After Tierney Sutton paid tribute to Bill Evans with Blue in Green, she salutes another of her influences with Dancing in the Dark, "inspired by the music of Frank Sinatra." The results are mellower than what Sutton fans might expect--it's less the hipster Sinatra than the one of such concept albums as In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning and Only the Lonely--and the tempos never rise above an easy swing. But it's a beautiful listen, and although there's an orchestra, it's not really a "with strings" album, which have been uneven throughout jazz history. Fewer than half the selections have strings, and those strings have been very subtly arranged (and conducted) by pianist Christian Jacobs. It's Sutton's usual trio--Jacobs, bassist Trey Henry, and drummer Ray Brinker--that is the primary accompaniment, and in Alec Wilder's "I'll Be Around" Jacobs shares a dazzlingly beautiful line with Sutton's wordless vocalise. And because "Fly Me to the Moon" has always been taken in either 3 or 4, Sutton acknowledges both by singing it in 7. Those are merely two memorable moments in an album that's full of them. --David Horiuchi

Initially took me several listens to warm up to this date,
but now, I love it. One has to be patient with it. I'm
now going to check out her Bill Evans cd. Her voice is
flawless. Give "Dancing" a chance and listen to it when
you're in a relaxed, mellow mood. I just recently have
gotten back to it after seeing it in the female singer
area of my collection; had only listened to it once before
and not given it a proper chance. It's a winner.

Carrying a Concept Too Far.......2006-12-14

This CD is disappointingly one-dimensional. Every song is presented at about 1/2 (or less) the tempo at which these songs are normally sung. While it can be interesting to sing a song at an unexpected tempo on occasion, Ms. Sutton's decision to give nearly every song on this album exactly the same treatment results in mind-numbing monotony. As much as I love her beautiful voice, I find this CD almost impossible to listen to all the way through. I'm glad this was not the first Tierney Sutton CD I heard, or I would be convinced that she is incapable of any range or creativity.

Her finest album as of yet..........2005-09-11

This is an exellent release, because Sinatra recorded so many great songs, Sutton had many to choose from. No, Sutton does not phrase like Ol' Blues Eyes, and that is why this cd is so great! Every jazz singer, or I should say any decent jazz singer today is on some level influenced by Sinatra, and it is great to hear Sutton's take on Sinatra's signature tunes, without turning into a lounge swinger herself. A great album, by a truly great jazz singer. This cd is very subtle and extremely romantic.

Excellent renditions of old, but certainly not tired, standards. Tierney Sutton, along with several others, have breathed new life into songs that have been around for a while and, in some instances, been beaten up by lesser performers.

The CD is OK.......2005-07-04

All I can say about Ms. Tierny is that she has a nice, mellow voice, but songs that can be sung in 3 minutes take her 5 minutes. She drags out all of the songs on this CD. I was very disappointed that I paid money for music to sleep to!

The first time I heard this CD I thought it was quite OK. The more I listen
to it, the more I love it!
My favorites songs are #1 (by The Cruxshadows), #9 (by Behind the Scenes), #12 (by Lunascape) and # 17 (by Corvus Corax), but all of them are good.
Good for dancing, good as ambiance music for a party, good for reading, some of the songs are even good for meditation... Very versatile.

A break from the usual "gothic" mix..........2006-10-04

Ok, so I picked this CD up on a whim at a Hot Topic store where I live at about the same price, six dollars or so. With the CD in my car as I drove home, I found myself skipping the first few tracks, passing them off as the usual "goth rock" dross. But when my cd player reached track 10, with Corvus Corax's "Venus Vina Musica," I found myself hard pressed to cease my spontaneous motion, driven by the blasting pagan/tribal drums in the song. Track eleven is also inruiging, with it's middle-eastern influenced vocals. Upon reaching track twelve "dragonfly," one may hear the harmonious sound of a sequenced piano, melding into a beautiful and very well-made EBM track. The brooding and throbbing bass of "Wo Versteckt Sich Gott" will move you and at the same time, make you wish you knew German. And after hearing all of this, I started at the beginning of the cd, and found that I didn't have much negativity to speak of the cd in general. The genres presented here are far beyond the goth cd I though this was, and the last track on the cd proves this. This cd is an eclectic, mistifying, exciting, and memorable mix wehich is well worth it's price.

Buy this cd, enjoy the sounds, and experience the pleasure of a darkened room with this enlightening music.

Oh, and the cover model is Kristanna Loken ("T-X" from Terminator 3), who makes the cd all the more... pleasurable.

Hotter Than Summertime!.......2006-06-27

Kudos to Dancing Ferret for releasing a budget priced compilation with a little of everything for everyone! Even those who do not have a penchant for dark music will find many of the tracks approachable. There is no doubt that many of the tracks featured here will find there way into the underground clubs to last throughout the summer and beyond.

All the details were carefully monitored from musical quality and content to the artwork and multimedia footage of the film The Dragon King.

You simply can't go wrong for the price and chances are you will want to discover the full body of work from many of the artists included here.

This was my first exposure to Tierney Sutton and certainly won't be the last. I continue to be amazed at the sound quality from SACD. Tierney's renditions of Frank Sinatra songs are outstanding. A truly enjoyable listen!!

Great interpretations.......2006-11-12

Fred Hersch is a very accomplished piano player. On this outing he selects jazz standards for his trio and arrives at a great place with them. The title track alone is worth the price of admission but everything is good here. Fred plays with a quiet passion and intensity on some very lyrical interpretations. On a few cuts you can definately hear the Bill Evans influence. I can't think of a better jazz piano master to be influenced by. The trio feeds well off each other and puts their own stamp on these tunes. Great piano jazz trio music.

Great Stuff.......2000-08-31

As usual, Fred displays his unique interpretation of old songs. This rhythm section is great, providing a solid, yet pervious foundation. It is great to hear Fred's contrapuntal improv interweaved with bass & drums. His stuff really works!

The recording quality itself is unique -- to my ears it sounds like it was recorded in a wooden room with mic placement far away from the instruments. It's a nice approach that lets the instruments breathe. This is a great recording, definitely worth having.

Inside U.S.A. was recorded before the show was fully cast in order to beat the 1948 ASCAP strike, which explains why non-cast members performed some of these songs. Great material on both scores.......2005-09-16

"Inside U.S.A." was a huge hit revue with the unique Bea Lillie, Jack Haley of "The Wizard of Oz" and such future names as Carl Reiner (not on the recordings). "Atlanta" was apparently cut as it doesn't appear in any programs of the show, and it is revue material with topical references so younger Broadway fans may wonder what the hell Bea is singing about (Atlanta was known for it's federal prison, imagine her in a neat striped suit and matching pillbox hat with a ball and chain to twirl), but her spirit was perhaps as well captured on these tracks as it ever was in a studio recording. "The Bandwagon" is also wonderful, Fred Astaire at his stage height just before he went Hollywood (with his sister Adele, a bigger star then), and a pioneer recording that was LP length before that existed. All the material by Dietz and Schwartz in it is classic and showed up in the very different film 25 years later. But these recordings may be better, and the sound is brilliant for the time. So, a bargain and let's hope the trove of theater recordings continues to be mined - how about all the Decca recordings of Bea, including the unreleased 60s recordings as well as the two lps from her legendary "Evening with Beatrice Lillie"? (See the Joyce Grenfell "Requests" recent CD for a handfull of the Decca material, beautifully remastered as bonus cuts).

This is DEFINITELY worth a listen!.......2007-01-16

I am a sax player as well as a music teacher and have found this CD to be well worth the money! Not only do you get a wide variety of styles, but you also get to hear one of the rare saxophone orchestras who use uncommon instruments. You can tell that these players have a lot of fun together, which makes it all the more enjoyable to listen to as well as teach with. There are slight intonation problems on the occasion, but when you think about all of the things they are doing - I think I'll let that one slide! Don't miss out on this unique and enjoyable group! My personal favorite track is Casbah Shuffle. I hope you enjoy!

What a major disappointment. Has this group ever heard of intonation, vibrato, or articulation? There are several spots on this CD where the "ensemble" is just not even close to being together. I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about. Don't buy this CD "just to hear the contrabass sax." I have heard better sounds from my lawn mower running over tree branches. The Nuclear Whales should pull this recording off the market to avoid any more embarrassment. I will not buy any more of their recordings, and urge you to do the same. Save your money for gas.

If you only have one saxophone ensemble CD, it should be from the Whales. And if you don't like saxophone, buy this anyways--you will still like it. Good music is music that sounds good, right?

This CD starts, appropriately enough, with a fanfare (Fanfare for the Common Man), which makes great use of the soprano lead. The lower voices are gradually layered in, but they don't bring out all the horns until the second track, which rotates the leads among all the players, including Don Stevens on the Contrabass.

To put it mildly, the Contrabass sax is more than a bit unusual, and there are only a few in existence. Stevens' horn was fortuitously discovered in a New Jersey warehouse just before demolition. The difference between a more standard quartet and this orchestra is the addition of 50% more players and additional voices. The Whales always supplemented the standard 4 saxes (soprano, alto, tenor, and bari) with sopranino and bass. Adding the contrabsss makes this pure magic. Nobody can listen to a contrabass sax without cracking a smile.

I'm a sucker for Ellington, so when it is played by a talented group of musicians like this--especially a sax ensemble--its irresistable to me. The Ellington medley is exquisite, with a tearful interpretation of "Come Sunday" immediately followed by a novel rendition of "Caravan."

The contrabass totally rocks on "Casbah Shuffle". That thing just kind of thwops-it is almost percussive, which makes a great effect in conjunction with the tabla (the Indian drum that goes `dweep, dweep, dweep') and tam tam. With a soprano lead, it has a real Don Ellis "Electric Bath" kind of feel. This is fun stuff-I can't imagine anyone not liking this.

No group located in a tree-hugging locale like Santa Cruz, CA would name themselves Nuclear Whales if they didn't have a sense of humor, but a novelty number like "Shuffle" is immediately followed by a completely serious number, "New York City Ghost," which is so haunting it gives me goose bumps. Interestingly, they don't identify the soloists, and I'm not sure which of the 3 soprano-players does the lead in this one. For the most part, they arrange their own stuff, but this one is arranged by Lennie Niehaus.

Back to another upbeat number; "Sweet Georgia Brown" must have been written with the saxophone in mind. This is the thwoppiest chart for the contrabass. It's followed by an original vocal piece by baritonist Ann Merrell called "Mold, Mold" that would be perfect for some of the Louis Jordan-inspired swing bands that were popular a couple years back.

The rest of the album is more of the same, alternating grit, swing & jazz with Richard Strauss and Louis Gottschalk. This group can play anything, and it sounds great.

Folks, this is simply ensemble sax at it's finest! It don't get much better!

Being a lover of Bass Sax, the Contrabass only added more musical jucies to my ears and pulled untold watts from my system!

UNBELIEVABLE arrangements! GENIUS! More genius are the artists! You have no idea what takes as a musician to get to this plateau, and beyond that, get THIS many together as a group and WHALE away!

The NW are the Canadian Brass, only with reeds! And MORE! A MUST if you are an audiophile! If you are a reed player, you already own it. If not, GET IT!

From Dixieland to Classical and everything inbetween, they have it all. The campiness of various tunes exude artististic virtuosity and push the creative envelope!

You MUST hear this on a high end system as I have. Bozak 310-B Concert Masters do very fine with this range of frequences. (28 cycles required--minimum, to hear it all!).

CRANK IT! You will feel things you never felt before! The arrangements are spectacular!!!

A VERY good HIGH quality recording. No limiters or balonery! Just a PURE sound without distortion.

I can't say enough. Simply the best stuff I have heard in YEARS!
