As you might expect, Timeless isn't your parents' Sergio Mendes. Take "Mais Que Nada," the opener from that topselling staple of post-60s, post-bossa, near-kitsch Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits. Here it's no simple, slinky groove. The Black-Eyed Peas are along for the bumpin' ride. What it amounts to is the same intercultural collision that happened when bossa nova met jazz and pop via Stan Getz's tenor sax, except here the meeting is between the lounge and, presumably, the street. John Legend and India.Arie keep the session on a downtempo, neo Brazilian vibe on "Please Baby Don't" and the title track (respectively). Once those are tunes end, though, it's back to the bump and the beats and the irresistible party vibe of the set. Don't fret, though, as the Peas keep things light enough to trigger innocent headbobs and chilled out dance steps. Just as you might hear Timeless and agree that it ain't your parents' Sergio, your parents can also hear will.i.am's and the Peas's pivotal roles and say that it's not their kids' Black-Eyed Peas, either --Andrew Bartlett

Description

Timeless is the magnificent new album by the legendary Sergio Mendes. Produced by and featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, this album is a wholly original synthesis of music from the man who--40 years ago--brought Brazil 66 and "Mas Que Nada" to the world. Timeless beautifully blends the urban culture of Brazil, samba and bossa nova with the urban culture of America, hip hop and rap, the results of which are truly spectacular.

Putting together the project, Will and Sergio, of course, brought in the Black Eyed Peas. They also recruited some of the biggest urban-pop artists of the last several decades, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks. Featured artists include Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, India.Arie, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and members of the Roots and Jurassic 5.

4 out of 5 stars Street meets the bossa beat---4.5 stars.......2007-07-02

I didn't like Sergio growing up in the day, I was a Motown fan and couldn't get down with bossa nova or latin beats. "Timeless" manages to keep some of the sound of the old Brazil 66 and add some new flavor via Stevie Wonder who was one of my faves back then. Of course, they've brought in John Legend with some new soul. Then, they top that off by bringing in the Black Eyed Peas, who I'd never have thought of, and the concept just works.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-05-16

This album is a classic! My kids actually introduced me to the album. I'm a Sergio Mendes fan from way back. Buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-10

I am a 52 y/o old fart but once was a cool college d.j. I am not a big rap/hip-hop fan but it sounds fantastic combined with a latin groove. When I was spinning LP's in the late 70's, we thought Sergio Mendes had "sold-out" to pop. What did we know? His music, whether "roots" or "pop" is absolutely beautiful. I admire the creativity of the artists who have made the Timeless CD worthy of its title.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastico!! Eu amo Brasil!.......2007-05-08

This album is off the hook! I never knew this hidden gem was so good. It is amazing what Will.I.Am and Sergio did. There are so many songs that are my favs such as Mas Que Nada, The Frog, that Samba Song, and etc. There is a great compilation of rap, samba, bossa nova, singing, and etc. Black Eye Peas, Q-Tip, Black Thought (Roots), John Legend, and etc. makes this a wonderful compilation and celeration of the beautiful Brazilian culture.

My wife is Brazilian and we love the album so much we even played some of it at our wedding reception. This album should be selling a lot more and deserve worldwide acclaim. Sergio Mendes "Timeless" is truly the best kept secret...you gotta listen to this!

5 out of 5 stars An aptly-titled album from a timeless artist.......2007-03-17

Mendes's "Fool on the Hill" was one of the first albums that this then fifteen-year-old bought with his allowance. Thus began an almost forty-year love affair with the Brazilian's sound. One can't imagine my excitement when I learned of the release of "Timeless," his first album of new music in over a decade.

And what an album it is!!! The disc is an outstanding blend of the old and the new, with cuts to satisfy the contemporary crowd as well as those of us with nostalgia of the soul.

Though the album features guest performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake to Jill Scott to John Legend, the best cuts are those that harkens back to the cool 1960's, adding a new dimension with rap and modern rhythms. The revisit of "Mais Que Nada," "Berimbau/Consolacao" (featuring vocals by Gracinha Leporace and a killer hamonica solo from Stevie Wonder), "Bananeira," the title cut (with India.Arie on vocals), "Lamento (No Morro)," "Yes, Yes Y'All," and "Samba Da Bencao," are thrilling in every way and certain to appeal to an international audience.

Bravo for Mendes and, hopefully, with the utilization of modern stars, he will reach a young audience that will discover one of music's legendary innovators.

Album Description

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)—-the culmination of his "spoken word" manner—to the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedy—hence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20

Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

Those who love the quiet jazzy groove of bossa nova and the delicate voice of Caetano Veloso probably know about Vinicius Cantuária. A Brazilian songwriter who has written hits for Veloso and other countrymen, Cantuária's own music favors spare but by no means safe bossa nova-based arrangements that gently push at the music's edges without making a stink about it. Like the classics, nothing is rushed; there is no shouting. Here there is the whispered voice, gentle percussion, swingin' guitar, bass and a few other bits of sound filigree that float in and out. While recent efforts have an arty electronic sheen on the surface, Horse and Fish is almost all acoustic, the notable exception being Cantuária's airy Bill Frisell-like electric guitar tone on some material. Highlights include the gutsy remake of Gilberto Gil's "Procissao," the upbeat "Cubanos Postizos" and "Look The Sky." This one will creep inside you with the subtlety of osmosis. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another off-center set by this Brazilian experimentalist.......2004-06-28

Another lowkey, jazz-tinged outing by this well-regarded Brazilian expatriate... Cantuaria has come a long way since his days as a percussionist in Caetano Veloso's late '70s band, and from his clunky early solo albums, where he tried to be a New Wave-y Brazilian answer to The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Here he settles deep into a mellow world-jazz mode, as heavily influenced by his recent collaborations with guitarist Bill Frisell as by the hovering, angelic spectre of the late Miles Davis. Longtime collaborator Paulo Braga anchors the album's percussive end, with Mauro Refosco and other folks in the Rio-by-way-of-NYC axis. Most of the songs are Cantuaria originals, while some well-chosen cover tunes -- moody renditions of Roberto Menescal's "O Barquinho," Gilberto Gil's "Procissao," a couple by Jobim -- highlight Cantuaria's ability to reimagine and refashion the visions of other artists. This is an album that will grow on you: songs that at first may seem slick and overly informed by commercial jazz styling take on a subtle gravity, as his profoundly calm, quiet approach slowly asserts itself. Give this disc a couple of tries, and it will richly reward you.

In the late '60s and '70s the funk and soul music of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and many other African American superstars sparked a cultural awakening of black pride around the world. In Brazil that awakening expressed itself in the music of young people of color from Rio to São Paulo, who Brazilianized those North American styles into their own groove thang. The result was a musical movement called samba soul, and this thrilling 16-track collection offers a sizzling, seductive, and syncopated snapshot of the best singles from the period. The genre emphasized snappy backbeats, deep and funky bass lines, and jazz horn sections with tinges of salsa and homegrown samba. Jorge Ben's uptempo "Cosa Nostra," performed by Erlon Chaves, was the anthem of the era, and organist Ed Lincoln's pioneering De Savoya Combo, along with Trio Mocoto, laid the foundations for the genre with their respective hits "Jogaram o Caxanga" and "Que Nega e Essa." The musical range of Samba Soul reaches from the CTI Records-sounding jazz fusion of Orlandivo's "Onde Anda o Meu Amor" to guitarist Bebebto's discofied shoutout to Africa, "Princesa Negra de Angola," and the proto-bossa nova of Wilson Simonal's "Não Vem Que Não Tem." The great Afro-Cuban conguero Mongo Santamaria is given tribute on Som Tres's south-of-the-equator boogaloo "Homenagem a Mongo." Today DJs from around the globe are sampling this music, but with this disc you can dance and trance to the real thing: a truly African American music on a hemispheric scale. Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A party on a CD. .......2006-09-14

I usually hate compilation albums, they include lots of things and artists I rather explore for myself in my own time and a lot more thoroughly. This disc, however, is different and spectacular. I am pig-ignorant about Brazilian music from the 1970s and I would never have stumbled across any of these artists on my own - especially considering I live in Australia. So a disc like this is both educational and highly entertaining for me. And OH how entertaining it is! This is the closest you'll ever get to a party on a CD. All the music is fabulous, cheeky, colourful, stylish and utterly groovy. Yeah, I know, that does sound naff, but believe me, this is a first class CD and one I listen to VERY often - especially when I'm entertaining or need a pick-me-up.

I defy anyone to sit still and listen to this entire album and not feel like getting up and dancing. I feel like getting up and dancing as I write this review - I have it playing on my CD player.

If you only buy one CD of Brazilian music in your entire lifetime, make it this one, please!

5 out of 5 stars My Brazilian Baptism.......2006-01-27

Pick this one up in a HURRY. Seriously, pick this up for the curiosity; pick it up for the island vibe; pick it up for the damn groove. Not sure what was being passed around in Rio De back in the day, but all these cats took a LOT of it. Banda Black Rio, Gal Costa, Dom Salvador. Some dude named Milton Banana - who cooks. And my favorite here, Orlandivo's "Onde Anda.." A very moody, trippy, keyboard freak out. Honestly, this music has to be heard to be comprehended. Feed your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ! ! ! .......2005-08-01

With a title like SAMBA SOUL 70 the CD just jumped off the shelf at me and right into my hands... O.K. to be a bit honest I'm not a HUGE fan of Brazillian music, but I know one thing for sure... it does mix well with SOUL and FUNK (one Japanese group called ORIGINAL LOVE proved this to me excellently a few years ago and I've been firmly in suspicion ever since that funky grooved up Brazillian music goes far beyond Sergio Menez !)

The music on this CD for the most part is a great mix of Jazzy Soul... not watered down latin Jazz, but great FREE SOUL... Its Funky and groovin' and with HIGH MUSICIANSHIP to boot... lot's of heavy percussion and tight snazzy JB/70s action move CHASE type incidental music, incredible rhythm guitar and some funky rhodes and clavs thrown in on occasion ! ! ! ... examples - - just to randomly pick a few... MARIA FUMACA - - a fantastic piece of Blackbyrds/FANTASY JAZZ type disco/soul... crisp rhythm, snazzy horn section... and yes, some really Jazzy keyboards and Rhodes... Next Princesa Negra de Angola (let me guess... this means Black Princess of Negola ???) -- with its JB type intro, the band cuts into a some pretty funky vamping and chanting, and again killer funky horns - - real party music with a touch of OSIBISA in the mix... next Negro Dito - - my gosh so sweet and funky this one with a raspy voice male singer answered Fela style by a cool chorus - - oh and dig the GROOVY opening track COSA NOSTRA... more solid party funk, heavy percussion, call respons vocals, horns and.... oh and the second track even includes a PRE-RAP Brazillian Rap that sounds almost like something De La Soul might have come up with ! I stop here not because the other dozen tracks aren't worth describing but because Amazon sets a limit to the length of reviews. Well let me throw in one more... Mane Joao... the sexy lady vocalists voice is padded with some mean horns, flute and rhythm guitar and some really wicked RHODES... - - This CD, in conclusion is a WINNER... I can't believe I've lived so long without out. VIVA BRAZIL... (oh in case you're hip to brazilian music... and admitedly I'm not... the groups and artists include ERLON CHAVES, WILSON SIMONAL, SOM TRES, DE MELO, WANDERLEA, DOM SALVADOR AND BANDA ABOLICAO, MILTON BANANA TRIO, BEBETO, CAL COSTA, BANDA BLACK RIO, TRIO MOCOTO and numerous others...)

4 out of 5 stars Great mix of 70's Brazilian Soul!.......2004-02-17

This is Brazil's answer to American Soul music from the 70's. It is funky like anything you would hear from the American Blaxploitation era. Each groove is catchy and although it is influenced by American soul music, it has a true Brazilian flair that makes it a style all its own. Brazilian soul music, like the songs found on this album, add elements of traditional Brazilian music to it, such as the usage of samba beats and the cuica (for those of you that don't know - it's that instrument that sounds like a monkey). I highly recommend checking this album out. It's well worth your money!

5 out of 5 stars super mix album.......2003-02-08

This is a superb album for anyone looking for great party music, or a sampling of Brazilian pop from the 70s. I've purchased many Brazilian collections, and this is perhaps the most consistent one on the market. The songs sound fresh and fun, the arrangements are always groovin', and the instrumentation and vocals are eclectic in the best way. While it does not showcase Brazil's most famous or sophisticated talents, it speaks very well of their home-grown pop-charts, where the bar is set very high.

I was exposed to Hermeto Pascoal's "Mundo Verde Esperança" while taking a class on Global Jazz. His music immediately appealed to me, not because I "got it", but because I had a reference for it. Sonically, his music reminded me of some of my favorite 70's fusion work. Bill Bruford's early solo material circa "Master Strokes" came to mind, as did some of Gentle Giant's instrumental work, but most strongly the reference I had (and still have) for Mundo Verde Esperança was Frank Zappa's instrumental work from the 70's.

Hermeto's compositional use of angularly extended melodies, his comfort with speech-related rhythms, and his overall choice of instrumentation brought to mind Zappa's work on "Hot Rats", "Waka/Jawaka", and "The Grand Wazoo". However, this similarity does not seem referential, but coincidental. While much can be found on the internet about Hermeto, for the limited purposes of an initial Amazon review, I find his formative years particularly compelling. In particular, it is interesting to consider the way that his path (which in some ways was diametrically opposite to Zappa's) came to produce such an immediately recognizable similarity.

Hermeto showed prodigious strength as a musician very early. His father exposed him to music on the 8-button accordion, at which he immediately excelled. However, his most important musical influences were even less formal. During the day, when most of his family was working in the sun, his albino condition forced him to take shade. To occupy himself during this time, he would experiment with found objects, creating new musical instruments to musically dialogue with his environment. The sounds of nature proved to be a profound influence on him, and he came to view all sounds as inherently musical. This perspective would affect his music as he continued his training, learning to formally read and write music later in life. Eventually, he evolved into a compelling and respected composer and multi-instrumentalist.

This self-directed and organic musical pedagogy that was closely tied to the sounds of nature lies in direct opposition to Zappa's distinctively Western technologically-based evolution. However, the end results yield compelling post-modern similarities. The "found" objects that influenced Zappas were pieces of recorded tape, whether it was speech (Lumpy Gravy) or the xenochronic interactions of unrelated musical events (Jazz From Hell).

Hermeto's found objects include teakettles played with tuba mouthpieces, squeak toys, and water-filled soda bottles. In addition, his melodic sense is informed by more traditional Brazilian music styles like the Choro. His angular, meandering, focused conception of melody and rhythm comes from these experiences. However, despite this disparity of experience, the sonic similarities he shares with to Zappa is compelling, even though they probably had little or maybe even no contact with each other. In both cases, tradition, environment, and "modernity" collided to create something that did not comfortably align itself with any of those narratives.

The Lowdown: While it is highly likely that many U.S. listeners are not familiar with Hermeto, this does not in any way reflect the vision and talent of this amazing musician. If you are a fan of 70s prog-jazz-fusion, you should absolutely check out this recording. His fascinating background is worth a web search. Hermeto has made many recordings, but this one is the easiest to acquire and is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Of course.......2006-05-10

I wouldn't expect anything less than something brilliant from Hermeto, especially after such a long recording drought. He is one of the greatest musical geniuses of the past century, capable of vast creative exploration while maintaining a level of accessability that many great creative musicians do not attempt. Of course this album is amazing, I would expect nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars Hermeto Pascoal-the legacy continues.......2004-08-23

This 2002 release was the first from Hermeto's 'Grupo' after a 10 year recording hiatus. The Grupo here is Hermeto, Fabio Pascoal (perc), Alexandre Marques (piano), Itiberê Zwarg (bass), Marcio Bahia (drums), and Vinícius Dorin (sax/flute). Also featured are members of Itiberê's 'Orquestra Família'(their first recording 'Pedra do Espia' is available here at Amazon), delivering incredible performances of fourteen tunes, each named for one of Pascoal's grandchildren.
The music here is fresh, challenging, and inspiring; everything you would expect from 'O Bruxo'. The musicianship is virtuostic; especially from the 'Orquestra' members, none of whom is over 25 years of age! This, along with all the great musicians to have passed through Hermeto's tutelage, is Hermeto's legacy; his 'Universal Music' will live and grow forever.
A must for any Hermeto collection; and required listening for jazz fans who want to discover contemporary Brazilian improvised music.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but not 100% great.......2007-07-12

This CD was certainly a great purchase, but it is not the kind you buy and enjoy all the songs in the exact same way. It mixes well samba songs with a few which are more pop-samba oriented. I am rating it as a 4 because I personally don't like this extinct group called Os Mutantes and would easily replace the songs of Bebeto and Copa 7 by songs of more expressive Brazilian samba/pop artists.

5 out of 5 stars Samba Soul Grooooove.......2004-05-28

Samba Soul distinguishes it self from Caipirinha and The Girls from Ipanema because of its uniqueness. Samba, unlike Bossanova brings out a rhythm that can't keep you still. Samba Soul Groove will bring out your party mood into full gear. This Cd collectively gathers the best of Samba and its pop singles in one CD to make sure you can have a great time anywhere that its listened to. It is a great Cd that completes the Pure Brazil Collection.

This decidedly different facet of Brazilian music keeps the soft sounds and rhythms of the samba, but puts them quite firmly in a '90s context, with the loops, beats, and samples of electronica, hip-hop, and R&B as integral parts of the song. In other words, unlike much Brazilian music, this music looks ahead, rather than behind--for example, Fernanda Abreu takes the bass line for Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" for a remix of her song, and it works perfectly within a sensual groove. Given that more than 30 years have passed since Tropicalia, Brazil's last musical revolution, the time seems to be very ripe for a new generation to have its say. And the people on this compilation are very articulate indeed. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars STELLAR Sampler.......2004-03-24

I definitely agree with Larry - this is tremendous and was a very influential cd for me. Anyone looking to do a true sampler compilation should take a look at what Ziriguiboom did with this. Ziriguiboom/Crammed has basically partnered up with Six Degrees Records and release great artists on the labels. This was fantastic at getting the word out and made me look forward to hearing their artists that were coming out, like Zuco 103, Suba and Bebel Gilberto.

This sampler is from 1999 and was also a fantastic prelude to the nu-brazil sound/electric Brazil sound altogether. The cuts here by Bebel Gilberto and Zuco 103 are prototypes of songs on their respective albums - they aren't the same as the ones on their feature releases. Another artist that would release an extremely successful album was Suba, who featured Cibelle, Katia B and Joao Parahyba to name a few. Here you hear the ultra sexy "Voce Gosta". Andrea Marquee, who does "Carmesim" here (a breathtaking and breezy summer cut that's only on this cd) later went to Sterns, released "Zumbi" and has been huge in live theater productions... what a voice she has! Rounding out the impressive musical line-up is Lenine's rockin' tale of aliens arriving in Brazil, a pretty light modern sounding Daude track I love, Arnaldo Artunes with Marisa Monte (Tribalistas!) re-doing "Alta Noite" while Fernanda Abreu's seductive "take a Walk on the Wild Side" finishes up the vocal tracks. Arakatuba has an electric samba to conclude the cd... as interpreted by Fila Brazilia.

I HIGHLY recommend this cd. Even today it's great compared to other similar compilations at the time. Just look at what's happened to some of the musicians featured here since this release - most (actually, all of them) have released terrific cd's; some more dated than others. Just do a search on Amazon for the artists - it's really impressive IMO. If you like this, of the artists here I would recommend the artists works; especially Bebel Gilberto and Suba. Also if you're looking for something similar, Ziriguiboom released a sampler at the end of 2002 titled "Now Sound of Brazil" which features more artists from their label. Also check out 's "The Brazilian Vibe Experience". Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Yummy.......2003-05-30

I find it interesting that so many fans of Brazilian music disregard this collection as "inauthentic," "too electronic" or "too trendy." While it may lack the driving, infectious beats of samba or forro and the gritty, sweaty feel that sometimes goes along, the music often seems to me an extension of bossa nova: cool music for hot days. There are some very sweet tracks on here. It is a CD that doesn't demand much of you; it doesn't make you want to dance or thump something to keep time; mostly it makes you want to be somewhere breezy with a caprinha in hand -- beside a pool, say.

I'm not five-starring it because it's not wholly original: a couple of the tracks were a bit bland. But the rest were lovely, original gems. And the packaging rocks.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of the Brasil-Electro Samplers!!!.......2003-05-20

I can't believe the negative reviews below! This is the BEST CD sampler of ELECTRONICA BASS-A-NOVA that I've come across. Purists should look elsewhere. (Just because you happen to like Bo Diddley, doesn't mean you can't love They Might Be Giants or Radiohead too.) I, too, have over 100 Brasilian albums & CDs, but I still love this. I've had it for several years and it's a great introduction to a variety of new artists from Brasil including Lenine, Zuco 103, Smoke City, Suba, Arnaldo Antunes, Arto Lindsay, and Fernanda Abreu. It's full of modern electronica innovations, creativity, and rhythms. It's fantastic!

1 out of 5 stars AWFUL!!!.......2003-03-31

I have been a long time fan of Brazilian music and own a huge collection of cd's from ballads to pulsating carnaval music. I agree with the reviewer who said this was garbage. This is NOT Brazilian music. It is repetitive, electronic "sound" that can become annoying and very boring. It does not do justice to the mastery of the Brazilian musicians most of us admire. If you are searching for a better representation of Brazilian music I would recommend the cd "Chill Brazil".

4 out of 5 stars A niced middle ground between soul and modernization.......2003-01-09

A killer collection of Brazil's best new artists. Includes cult favorites such as Lenine and Arnaldo Antunes, as well as better-known musicians such as rocker Chico Science and novo traditionalist, Virginia Rodrigues. The emphasis here is on smooth soul, triphop, and novo bossa nova, and vague hints of the Brazilian electronica scene -- it's interesting that Brazilian pop, which has often stumbled so badly over cheesy overproduction, is now finding such fertile ground in the dreamy, slow, chill-room vibe... Although this album fudges a little to select mellower tracks by occasionally rowdier artists, it's a strong song selection, and flows well as an album. A sweet peek at some of the new stuff which can barely be heard outside of Brazil proper -- worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2004-04-17

This is an older compilation of Brazilian music, taking tracks from the 70's on up to the late 80's. With this in mind, don't expect to see any of the names from the 'new' explosion of music that came about in the nineties and early part of the new century.

And that's a good thing - I dig that it has some of the real, true Brazilian musicians, from Samba to MPB to even Bossa Nova. Stuff I heard when I was a kid... Some of my favorite tracks aren't necessarily the Beth Carvalho or Maria Bethania tracks - although I do like "Noite De Cristal" and the others are not bad. I really like Joanna's and this cd has my favorite rendition of Bala Com Bala as done by Joao Bosco. Gal Costa's dreamy vocals light up before that with "Bem Bom", and of course you can't go wrong with Bebel Gilberto's uncle, Chico Buarque who chips in a few songs of his own. You go in and out of so many styles of Brazilian music, from folk to tropicalismo to... virtually everything.

The downside to this? Like the reviewer before said, there's ony 10 or 11 different artists, so you're not getting thr full range of artists (like Gilberto Gil, Caetano, even Leila Pinheroetc). But IMO that's okay since some of these artists never became ultra publicized like Gil or Caetano in the US. I would certainly recommend this if you like the traditional and older sounds. Also check out a comp called "Spirit of Brazil" which is a double disc set with old school tracks like this but with Baden Powell, Djavan, etc. and then new school cuts by Da Lata, Truby Trio, etc. Also there's a compilation titled "Bossa Nova and Samba" done by Gold Collection which has a lot of MPB tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Brazil '66 gave way to commerical pop ballads of the 80s.......2005-05-20

In 1983, Sergio Mendes returned to the label where he made his most memorable music, A&M. Of course, A&M had changed mightily by then, it became rock-oriented outfit instead of the cottage Latin pop industry it had been in the '60s. But so had Sergio - and so, backed by an army of L.A. studio folk, Mendes tried to recapture the old sales magic on the market's own terms. Amazingly, he did, scoring a huge No. 4 pop hit with a saccharine ballad, "Never Gonna Let You Go," where Joe Pizzulo and Leza Miller sing their banalities while Sergio strums and comps on synthesizers!!!!!! To say that anyone could have made this record may be overstating the case, but the fact is that there is no way of knowing that this is a Sergio Mendes record without looking at the jacket. And that goes for most of the rest of the mediocre, electronically upholstered dance and ballad material on the LP. Oh, "Carnaval" has some rowdy samba fever at times, but it is so slickly produced that one can't abandon oneself to the spirit. Aviod this album if you looking for Latin Music Instead of Pop fluff that could be mistaken for a Air Supply album.
