Loreena McKennitt's "songs for the season" are haunting for their beauty and her fascinating voice. Blending traditional Irish music with worldbeat and New Age-like instrumentation, McKennitt's arrangements are at once elegant and eloquent, enchanting and familiar, whether she's singing "Coventry Carol," "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," or "Good King Wenceslas." "Snow," adapted from a 19th-century poem, and the traditional "Seeds of Love" are so lofty and deep they reach almost mystical places. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:
ok, THIS is Loreena McKennitt's CHRISTMAS Album.......2007-06-16
This, then, is her Christmas album. Although short, at only five songs, it is a well thought-out album, and a definite "Must-Have" and a "Keeper". The songs here are wonderful, not your standard fare for Christmas, so it is a fresh experience, something always welcome with music for this time of the year, don't you think? Her accompanyment, here, is harp only, so everything is light and open, just right, and soothing after all the crash and bang regular Christmas music......I mean, how many times can one listen to Silver Bells, Jingle Bells, and Here Comes Santa Claus before you just wanna scream "STOP!", huh?
Pick this album up, take it home, and slip in between some other Christmas albums, and be prepared to go "WOW!....That's Nice!", and to also find a new favorite Christmas album. ~operabruin

Interested in visiting your favorite contestants from the second season of American Idol? Then this is the album for you, but be forewarned that something is lost in the translation from the small screen to the compact disc. Simon Cowell's scathing comments and Paula Abdul's head tossing add to the human drama; without those visual embellishments, the recorded version falls flat. Sure this is a talented bunch, but the material is mundane, with few of the finalists straying from the traditional arrangements. But when they do, it's sometimes worse. Ruben Stoddard's rendition of the Carpenters hit "Superstar" reeks of misplaced sincerity. The best cut on the disc is Kimberly Caldwell's throaty cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which gives the song some well-needed grit. And while Julia Demato's voice is no match for Etta James's full-bodied version of "At Last," Demato gives the classic a fetching kittenish spin. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:
THE BEST TALENT!!! some bad song selects............2007-06-29
hands down the best track on the album is 'superstar' by ruben studdard. he channeled luther vandross sooooo amazingly that luther would be proud. 'killing me softley' my kim caldwell was awesome as well. she defiinatly brought the blue eyed soul on this track.
clay aiken, trenyce, charles grigsby, and carmen did great jobs on there songs as well....
now the bad.... i love kimberley locke and she did an brilliant job on 'somewhere over the rainbow', BUT the cd is called LOVE SONGS and that is not a love song at all. rickey is a great voice but his version of 'back to one' sounded EXACTLY like brian mcknight. josh gracin (was not my favourite) did a HORRIBLE job on this song... they should have gave him a country song to sing.
the class of season 2 will still be my favourite voices but i just wish they picked better songs for this cd.

I love what American Idol has done for singing!.......2005-08-10
These American Idol CDs and programs are filled with so much varying talents. From Hard rock to Country, America is becoming interested in identifying true talent. As an Opera Singer myself I can still enjoy the gifts of other genres and am sad to hear when others look down upon the show. Also, as a voice teacher of many styles I can't stress enough the need to my own students for them to develop themselves as a "Complete Unique Package". Finding their own true niche and style including: voice type, genre, best repertoire, to the the right audition outfit. American Idol teaches the same theories. Be true to yourself and your voice to get your best shot at this business of singing. I am an advocat for AI and all shows that encourage the high developement of arts in America. We come from a society that watched sports religiously on telievision (which is great) but there are so many talents to support including singing out there amongst us. American Idol gives artists and viewers a fantastic opportunity.

Classy Christmas selection.......2002-10-27
Jane has a crystal clear voice which see uses to good effect on a range of Christmas songs, mostly carols, several of them cleverly put together in two medleys.
Perhaps the oddest choice of song here is Elusive butterfly. It is one of my favorite songs but I can't see an obvious Christmas connection - if anything, it suggests warm (or hot) summer days. Still, Jane sings it so beautifully, who cares?
You don't know how beautiful you are was adapted from a religious poem. Other rare (original?) songs are Spirit of Christmas, The Chanukah song and Madrigal quando amor i begli occhi.
This is an excellent Christmas album from a singer who visits the recording studio all too rarely.
Wonderful! Thanks Jane.......2002-01-20

Like Raffi, Hap Palmer is a musical ambassador to kids. Aiming for cultural diversity and/or sensitivity during the holidays on Holiday Magic, Palmer and, occasionally, a group of kids make their merry way through standards like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and remake "Jingle Bells" into "Jingle Song," while visiting the Jewish "Chanukah, Oh Chanukah," the Latino "Feliz Navidad," and even the Hawaiian-flavored "Merry Hula." Palmer and the adults do a wonderful "Caroling, Caroling," but it's the sing-alongs such as "The Angel Band" and others that will get families chiming in, too--and teach some important lessons at a time of year when not everyone is doing the tree and crèche thing. Recommended. --Martin KellerAlbum Description
"It's a time for love and sharing, a time to sing a joyful song" Hap Palmer's opening lines set the tone for this magical collection of songs. A variety of musical styles from playful to reverent evoke the richness of the holiday season. Hap's original songs and unique adaptations of traditional favorites invite active participation. Children clap, stamp, jiggle and dance; they express things they are thankful for, play rhythm instruments, and sing along with traditional favorites. The recording also includes instrumental versions of all the songs making it an ideal format for use in holiday programs and family and school sing-a-longs. A complete lyric book is included. Ages 3 - adultTracks 13 - 24 are instrumental versions of the 12 listed songs.

Peter White is a man who can strum a guitar with the finesse only someone who truly has passion for his art can do. He has enraptured me yet again with this CD. I am torn because I like to savior my Christmas music and only play it during Christmas time. However, there is no way I can only listen to this album around Christmas. Music this good must be played year round.

see Peter White live in Orlando 3 years ago. Since then I've been hooked on his sound. Sounds of the season makes for great listening, and each song flows together. Consistent, beautiful, reverent and joyful in a smooth sort of way. Wonderful stuff. Get it,you won't be disappointed. By the way if that guitar sounds familiar, he played on Al Stewart's records back in the 70's.

Lullay, lullay.......2006-11-15
It opens with the soothing, lullaby-like "Coventry Carol," before heading to the majestic catchiness of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and utterly enchanting "Good King Wenceslas," where a saintly king and his servant travel on foot to bring food and firewood to a poor woodsman's family. It's a beautiful little song, and the sprightly tune makes it even more so.
A smoother, softer tone comes in with "Snow," the musical adaptation of a poem by nineteenth-century Canadian poet Archibald Lampman. It's a frosty, beautiful portrait of a winter evening, without any direct reference to Christmas, but its formal tone fits in. The EP rounds off with the traditional "Seeds of Love," a sweet little love song.
Christmas is one of those holidays swamped by commercial profit and not by the traditions and beliefs behind it. So it's refreshing to hear songs that don't bring to mind mall muzak -- instead, McKennitt's EP make you think of wassail, medieval castles, cathedrals draped in holly, and blankets of snow over dark forests.
"A Winter Garden" was recorded over a few days in the summer of 1995, in Wiltshire's recording studios. It sounds pretty laid-back, and the relaxed tone of the results shows it. Her selection of songs is excellent -- four are traditional ballads, rich and underused by most singers. I'm not quite sure why she included "Seeds of Love," which while a lovely song, has no reference to Christmas or wintertime.
McKennitt not only provides her rich vocals, but also plays the harp and adds some keyboard flourishes. Backing her is Rich Lazar's medieval-sounding percussion, Hugh Marsh's violin and Caroline Lavelle's cello -- among others. There are also acoustic guitars, bass, viola, and pipes, which all are woven into a sort of medieval-pop.
While a full-length Christmas album can be found in "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," the "Winter Garden" EP is an enchanting, atmospheric listen that gives a whole new look at Christmas carols.
