This c.d. swing collection is pretty decent, but the remakes of some of the songs aren't as impressive as the originals. Nothing beats that classic swing, but next generation swing comes pretty close.

This is a fine cd to have on in the background, but bring it to the forefront and ther isn't much going on... Too bad this band has potential.

Music to me is the only game in town.......2003-11-29

Music to me is the only game in town. I have always placed music as a high priority in my life. From the time I was four, music captured my attention. The older I become, it seems like, the tackier the music I listen too. I think of music and all it's fantasies( I love elevator music so much). Music seems to keep me humming, especially stupid songs done in the simplist most feeble mided ways, I'm a feeble mided old fart, just kidding, actually I'm 19 yrs old. and this cd is not very swingin' only old farts will like this. Elevator swing music at it's best. 1 star of course.

This cd turned out to be a pretty good big band offering.......2003-01-24

Aw...Big band music! What can I say about you? To start with I would like to mention that big band music is what I cut my teeth on back in let's see, the 1940's. Has it been that long, well my calender says so. I guess the years have had a way of slipping by.

To talk about this new band is exciting for me. This is a great discovery for me and hopeful for you too.

The new leader, Craig Raymond is a gem. He is a trumpter and a great one at that. He really knows how to make his brass shine in more ways than one.

His suppporting cast is a fine blend of musicians. Some of the memebers are well seasoned, while others are just begining to bloom. They all have come together very well.

The repetoire that the band performs is a worthy one. I know most of these fine songs from days gone by.

Craig came up with some good charts for this recording. I looked at the credits on the inlet, but I wasn't familiar with his arrangers. That really doesn't matter, for the bottom line was that the arrangements were good and worked on most tunes.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Craig for his contribution to big band music and I hope he will plan to put some more recordings out with his band. I will plan to be the first in line to buy any more of his new cds.

You big band fans out there, listen up, this band is for real and you need to make them feel welcome.

Great fidelity, still swings, but be aware ..........2005-07-28

I'm fairly happy with this purchase. Overall, a nice collection of big band music.

The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra plays all the songs in the same arrangements as that of the various original artists who made each of the selections popular.

Yes, be aware ... these songs are not recordings by the original artists!

If you are looking for a collection of big band classics, recorded more recently so as to get the higher level of fidelity you are used to with modern recordings ... this might be your CD. The usual problem with modern recordings of big band music is that while the fidelity is better (none of that hollow hissing as in the originals - no offense to those who find this to be part of the "big band sound") the songs don't "swing" nearly as much as the originals from the 30s & 40s. However, as the arrangements are the same here, the recordings sound near identical to those by the original artists ... a positive I think as compared to other "collection" CDs where the performers have taken famous songs and done them their own way.

I was surprised though when I got my CD and found all the selections to be "live" versions. It's not really all that bad, just applause at the end of tracks. Just be aware ... I missed that when I first looked at the listing on Amazon.

Can't be "beat!" (aw that was a terrible pun).......2006-03-09

The only thing not "worth it" on this CD is the price. Thirty-something bucks is a bit steep. (I got it at a Virgin Megastore for &10!) Otherwise, a great CD with Kerouac readings interspersed with bop's greatest hits. The excerpts provide a lucid yet credible backbone (assuming you can take them seriously, not as period-piece fodder) for the body of works. The essay is also transcribed in the hefty booklet. My only complaint aside from the price is that it's an oversized box which doesn't fit into a CD rack.

But why complain when you have Dizzy, Miles Davis, Hamp, and Monk at hand!? You can't!

WOW! This CD envokes the same big band sounds which surrounded Frank Sinatra in the early sixties. The performances by singer Lou Dottoli only touch the surface of the talent he posesses. I, for one, look forward to another CD showcasing his talents against the backdrop of a swinging big band.
