear exercises are direct and to the point and really do help. Don't worry, you start singing soon enough.
Solfedge is explained in a concise manner so if you don't know it you will, and if you do your money hasn't been spent on more than a few minutes of review.
The singing starts with Do Mi Sol Mi Dos. I'm a baritone and the singer I would guess is a soprano. Problem? Actually, the beneift was I had to focus and identify the same note a few octaves down. This extra "lesson" on my own is an unintended plus.
Major, minor, augmented and diminished chords are practiced. Your ear will improve and you will hear the chords sung more in songs after getting this down.
I've been using it on my drive to work in the mornings. I have had the cd a few weeks and am just reaching tracks 18 and 19 with confidence. Sometimes Ariella Vaccarino sings quite fast as the exercise proceeds. Simply hit the back button and start at the slower part at the beginning of the track.
It really is great to have this in the car or home as I am getting more out of my weekly voice lessons. Add to that, I don't have to play the piano myself. I can stand in front of the mirror and focus on posture.
This brings me back to cd 1. Though my breathing needs work, a weekly lesson and the time I spent with cd 1 before trying this out helps me recognize when I have tension in my throat or am not controlling my breath.
Why is this alone not enough? There is no way the cd can tell you you are leaning too far back and squeezing your lungs, give you a sense of how to raise your soft pallate or make sure to cover every point such as men usually jump straight from chest voice to falsetto at first while women have more of a gradual mid voice.
When I give this cd 5 stars it means for 15 dollars you are getting a product with no fluff that is the perfect compliment to some type of training. Even if the training is just a few lessons to get you started. You'll get out of it what you put into it.
