Album Description

"Coffee, Chocolate & Men", the latest album by Platinum Plus Universal recording artist Jen Rathbun features 11 new original compositions. It's no wonder that Jen Rathbun has been nominated the Female Vocalist of the Year in the State of Texas for the Texas Music Awards. The houston jazz star has the greatest jazz album ever and Billboard's review "brilliantly produced tawdry jazz album" is exactly right. This album is worth whatever you have to pay for it. It's absolutely sensational.

Hot and Rich.......2004-12-18

I've been following Jen Rathbun for a couple years now. In her new CD, "Coffee, Chocolate & Men", she brings her music to a whole new level. Her first CD, "Beautiful Day", was a sampler of her wide ranging writing styles. Chocolate is focused, delivering a rich dose of her smoky-room cabaret style. These are fun songs, hangin-with-the-girls songs, songs that make you raise your eyebrows and grin knowingly. From the dusky ballads, "Seven Digits Away", and "I'm So Lonely", to the bawdy "Yard Man" (makes me blush), to the right-on "Monday Blues"...she reveals too-true moments, and gives us singable melodies with unforgettable lyrics. My favorite cut is "Cool Cat", full of crooning innocence and inuendo. Her voice is warm and dense, thick as buttered rum, and the backing jazzy instrumentals are crisp and bright. This lively CD would be perfect music for a 30th birthday bash, a bachelorette party, or a let-your-hair-down dinner with friends after a long week. Honey, it's a hottie!

BYE-BYE H-BOMB!.......2007-01-05

Good Memories of dancing and listening to this legend of the blues and 'funk' in the 50s~60s in Cincinnati & Hamilton Ohio ....For the most part, I think he had been forgotten; until the recent announcement of his "passing" and memorial service held in the suburb of Cincinnati (College Hill) It's sad that he didn't get the recognition he deserved.

This CD is more mainstream than the cover photo of a goofy-looking old man in the purple wig might suggest. Robert P ("H-Bomb") Ferguson goes WAYYY back to at least 1950, when he was discovered by former Duke Ellington Orchestra member Cat Anderson and became known as a classic "blues shouter" despite his diminutive size as well as "The Cobra Man" for his "snake-like shimmy at the microphone" according to the liner notes. He bounced around in several bands back then, including one for the legendary jazz label Prestige Records and shared the stage in the '50s with the likes of B B King, Big Joe Turner and Wynonie Harris. By the late '50s his career started to wane and he temporarily retired in the early '70s, but re-emerged later with the outlandish wigs he is now known for. This album reflects his jazzy blues history, the band consists of Eric Neuhasser on the saxophone as well as Ferguson himself on the piano along with his scratchy voice, but this is blues all the way. There are some toe-tappers here such as "Midnight Ramblin' Tonight" (the leadoff track), "Love Her, Don't Shove Her" and "He Say She Say" actually sung by Keenath Malachi Williams. It's a tight CD that I first heard, in all places, in a record store in a French-speaking section of Montreal. If you like jazz-blues fusion, this is worth considering.

H is something to behold. It is truly a travesty that more people don't know the wonder, humor, spectacle, musicianship, and personality that define one of the last true jump blues men. Do yourself a huge favor, buy this album in triplicate. If you ever get the chance to see this man live, don't miss it for the gods will have surely smiled upon you that day. I'll close with a word from the Bomb, "old jenny-sue, that girl is so fine, you can have my money, but give me my peace of mind."

If you have never had the chance to see H-Bomb live (especially some of the wilder, old shows at Cory's in Cincinnati), then you owe it to yourself to grab this disc which demonstrates some of the finest examples of the jump blues style.

H-Bomb Takes No Prisoners.......1999-06-05

This is one of the best Blues CDs of the 1990's. H-Bomb is a truly unique songwriter/vocalist who is known for his extensive collection of outlandish wigs and his off-the-wall comments about the sex life of his grandmother between songs. His songs are bawdy, humorous, and very catchy. The band on this disc is very tight and the production is quite good.
