Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

2 out of 5 stars Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

4 out of 5 stars complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

Throughout the history of jazz, mythical places like New Orleans's Storyville, Chicago's South Side, Kansas City's Tenderloin district, and New York's Harlem and 52nd Street were celebrated as the legendary hotspots. Thankfully, this impressive four-CD, 91-track collection featuring Nat "King" Cole, Louis Armstrong, and Benny Carter to name a few, puts Los Angeles's famous African-American enclave, Central Avenue, on the historical map and offers the listener a zoot-suited, jitterbugged jaunt through Club Alabam, The Downbeat, and other jumpin' joints where Hollywood stars rubbed shoulders with hep cats under a pulsating Pacific sky. The set covers an important period in the development of African-American music, from the conclusion of World War I to the birth of rock & roll: from the early New Orleans bouncy brass-band sounds of "Get Out of Here" by Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band and the Spanish-tinged, habanera syncopation on "Mamanita," courtesy of the pioneering pianist/composer Jelly Roll Morton to Lionel Hampton's boogie-woogie anthem "Flying Home" and the killer keyboard calisthenics on Art Tatum's "Tiger Rag." The Charlie Parker Septet's "Ornithology" blew into town on the wings of bebop innovation and hypnotized local up-and-comers like bassist Charles Mingus--under the moniker of Baron Mingus & His Octet on a rare side called "Bedspread"--and tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon's raw-boned tone on "Chromatic Aberration," which previewed John Coltrane's sheets of sound. Miles Davis's cool indigo-impressionism radiance on "Up in Dodo's Room," performed by the Howard McGhee Sextet, contrasts with the harmonic heights reached by the Gerald Wilson Orchestra's reading of "Groovin' High." There is a remarkable fluidity of transition from blues to R&B, as heard in the western wails on "Blues on Central Avenue" by Joe Turner with the Freddie Slack Trio, Nellie Lutcher's hip-bopping, tasty, and teasing "Fine Brown Frame" and the Texas-bred, guitar twang of T-Bone Walker's "Call It Stormy Monday," all of which highlight the sepia-toned, soulful syncretism that formed the bedrock of modern music and the marvelous black neighborhood that provided the foundation for it. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, historical jazz collection!.......2000-09-07

Central Avenue Sounds is more than a compendium of Los Angeles-based jazz from the 1920s-1960s. It's an historical documentation of an age and cultural environment that is sadly long gone and nearly forgotten. Although it stands on its own as an outstanding collection, buy this set with the book of the same title--"Central Avenue Sounds" edited by Clora Bryant (available here at Amazon)--for a multimedia journey back to a unique time and place. Highest recommendations!

As the man who originally fused Creole-Cajun music and R&B into a new form of music, Clifton Chenier deserved the title "King of Zydeco." When Chenier died in 1987, Rockin' Dopsie assumed the crown, and when Dopsie died in 1993, the question was, who would next take the throne? Boozoo, That's Who! is the answer, as this Lake Charles, Louisiana, veteran boils down the zydeco sound to a hypnotic accordion riff, a sing-along chant, and a stomping two-step beat. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars essential zydeco history........2006-01-13

      this is a good cd.
      zydeco is best live.
      both bands are hot.
boozoo at the peak of his early modern career,
when he was largely unknown outside SW LA, but a major
      deity 'back home'.
nathan was just 'coming up' as they say down there,
      he had something to prove.
boozoo just had to show he had it as usual.
both bands are very good on this.
boozoo especially was very energetic on this recording.
      get it.
      it;s essential zydeco history.
there is another double record like this featuring
willis prudhomme and john delafose, get that one too,
they are a 2 volume set really.
boozoo and john are both gone now, sadly.

      wle.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best place to start exploring zydeco.......2003-05-15

Like many regional folk music genres, zydeco's energy and charm can get lost in formal studio sessions. And even the best performers are prone to repetition--no problem when you're at a live, rump-shaking dance marathon, but an issue when you're listening in your car or living room. This CD solves both of those problems: it's a live recording split between two zydeco masters with distinct styles. The elder (and now late) Chavis is muscular, growly and rough; while younger Nathan delivers a faster, flashier zydeco, featuring Nathan's strange, sweet, nasally voice. The live recording puts you right in the middle of the Richard Club--you'll feel like you're sucking down a longneck and sweating on a hot Louisiana night.
Later in the '90s, the upstart Beau Jocque would give zydeco a strong stylistic kick in the pants, sparking a rap-style war with Chavis, and CDs from that period are worth checking out. But if you're new to zydeco, you should probably start here.

Braff and Elliott click nicely here, playing an excellent array of tunes. "Swing that music" does just that, and "When your lover has gone" gets a royal treatment. The sound is excellent.

Good Dixieland Music, typical of what was happening in New Orleans in the early 50's.As I,m addicted to the trombone I really enjoyed the work of Jack Delaney,Teagarden-like, but with lots of little surprises along the way. Also dig Boojie Centobie on clarinet.

My brother received this CD as a gift from his previous employer, Verizon. It sat on his shelf for a couple years, neither of us listening to it because, hey, it's New Orleans music. Is that really any good?

On a whim he put the CD in one evening and we started listening. On retrospect it was hysterical. We were both really digging the CD, but it isn't music two mid-twenty-something bachelors listen to. It's light, it's fun, it's non-abrasive, unoffensive jazz. Not our style. But we loved it. Neither of us would immediately admit to it, so we both were sitting quietly tapping our feet and nodding our heads, neither of us willing to stick his neck out and admit to liking such light and fluffy music.

Eventually, around track six-my personal favorite-one of us 'fessed up, and we now listen to it all the time. Not, you know, in public, but privately when no one is around to hear it, we really get into it. Honestly. There's dancing and everything.

I heartily recommend it to anyone who likes small-band jazz.
