5 out of 5 stars a little-known gem.......2006-10-06

The previous reviewer said a lot of the most important things. I wanted to add that "Chasin' The Bird" has great work from all concerned, including a surprise "silent" break from the great and undersung Detroit drummer Roy Brooks, and that "I'll Remember April" is a thoroughly exhilarating performance, with one of Barry Harris' best recorded solos and great exchanges between Rodney and altoist Charles McPherson.

5 out of 5 stars A great comeback effort.......2005-11-09

This was Red's comeback album after being off the jazz scene for over a dozen years, thanks mainly to a severe drug addiction, though other health problems contributed (bad teeth and a stroke in 1972). His chops were not back yet and he knew it, and it shows to a certain extent on this CD. But there is also some great stuff here.

For one thing he is not afraid to be ambitious and except for his frequent employment of the mute (which I think he uses to hide the fact that his open tone, which later became as ringing and bell-like as it had been in the '50s, wasn't back yet), he is on the attack. Tempos are up and his playing fiery. This is especially true on DONNA LEE and 52nd STREET THEME, classic bop tunes that demand precision and energy. Alto sax man Charles McPherson is a good foil for Red and plays well throughout. The rhythm section is solid and probably the steadiest player on the date is pianist Barry Harris: he is the perfect anchor for the date. Considering the circumstances, especially the effects from the stroke the year before, Red overcomes the adversity and had every right to be proud of this album. Hopefully, he was.

If you're looking for medieval songs in English, you'll find a disappointing number of surviving manuscripts--not even enough to make up a Top 40. Among the 20 or so pieces that remain are tantalizing hints at the richness and attractiveness of this long-vanished body of repertoire. The singers and instrumentalists of the early music group Sequentia are happy to tantalize us, and these 13 songs--including the classic "Bryd one brere" (Bird on briar), the familiar carol "Edi be thu, heven-queene," and several enticing instrumental numbers that sound almost like Scottish reels--remind us that not all medieval music resided in cloisters and cathedrals. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars A gem! both Barbara Thornton and Benjamin Bagby at their best in some of their earliest work........2007-04-14

The music radiates with the love they put into their singing. Totally convincing in their exquisite performances. Truly at home with medieval language and musical expression. One senses nothing speculative or tentative in their approach but instead a secure feel for the music and the words being sung.
A great! rendition of these very old magnificent treasures of English early sacred music.
The instrumental accompaniment and solos are nicely paced and spaced - wonderful execution. My very first of many Sequentia albums (bought it about 15 years ago and it is still my favourite) - and cheap too. Great Sound, superb musicality, nothing but superlatives ... a must for all medieval collections and Sequentia fans.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The second string lineup of Canada's biggest band..........2004-07-12

To put it simply...Terry Hatty can sing just fine...and the best example of this is on their 1995 CD "The Lonely One" (aka "Liberty" if you bought the CD in Canada) The problem comes when Terry Hatty tries to handle the material known for being sung by Burton Cummings. The 1995 material sounds perfect with Hatty singing lead, but he's all wrong for stuff like "These Eyes" and tunes like that one that are best left to Mr. Cummings.
The overall effect is much like telling Sammy Hagar he has to do Burton's songs. Best advice: skip this one and get the double live "Runnin' Back Thru Canada" CD from the REAL lineup of Bachman, Cummings, Wallace, McDougall & Peterson. I was fortunate enough to be at their concert in Montreal in June of 2000, and to hear the crowd's reaction, you'd have thought GOD had walked out onstage...Burton Cummings looked so shocked and so moved by the crowd that he said at the end of the show "We have GOT to come back HERE!" The reason Jim Kale was not in the lineup for the 2000 and subsequent tours was officially listed as "family situation"...but with the endless parade of B- and C-string lineups Kale led through the 80s and early 90s, it's probably just as well...as for terry hatty...great singer...but with his own material, please...get Runnin' Back Thru Canada if you want the TRUE Guess Who live concert experience.

3 out of 5 stars could have been better.......1999-11-03

while the playing on this cd is excellent, the lead singer seemed not to have a seriousattitude about it. "no time" alone, is worth the price of the cd.

1 out of 5 stars You'll have to "Guess Who" this is!.......1998-07-25

Fans looking for the greatness of the Randy Bachman/Burton Cummings era Guess Who are going to be awfully disappointed when they hear bassist Jim Kale's listless, not-even-close to authentic 1997 edition of the band plod through tunes which most of the musicians in this band had nothing to do with! Cheaply recorded, with a cover without pictures of any band members (wonder why), this features somebody named Terry Hatty on lead vocals (easily the worst replacement for a replacement in the history of rock) and a simply awful selection of tired tunes. Is this the worst album I ever paid money for? It's enough to make me quit listening to music, it's so just plain horrible!
