Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Powered by producer Jim Dickinson's sons Luther and Cody, this trio brings the hard-driving Mississippi hill-country style of blues-boogie to the jam-band generation. What's amazing is how they are able to stay true to the spirit of the blues perfected by idols (and neighbors) such as Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside while advancing the style in fresh and thrilling ways. --Marc Greilsamer

Amazon.com

What is the sound of one blues exploding? It is the North Mississippi Allstars, one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the South in a long, long time. This is Black Flag if its members were Fred McDowell, R. L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Otha Turner. Guest stars would include Duane Allman, Captain Beefheart, and Howlin' Wolf. Luther Dickinson plays guitar like an octogenarian bluesman on his first amphetamine rush; his brother Cody drums hard, like a Keith Moon born and bred in Mississippi (their dad is famed producer/musician Jim Dickinson). Linking the two is Chris Chew, who spits out bass fat and heavy. Their music rockets from the rural backwoods to the laser CD player like a jack on a jenny. Songs that evolved through the last century are given new life, ensuring their relevance to another generation. World Boogie is upon us. --Robert Gordon

5 out of 5 stars Man, this rocks!.......2006-05-11

Great music, I love the opening track, "Shake 'em on down".

Good stuff here, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars buy this now.......2006-03-03

This record really is great. No joke. Not only can these guys play, but they really write catchy songs too. They are unique and blend classic rock and funk sensibilities with their bluegrass tunes. Definately worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Live.......2006-01-20

If you ever have a chance to see the North Missippi AllStars live, you won't regret it. They have a style unlike any. The cd does not do their talent justice. It's something that must be seen.

3 out of 5 stars sorry. It is not the real thing........2005-12-02

It is obvious these guys love the blues and are committed to playing it. But it is not enough. All one has to do is listen to Mcdowell's Shake'em on Down after listening to the version in this album. Or listen to Otha Turner's great music... Playing fast and loud is not a substitute to the real emotional and rhythmic depth that existed in the original recordings. It is a nice album to play in a party - but for me, at least - it is not real blues. Real blues "is a feeling" like Otis span said. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Upgraded blues..........2004-12-14

This is a hot album. It's blues for today. I would describe their sound as a blend of Led Zep, Allmans, ZZ Top, Little Feat, Howling Wolf molded with any of today's jam bands. Everytime I would think I had their sound figured out they would throw me a curveball. Very cool stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Feat.......2003-02-23

My main exposure to Little Feat was Waiting For Columbus -- perhaps the greatest live rock album of all time. Time Loves a Hero is another great feat. LF are definitely musician's musicians. For some strange reason, I never came across Shake Me Up earlier in my life, but a few years ago I stumbled across it in a used-record-and-tape store. Anything by LF had to be worth trying, and I was right--this work is fantastic.

Tired of the old used tape, I purchased the CD here off Amazon. In one word, this album is "versatile."

Spider's Blues - Fun story song in typical LF style.
Shake Me Up - Straighforward rock and roll.
Things Happen - An introspective tune. It's all gonna work out!
Mojo Haiku - Gripping rock funk - "in your face" ... quite dynamic w/ a great drum line.
Loved and Lied To - Catchy love-gone-wrong song w/ great slide guitar.
Don't Try So Hard - Well placed in order - ties to previous track. concept. Great vocal syntax & musical dynamics.
Boom Box Car - Another fun LF story song - Somewhat simplistic musically, but fun.
Fast and Furious - A straighforward driving rock number.
Livin' On Dreams - Musically intricate: Lots of 2/4 measures slipped in creating catchy hooks. One of my favs.
Clownin' - Fun, upbeat, and engaging, makes you wanna dance.
Down In Flames - an absolutely beautiful composition with intricate harmonies and lyrics. A golden river of music.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. If you like true musicianship with riffs and lyrics that catch and hold you, you will love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Began hitting their stride and then..........2000-07-13

...Craig Fuller left or was booted or something! While this album isn't a classic, it is a whole hill of fun and background vocalist (soon to be lead vocalist) Shaun Murphy really shines. Their roadhouse/cajun mix was really becoming infectious and it would continue with their next release. While Lowell George was not forgotten, the band seemed to becoming a little more comfortable with his absence.

3 out of 5 stars Some Quality Material.......2000-04-11

Whereas this recording is not one the same level as Let It Roll or Representing The Mambo, there plenty of snappy tunes that will get your toes tapping. Spiders Blues and Clowning have spunky rhythms that will catch your listening ear and have you saying,"Thats pretty grooving material". Mojo Haiku and Loved and Lied To feature some strong vocals by Craig Fuller. Whereas Shaun Murphy was an excellent replacement, Craig added alot to the Little Feat sound when he was on board. This collection has a nice balance of songs. I rate it 3 1/2 stars to distinguish it from the ordinary three stars in my previous reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent CD - suffered from poor promotion.......2000-03-02

The last CD from Little Feat with Craig Fuller on lead vocals. The band jokingly refers to this CD as their "stealth album". While a solid collection of classic Little Feat originals, the band's label at the time, Morgan Creek, was struggling, and subsequently got out of the music business. The band occasionally plays songs from this CD at live shows, especially "Spiders Blues" and the title cut.

    5 out of 5 stars a unique classic.......2006-04-20

these guys managed to combine rhythm and blues, county and rock'n'roll in a way that created their own sound. "Put something in the pot boy" is one of my favorites, but really there a lot of of great songs on this collection. Plus, like most of the Bear Family releases there is a real cool booklet with lots of great photos and information.

5 out of 5 stars Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight!.......2004-06-15

This is one of the greatest rockabilly bands from the fifties! Five piece band, that were mixing westeren swing with jive blues, rhythm 'n' blues and rockabilly! Very unique! This collection contains all 29 songs the group recorded between 1953 and 1959. "Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight", "Sag, Drag and Fall" are already in rockabilly hall of fame but other songs are excellent too.

5 out of 5 stars ***This Is Pure Rockabilly Heaven***.......2004-03-09

Sid King & The Five Strings are in reality a red hot early rockabilly/hillbilly boogie trio. King and his band sing and play everything from R&B, jump blues, country and hillbilly boogie, but it's essentially all realy rockabilly. Thier version of Blue Suade Shoes is exellent and also there version of Drinkin' Wine, Spo-Dee-O-Dee. This is joyous rockabilly swing that will get you gitterbuggin' and jivin' on the dance floor. This is some really fon boppin' wild music and is essential for any rockabilyl fan, this music was recorded between mid to late 50's, and the sound quality is exellent!

5 out of 5 stars King of the 9-String Guitar.......2000-11-19

How many people do you know that play a 9-string guitar? There's just one person that I know of and that's Big Joe Williams. On "Shake Your Boogie" every one of the 24 songs ring with the desparation of the Mississippi Delta, and through Big Joe's guitar and his booming, ragged voice it's evident that he lived every word he sang. Half of the songs were recorded in 1960 and the other half in 1969, and Big Joe and his guitar are in fine form on both sessions. Of the songs, most notable are "President Roosevelt", "The Death of Dr. Martin Luther King" and "Army Man In Vietnam". Big Joe's wife Mary turns in a powerful vocal turn on the track "I Want My Crown". On the more humorous side, Big Joe laments his love live (or lack thereof) on "Vitamin A Blues". Three cuts feature Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, which adds a nice compliment to Joe's driving rhythm. If you want authentic Delta blues the way it was meant to be sang and played, buy this CD. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Essence of Rock and Roll.......2006-08-03

Sid King and The Five Strings are one of the many amazing acts to come out of Texas in the 1950s (others being Long John Hunter, Johnny Carroll, David Ray, Bob Luman, etc). I'm not going to call him a model rockabilly because rockabilly is a specialist or "ghetto-monger's" term, like "punk" etc. These guys generate rock and roll in its rough, passionate purity. Like Johnny Burnette. This disc is essential - and, like everything put out by Bear Family (one of the many European companies who bought up American music and sold it back to us), high quality.
