Along with 1957's Meets the Rhythm Section, which featured Miles Davis's band behind him, 1960's Smack Up forms the cornerstone of the altoist's first classic period. As the title may or may not hint at, Pepper would soon after vanish from the scene, the result of heroin addiction and related prison terms. Buoyed by the presence of trumpeter Jack Sheldon, Pepper intently runs through six saxophonist-penned cuts (plus two alternate takes) from the books of the legendary (Benny Carter), the contemporary (Harold Land's title track, Buddy Collette, Jack Montrose, Ornette Coleman), and the obscure (Duane Tatro). His own blues "Las Cuevas de Mario" would become a staple of his mid-1970s repertoire (his second classic period). No matter what baggage he brought with him into the studio, Pepper always seemed to rise to the occasion. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Art Pepper redux.......2007-05-26

I recently added this album to my Art Pepper collection. It has some great sounds and very reminiscent of a bygone era.

5 out of 5 stars Smack Up: Perfect title.......2006-02-21

Art's second-to-last Contemporary album during the classic 1956-60 period, and it's consistently top-notch. The title track is the highlight, a real handsome Harold Land tune taken up-tempo. Jack Sheldon plays a lyrical trumpet when heard; unfortunately, he's not featured prominently here. Frank Butler's drumming is extremely inventive throughout. Pepper's playing is relaxed and imaginative, especially on the 5/4 blues LAS CUEVAS DE MARIO. Indicative of an awareness of Things To Come, Art even includes an Ornette Coleman composition in this set - TEARS INSIDE. Drug addiction was beginning to take its toll on Art's life, and it wasn't long after this date that he was busted and began a long jail term. This is an album anyone would be proud of, though.

5 out of 5 stars Middle Art.......2006-01-17

This album is a very important example of the ending part of the first section of Art's career. I own all his later box set (Galaxy, Village Vanguard, Hollywood all stars) and a lot of his earlier albums. I think this one stands clearly among the two periods even if it has been recorded at the end of the first. He was no more the impressive shining alto player who recorded Plus Eleven, Rhythmn section or Surf ride some time earlier and the one who won placed second behind Charlie Parker in a 1951 "Down beat" polls (Smack up is from 1960). Here he played already different for what I can hear and compare. Slower, with a different sound. He had a slightly different use of space and ideas. You can hear they were not in the fifties no more. you can hear that the change of decade has changed the view of things for what I am concerned. Even if its not a blue note album absolutly not that kind of sixties sound here. It is still a west coast record from Art, but even if the program is still "fifties", blues and originals but in "that fifties vein" something had already changed. It's there, in the air, you can breathe that. It is a nice album, with very strong soloing from the guys and from the always splendid Art of course. It's a transition album in a sense. When we were able to hear Pepper again he changed again and was ready for his definitive come back and affirmation in the seventies which was a splendid period for him artistically. Even if I am totally in love with his albums from the full fifties. Sonically it is a very well recorded album, unfortunatly the cover its not one of "those" fantastic covers from the fifties.

4 out of 5 stars Consistently high standard.......2005-07-27

Art is again in excellent form with "Smack Up" which was one of the last records of his first classic period. The tracks are consistently of a high standard with excellent recording quality. Highlights for me are "How Can You Lose" and "Maybe Next Year". Well worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Art's art.......2002-10-08

Many people have difficulty separating the life of the artist from the imaginative life of his work. When the life of the artist takes on mythic proportions, especially those accompanying Romantic self-destructive genius, the task of evaluating the art with any sort of objectivity is even more daunting.

To my ears, Pepper's is an engaging voice on this session, alternately lyrical and cerebral, taking a few risks but quickly retreating. He hasn't made the commitment to achieving the "emotional moment" that seemed to characterize his work after 1975, making each of his solos a kind of epiphanic quest.

Sheldon sounds bolder than ever on this recording, providing strong hints of the extroverted trumpet soloist he's become since the mid-nineties (his relative obscurity is a sad commentary not just on the music scene in general but the elitist jazz critics who declare who belongs in the church of what's happening now). Jolly is plenty nimble, but his left-hand voicings are pretty basic and his melodic lines fail to elevate the proceedings. Butler is still the world's most underrated drummer; without him, this session would have been little more than a period piece. Finally, Contemporary deserves some kind words. The miking of the individual instruments, the balance between the rhythm section and soloists, the attention to dynamic nuance (missing on the Blue Note recordings of this period) all contribute to a sound that, though recorded over 40 years ago, could have been captured just yesterday.

4 out of 5 stars very good .......2006-10-01

"Smack My B**ch Up" is a very good single. Naturally, you already own the title track on the corresponding "Fat of the Land" disc. 'No Man Army' is a strong instrumental that features the band's typical hard techno. While 'Mindfields' is one of the LP's best tracks, this Headrock Dub version sounds suspiciously similar to the original. For many, the purpose of a single is the release of a remixed version of the title track. The DJ Hype Mix does not disappoint. If you've listened to the LP version a zillion times, this mix will keep it fresh for a few more listens. Overall, "Smack My B**ch Up" will help to extend your enjoyment of what may be Prodigy's most compelling time period.

    5 out of 5 stars don't misunderstand.......2005-11-22

The song "Smack My Bitch Up" is often misunderstood. Case in point, NOW claiming that it promoted violence against women. Rather, the song is about the drug heroin. "Smack" is slang for heroin; "my bitch" refers to the vein/artery in the arm used to inject the drug. The controversial video for the song explicitly shows someone shooting up heroin, then going club-hopping, to a strip-club, throwing up, and basically having a drugged-up night. This explains the mood of the song. So don't worry that the song promotes misogynistic attitudes; rather, it's a very thinly veiled "When I got high..." story, as evidenced by the video.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype.......2002-04-21

One of the best bands to be signed on Madonna's Maverick label, Prodigy produced a smash hit song and plenty of controversy when "Smack My Bitch Up" was released in the United States in 1997. The song which was used in a major scene in the film "Charlie's Angels" incorporates eletronica, rock, and Middle Eastern music in providing the listener with a throbbing, enjoyable tune. This maxi-single contains several versions of the song, however I am still a big fan of the original album version. The other remixes are okay.

However, with the political correctiveness that runs the world today, many feminists and anti-domestic violence advocates caused a stir in the media saying that this song was sexist and degrading. With media news hounds interviewing such people and groups as Denise Brown (sister of murder victim Nicole Brown Simpson) and N.O.W., many rush to criticize Prodigy when in fact the title totally means something else in British slang (a similar case was when the film "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" was released in the USA; the term "shag" doesn't mean anything offensive in the USA, however the film was retitled for release in the United Kingdom, because the term "shag" is used as an expletive in that country's lingo).

Overall, "Smack My Bitch Up" was one of 1997's best songs. Madonna is one smart business woman if she is able to sign this great band on her label before anyone else could. What a great band and song!

4 out of 5 stars Drop kicking basslines and screaming climaxes..........2001-01-03

describes this cd single, which is one of many, to the fullest. Liam Howlet (the musical genious behind The Prodigy) gives a taste of whats to come in the, then upcoming album; "Fat Of The Land." In this single you hear to be what I believe one of the phattest songs in the set, and if you too get your kicks out of hearing slamming bass and meaningless shouted slogans mixed and remixed then this is the single your looking for. Definitely the phattest out of all the singles from "Fat Of The Land." Do yourselves a favor and Go Get It!

someone said how this song is sexist and offensive. If you didn't know, the whole sentence means something else in England where their from. Don't know the meaning though. Though the lead singer said it was really about intensity, rather than offense at women. The song is weird, yet kind of enjoyable. I don't think it's their best song at all, though.

1 out of 5 stars DISGUSTING, SEXIST AND DEGRADING! THIS BELONGS IN THE TOILET.......2000-08-21

I truly hate this recording. There is nothing in creation to recommend it and I find it offensive, disgusting and sexist. It is not only an insult to women. This repulsive recording is an insult to anybody with a conscience and more than a modicum of intelligence. This has no redeeming features and the sound is horrendous. I'd rather hear JACKHAMMERS! Some beat! It is ruthless, relentless and just plain atonal and completely lacking in talent. What on earth would compel anybody to own this? I had the misfortune of hearing it at a party and I hope I never am so auditorally punished again. I HATE THIS RECORDING!

This is the video that made MTV run a brief 30 second MTVNews spot to warn AMP audiences about the content of the video. They tried to keep it from us by showing it at 2:00 in the morning, now you can own it at home. This video is simply amazing, directed by Jonus Ackerland, who also directed one of Madonnas videos, it won breakthrough dance video at the MTV Video awards in 97. As is its an amzing video and at the end of the video itself is a twist that makes the video the greatest Prodigy video of all time, if not one of the greatest all-round videos of all time, be warned though, its not for the faint of heart, contains, nudity, alcohol use, drug use, and several scenes of grotesque acts (vomitting for instance).
