Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz
Eight years after Don Byron's landmark Tuskegee Experiments, it's still not as if the clarinet's making a comeback. But the once-dominant instrument is far more frequently evident in jazz these days - and not just in Dixieland. Ben Goldberg, the Bay Area composer and bandleader, has long been ahead of that curve. As leader of the New Klezmer Trio, he had the jump on Byron's klezmer project (Plays the Music of Mickey Katz) and on John Zorn's klezmer-inspired supergroup Masada. Somehow, though, Goldberg has never attracted the same kind of notice. Must be an East Coast/West Coast thing because the music on Twelve Minor slams the noggin with delicious complexities. The Middle Eastern/Middle European themes percolate throughout, refined through the (seemingly requisite of late) post-Ornette structural influences, but Goldberg doesn't stop there. He's organized a superb sextet - drummer Kenny Wollesen, bassist Trevor Dunn, koto improvisor Miya Masoaka, violinist Carla Kihlstedt, and tenor saxophonist Rob Sudduth - that's extremely sensitive to textural tensions. (For examples, check the vigorous precision of Wollesen's brush work or the Eastern traditions and tunings evoked by Masoaka.) These tensions can be resolved or heightened through delicately tuned interplay. As exemplified by the contemplative lilt of "Twine: Harmony," one of eight studies on the album, it's a chemistry that's part old country, part jazz underground, and part Zen garden.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Music from a Forgotten Composer.......2007-03-30

As I am in general agreement with David Bryson I can be brief. Charles Avison was all but forgotten, his only work that was in the calalogue was his 12 Concerti Grossi following the lessons ( keyboard sonatas ) of Domenico Scarletti. We should be thankful to The Avison Ensemble and Naxos for his revival, as well as this opus 6 they have recorded opus 3 and opus 4. This CD is well played, spirited, crisp and clear, and the music is not trivial, as least as good as his mentor's, Geminiani, later works. Like Geminiani many of the outer movements are melodic and lyrical. Opus 6 was published in 1758, late in the baroque period, and I agree that it improves as the disc progresses, with the final 3 or 4 concertos sounding a bit like the string concertos of C P E Bach? Unlikely, they were written about 10 years later. David Bryson suggests J C Bach, but he did not arrive in London untill 4 years after. Perhaps we should say they sound like a maturing Charles Avison.
I am happy to give it 5 stars, and look forward to more Avison, especially late works.

Charles Avison was twenty-four years younger than Handel and twenty-three years older than Haydn. He was a Geordie, born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He went to London at an early age to receive lessons from Geminiani, himself a pupil of Corelli, and got himself into a spot of controversy by his robust claim that Geminiani was a better composer than Handel. The latter still dominated the London musical scene to a surprising extent even after his death and up to the time of Avison's own -- pasticcio-Handel oratorios such as Gideon were still being churned out -- and whether or not for that reason the ambitious Avison did not try to exorcise Handel's musical ghost from the capital but returned to the north, dying there in prosperous circumstances in 1770 at the age of 61.

These twelve concertos were published in 1758, one year before Handel died. When they were written I don't know, but there is a definite sense of change and development in their style. The first six are all in the standard slow-quick-slow-quick format customary in the trio sonatas of Handel and other contemporaries. Of the remaining six only # 8 is to this pattern, and the style is definitely altering as well. The final gavotte-like `tempo moderato' of # 11 has a definite suggestion of Gluck to my ears, but in general what the idiom is starting to suggest is that of J C Bach, the so-called `London Bach', the sense of this being strongest in the opening movement of # 12, the longest piece in the entire set. It is all very pleasant stuff, not `great' music by any stretch of the term, but not routine or mechanical either. All twelve concertos are short, and the first six do not measure up anywhere near to the quirky masterpieces that Handel published with the same opus-number, whose influence can be heard in Beethoven's late string quartets and which were held up by such an orchestral virtuoso as Elgar as being a model of how to write for strings. The latter six are every bit as good musically as their predecessors, and have a strong historical interest as well.

The Avison Ensemble are clearly a thrusting organisation, with an open membership which can be applied for via the email address and website provided. There are 11 players, and I assume that the seven parts in the concerto descriptions are made up of the five normal string sections plus the `concertino' group of four soloists plus the harpsichord continuo. Their director is Pavlo Beznosiuk whose work is new to me but who has a very impressive-looking cv already for a man who looks as if he may not be 40 yet. They are specialists, by definition more or less, and the playing is of the very highest professionalism, exactly what one expects from the superb current generation of early-music performers. The recording is absolutely excellent, and the liner-notes by Mark Kroll and Gordon Dixon are a model of their kind, except that something seems to have gone slightly wrong with the tempo-directions for the seventh concerto - track 1 has a final adagio section, and the music on track 2 is no kind of allegro but an andante or larghetto.

This is music I am very pleased to have discovered, and a venture that deserves every success.

I haven't even listened through the entire CD. I don't think I can bring myself to spend my time doing so. Where to begin. From the selections I've heard, the chorus sounds incredibly thin and weak, the organ overpowering them on numerous occasions. Part of the blame in that, however, goes to the mix...the choir not getting enough mic to balance out the instruments. That happens too often in chorus/instrument recordings and it drives me batty. The music selections aren't so inspiring either. You would do much better devoting your hard-earned dollars to Eric Whitacre's acappella choral works, or any of his contemporaries.

For much of the Baroque period, there was no useful distinction between orchestral and chamber music. All music, unless performed in church or on some festive occasion, was cultivated in the home, and even the concertos of Vivaldi and Bach rarely require more than a dozen people for an adequate performance. These "sonatas," which consist of single movement compositions with several linked sections, variously employ violins, violas, trumpets (and drums), cellos and continuo instruments (harpsichord, organ, lute). Biber had a unique ability to come up with catchy tunes and arrange them in formally satisfying way. The music is brilliant and consistently engaging. So are these performances. --David Hurwitz

The holiday CD Heavenly Host Is sung by the British St. Paul's Cathedral Choir. The singing is very beautiful. More specificly, they have a wonderful range of voices from low men's voices to tenor boys' voices. They also arrange these voices beautifully and put the right pitches in at the right times to create MAGNIFICENT harmony. Next, sing some classic and some "not so classic" carols. However, if you are a person who likes to understand what you hearing, this isn't the CD for you. While the voices are wonderful, the words are quite difficult to understand unless you know the carol well. On the other hand, it can be fun to try to figure out what the singers are saying!

5 out of 5 stars LITTLE BOX CONTAINS BIG THRILLS !!!!!.......2004-09-15

JUST GOT THIS ONE TODAY. MY MOM GAVE ME MONEY FOR IT (THANK YOU, MOMMY!!!) I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO IT ALL AFTERNOON AND AM EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH IT. I THINK YOU WILL BE TOO. SOME OF THESE RECORDINGS HAVE BEEN PREVIOSLY RELEASED ON CD (THE SIBELIUS AND THE HAYDN DISCS ARE THE ONES I ALREADY HAD), BUT THE NEW STUFF IS WORTH GETTING THE WHOLE BOX FOR. THIS INCLUDES STEREO RECORDINGS OF BEETHOVEN 5TH PIANO CONCERTO WITH CASADESUS AND A PETROUCHKA BOTH WITH CONCERTGEBOUW AND A BERG, WEBERN, AND STRAVINKY AGON DISC THAT WAS ORIGINALLY ON WESTMINSTER IN THE 50S. SPECIAL MENTION SHOULD ALSO BE MADE OF THE PIECES BY BORIS BLACHER. NOT FAMILIAR MUSIC, BUT I CONFESS I REALLY LIKED IT IMMEDIATELY. SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT THROUGHOUT THE SET, SOME MONO, BUT THEY ALL SOUND FANTASTIC. IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HANS ROSBAUD, THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START. IN MY HUMBLE OPINION ONE OF THE GREATEST CONDUCTORS. SHAME ON EMI/IMG FOR NOT INCLUDING HIM IN THE SO-CALLED "GREAT CONDUCTORS OF THE 20TH CENTURY" SERIES. HE WAS A GREAT CONDUCTOR !!! DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, ASK STRAVINSKY OR BOULEZ !!! ALSO GIVE THIS A TRY, YOU'LL WONDER WHY THIS GUY ISN'T MENTIONED IN THE SAME BREATH AS FURTWANGLER, KARAJAN, ETC. A TRULY IMPORTANT AND UNMISSABLE ISSUE. THANKS TO DEUTSCHE GRAMOPHONE AND THANK YOU TO YOU FOR READING MY REVIEW !!!!

            Album Description

ModeÕs Scelsi Edition continues with the second volume devoted to his piano works, consisting of two works from different periods in ScelsiÕs oeuvre. ¥ The Suite No. 2 is one of the earliest of ScelsiÕs published piano works. ¥ A highly virtuosic and expressive work, this Suite receives its first recording here. ¥ Written in 1955, Action Music is among ScelsiÕs last piano works. ¥ Action Music was premiered by Geoffrey Douglas Madge in 1986 in Darmstadt. ¥ The title Action Music points to the high energy and physical and gestural elements of the music. The workÕs vigorous character is underscored by predominantly fast tempi and directions for playing, including violento, con fuoco, martellato, fragroso (deafening!) and come percussione. ¥ In Action Music the performers are asked to play the piano in unusual ways by using their palms parallel to the keyboard, and employing fists and forearms to perform single pitches, chords, clusters and glissandi. ¥ One of CanadaÕs leading pianists, Stephen Clarke has performed as a soloist in festivals in Europe, Canada, and the U.S. He has worked with a number of ensembles and has performed as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the ComposersÕ Orchestra. ¥ This audiophile quality recording was made using high-resolution 96khz/24-bit technology.

3 out of 5 stars The Prehistory of Scelsi.......2006-01-22

This disc, the latest in Mode's series of recordings devoted to the music of the eccentric Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi, scores heavily in terms of rarity value--featuring, as it does, only the second recording of the 1955 Action Music, and the first recording of the 1930 Second Suite, the earliest of Scelsi's works to make it to CD thus far.

The Second Suite (subtitled "The Twelve Minor Prophets") comes from long before Scelsi was to develop his own remarkable "on one note" style, yet even at the age of 25 his music had certain similarities to his mature work. The twelve pieces in the suite have a strongly improvisational feel, and a rather obsessive nature, though they lack the distinctiveness and drive that makes Scelsi's later music so memorable. The inlay notes compare this music to Scriabin, but I felt more of a similarity to some of the Futurists, or to the less subtle disciples of Stravinsky.

Action Music, transcribed from the composer's own improvisations in 1955, is altogether a more interesting work. Extremely aggressive, with much use of fortissimo note-clusters, it contains as dynamic piano writing as anywhere in Scelsi's oeuvre. Occasionally, more reposeful moments break through the often relentless toccata-like textures, fortissimo repeated notes and passages played with fists, arms and elbows, but the overall impression is one of vibrant rhythmic energy.

Neither of these works is really major Scelsi--though I wouldn't want to be without Action Music--and thus this disc is most likely to be attractive to Scelsi completists. Nonetheless, with good inlay notes and Mode's usual high production values, it may be interesting to those who want to know how the composer reached his distinctive style. Stephen Clarke's performances are solid and accomplished--this is definitely his sort of music--though I wished for a little more wild abandon in Action Music's more frenetic moments.

            Worth considering.
