    Product Description

There's something almost primal about Johnny Burnette and the Rock'n'Roll Trio, and it's not just the fact that these recordings were done more or less at the dawn of rock. It could be that two-thirds of the trio (Dorsey and Johnny Burnette) were feuding brothers; rock history is replete with those, from Don and Phil Everly to Ray and Dave Davies to Phil and Dave Alvin to Liam and Noel Gallagher. Somehow, brawling musical sibs seem to bring out the best in each other. But it's more than just that. The Burnettes' Coral sessions provide a unique insight into the building blocks of rock, before the days of overdubs, multi-tracking and synthesized anything. When the trio's guitarist Paul Burlison wanted to recreate a particular "buzzy" sound, he reached into his amp, grabbed a fistful of tubes and wires and yanked. It worked. This music isn't cerebral. It's as if they opened up an artery and let the music throb out. If you ever loved Aerosmith's version of "The Train Kept A'Rolling" (or the Yardbirds', or Zeppelin's), you're in for a treat; in fact, it's the same treat that caused those bands to record that tune. The energy and vitality of these sides, nearly half a century after they were first recorded, just can't be denied.

Rhino has lovingly created this compilation of the Dorsey brothers' film music, and the resulting 21 tracks all make for a fun listen of some of the finest musical work the siblings performed. Tunes from Jimmy's I Dood It ("Star Eyes," "So Long, Sarah Jane") and Lost in a Harem ("Noche de Ronda," "I Know It's Wrong") and Tommy's Thrill of a Romance ("Battle of the Balcony Jive," "The Guy with the Slide Trombone") are all highlights. The pair's melding of Dixie and pop idioms is near perfect. And though it's an album of contrasts--Jimmy's ensemble specialized in playing fast and swinging hard, while Tommy's went for mood and tone--all of the tunes originate from the early '40s, a great vintage when both Dorseys were in their prime, working for MGM. Nostalgia abounds. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars tommy and jimmy dorsey.......2004-07-27

this CD is tremendous. 'well, git it' and 'one o'clock jump' are highlights as are 'star eyes' and 'opus one'. the swinging in stereo is great; i could play this CD every week and never get tired of it. the dorseys never disappoint. this CD could make a fan out of someone who never even heard of the dorsey brothers.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-03-10

Along with every one else's comments, some of these tracks are true STEREO recordings! Much, much better sounding than what the record companies were offering at the time!

    5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Galore.......2004-02-14

SWINGIN IN HOLLYWOOD is unique because it features some of the best of the Dorsey brothers from the days when they were in their prime plus good music from World War II era movies. There is plenty of nostalgia here for both big band fans and movie buffs. The vocalists include Bob Eberly, The Pied Pipers, Helen O'Connell, Dick Haymes, Nancy Walker, Jo Stafford, Paul Carley, Marilyn Maxwell and Bob Allen.

The Dorsey brothers made eight films for MGM. Jimmy specialized in speed as in "One O'Clock Jump" from the movie I DOOD IT in 1943. Tommy was a master of mellow sounds as in "Katie Went To Haiti" from the film DUBARY WAS A LADY which was also made in 1943.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Them Dorsey boys sure knew how to SWING IT!.......2002-06-22

If you want to know what SWING and The Big Bands were all about, then get this phenomenal CD. It presents original soundtrack performances recorded by both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey with their respective bands during the 1940s at MGM. Most of these tracks have never been released before, and if you're used to hearing this kind of music in scratchy form derived from old discs, wait until you hear the crystal clarity of the selections here. My favorite track? The unbelievable break-neck speed performance of "One O'Clock Jump" by Jimmy and his boys. You can't go wrong with this CD. A winner!

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!! Dorseys.......2002-04-28

Rino-RD75283 Really great bands, when the music world revolved around Big Bands. Movies! Glitter! Fun!! Both Dorseys, Jimmy and Tommy. Made some good movies and truly great Swinging and Romantic music.
The extended version of Jimmy's One O'clock Jump is worth the price by itself.

You would probably like Hep CD59, also, The two great bands on the smame shows from Casino Garden September 1946. Battle of the bands. Let the battles begin!!!

5 out of 5 stars * EARLY DORSEYS REALLY WERE FABULOUS *.......2004-01-08

This is a fantastic compilation of the Dorsey Brothers' early hot jazz work. This stuff was not "swing" done by big orchestras, but rather what I would call "hot chamber music." The songs are gorgeously crafted miniature gems which are intense and exiting, while at the same time maintaining a relaxed, loose feeling. Each and every arrangement has something fascinating and attractive about it. And the musicians, oh lord, the musicians. These are less Dorsey Brothers recordings, than they are all-star small hot band summits. On any given song one may hear the likes of Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti, Bunny Berigan, Bud Freeman, Jack Teagarden, Adrian Rollini and on and on.

The more commercial side of the Dorseys can be heard on a small handful of tracks featuring some harmless, but dated singers such as Smith Bellow (more of the Dorseys in support of pop singers can be heard on the Collector's Choice disc "Essential Dorsey Brothers"). These tunes I usually program out, as the bulk of the music is still astoundingly fresh sounding. There are also a few real vocal gems (though the set is predominantly instrumental) such as two jazz numbers with the rhythmically and tonally enlightened Bing Crosby, and three remarkably complex and incomprehensibly hot numbers with the Dorsey's ultimate vocal collaborators, The Boswell Sisters.

Listen to a song like Beebe, with Jimmy Dorsey's amazingly nimble alto sax and clarinet work and understand why Charlie Parker admired him. Hear Dippermouth Blues and understand how these hot young white kids took the inspiration of the eternal jazz king Louis Armstrong and made something not derivative, but rather fascinating and creative in it's own right.

These tracks, from 1928 to 1935, represent some of the very finest small group hot jazz of all time. Listening to this music, one could be forgiven for wishing that the Big Band swing era (for which these two brothers are now best remembered) had never come.

This is the fourth and concluding volume in Jazz Oracle's series on the Dorsey Brothers. By far the best session is the July 15, 1930, date recorded in London with Jimmy Dorsey and a Spike Hughes-led rhythm section. Five selections (one alternate take) were made, and they all swing mightily. Jimmy plays both alto and clarinet on each tune (switching from one to the other with lightning speed), and these recordings are magnificent. The remaining selections don't come close to these sides in quality, though some have their moments. All are big band recordings, all feature vocals, all are pop tunes of the day. Bunny Berigan is on many of them, however, and occasionally he takes a brief solo that adds interest (SHE REMINDS ME OF YOU, JUDY, and I'VE HAD MY MOMENTS are good examples). Only a few sides offer no jazz interest at all; the rest reveal glimpses here and there of jazz flavorings. This is dance band music with only a few titles coming under the "hot" description. Dorsey fans will enjoy this CD as will dance band aficionados. The jazzier sides appear on the earlier Jazz Oracle issues.

I was so excited to see this album in a CD format. Unfortunately, it was not the same as the original. Firstly, the track 'Wagon Wheels' was omitted from this version. Secondly, the orginal liner notes, dating from the time of this recording(1956) have also been omitted, instead opting for a history of the band. Rather disappointed, I must say.
