Regroupant du matériel de Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, Alex North et plusieurs autres, In Session propose un parcours éclectique au travers des années de compositions de chacune des bandes sonores présentées au sein de la compilation. Le voyage commence à avec la musique rejetée de 2001 d'Alex North, pour faire un parcours passant par Rebecca, Citizen Kane (Félicitons ici le FABULEUSE voix de la soprano Janice Watson et la direction impécable de Joel McNeely), Viva Zapata!, Psycho, The Sand Pebbles, Patton, Jaws, Platoon (Autre musique rejetée du regreté Georges Delerue, pastiche du célèbre Adagio pour cordes de Samuel Barber), Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (Musique composée par Joel McNeely pour le livre se déroulant entre The Empire Stricke Back et The Return of the Jedi) pour finalement clore avec Tara's Bulba. A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Hamelin's Percy Grainger, presenting not only old favorites but should-be favorites (absolutely delightful discoveries for many of us), played with breathtakingly deceptive and natural sound ease, in its superb control and subtle artistry, is perhaps one of the most riveting and satisfying to date -- a real delight. What marvellous melodic voicings, and such a gorgeous mastery of the pedals! Don't be hesitant in acquiring this; you should do so by any means necessary!

Clarity,simplicity and refinement is what Grianger craves.......2000-10-03

Grainger is soulfully direct engaging music. You cannot toss it off as simple,playful disarming bits of snap and pop for the musical imagination. Grainger was a deadly serious musician,and scoured countless musical genres,the piano,our fortune was his most cherished and sought after timbral center. Ample degrees of pure refined,tailored piano timbre you'll discover in this music,fine bits of grace notes to help colour a downbeat,or a flourish.Fine voicings of chords,and it is the ultimate mark of genius when you cannot imagine another realization of these finely wrought piano solos,even though their source was the voice. I think Hamelin needs this music to help deepen his own musucianship.Picasso said this of art, the problem is not becoming an artist,but remaining one,and,his fan club claims he sometimes plays a bit robotically passive,all furioso technique without an engaged soul,or emotive mannered bombast like Horowitz I suppose. Yet Horowitz knew how to create excitement without sacrificing deep musical committment,as the Carmen Variations.

Hamelin has been scouring the neglected piano repertoire,for quite some time, Alkan,Sorabji,Catoire,Medtner,Busoni,late Listz,Roslavets, Villa-Lobos,and quite recently Frederic Rzewski's political/mural ,the Variations on the powerful Chilean folk tune.I wish other pianists had this vision. The Jutish melody here did have a reference to a political situation, the Jute Mill was the site of rebellion in 19th century agrarian British culture.

Whether Hamelin puts off the overtly emotional is a matter of taste and judgement. I tend to get excited about clarity first,and Grainger's music begs for clarity,for if you ever heard excessive rubatos,and durational liberties, the content of the wonderfully simple melodies, their charm and reverie would have escaped into mediocrity and sacrificed at the head-block of performative indulgence. I think Hamelin treads a fine line,between what should emote and what should remain within the refinement of pianistic timbral clarity.

Fantastic Grainger Recital!.......2000-01-08

Strangely enough, there have not been too many recordings of Grainger's piano music. Martin Jones did a four disc set on Nimbus. But this set is good because it has his famous arrangements (Country Gardens, Irish Tune From County Derry, Shepherd's Hey) which makes this disc irresistible for someone looking for a one-disc survey. I was utterly surprised when this disc came out-Hamelin keeps on surprising me with his choice of repertoire! He is on his toes throughout, and in the lyrical music he is superb! My favorites are In Dahomey, which is Granger's version of Scott Joplin (he puts two tunes together) and the "MacGuire's Kick" from the Stanford Irish Dances (a transcription of a transcription!)Utterly fascinating, and beautifully recorded.

A good start but..........2006-02-01

As other reviewers have mentioned, this isn't quite complete. All of the grand marches, dirges, and (understandably as this was recorded in the 1950s) unavailable-at-the-time marches are missing. Some non-marches have been substituted, confusing the issue. However, this is the largest and most readily available compilation that goes beyond the "greatest hits" sets that so permeate the CD bins. (There IS a truly complete set, but it's only available in Japan, and for whatever reason, it's not being mass-imported to the States at the moment. Go figure.)
For now, I would recommend this to someone who has not purchased a lot of other Sousa CDs so as to avoid the inevitable overlap. You won't have everything, but there's a lot to enjoy here.

Close, but not QUITE complete.......2002-10-16

A very nice collection, with crisp performances. It is, however, not complete. There is at least one march, The Wedding March," missing, and it is one that is VERY hard to find. Perhaps the set should be called "The Almost, But Not Quite Complete, Sort Of, Marches....."
