Kenny Drew brings a pure bop angularity to this 1956 session, with driving single-note lines that clamber over one another to get at a new rhythmic detail, along with splashing chords that find the joy in the blues. He's joined by a rhythm section that virtually defined the mid-1950s ethos: bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, Miles Davis regulars and a frequent tandem on sessions of the day. Chambers provides his own significant solo input as well as superb bass lines, while Jones adds untold vitality here, furiously knitting a polyrhythmic backdrop that seems to collide and expand on Drew's lines at every point of contact. No pianist could ask for more (though some might ask for less), and it's apparent why Jones was a favorite of pianists from Bill Evans to Elmo Hope. Drew's boppish, Powell-inspired playing shines on Ellington's "Caravan," while he's close to the essence of Monk on "Ruby, My Dear." It's a classic session by a pianist whose long European residence meant that he was unjustly neglected at home. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Hats off to Kenny Drew Jr. et al.......1999-12-10

I love this sound. Complex cords and interesting scales put to work by talented people. There are quite a few people making this sound, but this is the first trio recording I've found where they managed to pull off the complexity and still swing (every time) while staying within the bounds of traditional jazz. Kenny Drew Jr. is in excellent form. If he keeps making records like this one, I'll buy every one.

      5 out of 5 stars From a Friend.......2006-02-28

A friend gave me this CD years ago and it has gone on to be a favorite. While its easy its never dull. The whole CD has an amazing feel to it,full, dense but never heavy. The music as played has a lot of interest.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent jazz piano trio and great songs.......2002-08-13

I've had this CD for years now and I still listen to it. It has some originals, some jazz standards (like Shadow of your Smile) and even a "jazz version" of a Mozart piece! (Theme from Elvira Madigan is actually a movement from a Mozart Piano concerto). The entire trio is just excellent. Rosnes' piano playing is beautiful and the improvisations enjoyable to listen to. Pedersen on bass is excellent. I love all kinds of jazz and this is one of my all time favorite jazz CDs.

3 out of 5 stars Very smooth to very swinging. Easy to listen too........1998-07-16

By far the best tune and the one that shows the ability of the entire trio is the really swinging version of an old standard, "Lullaby of the Leaves". The feel is captured from the first chord. Kenny, the signature tune, is well thought out and the arrangement flows. In all, a good addition to any music collection. Get it now.

5 out of 5 stars Best piano trio album of the 1950's.......2007-07-19

This is upbeat bop. Reviewer below who loves Pal Joey should stick with his fairy land Broadway musicals.

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable bop oriented set .......2006-10-07

This is a pretty enjoyable bop oriented set from the Kenny Drew Trio which consists of Kenny on Piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Chambers and Philly Joe work well together as usual and Kenny seems inspired by their fire. The high points of the album are Drew's interpretation of the classic Ellington Tune "Caravan" and Drew's composition Wierd-o. Drews playing on both is fantastic and Chambers offers a nice bowed solo on wierd-o. Not exactly an essential recording to have, but one that fans of Drew or the consistently amazing Chambers/Jones duo may want to check out.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-02-08

The sound samples speak for themselves. This is straight ahead jazz from the fifties played by jazz masters. The recording quality is good. My favorite recording of Kenny's is Pal Joey, but this is still a great record.
