Loreena McKennitt's "songs for the season" are haunting for their beauty and her fascinating voice. Blending traditional Irish music with worldbeat and New Age-like instrumentation, McKennitt's arrangements are at once elegant and eloquent, enchanting and familiar, whether she's singing "Coventry Carol," "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," or "Good King Wenceslas." "Snow," adapted from a 19th-century poem, and the traditional "Seeds of Love" are so lofty and deep they reach almost mystical places. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars ok, THIS is Loreena McKennitt's CHRISTMAS Album.......2007-06-16

Everyone considers Loreena McKennitt's "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" her Christmas album. I ask people not to call it that, it is more than that, it is music for the whole season from leaf-fall to buds and sprouts in the spring.

This, then, is her Christmas album. Although short, at only five songs, it is a well thought-out album, and a definite "Must-Have" and a "Keeper". The songs here are wonderful, not your standard fare for Christmas, so it is a fresh experience, something always welcome with music for this time of the year, don't you think? Her accompanyment, here, is harp only, so everything is light and open, just right, and soothing after all the crash and bang regular Christmas music......I mean, how many times can one listen to Silver Bells, Jingle Bells, and Here Comes Santa Claus before you just wanna scream "STOP!", huh?

Pick this album up, take it home, and slip in between some other Christmas albums, and be prepared to go "WOW!....That's Nice!", and to also find a new favorite Christmas album. ~operabruin

5 out of 5 stars Great Artist!.......2007-05-14

This is an awesome holiday / winter / Christmas CD. It is short (only 5 songs) but it is full of voice and enough to set the mood perfectly. Not traditional versions of the songs, but none the less beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-01-20

This is THE Christmas album to have.Loreena McKennitt's hauntingly beautiful voice and the wonderful arrangements of traditional Christmas songs has made this our most listened to Christmas album in the last few years.I like to play this album any time of the year as it is very peaceful and relaxing to hear.

4 out of 5 stars a winter garden.......2007-01-11

I love Loreena McKennitts' music. this CD is very melodic in a Celtic way. the music on this CD is also very mellow listening. I love the rhythms of the instruments used.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful!.......2006-12-31

The only reason I gave this item "4 stars" is because it only has the 5 songs on it - I wish it had more. However, it's still worth buying. The songs are hauntingly beautiful, in McKennitt's signature style. If you enjoy her music, this album won't disappoint. I recommend it! :-)

Interested in visiting your favorite contestants from the second season of American Idol? Then this is the album for you, but be forewarned that something is lost in the translation from the small screen to the compact disc. Simon Cowell's scathing comments and Paula Abdul's head tossing add to the human drama; without those visual embellishments, the recorded version falls flat. Sure this is a talented bunch, but the material is mundane, with few of the finalists straying from the traditional arrangements. But when they do, it's sometimes worse. Ruben Stoddard's rendition of the Carpenters hit "Superstar" reeks of misplaced sincerity. The best cut on the disc is Kimberly Caldwell's throaty cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which gives the song some well-needed grit. And while Julia Demato's voice is no match for Etta James's full-bodied version of "At Last," Demato gives the classic a fetching kittenish spin. --Jaan Uhelszki

3 out of 5 stars THE BEST TALENT!!! some bad song selects............2007-06-29

Season 2 of american idol (in my opinion) had the best talent. the biggest voices and broke all stereotypes. although some people had there choice to win the finale (i really wanted kimberley locke to win), i thought they ended by pickin the right person. the previous season had there 'best' performances but this season did the opposite and decided to do love songs... honestly they should have did a greatest hits LP because i could name quite a few BRILLIANT performances by at least 5 of the contestants.

hands down the best track on the album is 'superstar' by ruben studdard. he channeled luther vandross sooooo amazingly that luther would be proud. 'killing me softley' my kim caldwell was awesome as well. she defiinatly brought the blue eyed soul on this track.

clay aiken, trenyce, charles grigsby, and carmen did great jobs on there songs as well....

now the bad.... i love kimberley locke and she did an brilliant job on 'somewhere over the rainbow', BUT the cd is called LOVE SONGS and that is not a love song at all. rickey is a great voice but his version of 'back to one' sounded EXACTLY like brian mcknight. josh gracin (was not my favourite) did a HORRIBLE job on this song... they should have gave him a country song to sing.

the class of season 2 will still be my favourite voices but i just wish they picked better songs for this cd.

1 out of 5 stars All Time Classic Love Songs...Ruined.......2006-07-18

Seriously, this CD is BAD. The only song that I can say is any good is Ruben Studdard's rendition of Superstar. And if you like that song, go buy Ruben's album, because this is not worth your money. The only reason I can see anyone buying this album, is if you are just into collecting AI merch. Other than than, SKIP THIS ONE.

1 out of 5 stars this cd stinks!.......2005-09-25

This cd is obnoxious. The artists all seem to compete by seeing how many notes they can add into one syllable. I have never heard so many slides on the notes.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds good.......2005-09-09

I really enjoyed this CD.
They picked good songs to sing and the vocals were good.

God Bless The USA was really good at the end!

5 out of 5 stars I love what American Idol has done for singing!.......2005-08-10

As a professional singer and Voice Teacher, I am so thrilled to see how American Idol has given the art of singing such a jump start in these last few years.

These American Idol CDs and programs are filled with so much varying talents. From Hard rock to Country, America is becoming interested in identifying true talent. As an Opera Singer myself I can still enjoy the gifts of other genres and am sad to hear when others look down upon the show. Also, as a voice teacher of many styles I can't stress enough the need to my own students for them to develop themselves as a "Complete Unique Package". Finding their own true niche and style including: voice type, genre, best repertoire, to the the right audition outfit. American Idol teaches the same theories. Be true to yourself and your voice to get your best shot at this business of singing. I am an advocat for AI and all shows that encourage the high developement of arts in America. We come from a society that watched sports religiously on telievision (which is great) but there are so many talents to support including singing out there amongst us. American Idol gives artists and viewers a fantastic opportunity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Legend's a Legend.......2007-01-01

This brief Christmas sampler is more moving and entertaining than a dozen over-produced CDs from our favorite artists. The four piano-voiced cuts are the greatest, but the inclusion of "It Don't Have to Change" from "Get Lifted", featuring the Stephens family, is an exquisite and totally appropriate choice to include on this heartfelt CD. Legend's "What a Wonderful World" pays tribute to the great Ray Charles while interpreting it as a Christmas treat. John Legend has many more treats to give us in his future. What a wonderful Christmas album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Such Joy.......2004-01-25

For those of us lucky enough to know the music of Jane Olivor, we need say nothing. The only way that she can go wrong is by selecting bad music to sing (which she does not often do). Fortunately, this album contains only wonderful music that has a fantastic selection of not-so-common seasonal tunes, and just a few typical holiday tunes to plug into our hearts. The result is a treasure to keep (and play) for years.

Jane's artistry helps you to connect with your soul, and that is the best any artist can do.

5 out of 5 stars A voice that continues to amaze.......2003-12-16

Mixing traditional with the unexpected ("Elusive Butterfly"???) is the forte in Olivor's holiday package. While she is less successful on the jazz-tinged tunes and she strains on hitting those fa la la high notes, "Madrigal" and "You Don't Know How Beautiful You Are" reiterates her remarkable voice. Olivor interprets the latter song so breathy and intimately that she becomes the lover laying beside you whispering in your ear.

5 out of 5 stars A Beauty.......2002-12-24

Jane Olivor is one artist who we don't hear enough from, now comes this wonderful holiday package every note clear and well placed, particularly on Stephen Schwartz & Steve Young's "We Are Lights". Most of the album has pared down arraingments letting the beauty of Olivor's voice and the choice of material come through. My only complaint would be that in the "Christmas Potpourri" she does only snippets of the relatively unknown "A'Soalin" by Paul Stookey (of Peter,Paul& Mary) and "Breath of Heaven" by Amy Grant-these are song that should be made known as new standards of the Holiday. Hats off the Jane Olivor, and now I want more!

5 out of 5 stars Classy Christmas selection.......2002-10-27

The choice of material for this album is hardly original (with a couple of exceptions) but there is no denying the sheer quality of this album.

Jane has a crystal clear voice which see uses to good effect on a range of Christmas songs, mostly carols, several of them cleverly put together in two medleys.

Perhaps the oddest choice of song here is Elusive butterfly. It is one of my favorite songs but I can't see an obvious Christmas connection - if anything, it suggests warm (or hot) summer days. Still, Jane sings it so beautifully, who cares?

You don't know how beautiful you are was adapted from a religious poem. Other rare (original?) songs are Spirit of Christmas, The Chanukah song and Madrigal quando amor i begli occhi.

This is an excellent Christmas album from a singer who visits the recording studio all too rarely.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Thanks Jane.......2002-01-20

If you are Jane Olivor fan I hope you will get this albumn. I had the good fortune of seeing her in concert in Asheville, NC. in December 2001 and thoroughly enjoyed myself. She sang many of the songs from this albumn. She is a great artist that gives her all and she exudes a sincere love and caring for her fans. We had three wonderful encores, with Jane performing "We go Where there is Love" as her finale. If you ask me, that was the perfect end to a perfect evening listening to my favorite singer. It was great to hear her unique voice again. I purchase the albumn a few days after the concert and I am still listening to it. My favorite cuts are You Don't Know How Beautiful You Are & Elusive Butterfly, great cover!. I could write a small book about what the concert and albumn have meant to me, but I am limited. Buy it and Enjoy it. It's not all about Christmas but will add to your Christmas sound collection.

5 out of 5 stars loveliest christmas music ever.......2007-07-18

This is on my playlist all year. I've never heard anything else that so beautifully captures the flavor of Christmas, in a way that brings to mind all of the richness, warmth, simplicity and sanctity of the medieval celebration. The flavor is not secular. This is just like drinking a steaming hot spiced wine in a cabin with a fireplace and a stone church visible from the window, full of meaning and warmth. The singing and instrumentation are really something else.

5 out of 5 stars Great Medieval Music.......2007-01-09

I was looking for something in the way of holiday music that was also medieval and this fits the bill! Most of the tunes are ones I recognized and some I didn't but they were all well done and fun to listen to. A great addition to my holiday music collection!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Medieval Christmas CD--Ever!.......2004-01-01

What a find this remarkable CD is! If you love authentic Medieval music, played with the authentic instruments of its time and sung in the same way that a nobleman's court of the 14th or 15th Century might have heard it--this is the one for you. Beth and Barry Hall, both very gifted musicians, offer the finest collection of European Medieval carols I have yet found, and I have a large collection of the music of this period. A Bravissima performance to be savored all year round. Good Lords and Ladies all, grab this one!

5 out of 5 stars feast of sopngs.......2003-12-19

The best medieval holiday music yet! A trip through time, and so well done. I have listened to many others, and this one rates the best! I am looking forward to their next release!

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice!.......2003-01-15

I have been listening to this album for two Christmas seasons and never seem to tire of it. The instrumental pieces are very well done, beautifully providing delicate, intricate harmonies. The vocal numbers are equally well done. There is a nice selection of songs, some familiar to the modern listener, and some providing a good introduction to medieval music. This is Christmas music for all ages.

Like Raffi, Hap Palmer is a musical ambassador to kids. Aiming for cultural diversity and/or sensitivity during the holidays on Holiday Magic, Palmer and, occasionally, a group of kids make their merry way through standards like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and remake "Jingle Bells" into "Jingle Song," while visiting the Jewish "Chanukah, Oh Chanukah," the Latino "Feliz Navidad," and even the Hawaiian-flavored "Merry Hula." Palmer and the adults do a wonderful "Caroling, Caroling," but it's the sing-alongs such as "The Angel Band" and others that will get families chiming in, too--and teach some important lessons at a time of year when not everyone is doing the tree and crèche thing. Recommended. --Martin Keller

2 out of 5 stars Another Blah Christmas Album.......2006-12-22

I bought this one because I was looking for a very hip Christmas album. Knowing Peter White, what else is there but hip music. Wrong. This wasn't Peter White at all (except for 'Jingle Bells') - or not the Peter White I've become familiar with. It was just another 'dime-a-dozen' Christmas album... boring.

If you want some smooth jazz hip music.. look elsewhere. If you want to sleep.. this is the baby for you. Just try not to snore too loud!

5 out of 5 stars Sweetness personified.......2006-12-02

I bow to the greatness that is Peter White. I am blown away by this album. My only regret is that it took me so long to purchase it. I have been a Peter White fan for years and somehow I neglected to purchase this one. The songs on this album are so pure they will stir emotions deep within you. "River" with Kenny Lattimore is exceptional in its innocent vocal sweetness.

Peter White is a man who can strum a guitar with the finesse only someone who truly has passion for his art can do. He has enraptured me yet again with this CD. I am torn because I like to savior my Christmas music and only play it during Christmas time. However, there is no way I can only listen to this album around Christmas. Music this good must be played year round.

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Christmas.......2005-12-20

This is my favorite Christmas album. And, I own about 35 Christmas albums. Peter White's guitar is distinctive and emotional. You will never mistake another guitarist for Peter White. This album has some of the most magnificent arrangements of standard Christmas music. O' Little Town of Bethlehem is absolutely breathtaking; it is like an Elizabethan carol. My favorite of all is The River, a Joni Mitchell song. Peter accompanies Kenny Lattimore who offers a hauntingly aching version of this song. If you can buy only one Christmas album, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas in June.......2002-06-27

Peter White is the best smooth jazz guitarist going. Every one of his CD's are total ear candy. I like this CD so much, I play it anytime of the year, especially when my homebased business problems seem to gang up on me. It soothes the overwrought nerves and clears the mind of the little things that have become big. Peter's newest CD, "Glow", is fantastic. "Songs of the Season" is much better than any smooth jazz Holiday offering. I feel lucky we have such a talent as Mr. White.

4 out of 5 stars essential christmas music.......2001-12-14

I am not a fan of smooth jazz at all but I got the chance to
see Peter White live in Orlando 3 years ago. Since then I've been hooked on his sound. Sounds of the season makes for great listening, and each song flows together. Consistent, beautiful, reverent and joyful in a smooth sort of way. Wonderful stuff. Get it,you won't be disappointed. By the way if that guitar sounds familiar, he played on Al Stewart's records back in the 70's.

4 out of 5 stars Lullay, lullay.......2006-11-15

Finally -- a Christmas album that doesn't include "Jingle Bells," "Joy to the World" or "Let It Snow." I'm so bloody sick of those songs. Instead, Loreena McKennitt looks back on an almost-forgotten time when Christmas was a sacred day full of beauty and magic, in the all-too-brief but very lovely EP "A Winter Garden."

It opens with the soothing, lullaby-like "Coventry Carol," before heading to the majestic catchiness of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and utterly enchanting "Good King Wenceslas," where a saintly king and his servant travel on foot to bring food and firewood to a poor woodsman's family. It's a beautiful little song, and the sprightly tune makes it even more so.

A smoother, softer tone comes in with "Snow," the musical adaptation of a poem by nineteenth-century Canadian poet Archibald Lampman. It's a frosty, beautiful portrait of a winter evening, without any direct reference to Christmas, but its formal tone fits in. The EP rounds off with the traditional "Seeds of Love," a sweet little love song.

Christmas is one of those holidays swamped by commercial profit and not by the traditions and beliefs behind it. So it's refreshing to hear songs that don't bring to mind mall muzak -- instead, McKennitt's EP make you think of wassail, medieval castles, cathedrals draped in holly, and blankets of snow over dark forests.

"A Winter Garden" was recorded over a few days in the summer of 1995, in Wiltshire's recording studios. It sounds pretty laid-back, and the relaxed tone of the results shows it. Her selection of songs is excellent -- four are traditional ballads, rich and underused by most singers. I'm not quite sure why she included "Seeds of Love," which while a lovely song, has no reference to Christmas or wintertime.

McKennitt not only provides her rich vocals, but also plays the harp and adds some keyboard flourishes. Backing her is Rich Lazar's medieval-sounding percussion, Hugh Marsh's violin and Caroline Lavelle's cello -- among others. There are also acoustic guitars, bass, viola, and pipes, which all are woven into a sort of medieval-pop.

While a full-length Christmas album can be found in "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," the "Winter Garden" EP is an enchanting, atmospheric listen that gives a whole new look at Christmas carols.

    Customer Reviews:
