5 out of 5 stars Invisible Ones..........2006-08-04

The other singer of Azure Ray, Orenda Fink has a high a beautful voice, Maria Taylor being the other singer of Azure Ray. My favorite song being Leave It All, Orenda Fink has a voice, a nice melodic voice thats greats to listen to when your on a farm. The music is soothing and some of it is really upbeat. This CD is highly recommended, along with Maria Taylor's album 11:11.

3 out of 5 stars Sum of the parts..........2006-05-26

I never understood how that saying went, like...is it the sum of the parts is greater the whole meaning, A and B are better separated than they are as AB? Or is it like peanut butter ain't peanut butter without the jelly? I don't know. But all I'm saying is this: I know the point of Orenda Fink is that its NOT Azure Ray, so it's silly to long for it. But I think...I think...Orenda did something really ambitious and adventurous here, which gets all the kudos I can muster. But it feels a little phoned in. And a little...I don't know. Born again kind of thing? Like...Hello, my name is Orenda Fink, I enjoy breathy songs about bittersweet love...but wow, I totally just spent a couple weeks in Haiti and now I'm Orenda Fink, voodoo sex creature and indie folk troubadour for the downtrodden, delivering their heartwrenching untold tale to wishy-washy post-scenesters.

That was harsh and unfounded, sorry. I really do adore Orenda Fink, but:

The strides she has taken with instrumentation seem more like gimmicks than actual musical maturation or experimentation. Here we have: tribal sounding backup vocals, some extra percussion and lots and lots and lots of Haitian imagery(I mean, the music video, the facepaint.)

On the other hand, Orenda seems to have pushed herself to another level vocally. She adopts a raspier tone, a little less ethereal and a bit more expressive. I like that.

I don't know what my problem with this cd is. I saw them live, and was pretty impressed. The CD is solid. I don't think any tracks stand out as dead weight. But for some reason, I find the whole thing kind of forgettable. Yes, it is something different for the more ambitious half of Azure Ray, but it isn't really all that different for music in general. I've heard female-centric indie bands. The thing that made Azure Ray so alluring is their sound, how stripped down and honest it seemed, it was gritty sometimes, but always inspired, and definitely unique.

So, for Orenda stepping out of her element and doing a great job, I give her a B+. For presenting something memorable to the music community, I give a C.

4 out of 5 stars cool stuff.......2006-01-19

it's good. i like maria's record better but this is still good. a little too deep and political for me at times but she really did good things with 'blind asylum' ...and 'bloodline' is ultra-catchy. on first listen it sounds kind of poetic and wistful but the album is really much darker than you'd think... borderline existential at times..

i saw her in concert this summer. such a warm, humble person. this is the kinda stuff more people should support..

4 out of 5 stars It's pretty good........2005-08-26

Okay, I'm not a fancy music critic who knows how to impress with big, incomprehensible, seemingly made up words when it comes to music but I do know good music when I hear it, and this is it. While, I hold the opinion that Orenda's album is not quite as good as her work with Azure Ray, nor is it as good as her fellow Azure Ray Bandmate, Maria Taylor's debut solo album, it still holds enough merit on it's own. Personally, I'd say it's a good album best to be listened to from beginning to end, but If I were to name my personal favorite of the album, it would have to be "Blind Asylum". Whenever I see four stars on Amazon.com I tend to think that it's probably a really bad album because seeing anything less than four stars is a rare thing for me. So if you're reading this, just know my intention is to give it four and a half stars, because while it's not quite deserving of five stars, it's an attempt I recognizing as almost there.

Country music has never been my thing, but what Will Ray has done with Invisible Birds is something fantastic! The lyrical humor and Will's ever amazing guitar licks make this a pleasure to listen to time and time again. Much more than just a 'country album', it is also a mixture of blues and jazz. It makes me smile every time I listen to it, and that is what great music is all about!

2 out of 5 stars Way too country !.......2000-07-24

When your expecting something like The Hellecasters you will be realy disappointed with this C.D. Only a couple of songs sounded like the Casters the rest was Way Too Country !

5 out of 5 stars Amazing just amazing.......1999-06-19

Who new someone could pair world class musicain ship and whit into one album. This album is amazing. It has the feel of the beatles "Maxwells Silver Hammer" with the flare and spice of the Hellecasters. I'm am in awe at what Mr. Ray has acheived on this album.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE RAY CONNIFF'S SINGERS FULL ENERGY!!.......2006-03-28

I recently bought this cd, and I enjoyed it! for me this is the "Ray Conniff Country Album", because it captures the energy of the old western spirits, and I think every country fan will be delightfull with this; the best songs for me in this disc are "Everybody Loves Somebody" and "Singing The Blues", but the rhythm touch of "Walk The Line" is excellent (is as excellent as the original Johnny Cash version); another very good one is "Marianne" (very good final for a very good cd), It's impossible to listen "Oh Lonesome Me" and "Waitin'for the Evening Train" without the wish of dance and clap hands (these are wonderful and terrific country-style songs); because is another excellent work of the master Conniff, YOU HAVE TO BUY IT!! YOU ARE GOING TO DANCE AND SHOUT WITH THIS CD!!

5 out of 5 stars Invisible is irresistable!.......2004-07-03

Perhaps Ray Conniff's best album.
Clever arrangements that heighten the
appeal of the already catchy material.
Definative versions of the Dean Martin
classic "Everybody Loves Somebody"
and Elvis' "Are You Lonesome Tonight."
If you like how the Conniff Singers sound
on his first two Christmas albums, then you
will love this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-08-01

When I first bought the lp when it was first published I thought is was great , and now on CD it sounds even greater, it differs a bit with the traditional Ray Conniff sound but still great.

2 out of 5 stars Typical Conniff: All Jazzed Up! But "Marianne"'s Good..........1998-10-02

Ray Conniff, etcetera, are great singers, but they DO have a very unfortunate tendency to "jazz things up"; thus songs on this album which would otherwise be excellent (such as "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine") end up downright ruined, a thing I can unhappily say of just about every song here.

However, if you don't mind buying an entire CD for just one song, "Marianne" is EXCELLENT (and saves this CD from an ignominious rating of 1 star). This is the traditional song -- "All day, all night, Marianne / Down by the seaside, siftin' sand..." -- done very well indeed. This is probably more in SPITE of the "jazzing up" than as a result of it, for the song itself, with its Calypso beat, lends itself very nicely to the "Singers" style. At any rate I find it well worth the price I paid for it.

One word of warning: although "Marianne" is certainly very catchy, it may prove offensive to some people -- it was written in a different age, and the person supposedly courting Marianne first insults her mother (twice!), and then expects her to marry him and become a baby factory!!! To be fair, however, this is the fault of the *song*, not the singers. All the same I thought I'd better mention it. Forewarned is forearmed!

5 out of 5 stars The mystery of the Invisible Ray.......2001-04-14

I'm not limited to musical style or category. I love music that is painstakingly composed and well executed.

Marquis'"Invisible Ray" has been in my player for months now. Is it jazz? Is it classical? Is it rock? Is it pop? I've been trying to figure it out. I do know this: the recording is growing on me--almost to the point of dependence.

This is a gem of a cd. Wonderful songs with beautiful hooks and swirling melodies. It's wild, playful, passionate and intelligent.

Great musicians. There's fine integration here and Mark plays with a blend of conviction and restraint.

There's something about the sequence of the tunes- a natural progression gives one the sense that a story is being told here. It's an adventure in music. So what's it all about? On some level, it's a bit mysterious. I suppose that's why I find myself listening over and over again.
