As good as tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano's recent quartet albums featuring piano master Hank Jones were, they didn't prepare us for the sublimity of this two-man encounter. Duets Live has it all: brilliant and spirited individual playing, exceptional rapport, a terrific mix of songs and a luminous awareness of jazz in all its varied forms. What makes Lovano and Jones so compatible, even though they are separated by more than three decades, is the ease with which they each straddle and move back and forth across the line beween modern and pre-modern (in this, Lovano recalls Coleman Hawkins, one of the giants Jones backed). Much of the material is steeped in classic bop, but Jones points the way back to an earlier golden era with his lambent sparkle and Lovano comes at songs like "Charlie Chan" (his salute to Charlie Parker), Thelonious Monk's "Four in One," and Tadd Damerson's "Soultrane" from consistently fresh angles even as he applies his classic husky sound. Still a force at 88, Jones elegantly frees three of his late brother Thad's tunes from their big band trappings and in the solo spotlight pulls out stops on the standard, "Oh! Look at me Now!" It's a performance of gusty expression and poetic delicacy, slyness and warmth, and endless smiles. Is it too much to ask for a volume two? --Lloyd Sachs

mr jones playing is great as always.mr lovanos playing is the most distinctive of all the current sax players. the playing on this album is very good, the monk tune "four in one" is my favorate. the only thing i not not like is that the piano could have been recored with a little more volume.

5 out of 5 stars A MAGNIFICENT DUO: HANK & JOE IN A TIMELESS, BEAUTIFUL JAZZ PERFORMANCE.......2007-05-13

Five MAGNIFICENT Stars!! The legendary jazz keyboard master Hank Jones and legendary tenor saxophone titan, Joe Lovano, have conjured up one of the best jazz duet performances in years!! And they are caught live at the intimate Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in the Frederick P. Rose Hall, which is the Jazz At Lincoln Center performance complex in NYC. These are timeless, beautiful, flawless performances by two jazz masters who have almost restlessly searched the jazz spectrum for fulfillment in many formats over the years. They definitely have found something very special here that just may require an encore and it happened in a great venue. Stepping away from Mr Lovano's quartet, these two incomparable musicians have all of the propulsion and rhythm that is needed to propel these excellent performances along nicely. Unencumbered by bass and drum, they bend and stretch the time at will, with Hank providing solos and colorations as well as wicked time-keeping 'stride piano' with Joe declaratively soaring above and in between, making for some wonderful mellow jazz music. '80ish' Mr Jones plays with equal fire as '50ish' Mr Lovano making this duo an empathetic match made in jazz heaven.

The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, are wall to wall equally-captivating performances which proceed without letdown from song to song. But I especially like the fire by both players on "Lady Luck", written by Hank's brother, Thad, and "Kids Are Pretty People". I also love Joe's nod to older tenor players with his 'Ben Webster-ish' tenor sax effects on "Lullaby" and his nod to Yardbird Parker on "Charlie Chan", so reminiscent of Miles' "Half Nelson". Hank gets two solo bites of this CD apple with a wonderful, shimmering "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin' " and "Oh! Look At Me Now", which is fitting since "Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola" is known for great solo piano performances. Joe gets off what is probably his best solo, alone and later with Hank, on a swirling performance of Monks' "Four In One", blowing hot, liquid strings of notes. Pure, timeless, magnificent jazz music! Encore, gentlemen! My Highest Recommendation. Five ENJOYABLE Stars!!

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17

This album is a priceless gem that you will treasure forever! Sam Cooke metaphorically rolls up his sleeves and really works up a sweat in this amazing live concert at the Harlem Square Club, giving an earthy, gritty performance that is spellbinding. Sam's delivery crackles with raw energy! He belts out the songs with an emotional intensity and sense of urgency that whips his audience into euphoric frenzy.

Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.

You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12

Sam Cooke delivers an unbelievable performance in this one. When I first got it, it was difficult for me to appreciate this live album. But as time passed by, the more it grew on me. And now, it's truly one of my favorite albums. Any soul music fan has to have this one.

The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21

This is soul at its very best! No matter how many times I listen to this album, I NEVER get tired of it. Sam Cooke went on to inspire thousands of musicians and, after hearing this album, you'll know why. Since the new movie "Ali," starring Will Smith, has been released on DVD and VHS, a lot of people wonder about the beginning where the actor portraying Sam Cooke is performing. Well, this recording is exactly where they got the idea for the beginning of the film.
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!

5 out of 5 stars should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19

This is the live album to outdo all other live albums. I am a head banging, rock and roller, guitar nut and this is still the best live album ever!

The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.

He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!

You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.

A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.

This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.

What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.

Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.

5 out of 5 stars BEST LIVE RECORD EVER.......2006-08-18

I agree with Mr. Sullivan about who cares about some specific sounds at a live performance,... its raw, sweety, aggressive, compasionate, ITS ROCK AND ROLL!! ....today's new soul artist should buy this CD, take notes, and learn from it,.. (r&b singers are too cheezy now...) Listening to this CD, you are going back when the male soul singers were real men,.. no fakes like today's singers who just want to show off high vocal ranges like a bad imitator of Eddy Valen on the guitar. This Live show does not have any pyrotechnics,...and thats why I love it,.. Sam Cooke is by far my favorite soul singer... (I dont have nothing else to say,... so BUY IT NOW!)

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-31

It's taken me literally two decades to get Jeff Beck. In my twenties, I tried Blow by Blow and his stuff with Rod Stewart, and while I could appreciate his prowess, it didn't resonate the same way Rory Gallagher or Jimmy Page or even Blackmore did. I warmed up considerably as I approached 30 and heard his work on "Amused to Death" with Roger Waters (lovely stuff). Now, I can't get enough. I see/hear his influence everywhere (from Page to Satriani). This guy really is everything they say he is. This album, while a bit pricey, is worth every cent. The absolute perfect introduction to Jeff Beck for the novice, but be careful, it might spoil you. This stuff never sounded so good, so crunchingly raw. He's on fire. Awesome, awesome album.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not jeff's best.......2007-02-23

The asking price is insane! I bought this disk from Jeff's website for $15 plus S&H. The disc is great but it's raw & raunchy, sort of harsh... Don't buy at this price; go to Jeff's website and buy the "Official Bootleg USA 2006" much better recording and it sells for just $15 plus S&H...

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-02-16

Jeff Beck has always been one of my favorite guitarists. This disc really proves that he's still got the edge! I highly recommend this disc.

Caution: do not order from Yodelin'Pig. Although this is supposed to be the Japanese import version of this disc, they sent me the domestic version.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.....But Overpriced.......2007-01-15

Holy Crap...I bought this CD on-line, when it first came out, for less than HALF of what it costs now. That said, this is an over-the-top performance by one of the worlds best rock guitarists. I think Beck must have been 'set to 11' during this performance, probably because it's a NYC audience and he knows what they demand for their moneys-worth. His tones are often aggressive, rude, and outrageous, yet he can tame them for that sweet, silky-soft playing on the slower numbers. This is what Beck probably sounds like on those nights when, with insomnia at 2AM and pissed off about it, he decides to take it out on his Strat. Great driving music...try to avoid getting a speeding ticket with this in your CD palyer.

5 out of 5 stars Who can sound like this?.......2007-01-04

"Live at 'The Club'" boasts the cover of this 1966 album. Of course, this turned out to be a lie, as did the entirety of the original liner notes. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy was not recorded at that Chicago venue, but instead at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. (The ruse was a favor to the club owner.) The hollering audience was comprised of invited guests and stimulated by free booze. Still, their enthusiasm is definitely well warranted, as alto man Cannonball Adderley and his band offer a riveting blend of postbop calisthenics and soul-jazz grooves. Joe Zawinul's famous title track, with its hypnotic, gospel-drenched funkiness, was a crossover top 10 pop hit, as well as an astonishing exercise in restraint for Zawinul, who somehow resists the urge to dig in on his electric piano, instead opting for a deep, mellow mood. The rest of the album cooks, with Cannonball, brother Nat on cornet, and Zawinul supplying the heat. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-02-17

I Remember Bird, Leonard Feather's tribute to Charlie Parker, is one of my all time favorite jazz pieces. Cannonball and his brother Nate play it superbly. It's an unforgettable performance.

4 out of 5 stars Good fun.......2006-06-04

Performed in front of a studio crowd plyed with free drinks, Cannonball and company (Nat, Joe Zawinul, Victor Gaskin & Roy McCurdy) play six funky songs. First Cannonball speaks to the crowd, then the band gets in the groove. The groove is a strength and weakness of the album, with the exception of the title track, the songs don't stand out very strongly from each other. The title track has the most interesting songwriting, though the fact that it was a crossover hit surprises me. It's very good, though. The playing is all top-notch, too.

5 out of 5 stars One of my best cds.......2005-12-30

The title track "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," alone, is enough reason to buy this album. This recording captures the electricity of this particular show to the extent that the listener may at points truly get a feeling like they're sitting in the room with the band.

5 out of 5 stars Serious fun.......2005-06-30

This is hard bop at its essence. It's funky, fun, exciting, and most of all it's emotionally-charged. I tend to find myself driving to it a lot.

Although the first two tracks are titled "Fun" and "Games," there's a slightly dark edge to some of the soloing here, a bit of that mystery that makes the music of Miles Davis so compelling and captivating. Perhaps that's what makes this music so exciting. It's frequently on the edge of chaos, but never quite tips over into "free" jazz.

Zawinul really takes the spotlight on the title track, with a great spoken intro by Cannonball. This track is pure soul-drenched simplicity. Genius. Let this album be the light that guides you into jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.......2004-08-23

Let me just tell you, this is about as exciting as it gets! The recording actually feels like it took place at a famous jazz club on a summer night, but as everyone knows by now, this wasn't so, and it was recorded in Capitol studios. This album finds the quintet at the top of its game, this time featuring Cannonball, his brother Nat on cornet, the spectacular Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Of the six exciting numbers, I'd have to say that "Games" is my favorite, another great example of how amazingly underrated Nat was as a composer. The title track has this after-hours mood that you won't be able to find anywhere else. Whenever you're down about something, just put on that track, and I guarantee it will help you deal with whatever your problem is. You can't possibly call yourself a jazz or Cannonball fan and not own this magnificent album, so order it now!

5 out of 5 stars Keep coming back for more.......2007-01-18

I've been listening to Pearl Jam ever since their first album. In the past few years, however, I didn't own any new Pearl Jam record, until I've decided to buy this live performance. What an amazing treat. Not only the new songs are as good as the original, but the live performance ads a whole new feeling to the music and the lyrics. One of the reasons I love Pearl Jam (yes, I used the word Love), is because of their originality and most of all, their stand above the commercial vice. Where too many groups had fallen victim of commercialism, spitting out meaningless records and videos, Peal Jam took a strong stand in the beginning and refused to be audited by the likes of MTV. Their music is powerful, meaningful and most of all, human. So here, more than a decade after "Ten" I am able to listen to a live show and enjoy it more than any group currently on the market, singing while I drive the favorites from past albums as well as some of the newer songs I haven't heard before. I highly recommend this CD to any Peral Jam fan or anyone who is just starting to feel their beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars Pearl Jam is the ultimate Rock band.......2007-01-09

Well, this live album is very good and it shows that Pearl Jam is still the No. 1 rock band in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live PJ album!.......2006-07-26

Simply put...buy this album. There is no better live Pearl Jam album.

4 out of 5 stars Diverse and sometimes powerful acoustic live CD.......2006-04-03

Disclaimer: I give the sound quality and musicianship FIVE stars on this album. The set list and the way some of the non-pj songs seem disconnected from the overall feel of the album is what brings it to an overall of three stars, though still recommended.

As an avid Pearl Jam fan who's listened to nearly everything they've ever published in the recorded music realm, I again couldn't wait to get my hands on this Live acoustical album...sometimes simply known in musical circles as "unplugged".

The album features a few of their classics like "Of the Girl" and "Daughter" as well as many covers, like Dylan's "Masters of War". With an unplugged CD like this, you get to hear the band in almost more of a true folk/spiritual sounding set as opposed to an arena rocker. The venue, Benaroya Hall, from what I can "hear" of this album, is a superb place to record a live performance (especially an acoustic one, Vedder's voice almost echoes, but doesn't, it's just enough to give it more of a far reaching "boom" as opposed to falling flat through the crowd which can sometimes happen at a recording such as this. Thankfully, this is not the case; it's the one of the best sounding LIVE albums I've ever heard!

Because I love the sounds, and could tell that whatever this place was is obviously the place to be when recording an "unplugged" album, I did some research on it. I'll give you the basics in a short but informative way.

1) Benaroya Hall opened up in 1998 as Seattle's state-of-the-art performance hall. It is home to the Seattle Symphony.

2) The State of the art facility is designed with the music in mind of course. As I mentioned before, Vedder's voice really comes through clear and strong. The hall is made with a multitude of angles as well as panels and nooks that disperse and diffuse the pitch of sound as it travels as a wavelength. The physics of this of course, gives us much more quality music...it's enhanced a million times better than if say, they were playing on a stage in the middle of a basketball gymnasium.

Now that you are familiar with how great the SOUND is and the SCIENCE behind it, it's time to move on to my opinion of this album.

First off, the set list. When I first listened to it I was enthralled at hearing some of my favorite songs. For an acoustical album it still felt like powerful music, and Vedder and the crew really do sound like, as usual, they are putting their heart and soul into playing their instruments and delivering the message or theme the song portrays. As I went later on into the album, I started to feel a little lost. Several songs I had never heard of seemed to suck some of the energetic feel that I had from their classics right outta the air!

Was it the song, the way they played the song or their attitude in general? I think the latter does not apply, but the former mentioned rings true. Some of these songs may seem like something the band should play (like "Masters of War" and "I believe in miracles") however, to often I felt like the band wasn't in Benaroya hall anymore, they were on a regular stage singing cover songs. The band to me simply does not seem to evoke the same energy or spirit that they do with their own music. Now, in saying that, maybe because their music is just that, something that came from their heart, mind, and soul, and not someone else's, that is why I feel somewhat disenfranchised from the non-PJ songs on this album.

In continuing to be objective, I would have liked to see a couple more of their own songs, whether they were hits or lesser known tunes, on each disk. I think to me it would have made it a little more Pearl Jam. However, as a fan, I ultimately still enjoy this album, and am impressed at the quality of sound that The Hall they play in presents.

There are still parts of this CD that are simply amazing, like the way your heart will feel heavier when hearing the song "Low Life" and "Of the girl". These are tracks I never get tired of hearing so I may be biased there, but taking the electronics and electric guitars out of the picture never seems to strip down the bands talent but unveil a stronger, richer sound all it's own!

The interaction with the crowd of course is more subtle than playing say, at some place like Miami or Houston in front of 50,000 people. The feeling from the crowd is appreciative, but also a special kind considering that they are doing the album (from what I can gather from Vedders intermittent speeches) for a youth benefit charity. Pearl Jam will never be called sellouts or greedy rock stars, as they are often known participate in things to help their community, the world, and fellow man.

"Sleight of Hand" is also a gem on here and comes deep from Eddie's now usual soothing, almost reaching out sorrow and serious toned vocals. It uses the usual theme of one person vs. themselves and others, invoking sad tones of regret and memory. There seems to be some electronic things going on here and there, so I am assuming unplugged means that the lead guitarists are playing acoustics, or perhaps someone is using a pedal machine via acoustic banks. Regardless, overall it's the sound quality of the hall that makes up for some of the songs I don't put up on a pedestal. There are other PJ sources of live music; however, I don't think you can really go wrong with this album. With 24 tracks performed at a great venue by one of the greatest American Rock bands of all time, how could you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars Now that's a ass whooping..........2006-01-28

Ohh dear this album is simply so great that I find it difficult to understand that I first got my hands on it in 2006. It contains everything good about Pearl Jam, great lyrics, talented music, high energy and powerfull rock ballads. This album is mostly unplugged and the depth of the band really shows on songs like: "Fatal", "Immortality", and "Off He Goes". The semi electric songs are arguably even better. The versions of "Daughter", "Black", "Crazy Mary", "Nothing As It Seems" and "All Or None" are each easily worth the prize of the album by them self.

A parade of great instrumental and electric songs - I wished I had been there at the concert because it must have been a night to remember.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......2006-03-17

The CD is very nice and quite relaxing. However, the cost is outrageous compared to value of the CD. For the amount of money I expected much more from such a talented artist. If you are considering purchasing the CD do not pay more than $15.00 for new.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Live Album of the 90's.......2004-10-21

This the best live album that I have ever purchased and probably my favorite album ever. My complaint is, just like I read from another reviewer, this cd is too short. This is a special performance from a special musician. If you love live music this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars The New Godfather of Soul.......2004-05-06

If you are a D'Angelo fan like myself, this CD is a must-buy. Listening to D'Angelo is something more than just passing time. His songs and lyrics are timeless. Although the CD is somewhat short for its price-tag, it is worth every penny. I've never seen D'Angelo live, so this CD gave me a chance to find out if it's just the studio that makes him sound so good. Well, it's not. His raw talent shines through in every song. His soulful lyrics and soothing voice make the songs come alive. Unlike many "R&B" artists, D'Angelo exudes real emotions. You can feel it.

5 out of 5 stars Brown Sugar got me open and now I want some mo!!.......2003-01-09

I just got this CD as a present and damn if it didn't have me logging on to Amazon.com doing a search for D'Angelo and crossing my fingers hoping that there would be a new release listed for him.
I've seen "D" live more recently for the Voodoo album and he's EXCELLENT. I'm even more in awe by this live session because he was somewhat new to the scene. In my opinion the true talent of an artist is how well he or she performs live, having made that statement he's is truly talented much like Prince is so awesome live, so is Babyface, so is Me'shell NdegeOcello; get the picture. But I digress... buy this CD and I guarantee you it will stay in heavy rotation and you'll be logging onto Amazon.com hoping like I did.

5 out of 5 stars Love-test this CD tonight, it is too sexy for words!.......2002-12-08

This is CD is absolutely worth the import price tag. Do not hesitate, after all, you only live once. D'Angelo is ahead of his time, and talented beyond words. His back-up singers here (and this was recorded back in 1995) are Angie Stone and Karen Bernod, both established artists in their own right today. I can't say enough about this CD, having listened to it non-stop for a week.

Just buy it! It will tide you over until his next release.

I would tell any fan of rock and roll to pick this CD up. There are some great classic songs on it - For Your Love, Shapes of Things, Train Kept A'Rollin...

The band features a smokin' harmonica player and no surprise... an amazing guitarist!

The audio of the live recordings is good and the energy of the band and audience is captured well.

If you are familiar with the Yardbirds music, you will enjoy this CD. However as I said at the beginning, any fan of great rock and roll can dig this one!!

Take one oversize talent with an ego the size of the chip on his shoulder. Put him in front of a frenzied German audience, and set him loose. What do you have? One of the greatest live albums in rock & roll history. Recorded in 1964 at the same club where the Beatles cut their teeth, Live at the Star Club, Hamburg captures the Killer when he was on the outs as a recording artist. (It took him years to recover from the scandal that ensued when he wed his 13-year-old cousin, Myra Gale Brown.) Lewis didn't require acceptance, however; he just needed an audience, a piano, and a rhythm section willing to hang on to "old Jerry Lee" for dear life. The repertoire is rife with staples of the day--"Money," "Mean Woman Blues," "Long Tall Sally," "Hound Dog"--but the Killer has no trouble customizing them with his pumping piano and insinuating vocals. "When Jerry does something, I do it mighty good," he boasts in "What'd I Say." No argument here. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Warning: this album will kill you........2007-07-16

Words really can't describe this record. It's too loud, too energetic, and far too ferocious to be contianed by lame adjectives like "loud," "energetic," or "ferocious." In fact, I think that punctuation would do a much better job of summing up the Live at the Star Club experience: "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Still not satisfied? See, the thing is, this album captures one of the most incredible performances in the entire history of rock n roll- Jerry Lee Lewis doesn't so much play these songs as demolish them, ripping through each number with the focused intensity of a laser, single-mindedly plowing through verses and choruses without so much as stopping to catch a breath. He plays the song with pure, sweaty, unhinged abandon, hurling himself across his piano, pounding the keys into submission, making it spit forth notes like a flamethrower, slaughtering the air around him with pure sound. His vocals, meanwhile, channel the very spirit of rock n roll, dripping with enough soul and sexuality to turn a nun into a go-go dancer (trust me, I've tried. Controlled experiment. I'd do anything for science, you know). His vocals transcend whatever lyrics he happens to be singing- the guy could be belting out the copyright information to a Portugese biology textbook and make it sound like a dance craze. In other words, Jerry's performance is rock in its ideal form, a frenzied blast of blood-curdling ferocity that'll make you dance, scream, and beat up the guy next to you all at the same time. Just like Beethoven or the Beatles, it's music for the ages. If you're human, get this. Get this now. Good golly.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-04-17

This is absolutely an Awesome, Incediary performance by the Killer. His backing band, The Nashville Teens, put in a great performance trying to keep up; they lose it now and again but Jerry Lee drags them back to the fold. I can't add too much more here, the other reviewers have covered this album quite well so all I'll say is go out and get it and enjoy probably the best live album ever released.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate!.......2007-04-08

This is the BEST Jerry Lee Lewis album....Period.
If you like his rockin stuff, you WILL love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2007-01-27

5 out of 5 stars This Man's a Genius.......2006-12-30

I "discovered" Junior Brown about 6 months ago when CMT ran the video of (his song) Highway Patrol. At first the quirky black and white presentation caught my eye while the solid beat caught my ear. Then Junior ripped into his Guit-Steel solo and I was mesmerized. I love good guitar playing, and style (Jazz, Country, Rock)doesn't really matter to me. If it's well played I'll listen to it. Anyway, I wanted to pick up a Junior album with Highway. I settled on this one. When I bought it, I listened to it about four times in a row all the way through, and then ordered another Junior Brown CD. If you can appreciate good guitar and real musical talent then you won't be disappointed by this album. I think I know good music when I hear it, and I can summarize this album and Junior Brown in one sentence: This Man's a Genius.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-10-19

I was there the night he recorded this album, I was walking down South Congress when I heard that guitar and a super deep voice. I'm a long time Junior Brown fan, so needless to say I freaked out when I walked up to the Continental Club to see the man himself was on stage. The price at the door was about $25, so this album is a bargain.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been better, but this will have to do........2006-09-27

This is a tough review for me to write as I am a total Junior Brown fanatic. I've seen him play many, many times and I've been waiting for a live album forever. Unfortunately, this wasn't his best night. You have to understand Junior is constantly touring - how he is able to get up on stage night after night after night playing the same songs is beyond me, but I'm still happy to hear him in whatever town I'm lucky to catch him in. For the most part Junior sounds tired on these tracks (he sounds great on "Juan Charasquado" though). Maybe he ought to take a few months off and let his batteries recharge or something. I wish he'd included "Freeborn Man" on this cd - the difference between the studio version and live is huge; I've heard him play what can only be described as an incredibly intense, blistering version of it live that had me shaking in ECSTACY - but it is not here. It's GREAT to hear "I Want To Live and Love Always" live, but it just isn't as good without Steve Layne playing and singing along. The "Rock and Roll Guitar Medley" is always a treat but it would have been SO MUCH BETTER if "Ghost Riders In The Sky" and Sergio Leone western themes were included again in the mix (hint, hint Jr. for future road dates).

3 out of 5 stars Better to see him live than to listen to this live disc............2006-07-25

I have seen Junior Brown live a few times and I am always amazed at his guitar prowess, however I am very disappointed in this particular release:

1-First of all its only 52 min. long. A cd has about approximately 79 minutes of available space, and with Junior's songs being relatively short, there could have been 25 minutes more music on here.

2-The set list isn't the best.....there are MANY definitive Junior tracks which don't show up here at all.

3-Aside from the last track (Rock and Roll Guitar Medley) the performance here is rather lifeless, the singing sounds tired and strictly by the numbers....no flash, electricity or energy Junior usually provides in his LIVE shows...on this, he tends to simply 'phone it in'.

I really love Junior Brown and his music/guitar abilities, but this disc doesn't not reflect his ability as a performer, just that of a guitar picker.

4 out of 5 stars Junior Brown Live is an alopated, psychotronic, swampadelic experience!.......2006-03-24

The Man of 'Guit-Steel' does it again. I saw him once
in Virginia Beahc, VA at the Naval Base in an outdoor
free show! I would have paid hundreds, though. He and
his band are excellent and he is very funny and enter-
taining as well, "Get that hippie off stage". No way!
