5 out of 5 stars Groovin' on the West Coast.......2006-10-26

Of the scores and scores of recording dates Gene Ammons had notched on his belt, I believe only three of them were done on the West Coast; this was the first (the other two were made for Prestige in 1972-73). Half of this CD was made before a live audience at the Black Orchid in LA, the other half in a studio on the same day (August 15, 1961). It's actually a case of Gene guesting with the Black Orchid house band, which was Groove Holmes on organ, Gene Edwards on guitar, and Leroy Henderson on drums. The results are typical for Ammons: a bunch of blues, a slow ballad, a couple of real burners. The CD begins and ends with the blues taken up tempo: Holmes's GOOD VIBRATIONS is fiery while Gene's HEY YOU, WHAT'S THAT has an unusual staccato theme before smoothing out nicely. WILLOW WEEP FOR ME is the slow ballad - Gene is lush and sexy while Holmes produces a solo on organ that sounds almost like a marimba. The title track is a very catchy theme and swings mightily. Edwards is a fine guitarist out of the Wes Montgomery school and Henderson is a solid drummer. The album is a real gas and everyone performs well.

4 out of 5 stars Jug and Groove are IN the latter..........2003-09-18

More than half of this CD is Live; the other 2 tracks being done the same day in the studio. The studio sound is better, no question, but Live is Live...and I like drummer Leroy Henderson a lot on the Live part. Much like Anders, who reviewed this below, I find the guitar to be a problem on both Live - where his 'gain' is up too much, and hence distorts his sound; and in the studio - where he is obviously out of tune. Playing ' Wes-style octave' leads when your guitar is out of tune (listen to "Morris The Minor") is bad enough; to allow that on to a recording is not good...Otherwise, Jug sounds great with Groove, especially in a Live setting. This is a straight-on groove CD.

5 out of 5 stars Two soulmates groovin...........2002-06-07

It is two musicians with almost identical rhytm conception that plays together here..no wonder that is swings . It is not often that you hear a sax player of Gene Ammons calibre playing with an organ trio.I would describe the music as GROOVE & SWING not bebop and blues which is more common for organ quartets.
Groove Holmes does not use any overpowered leslie speaker here,,it is quite refreshing to hear.
From what I heard .. Groove mostly played his basslines with his left hand, and those lines are strong..The Blues "Hittin the Jug" is taken at breath taking speed and Grooves basslines pushed Ammons to some remarkable playing. The guitarplayer is Gene Edwards that occurs on many of Holmes recordings.. he plays very nice,,his comping is at the mark,, BUT his tone is ...well quite ugly..which is the only negative I can say about this recording.
In Germany this would be called GROOVENDER SWING

4 out of 5 stars If you like West Coast, this is a fine choice........2006-08-20

Shelly Manne had a distinguished career as a drummer and here he works with a kind of Who's Who in West Coast Jazz -- Bob Cooper, Jimmy Giuffre, Marty Paich, Art Pepper and Bud Shank, among others.

The sound we mostly associate with West Coast jazz comes less from the solos than from the smooth arrangements. They sound more like miniature versions of Woody Herman and Stan Kenton than like home-grown small ensembles designed around a few instruments. And they tended to use oddball instruments -- French horns and whatnot. You ought to hear Bob Cooper on another album struggling with a jazz interpretation of "I Can't Get Started" -- on an oboe!

Most of the soloists are competent and professional musicians without being particularly innovative. Gerry Mulligan (not heard here) was an exception. So was Jimmy Giuffre who went on a few years after this recording to come out with a very personal breakthrough album that included a couple of tunes by Jerome Kern in which Giuffre shook of the cliches and did some extraordinary things. And after that went on to play experimental jazz in empty night clubs because evidently no one but musical theorists could understand them.

But here everyone is pretty much at his peak. It was 1953 and 1955 after all, the heyday of West Coast Jazz and its popularity. Aficionados had Howard Rumsey and his Lighthouse All-Stars in their minds constantly.

The musicians all seemed to know one another and to have worked together at various times in different venues. This is a good example of their having fun while producing some memorable work.

5 out of 5 stars West Coast Ain't So Bad Now Is It!!!!!!!.......2003-06-24

Black be bop musicians thought that whites could not pull it off. Whites also got criticised like, they weren't true jazz people, didn't have the soul and backrounds to be jazz musicians. Blacks were right, in a way. Even though just the visual difference was the color of skin, blacks had the soulful backround. Miles Davis once said, I can tell if its not black people, It just wont go through me. Blacks said go find your own music. Well, whites came to play west coast, and still got criticised. They claimed it was bland, and wasn't real. West coasts got more money, so maybee it was envy, but blacks are said to be true jazz musicians. To me, this isn't so. Blacks told WHITES to find their own way of preaching jazz, and they did and still got badly criticised. This Shelly Manne album is proof that west coast isn't bland. It swings just as violently as any other. Critic, Nat Hentoff once said west coast was bland, but to me it isn't so. Whites should have an outlet of expression. I still love Miles and Trane though.

5 out of 5 stars Texas tenor at his very best.......2001-09-24

Buddy Tate (1913-2001) ranks among the great masters of classic tenor sax.He played in Count Basie's orchestra after Lester left the band, and belongs to the family of the great players of the swing era, with Don Byas,Arnett Cobb,Illinois Jacquet,Ben Webster and Chu Berry.THis CD combines two different sessions originally issued on Swingville : "Tate's date" (tracks 1-6) and "Groovin' with Buddy Tate" (tracks 7-13).For the first session,Buddy plays with the rare Ben Richardson (alto, baritone and clarinet),Sadik Hakim (piano),Wendell Marshall (bass) and Osie Johnson,a very talented drummer. The second session shows us Buddy on tenor sax,of course, but also on clarinet (a magnificent version of Duke's "I'm just a lucky so and so"),with pianist Ronnell Bright, guitarist Wally Richardson, bassist George Tucker and Roy Brooks on drums. The spirit of Kansas City's music is everywhere in this record: blues and jumping tunes in which Buddy's saxophone shines from the beginning to the end.In the second session, the blues alternates with three beautiful standards: Duke's "lucky" (beautiful chorus by Wally Richardson),"East of the sun" and "makin' whoopee".The recording engineer was Rudy Van Gelder, so the sound quality is irreprochable. An essential reissue, and a milestone in Buddy Tate's very long musical carreer.

5 out of 5 stars Shelly Swings with the Best of the West.......2000-12-28

No one could swing a pair of brushes like Shelly Manne. No disrespect to Buddy, Gene, Jo, Mel or the other giants of the engine room, but Shelly Manne was just so smooth. This disc, a reissue of Contemporary 3507, is a gem of west coast jazz and features arrangements by several of the people who defined the style in the 1950's (Marty Paich, Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers etc.). Originally recorded in 1955, Manne has surrounded himself with several west coast studio fraternity members including Bob Cooper, Curtis Counce, Bob Enevoldsen, Russ Freeman, Jimmy Giuffre, Bill Holman, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Marty Paich and others. 12 tracks in all and every one features nice tight clever orchestrations over swing tempos or ballad treatments. I only really disliked one track (Fugue) which was a little too experimental for me. Highly recommended, especially for lovers of California Cool.

3 out of 5 stars Send help, Curtis is lost in the building!.......2007-02-06

Besides his performances as a renown sideman, Benny Golson has shown here he has every right to act as a virtuosic frontman too. The record is bluesy, straightforward and definitely groovin', just like so many other fine examples of hard bop from the late 50ies. Dissapointing though is the fact that Curtis Fuller's trombone sounds like he's playing from the neighbouring building. This does little good to the overall sound of the album, except if you're into Karaoke of course..

5 out of 5 stars Groovin'.......2005-09-07

This is the second of a string of three Prestige albums Golson recorded in 1959. All three are top notch. On this one Golson is joined by Curtis Fuller (tb) Ray Bryant (p) Paul Chambers (b) and Art Blakey (d). This is hard bop at its finest. Two standards and three originals make up the tunes; all three originals are blues (THE STROLLER is up tempo and really cooks). Ray Bryant, an excellent blues interpretor on piano, is wonderful on these sides. Everyone came to play on this date, and the results are very solid.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweetest.......2003-09-21

Clocking in at only 34 minutes, you might think this slight blowing session is not worth the money. But like 'Blues-ette' (under trombonist Curtis Fuller's name) and like his hard-to-find classic, 'Free,' this is a Golson gem. I play tenor, and I am continually blown away by 50's vintage Benny Golson - before he confined himself to tight arrangements that squeezed out his tenor sax improvising, and long before his return to the tenor in the post-bop era, when he drastically and unfortunately changed his tone to a mere shell of its early beauty. In this '59 session, made while he was forming the Jazztet with Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller, he stretches out on some simple blues patterns and one standard ballad. It's all done at a swinging tempo that allows Fuller to shine on trombone with near perfect solos; the under-rated Ray Bryant adds his impeccable piano touch (he's as great as Wynton Kelly or Sonny Clark); Paul Chambers was never better on bass than here, both as accompanist and soloist; and the irrepressible drummer, Art Blakey, makes the whole session sparkle. Backed by this band, Golson is as smooth as butter in tone, and as dazzling in his virtuosity as any tenor player of the times. In my opinion, he was the greatest tenor virtuoso of the 50's - even better than Sonny Rollins or Johnny Griffin: and that's sayin' something! Although this is simply a blowing session on some fairly simple riffs, it is raised to the level of the sublime by consummate musicianship and group chemistry, proving that the most perfect diamonds are the small ones. Add this to your collection of jazz classics. And don't be put off by tepid reviews on other websites that only give this three stars. Sometimes professional critics have a bad day.

5 out of 5 stars YES - now that is more like the Golson I remember.......2003-09-09

I don't know if it is the addition of one of my top five piano players, Ray Bryant, or my top five favorite rhythm sections, Art Blakey and Paul Chambers, but Benny Golson is indeed groovin' this time. It is obvious from the first song. He is right there for the first solo. No flights of off-groove fancy, just great straight ahead, in the pocket playing, the way I am always used to hearing him. "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" finds him playing and saying everything melodically and coherently, even though he is still in Trane-ing. I'm partial to Benny before his Trane influence became so great, but here, it is used to properly propel his playing to new heights, unlike, in my opinion, "Blues-ette", where he simply lost his own voice in favor of his newer mentor. Perhaps having the date in his own name made a difference, I'm not sure, but he's swingin' hard and fast, like on "The Stroller" (written by Golson), and Curtis Fuller is flawless, punctuating a lot like Al Grey...and Ray...what IS there to say?! The man does it all. Chambers states his usual wise musical sermon, then Blakey takes it over the top. "Yesterdays" is truly soulful, and both Golson and Fuller (with Ray, of course) give it what it needs. THIS is my kind of star, straight ahead bop-blowing session. It blows "Blue-ette" away.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Session.......2002-03-11

I listen to a bunch of tenor players, my favorites, after Lester are Trane and Johnny Griffin. But I also like Gene Ammons, Jimmy Forrest, Wardel Gray, Joe Henderson and Hank Mobley.
I hate to admit it, but this record is my first by Benny Golson, and it really knocks me out. He's someone I've heard about but have not really sat down and listened to. What an ear-opener this has turned out to be!
Groovin' is why so many of the Golson & Fuller records from the late 50s and early 60s are still available.
The rhythm section is really great too. There's nothing negative anyone can say about this collection.

Album Description

Using organic and sometimes retro instrumentation, loops and light electronica to present her well-crafted, thoughtful songs, Jamie forges her own brand of contemporary pop that is funky, folky, moody, meaningful and soulful. About half of the album was written in New York City, where Jamie lived for five months following the World Trade Center Tragedy. "Soul Connected" tells the story of an unlikely pair who meet in the subway and fall in love, only to be separated for reasons beyond their control. "Taximan" starts off where Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" left off, musing on the American Dream from an immigrant's perspective in post-9/11 NYC: Where are you from? they ask/and he always dreads the question/He came to NYC to git with Lady Liberty/and the flag he displays prominently/shields him from the vigilantes/they don't know that he sings with Tracy/and he has a dream like you and me.

Two beautiful and haunting odes to unconditional love between close friends appear on the album, as does the stirring social protest song, "Mantra," and the rockin' title track, "Truce." Much of the rest of the record explores the various stages and forms of romantic love: "Don't Even Waste My Time" (a modern girl's love song), "Birdz & Beez" (a trip-hoppy lust-song); and "Daddy's Grace" (a shockingly honest testimonial), to name just a few.

Two songs on this CD have received honors from the John Lennon Songwriting Contest—"Don't Even" in the Rock category in 2001 and "Mantra" in the Folk category in 2002.

      Album Description

Jazzman Records started their 7 inch reissue series a few years back with one thing in mind, to make the rarest, most obscure & grooviest records available to all on beautiful 7 inch vinyl. Many of the recordings chosen were little known by music lovers but were so good that they deserved to be heard by the many people with an ear for the good stuff living around the world. This idea still stands to this day, & they continue to seek out great music that has long since been forgotten or has proved very difficult to find in the original format. Now their Jazzman 7 inch releases themselves have proven hard to locate by some, & have proved useless to those who do not own a turntable, so now the time has come to make some of the best cuts available on CD for the first time. This CD chronicles the first 10 releases, & includes the elusive first Jazzman 7 inch, now long out of print, 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child' by Kathleen Emery. As the first release on the label, they had to make sure it was a good one - it can't have been a bad choice as demand for the record continues to this day.
