An American Picnic.......2002-08-11
I have three of the Dinner Classics. "Dinner For Two" "Romance"
and "A Cocktail Party" All are wonderful cd's and I would like to find more, other than what is listed here. "An American Picnic" is good but I like "Dinner For Two" the best.
Worth It.......1999-11-29
This album is one of the "must haves" in the great "Masterworks Dinner Classics" series. Beautiful!

Best for Song Selection.......2006-12-08
The virtue of this album is that it provides the only CD version of the title track from JJW's Contrary to Ordinary LP (MCA, 1978). Although that album was bland overall, the title track was a beautiful, pensive gem. Walker is best recognized for his rockin' live numbers, but he's also recorded some fine ballads. My personal favorite of all his songs is just such a number: "Leavin' Texas," from the live album A Man Must Carry On, Vol. 1. That's also the best, in my opinion, of his numerous live albums. It's got an excellent song list. The one on this album is better, though. This is the only JJW collection on CD that includes "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother," "London Homesick Blues," "Mr. Bojangles" and "L.A. Freeway"--all seminal hits. And there are a number of other very good songs, like "Ro-deo-deo Cowboy" and of course "Sangria Wine." There really are no bad moments on this album. The problem is that his delivery is a bit tepid--not for Wayne Newton perhaps (I don't actually know anything about Mr. Newton) but for a party guy like JJW? Yes. Still, this may be a decent pickup for someone who wants a good survey of his material. It's a perfectly competent album. But then you have to go out and buy the far more rousing Viva Terlingua or A Man, V.1.
ODE TO THE FLY-BY-NIGHT LOUNGE.......2006-06-22
Sometimes you just need some old-fashioned rock and rolling, comboy style. That is the roots too. If you, like I do, every once in a while need to hear about whiskey bars, fly-by-night hotels, pool playing hustlers, sad-eyed gals, flossies, no-name susies, broken-down cowboys, low down hotels nighttimes smells, guys saying what the hell at the last chance motel you have come to the right address. Listen on.
REAL LIVE!.......2003-02-02
There's millions of albums in the world under a title "live" but they usually lack the real live feel and that's why they are mostly disappointments to me... but this here's an exception! Hats off to Jerry Jeff again, he hasn't try to make this sound too polished and slick by destroying the sound of space. Yes, it first sounds quite a rough, to say, a field recording, but that's what makes it so charming... it sounds like you were there at the place listening to a Jerry Jeff gig in some lousy joint drinking beer and having fun with the band... It sounds really dynamic and rocks on through the show! I'm sure this album's never got any airplay and maybe never will, but it's a document, honest and true, just like Jerry Jeff and his trio of old mates...:-)
I recommend this one to everybody who's interested to hear music just the way it's played, without too many studio effects... I've played this record to a bunch of friends and everybody, regardless of their musical tastes or if they know J.J. or not, has loved it just for its fantastic natural feeling...
Disappointing.......2001-01-09
This is a disappointing live set from the patriarch of the Texas musis scene. Night After Night lacks the spark of earlier live releases from Jerry. I would recommend both Live at Gruene Hall and Viva Luckenbach! over Night After Night.
JJW Live! There are other ways?.......1999-12-30
JJW and the Gonzo Compadres in club mode. Believe me, not a bad thing. It's pretty simple. Crack open a cold one and crank it up! Those of you who follow his Gonzoness will enjoy it , and those that don't will become fans or be slung off the planet by that darn centrifugal force you've heard so much about.

Truncated.......2007-02-19
I have only one objection to this album. She sings only 2 choruses of "To Keep My Love Alive" while the orchestra keeps playing the music over and over. A lyric like that, and they play just the music! There was plenty of time to put the whole lyric in. "If I Were You" (an imitated idea, most notably to my mind by Adams & Strouse in "All American") is a knock-out, and on this one she sings both verses (there is only one chorus). Highly recommended (if you can find it) anyway. "To Keep..." can be heard in it's entirety on other recordings, like on the revival cast recording of "Connecticut Yankee" by Vivienne Segal (on 2 releases!). Now if someone would just record the complete lyrics of "Mt. Greenery" and "Manhattan" - for a change!
a hidden classic.......2006-10-07
Von Stade is in very fine voice on this CD, and her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is one of the best ever, with a rich, expressive delivery. Her voice has sometimes been considered too operatic for pop material but on this she's just right. Other standouts are "Moon Of My Delight" and the playful "To Keep My Love Alive" but the whole album is solid.
Wonderful record.......2002-11-11
A wonderful record !! Mrs. Von Stade's voice is perfect. I also raccomend this recond because all the arrengments are recreations from the original shows.
exquisite album.......2000-11-10
Contained in this CD are some of the most beautiful versions of the great timeless songs of Rogers and Hart. Coductor John McGlinn's orchestrations are flawless, as are Frederica's vocals. My favorites are 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was', 'My Funny Valentine', 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered', 'Atlantic Blues' and 'A Ship Without a Sail'. Every song is well done and everyone I have turned on to this album loves it.

Customer Reviews:
Let theyself be hereby dubbed.........Best Broadway Tune Vocalist..........2007-06-21
Of my dozens and dozens of Broadway music performances, I find only one singer can be dubbed "Best." That person, Thomas Hampson, is thee. While show performers and ballad singers have all had their way with these tunes, only one is across-the-board great in them.
And whether or not these are the "best" representative songs of Porter is a moot point, something entirely up to personal taste. The point is that these songs have not been better performed by an individual male singer. It certainly doesn't hurt, either, that the great John McGlinn was on board as conductor/director (and likely strongly involved in arranging).
****
This isn't a vanity crossover project but Cole Porter with art and style.......2006-07-17
The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.
But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are also some bigger songs, such as "It Was Written in the Stars," where Hampson can unleash his voice at full force, a thrilling experience. I don't think there's been an opera star who's made a Cole Porter recording other than Kiri Te Kanawa, in forty years. This is a very enjoyable one indeed.
pure self indulgent garbage.......2006-04-22
SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THOMAS HAMPSON, BEFORE HE HURTS HIMSELF...OR HURTS THE REST OF US....What a collective piece of trash this album is?..is there a more self-important, bloated, indulgent, precious, affected, pompous singer on the planet?...i am waiting for Thomas Hampson sings Disco...or Thomas Hampson sings Elton John...or Thomas Hampson does Eminem?...he probably thinks he could pull 'em off...what unmitigated gaul...don't waste your money here
Thank god, no astaire or kelly singing on this one.......2001-04-30
This was a great listen and it was finally nice to hear trained singers doing Porter. Can't stand it when I hear a lilting Porter song in an MGM film and then Astaire or Gene Kelly decide to try and sing it, usually off key, and end up slaughtering the number. Great to hear some of the old stuff and different takes on other standards.
Cole must have been watching over this project.......2000-09-06
John McGlinn's orchestrations on this compilation of Cole Porter tunes have as much to do with the brilliance of this CD as Mr Hampson's vocal renderings. Both have that lush sound that make a Porter tune sound like what this reviewer believes Porter would have appreciated, judging by his own versions of his songs, and the arrangements that he was involved in. McGlinn remained faithful to those original arrangements and added a few of his own ideas and along with modern day recording improvements produced a sound that I think Porter would very much approve of. My only complaint is the selection of songs, but that as always comes down to personal taste. However in doing so I was tuned into a few songs that I had never heard before, some of which are now among my favorite Porter songs. Specifically, 'Who said Gay Paree' is a sublime version of a lesser known Porter tune. It is one of his tunes about Paris but unlike the others its a sad tune of love lost with McGlinn and Hampson both at their finest. Another one new to me was'My Cozy Little Corner In the Ritz' an early Porter tune with him at his sarcastic best and a brilliant rendition. The standards are all briliantly done. 'In the Still of the Night' is my favorite, followed by I Concentrate on You', 'Easy To Love', 'Night and Day' (edging out Sinara's version, but not quite as magical as Fred Astaire's from the movie 'Gay Divorcee', but close) 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is divine, Begin the Beguine and 'Don't Fence me in'. All the others are great versions but none would make my top 50 Porter tunes. With the convenience of tracking with CD's though I program my favorites in and hear an hour of heavenly music from one of my favorite tunesmiths as interpreted by two contemporary masters of our time.

Greeted with shock and amazement upon its original release in 1970, this two-CD collection featuring virtuoso Natalie Hinderas on piano is one of the best collections of music by African American composers of the 20th century. Hinderas's catholic approach to the century's music allows her to delight the Chopin-Ravel-Joplin continuum (wide though it is) of listeners with R. Nathaniel Dett's impressionistic, ragtimey "In the Bottoms." The nuanced jumpiness, replete with dissonant shades, of William Grant Still's "Three Visions" recalls Ives here and Ellington there. What's most challenging here is the works from 1953 to 1969, featuring Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker's study of harmonic intervals in his Sonata No. 1 and Talib Rasul-Hakim's shimmering "Sound-Gone." There are tone-row studies (Arthur Cunningham) and Stockhausen-esque electronics (Olly Wilson), but what stands out most is Hinderas's unflappable perfection regardless of the musical elements. Whether razor-sharp or dancingly playful, Hinderas executes with a largely vibrato-free touch, forcing the ear to focus on her solid chordal touch. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:
below average voice and interpretation; admirable program.......1999-09-29
Pilgrim's voice is without expression or feeling, and unfortunately, is with excessive and unstable vibrato. The selections are wide-ranged and interesting. The program has great potential as a comprehensive resource, but it's vocal performance lacks talent, technique, and interpretation.

Customer Reviews:
Nice dark soundtrack in 1940s setting.......2000-10-15
In The Public Eye photographer Leon Bernstein or the Great Berzini is always the first at crime scenes in New York to shoot some pictures for the main newspapers. Filmed in a 1940s setting, Mark Isham uses a dark but beautiful melody, played mostly by piano, in this film. Strings and trumpet play also a major role. Isham knows exactly how to create the feeling for the "dark brown" New York in the 1940s with the Italian mob chasing each other and the jazzy pubs where the sigar smoking high society meets each other.
