Simply a wonderful CD.......2006-05-03

This was a marvelous piece of work. The vocals were excellent and as usual anything Jordi Savall touches shines. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have listened to it three times in the past week and each time something missed is noticed. It is hard to believe this piece dates back to medieval times. It is simply a masterpiece.

The longest running show in Europe..........2004-08-10

Some time in the thirteenth century a soldier named Francesc Canto patrolled the waters off of Elche ('Elx' in Catalan), Spain for maurading pirates. A vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to him, and soon after he found a casket. It contained the music and text for the Misteri D'Elx, recorded on this CD. More than a bit of legend doubtlessly pervades this account, but visitors to Elche can still hear the piece performed every year around mid-August (good luck finding tickets). The Misteri D'Elx miraculously remains Europe's longest running religious show thanks in part to Pope Urban VIII who excepted it from the Council of Trent's ban on theatricality within church walls in 1632. It survived the rise and fall of the Spanish Empire, the Franco years, and it just keeps on going and going year by year to the present day. Young boys still play and sing the female roles, including the Virgin Mary, by tradition (which may raise some eyebrows). UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recognized the piece in 2001 as a piece of the heritage of humanity, likely ensuring it another 800 years or more of performance.

The entire festival takes place on two successive nights. This CD contains music for the first part only, la Vespra, performed on the first day of the Elche festival. The second part, la Festa, follows on the proceeding evening (can we look forward to a companion CD in the future?). Both parts together tell the story of the death, assumption, and coronation of the Virgin Mary. La Vespra ends with the Virgin's death, surrounded by the Apostles (summoned by an angel), who vow to bury her in Jehoshaphat, as she requested.

The music moves along slowly. No toe tappers here. Track twelve turns four lines of text into over six minutes of music. Many of the other tracks follow similar methodical and plodding rhythms. The tone and mood inspire awe, contemplation, and reverence for the depicted story. Don't expect to dance. Expect to contemplate and follow the soaring and swooping melodies gorgeously performed by Montserrat Figueras, Arianna Savall, and others accompanied by the always incredible La Capella Reial de Catalunya. Jordi Savall, in the CD book, says he wanted to break the 'unjust old ban' of females from the performance of this piece, and that 'the expressive power and intense spirituality inherent in the symbolism of these characters, particularly in the Virgin and the Angel, required the presence of the female dimension'. The results don't disappoint. Fans of intensely beautiful singing will appreciate every second of this CD. Montserrat Figueras, as the Virgin Mary, and Arianna Savall, as the Angel, give amazing performances throughout. Repeated listenings evoke more and more.

To fully appreciate this piece, follow along with the words at least once (use the Catala column as reference). This bridges the text and music and brings the entire piece to life. Almost exclusive vocal works, such as this one, typically rely on the text to illuminate the melodies to greater heights. The improvised accompaniment of La Capella de Catalunya adds to the effect.

Lastly, Savall and Company call this an homage or tribute to the Misteri D'Elx. In other words, they may have taken some liberties with the structure and music of the piece as performed in Elche. Knowing this group, however, such liberties will result in nothing more than amazing music and performance.

Mysterious and beautiful.......2004-08-02

The vocal soloists on this disc are amazing. I have followed the recording career of Arianna Savall from the beginning, and I must say that nepotism plays no part; she deserves every solo she has. Singing side by side with her mother, it is hard to choose a favorite. Generally, Savall's voice is prettier and her technique a bit more solid, while Montserrat Figueras specializes more in the emotional aspect of the music. On this disc, they are evenly matched; the mother's voice sounds better than it has in years, and the daughter's performance is so hauntingly emotional that it leaves the listener holding their breath. Comparing the two is nearly impossible. They are unmatched in this repertoire.

Ironically, they are part of the reason I cannot give the album 5 stars; their main solos come at the beginning of the work and leave the listener a feeling a bit disappointed that the rest of the disc doesn't quite live up to them. However, I would still strongly recommend this disc to anyone.

Joe Lopez and his new band were in town a couple weeks ago and they kicked some (...)! I'm glad to see he can still rock Tejano on time. His new drummer looks like Newman from Seinfeld.

La importancia de Joe López en la musica Tejana.......2001-08-25

Hemos leido algunas opiniones criticando el último disco de Joe López. Al respecto quisiera hacer el siguiente comentario: Hasta la aparición de Joe López, Jimmy González y el grupo Mazz, la música chicana propia, realmente no existía. Los musicos o grupos de la época anterior a Mazz, como Little Joe, Freddy Martínez, Sony Ozuna, Joe Bravo, Tony de la Rosa, etc, realmente no tenían un perfil propio en su musica. La mayoría de las letras, canciones y musica, era en realidad musica mexicana antigua, de josé Alfredo, Cuco Sánchez, etc, con algunos arreglos algo novedosos en metales, pero solo eso. En una sociedad moderna, donde los mexicoamericanos se integraba a una sociedad americana cosmopolita, la raza no tenia una musica propia, actual, moderna, acorde a su realidad y circunstancia. Es asi que, cuando en 1978 irrumpe Mazz en el escenario musical, con letras y canciones modernas, con un estilo musical único y diferente, con arreglos bien elaborados, con calidad instrumental y una voz fresca y cálida, la musica chicana adquirió entonces su propio estilo; el sonido tejano, Texmex,le llamarían después. De hecho, el grupo Mazz fue el primer grupo que introdujo el uso del sintetizador en la musica de grupos. después, incorporó antes que nadie el acordeón en su musica. En resumen, a partir de Joe López, Jimmy González y el Grupo Mazz, la musica Tejana adquirió un sello y estilo propio. El estilo único de Mazz, fue el molde donde todos los grupos y cantantes actuales chicanos, han forjado su exito, ese es el mérito de Mazz y debemos reconocerlo. Si nos fijamos bien, no hay un grupo chicano actual que no esté influenciado por el Grupo Mazz.la calidad musical de Mazz, instrumento por instrumento, ha sido superior a cualquier grupo, y eso ha quedado patente en los muchos discos que han grabado. Si no ha logrado llegar al lugar que merece ha sido por razones ajenas a ellos; falta de representantes dinamicos. La musica chicana, a partir de Mazz, ya nunca será igual. Por eso es importante escuchar a Joe López, siempre será valioso y reconfortante escuchar el talento y la musica de Joe López. Claro que nunca será lo mismo sin Jimmy González, Mazz siempre será único.Sin embargo lo menos que podemos hacer, es reconocer la enorme y definitiva aportacián de estos musicos a la musica Chicana. Joe López, Jimmy González, el Grupo Mazz, Chris Sandoval y el "Flaco" Jimenez, tienen ya un lugar especial en la historia de la musica Tejana. por estas razones, cuando se quiera criticar el trabajo de estos musicos, habrá que hacerlo con mucho cuidado, y estar bien informados antes de emitir cualquier opìnión. Además,las canciones incluidas en los últimos discos de Joe López y Jimmy González, sólo vienen a corroborar que éstos aún tienen mucho que aportar a la musica Tejana. Gracias.

MAZZ FUERTE QUE NUNCA.......2001-06-10

After waiting for Joe to come out with a new CD after breaking up with Jimmy, I was very disappointed. I think that Joe's voice is weak to say the least. He seems to be unsure and there's not much feeling to his voice. The band is very weak on the majority of the tracks and lacks excitement. Hopefully this isn't the end for Joe but he's following in the footsteps of other older artists that abused their voices with drugs or alcohol and lost their touch.

Hot Latin Jazz/Salsa that produces an intoxicating effect........1998-05-05

California conguero Poncho Sanchez delievers a strong Latin sound unlike any other Latin Jazz artist out there. "Fuerte" (Spanish for strong) is powerfully intense. It is like taking normal salsa and adding a shot of dark rum. This music is the type of music that should accompany an action sequence in a movie. Not only is this album intense, but it also full of positive messages and cacthy refrains. I recommend this to any open-minded person looking for something different.

I don't need to say much, as you can easily read other people's reviews. All of them give it 5 stars, and this CD is truly worthy of them. It's a true masterpiece as every song is sung beautifully and with so much emotion, you can't bring yourself to turn the CD off.

Spanish female singer with a great voice. The songs are very rhythmic, exciting and sensual. Noelia can wonderfully let roll the "R". Her Spanish temperament is overtly expressed. My favorite songs are "Golpeando fuerte" (Strongly Struck), "Fuera" (Outside), "Me faltas tu" (I Need You), "Ni una Lagrima mas" (Not One More Tear) and "El Suspiro de un Angel" (The Sigh Of An Angel).

This is most definitely her best work to date. The songs are catchy, very upbeat; some of them could be called modern classics. The only con with this wonderful album is the lack of a ballad with the beauty of 1999's "Tu"--though there are some exceptional ones to be had on this album

NOELIA VIENE "GOLPEANDO FUERTE".......2001-03-19

Esta produccion esta excelente de principio a fin. Noelia ademas de ser hermosa tiene voz increible. Si la primera produccion de Noelia estuvo buenisima, esta sin duda alguna esta mucho mejor. Todos los temas que componen este disco esta excelentes, pero los mejores son "Ni una lagrima mas", "Fuera", "Golpeando fuerte", "A toda maquina" y "El suspiro de un angel". Recomiendo este disco a los amantes de la balada y el pop, en fin a los amantes de buena musica. EXCELENTE DISCO! Tambien recomiendo los siguietes CD's: "Pasional" de Jessica Cristina, "Eterno" de Luis Fonsi, "Mis mejores exitos" de Millie y "Subir al cielo" de MDO.
