As good as tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano's recent quartet albums featuring piano master Hank Jones were, they didn't prepare us for the sublimity of this two-man encounter. Duets Live has it all: brilliant and spirited individual playing, exceptional rapport, a terrific mix of songs and a luminous awareness of jazz in all its varied forms. What makes Lovano and Jones so compatible, even though they are separated by more than three decades, is the ease with which they each straddle and move back and forth across the line beween modern and pre-modern (in this, Lovano recalls Coleman Hawkins, one of the giants Jones backed). Much of the material is steeped in classic bop, but Jones points the way back to an earlier golden era with his lambent sparkle and Lovano comes at songs like "Charlie Chan" (his salute to Charlie Parker), Thelonious Monk's "Four in One," and Tadd Damerson's "Soultrane" from consistently fresh angles even as he applies his classic husky sound. Still a force at 88, Jones elegantly frees three of his late brother Thad's tunes from their big band trappings and in the solo spotlight pulls out stops on the standard, "Oh! Look at me Now!" It's a performance of gusty expression and poetic delicacy, slyness and warmth, and endless smiles. Is it too much to ask for a volume two? --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:

A MAGNIFICENT DUO: HANK & JOE IN A TIMELESS, BEAUTIFUL JAZZ PERFORMANCE.......2007-05-13
The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, are wall to wall equally-captivating performances which proceed without letdown from song to song. But I especially like the fire by both players on "Lady Luck", written by Hank's brother, Thad, and "Kids Are Pretty People". I also love Joe's nod to older tenor players with his 'Ben Webster-ish' tenor sax effects on "Lullaby" and his nod to Yardbird Parker on "Charlie Chan", so reminiscent of Miles' "Half Nelson". Hank gets two solo bites of this CD apple with a wonderful, shimmering "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin' " and "Oh! Look At Me Now", which is fitting since "Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola" is known for great solo piano performances. Joe gets off what is probably his best solo, alone and later with Hank, on a swirling performance of Monks' "Four In One", blowing hot, liquid strings of notes. Pure, timeless, magnificent jazz music! Encore, gentlemen! My Highest Recommendation. Five ENJOYABLE Stars!!

An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17
Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.
You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!
One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12
The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.
ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!
should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19
The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.
He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!
You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.
A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.
This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.
What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.
Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.
BEST LIVE RECORD EVER.......2006-08-18

"Live at 'The Club'" boasts the cover of this 1966 album. Of course, this turned out to be a lie, as did the entirety of the original liner notes. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy was not recorded at that Chicago venue, but instead at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. (The ruse was a favor to the club owner.) The hollering audience was comprised of invited guests and stimulated by free booze. Still, their enthusiasm is definitely well warranted, as alto man Cannonball Adderley and his band offer a riveting blend of postbop calisthenics and soul-jazz grooves. Joe Zawinul's famous title track, with its hypnotic, gospel-drenched funkiness, was a crossover top 10 pop hit, as well as an astonishing exercise in restraint for Zawinul, who somehow resists the urge to dig in on his electric piano, instead opting for a deep, mellow mood. The rest of the album cooks, with Cannonball, brother Nat on cornet, and Zawinul supplying the heat. --Marc GreilsamerAlbum Description

Serious fun.......2005-06-30
Although the first two tracks are titled "Fun" and "Games," there's a slightly dark edge to some of the soloing here, a bit of that mystery that makes the music of Miles Davis so compelling and captivating. Perhaps that's what makes this music so exciting. It's frequently on the edge of chaos, but never quite tips over into "free" jazz.
Zawinul really takes the spotlight on the title track, with a great spoken intro by Cannonball. This track is pure soul-drenched simplicity. Genius. Let this album be the light that guides you into jazz.

Diverse and sometimes powerful acoustic live CD.......2006-04-03
As an avid Pearl Jam fan who's listened to nearly everything they've ever published in the recorded music realm, I again couldn't wait to get my hands on this Live acoustical album...sometimes simply known in musical circles as "unplugged".
The album features a few of their classics like "Of the Girl" and "Daughter" as well as many covers, like Dylan's "Masters of War". With an unplugged CD like this, you get to hear the band in almost more of a true folk/spiritual sounding set as opposed to an arena rocker. The venue, Benaroya Hall, from what I can "hear" of this album, is a superb place to record a live performance (especially an acoustic one, Vedder's voice almost echoes, but doesn't, it's just enough to give it more of a far reaching "boom" as opposed to falling flat through the crowd which can sometimes happen at a recording such as this. Thankfully, this is not the case; it's the one of the best sounding LIVE albums I've ever heard!
Because I love the sounds, and could tell that whatever this place was is obviously the place to be when recording an "unplugged" album, I did some research on it. I'll give you the basics in a short but informative way.
1) Benaroya Hall opened up in 1998 as Seattle's state-of-the-art performance hall. It is home to the Seattle Symphony.
2) The State of the art facility is designed with the music in mind of course. As I mentioned before, Vedder's voice really comes through clear and strong. The hall is made with a multitude of angles as well as panels and nooks that disperse and diffuse the pitch of sound as it travels as a wavelength. The physics of this of course, gives us much more quality music...it's enhanced a million times better than if say, they were playing on a stage in the middle of a basketball gymnasium.
Now that you are familiar with how great the SOUND is and the SCIENCE behind it, it's time to move on to my opinion of this album.
First off, the set list. When I first listened to it I was enthralled at hearing some of my favorite songs. For an acoustical album it still felt like powerful music, and Vedder and the crew really do sound like, as usual, they are putting their heart and soul into playing their instruments and delivering the message or theme the song portrays. As I went later on into the album, I started to feel a little lost. Several songs I had never heard of seemed to suck some of the energetic feel that I had from their classics right outta the air!
Was it the song, the way they played the song or their attitude in general? I think the latter does not apply, but the former mentioned rings true. Some of these songs may seem like something the band should play (like "Masters of War" and "I believe in miracles") however, to often I felt like the band wasn't in Benaroya hall anymore, they were on a regular stage singing cover songs. The band to me simply does not seem to evoke the same energy or spirit that they do with their own music. Now, in saying that, maybe because their music is just that, something that came from their heart, mind, and soul, and not someone else's, that is why I feel somewhat disenfranchised from the non-PJ songs on this album.
In continuing to be objective, I would have liked to see a couple more of their own songs, whether they were hits or lesser known tunes, on each disk. I think to me it would have made it a little more Pearl Jam. However, as a fan, I ultimately still enjoy this album, and am impressed at the quality of sound that The Hall they play in presents.
There are still parts of this CD that are simply amazing, like the way your heart will feel heavier when hearing the song "Low Life" and "Of the girl". These are tracks I never get tired of hearing so I may be biased there, but taking the electronics and electric guitars out of the picture never seems to strip down the bands talent but unveil a stronger, richer sound all it's own!
The interaction with the crowd of course is more subtle than playing say, at some place like Miami or Houston in front of 50,000 people. The feeling from the crowd is appreciative, but also a special kind considering that they are doing the album (from what I can gather from Vedders intermittent speeches) for a youth benefit charity. Pearl Jam will never be called sellouts or greedy rock stars, as they are often known participate in things to help their community, the world, and fellow man.
"Sleight of Hand" is also a gem on here and comes deep from Eddie's now usual soothing, almost reaching out sorrow and serious toned vocals. It uses the usual theme of one person vs. themselves and others, invoking sad tones of regret and memory. There seems to be some electronic things going on here and there, so I am assuming unplugged means that the lead guitarists are playing acoustics, or perhaps someone is using a pedal machine via acoustic banks. Regardless, overall it's the sound quality of the hall that makes up for some of the songs I don't put up on a pedestal. There are other PJ sources of live music; however, I don't think you can really go wrong with this album. With 24 tracks performed at a great venue by one of the greatest American Rock bands of all time, how could you go wrong?
Now that's a ass whooping..........2006-01-28
A parade of great instrumental and electric songs - I wished I had been there at the concert because it must have been a night to remember.

Take one oversize talent with an ego the size of the chip on his shoulder. Put him in front of a frenzied German audience, and set him loose. What do you have? One of the greatest live albums in rock & roll history. Recorded in 1964 at the same club where the Beatles cut their teeth, Live at the Star Club, Hamburg captures the Killer when he was on the outs as a recording artist. (It took him years to recover from the scandal that ensued when he wed his 13-year-old cousin, Myra Gale Brown.) Lewis didn't require acceptance, however; he just needed an audience, a piano, and a rhythm section willing to hang on to "old Jerry Lee" for dear life. The repertoire is rife with staples of the day--"Money," "Mean Woman Blues," "Long Tall Sally," "Hound Dog"--but the Killer has no trouble customizing them with his pumping piano and insinuating vocals. "When Jerry does something, I do it mighty good," he boasts in "What'd I Say." No argument here. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

Better to see him live than to listen to this live disc............2006-07-25
1-First of all its only 52 min. long. A cd has about approximately 79 minutes of available space, and with Junior's songs being relatively short, there could have been 25 minutes more music on here.
2-The set list isn't the best.....there are MANY definitive Junior tracks which don't show up here at all.
3-Aside from the last track (Rock and Roll Guitar Medley) the performance here is rather lifeless, the singing sounds tired and strictly by the numbers....no flash, electricity or energy Junior usually provides in his LIVE shows...on this, he tends to simply 'phone it in'.
I really love Junior Brown and his music/guitar abilities, but this disc doesn't not reflect his ability as a performer, just that of a guitar picker.
