Editorial Reviews
Pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Kenny Clarke were fresh from serving as the rhythm section in the Dizzy Gillespie orchestra when they went into the studio in 1953 to record--only their second session together. "Autumn in New York," which would go on to become one of the group's staple performances in concert, summarized their cameo-like pictorial strengths. The December 23, 1954 session produced two of the group's enduring masterpieces--"Django," Lewis's tribute to the then-recently deceased French gypsy guitarist, Django Reinhardt, and "One Bass Hit," with its delightfully understated exchange between Lewis and Jackson. The "La Ronda Suite" fills out a great collection. --John Swenson

Django Reinhardt was both the first great jazz-guitar soloist and the first European jazz musician to have a significant influence on American musicians. Just as Earl Hines had found a way to transfer Louis Armstrong's assertive solo style to the piano, Reinhardt did it with the acoustic guitar, mixing inventive melodic improvisation with a decorative gypsy-guitar idiom and vigorous rhythm. He did it most often with the Hot Club of France, a quintet including violinist Stephane Grappelli, two rhythm guitarists, and a bassist that created its own distinctive style, a lightly propulsive mix that was an ideal setting for Django's mix of drive, invention, and charm. The recordings here range from 1936 to 1948 and showcase Reinhardt with the Hot Club, clarinetist Hubert Rostaing, and trumpeter Rex Stewart. Included is a brilliant solo performance of his "Naguine." It's an excellent introduction to one of the most original voices in jazz of the period, to a fine composer as well as a unique guitarist. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
The Best of Django Reinhardt.......2007-05-15
A definite must have!.......2007-05-13
This CD is my favorite. It compiles a lot of his best work and the sound quality is really good. Some of his other recordings are rather rough due to the technology back in the 1930s, but this CD is mastered well.
I bought this again after I lost my original while on vacation. This CD will always be in my collection.

Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940.......2005-08-22
The one critique I have is, that for some inexplicable reason, the version of Limehouse Blues on this CD is noisier (hissy) than another copy of the song I have, though it is note-for-note the same version and, I'm pretty sure, the same performance. All the other tunes appear to have been processed for higher quality- a minor drawback; an excellent CD.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Director Lasse Hallstrom's recipe for Chocolat is bittersweet, a tale of human hope and frailty imbued with no small amount of symbolism. It's a story that requires a deft, sensitive musical touch, and Hallstrom has wisely turned again to English composer Rachel Portman for the honors. As she did on The Legend of Bagger Vance and her previous, Academy Award-nominated collaboration with Hallstrom, The Cider House Rules, Portman walks the fine line between preciousness and delicacy with grace and dignity. The gypsy flavor of Django Reinhardt's and Stephane Grappelli's "Minor Swing" sets the story's place and time, while Portman's gentle pastoral melodies outline its emotional core, with a few gratifying excursions into more Euro-ethnic music to keep it well-seasoned. The result is another quiet, powerful Portman masterpiece. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

This wonderful five-disc box is an indispensable collection of prewar, prebop jazz that belongs in the company of your finest Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman sets. Technically, this isn't a true box set--it merely collects five single-disc compilations under one slipcase--but it is infinitely rewarding nonetheless. Disheartened by what he thought were sonically subpar Reinhardt collections, Ted Kendall undertook an ambitious mission to find the best original sources for this classic material and then meticulously remastered them. He wisely opted to leave in some of the surface noise to maintain the clarity and integrity of the music. And what glorious, jubilant music it is! Dating to the very first Quintet of the Hot Club of France sessions in September 1934 (before they'd even established that moniker), the collection includes all the landmark recordings Reinhardt made for Ultraphone, Decca (its English and French labels), and HMV up through the Quintet's 1939 breakup on the eve of World War II. Reinhardt's guitar work is spirited and adventurous throughout--lightning-quick runs, insistent rhythm work, and hybrid "riffs" that seem to split the difference. Nearly all the cuts feature the elegant but vivacious violin work of his most famous foil, Stephane Grappelli, who certainly deserves co-billing on the set. The way the two feed off each other's energy is magical. Despite their well-documented personality clashes, the twosome remains perhaps the most synergistic in jazz history, constantly engaging in their incredible cat-and-mouse games. Often overlooked are the songwriting talents of the two musicians, who contributed several standards to the jazz canon. Though mostly focused on the Quintet recordings, the set detours for such oddities as a pair of solo Reinhardt cuts from 1937 and collaborations with Coleman Hawkins. Simply delightful from beginning to end. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
Wonderful - for the Purists among us.......2007-07-02
The digital re-masterings themselves faithfully reproduce the original sounds, complete with all of the surface noise that attended those early 78's. For the purist this is no problem because the desire is to not have any of the music also filtered. For those who are into casual listening or background music while you drive, especially if you listen at high volume, you might find it a bit distracting.
One of the most delightful aspects of Reinhardt's group is Stephan Grappely's Jazz violin. We don't think of the violin as a jazz instrument very often, but these folks made it work wonderfully in group. Reinhardt shared the lead often with his band and it gives the music a diversity which enables sustained listening without boredom.
Good group, good selections, good music.
Django Reinhardt , Classic Early Recordings.......2007-04-12
he said if he saw it he would know what it was. I have sonically seen
Django and I know what JAZZ GENIUS IS!! He and his consorts swing from
the beginning to the end every time they do a tune. Being an un-recon-
structed Stan Kenton fan of some 60 + years, I recognize that except
for some Shorty Rogers charts and particularly "Stompin' At The Savoy"
by Bill Holman, Django could have made even the Kenton band swing! How
he could swing so hard with a wounded wing is an education. If you dig
jazz or think you might, this is the ONE to buy.
Tout Sweet.......2007-01-08
The Classic Early Recordings of Django Reinhardt is one of the best deals in the entire Amazon jungle. From sound quality to song selection to sheer quantity, this superb 5-CD set recreates a whole environment; it transports you to another place and time. Perhaps the only flaw is that Stephane Grappelly does not get equal billing - the real magic of this music is found in the interplay between these two giants.
It is tempting to say that Reinhardt was the Hendrix of his generation; it is perhaps more accurate to say that Hendrix was the Reinhardt of his generation. Django Reinhardt, (believed by some to be the best guitarist ever), belongs in the same pantheon with Art Tatum and Charlie Parker - he exhibited almost Faustian brilliance, worlds beyond other players. Green bananas are advised to remember that everything Reinhardt played - he actually played - these recordings were made long before technology took the place of talent.
Reinhardt's style is extremely athletic, he strums as if he is trying to rip the strings off. Lightning-quick riffs are tossed off almost thoughtlessly, creating a vibrant, racing energy. Grappelly's elegant, lyrical violin is the perfect counterpoint, where Reinhardt drives, Grappelly soars. As staggeringly fast as Reinhardt is, Grappelly never strains to keep up, his work here establishes him as heavyweight champ of jazz violin. This music is relentlessly joyful, upbeat, and sweet. While it is always possible to analyze it for sheer technical virtuosity, the temptation to fall under its magical spell is far greater. Absolutely enchanting.

if you have the mosaic and you're wondering..........2006-05-05
if you have the mosaic swing/hmv set and you're concerned about overlap, go ahead and get this set. there's only about a disc and a half of overlap. 3 1/2 hours' worth of non-duplicates, of sessions which preceded those in the mosaic and, even better, the complete paris and london decca sides from '38-39. restoration-wise, these are a little noisier than the mosaic, but also sweeter top end. different approach, i like both. pure joy.

In 1949, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli reunited for a brief tour of Italy. While they were there they recorded about 50 tunes with an Italian rhythm section, and although they didn't know it at the time, these sessions marked the last time the Gypsy guitarist and the French violinist recorded together. This CD collects 23 of the best tracks from those final sessions, including versions of Hot Club standards like "Minor Swing," "Bricktop," and "Swing 42." Reinhardt and Grappelli don't try to recreate the raucous swing of their earlier collaborations, opting instead for an intriguing blend of romantic, almost classical melodic soloing and bebop-tinged harmonies and rhythms. The attempt doesn't always succeed, primarily because the three musicians on drums, bass, and piano are clearly out of their depth. But when the two masters click, as they do on "I Got Rhythm," they demonstrate an eagerness to explore the new musical possibilities offered by postwar jazz. Sadly Reinhardt died not long after he returned from Italy, so he and Grappelli were never able to continue their musical exploration, leaving the music on Djangology as a final farewell to one of the great partnerships in jazz. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:
Great music...but only decent CD.......2006-12-20
My only problem is with the sound quality of the CD itself. I'm assuming it's probably just the original source material, though it could be a mastering issue. The sound, while good for the most part, does seem a bit distorted in portions. It's sometimes scratchy, and you can hear instruments bloom and distort from time to time, moreso on the high & loud notes. I have many recordings from this era, and they typically sound better than this. This WAS recorded in Italy, and i'm not aware of what the Italian studios were like in the late 40s. Perhaps they didn't have quite the sound capability that American studios had at the time. Perhaps the originals were not stored well in Italy. I don't know.
It's not a bad enough problem to make me not want to listen to it, but it is unfortunate that i have some Benny Goodman Trio recordings from 10 years earlier that sound cleaner than this. I never buy bootleg recordings...only the ones released by the owning companies, who utilize original source materials. That having been said, i'm a bit disappointed. While i would still recommend this CD, i would also recommend some of the earlier Reinhardt stuff, especially from the late 30s. The sound quality on those is at least as good as the stuff on this 1949 disc.

Greatest Guitarist Ever! Great Packaging! Good Sound!.......2005-11-15
A must-have for Django fans.......2005-03-29
For "generalist" jazz fans, this CD will give a nostalgic taste of rhythms, textures and sounds of another time - delivered by the best. For Django and Stephane's aficionados, these tracks are a gem. Django's playing is red hot yet polished, crisp and precise, and continues to amaze for the sheer richness of his inexhaustible ideas both as a soloist and an accompanist. Stephane once again proves why he was the indisputed genius of the jazz violin - never missing a beat, a quarter-tone or an opportunity to say something fresh, new and heartfelt.
The all-Italian rhythm section is in style and non-intrusive, allowing the two stars to express themselves to the fullest while providing great steady support. The occasional piano solo is delivered beautifully in a very personal style, with techniques clearly reminiscent of a strong classical background.
Sound-wise, a great effort was made to rid the old recording of white noise and hissing. I am extremely pleased with the result - Django's Selmer guitar and Stephane's magic violin come across crisp and clear.
Listen to "Minor Swing" or "I'll never be the same" if you want to get a chill up your spine. This CD helps understand why Django is, to this day, the most influential jazz guitarist who ever lived.
A good introduction to Django Reinhardt.......2003-03-07
It takes a couple of spins to get to know this album. I had never listened to DR before. The music reminded me of what Don Ho would play on his ukelele during his TV show run. Only when you realize when it was recorded can you appreciate the innovation of his music. Jazz is American in creation. It is also quite rhythmic in tempo. Reinhardt and other Europeans broke that convention with arrythmic variations to their music.
I may be wrong, but, Django's influence can be detected in Led Zeppelin of all places (Jimmy Page using a bow on his guitar!).
All in all if you want to learn about European Jazz this disc is a good place to make a start.

Overall, this is just one of those recordings that as a jazz fan you have to own. It's a classic on anyone's list and RVG does another fantastic job as the "messenger" releasing it to sound as perfect and clear as if you were in the studio listening to it live. These guys were some kind of foursome and although I am huge fan of the horns, I still put these four at the top of my list of all-time favorite quartets. I highly recommend that if you are new to jazz and do not own this album then please purchase it immediately. You won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
the way brouwer meant it to sound.......2003-11-03
Papandreou has a great sonority, an unbelievably balanced and astonishing technique, and most of all a profound interpretation. Brouwer himself once stated in an interview that his music is really easy to interpret, if you just play what he mentions in his partitures. Of course this is a little bit to modest of the great composer, but he obviously wanted to make clear that he wants the preformer to play exactly what's in the score, and this is, contrary to a bunch of other guitarists, certainly what Papandreou does on this cd. You can hear every little musical instruction brouwer put into his scores, plus a profound understanding of all the secrets of the pure magic this music holds.
Add to this the low price of this record, and you get a 5*-buy.

Album Description
With their eighth release, Pearl Django is broadening their musical horizons. The new CD features three guest artists and some exceptional new compositions by members of the group. The wonderful French guitarist from Paris, Patrick Saussois, joins Pearl Django on three tracks and has contributed an original tune to the mix. His compelling roots in this music make him one of the elite of European gypsy jazz guitarists. One of Seattle's best drummers, Mark Ivester, is featured on five tracks of Chasing Shadows. And accordionist, David Lange, who can be heard on previous Pearl Django CDs, contributes some of his most tasteful playing ever. Overall, Pearl Django's best and most eclectic disc yet.Customer Reviews:
