Johnny Ace's greatest hit, the dirge-like blues ballad "Pledging My Love," will forever be entwined with the shocking story of his death during a game of Russian roulette in Houston on Christmas Eve, 1954. The opening track on Duke's Memorial Album, it sounds--with its stark beat, chiming vibes, and Western-saloon piano--as if it had been sung by a ghost. An original member of Memphis's Beale Streeters, piano man Ace could also do rollicking R&B ("Don't You Know"), but Memorial Album is top-heavy with all things slow and mournful: "The Clock" and "Never Let Me Go" were essentially prototypes for the posthumously-released "Pledging My Love," and the lugubrious "Anymore" was its identical follow-up. --Barney Hoskyns

4 out of 5 stars Rock's First Casualty.......2006-07-04

Johnny Ace sure knew his way around a love ballad. Slow and steady as Sinatra, smooth as Dean Martin, yet his violent, senseless death hovers inevitably over every thing he recorded, making his vocals seem ghostly and haunted rather than romantic. He died backstage at a concert playing russian roulette on Christmas Eve, or so the story goes. Who plays russian roulette before they go onstage? Maybe he owed money to the wrong people and was set up but we'll never know for sure. All we have is these classic recordings and that is more than enough. "Pledging My Love" is his immortal classic and "Anymore" is it's soundalike follow up. "My Song" is his unheralded classic. Aretha Franklin's version of this must be heard as it is one of her finest recordings. He does a few uptempo jump blues numbers like "Don't You Know" and "How Can You Be So Mean" that remind me of early rock 'n roll like Bill Haley. Along with James Dean, his was one of those young deaths that greatly affected youth of his era much like Tupac or Cobain in the 90's. Paul Simon wrote "The Late Great Johnny Ace" about him on his Hearts And Bones album back in 1983. He was indeed an affecting and haunting singer and something supernatural hangs over his music. Whatever it was, it lingers still.

5 out of 5 stars PLEDGING MY LOVE !.......2006-07-02

Johnny Ace will be most remembered for this soul stirring ballad. His life might have ended, but his music lives on. It's a shame his life ended by playing a "game" of russian roulette. What was he thinking? Such a terrible tragedy. R.I.P. !!

5 out of 5 stars Has Finally Been Updated.......2005-11-21

This has, for thirty years, been the only collection of the late Johnny Ace's material. It's rather skimpy - 12 tracks, about thirty minutes long. But it's still great, with the selection leaning heavily on Ace's ballad work, with a few r&b ravers thrown in for variety. Just this past summer of 2005, a new Johnny Ace compilation was released with twice the amount of material and new remastering and liner notes. The new cd is the obvious version to pick up. It's about time.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I was born when Johnny Ace was alive........2005-03-15

I have listened to the blues kind of music for a long time and my very favorte is Johnny Ace. I wish he made more music and I wish he didn't die.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars it's the music.......2005-12-22

I had been leary of getting this CD only for the fact that I thought the sound quality would suck---it doesn't. But what it does do is pay tribute to one of the most underated guitarists/producer/arranger in my rock realm. This CD is fantastic on a number of levels. Sure Bowie is missing from this (on tour perhaps but a slight nonetheless), but the other musicians make up for it.

CD1 is the weak part--I'll be honest. That's why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. Some great artists--Gary Brooker, Mick Jones, Bill Wyman, Steve Harley and Dana Gillespie (the years have not been kind to her --sorry) but the music just doesn't fit with what I thought the show could've been.

CD2, though, is worth the price of admission! The Spiders From Mars segment is the best of the bunch (except for Ian--more later).
Who knew that Bill Nelson from Be-Bop Deluxe was a fan?!?! They motor through Width, Ziggy, Moonage, White Light, Suffragette, and a great Angel #9. Find Pure Praire League's second album that has Amie on it and you'll find Angel #9 and Mick Ronson all over the LP.
Ian is also one of my musical heroes, and he doesn't fail. A live version of Resurrection Mary (only on the Artful Dodger CD--out of print) is a great treat. Michael Picasso WILL bring you to tears or close to it. It's the same version as on Ian's double best-of CD except for the intro which is priceless and so moving--talking to 'Mick's Mum' in the audience. Dudes ends it (fittingly) in a Mott style free for all. The back photo says it all-- Ian, his daughter Traci, Joe Elliott, Maggie Ronson and her daughter Lisa and bunch of others.
Should Bowie have been there---yes
Is the Cd any worse without him--no

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A Very Fond Tribute!.......2002-12-12

I FINALLY found this CD after trying to get it for nearly 2 years, and it was WELL worth the wait! This is a very fond and heartfelt tribute to a man so revered for his immense musical talents, but in some strange way, still didn't get ALL of the respect that he was so deserving of! The biggest letdown of this tremendous album is the conspicuous absence of David Bowie; I feel his not appearing on this album a show of GREAT disrespect! What was Bowie doing then that was SO important that he couldn't afford the time to pay tribute to the man that he owes his entire CAREER to? How sad that is!

Well, no matter...the treasure trove of talent that DID appear on this album MORE than makes up for Bowie's absence; everyone from Joe Elliott and Phil Collen of Def Leppard, Roger Daltrey of The Who, Roger Taylor of Queen, and Ian Hunter from Mott The Hoople and the Ronson/Hunter projects of the 1970's. Also appearing were the original Spiders From Mars (Mick "Woody" Woodmansey and Trevor Bolder) in a reunion set, as well as a brief appearance by another of my guitar heroes, Bill Nelson! Everyone involved turned in great performances, especially Ian Hunter, who contributed the lovingly personal song "Michael Picasso" to Ronson's memory; I'm sure there wasn't a dry eye in the entire theater that night!

Some of the "surprise" appearances on the album come from ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman (performing with his side project, Willy & The Poor Boys), Mick Jones and Big Audio Dynamite, and also Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel, turning in a wonderfully rousing version of his classic "Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)". Wrapping things up on this generous 3-CD set is the tour-de-force finale "All The Young Dudes", played by all of the contributing musicians; a very fitting show closer!

As tribute concerts go, this along with the Freddie Mercury tribute held the year before (which turned out to be Mick Ronson's final appearance) are the cream of the crop; they don't get any better than this! "Memorial Concert" is a limited edition of 5,000 copies and will more than likely go out of print again like the original 1997 issue. For old and new fans of Mick Ronson, this is a MUST HAVE; you'll enjoy it immensely, and it's a great way to remember a wonderful man and musician!

3 out of 5 stars Rest In Peace, Mick.......2001-09-29

Well...I suppose this could have been worse, what with the inclusion of "performances" by The Rats, Glen (ex-Sex Pistol) Matlock, Mick Jones & BAD, & Steve Harley, whoever he is. But then, wait...Mick Ronson did so much for SO many people, whether production or performance...and they're all represented here, too. (Thank God Johnny C Mellonbrain wasn't represented). There's Gray Brooker doing a quiet, acoustic piano version of his own/Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale," which segues into Bill Wyman's post-Stones Willie & The Poor Boys, "Mystery Train," the very same song Elvis did 40 years earlier. There's Roger Taylor doing Queen's "It's A Kind Of Magic," (which HE wrote, but his vocals are nowhere in the same league as - duh - Freddie's), and then a performance by the Spiders From Mars, the group that, with Mick, was David Bowie's band during his Ziggy days - although it's kind of an insult to drag out Def Leppard's singer & "lead" guitarist to fill in for Mick & Dave. And what show either by or about Mick Ronson would be complete without Ian Hunter? Ian does a creditible version of "Once Bitten," but his tribute to Mick, "Michael Picasso" WILL bring tears to the eyes of even the most jaded listener. Then Roger Daltrey (!) performs "Baba O'Riley,"& "Summertime Blues." And, of course, the show's "grand finale" is yet another version of "All The Young Dudes." There's also a CD-ROM showing Tayor's "Magic" and, of course, "Dudes." All in all - still: a great tribute to a GREAT Man. RIP, Mick.

Without a doubt...an anointed tribute to an anointed man of God. I can never listen to the song, Look at the Blessings, without crying. Not tears of sadness...but tears of joy...tears of gratitude..."It is a blessing to have a tongue that will move and say, Thank you Jesus! ...Look around you...ain't God a good God. ...we all ought to look around us today and tell the world...Just look at the blessings, can't you see them all around us..." Awesome testimony to the goodness of God! God bless all!

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Willie Banks.......2001-04-07

Willie Banks was truly a gift from Heaven for those of us needing a spiritual anchor in our walk with Christ. I was first introduced to Willie in North Carolina and his Spirit-filled voice caused me to examine my life and the things I did not in accordance with God's Will. While I sinned further and fell short of the glory of God, I have recently rededicated my life to Jesus and I'm so glad my old friend Willie is here to greet me.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Willie Banks.......2000-04-05

Willie Banks is one of the most inspiring gospel legends, that has ever lived. I bought this C D in 1993 and from time to time when im down I listen to Just Look At The Blessings, and Gods Goodness. The words to these songs are truly a blessing. Every word he sings you can truly feel the passion in his voice as they come directly from his heart. He will be truly missed. A must have in your record collection.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional and inspiringI.......1999-07-24

I had the cassett and it was very inspiring to me and my family. I lost my cassett when I moved to Washington and I would love to see if it can be replaced with the CD, whenever it becomes available.

Clifford Brown emerged fully formed in 1953, a trumpeter gifted with an ebullient swing and technical skills that added polish and precision to fresh invention. Foregoing both the manic pyrotechnics of Dizzy Gillespie and the laconic introversion of Miles Davis, he also provided a stylistic model for jazz trumpeters that has never gone out of style. This CD combines Brown's first two recording dates as leader, placing him in quintet and sextet settings with some of the core musicians of the New York bop scene. The first nine tracks have Brown in an inspired quintet, prodded by the twisting, off-kilter solos and comping of the brilliant and underrated pianist Elmo Hope and the sparkling complexity of drummer Philly Joe Jones. While altoist Lou Donaldson is deeply in the sway of Charlie Parker, Brown sets his own course, whether it's the boppish "Cookin'" or the standard "You Go to My Head." The final nine tracks have Art Blakey's drums driving the sextet, while altoist Gigi Gryce's understated concentration acts as an effective foil to Brown's joyous, dancing lines. Taken at a medium up-tempo, "Cherokee" is one of Brown's most effective vehicles. The alternate takes from each session highlight Brown's spontaneous creativity, while Rudy Van Gelder's remastering adds fresh focus to both his gorgeous tone and the explosive drumming. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I'm New TO CB, and this was a good intro !!.......2004-11-23

I'll admit, I first heard Clifford Brown's name at a Rick Braun concert a few years back. Based on that mention, I purchased several different CB projects. Although I have listened to another one, this is my first review of his recordings. I also have read the other reviews. Briefly, this CD has more "laid back" tracks than other CB work. Although every track is not that way, it appears to me to be restrained. Other reviewers have the historical notes. My research indicates they are correct. Essentially, later CB projects became edgier and "hard bop." Like most music, your mood dictates what you want to listen too. This project is for that soft or smooth side. Enjoy!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but there are better CB albums to be had.......2002-08-06

These 18 tracks comprise 2 different recording sessions early in Brownie's all too brief career. Tracks #1 thru #9 were recorded June 9th 1953 at WOR studios in NYC, with CB on trumpet, Lou Donaldson on alto sax, Elmo Hope on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Tracks #10 thru #18 were recorded August 28th 1953 at Audio Video Studios in NYC, with Gigi Gryce on alto, Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums.

This is both a nice and underwhelming remaster due to a few facts. Nice because it represents each session in its entirety, unlike the original 12" LP release (which was different than the 2 sessions' original release on 2 10"LPs.) Underwhelming because even with the remaster there is still an audible low-level buzz on some of the June 9th tracks, which is inherent to the source tape, as well as drop-outs on track 17.

Seasoned CB fans should appreciate this release, but the casual or uninitiated would almost certainly be better off with Brownie's work with Max Roach during the final two years of his career. There is a fire in that material that really outshines the more conservative and rote impressions given here.

It doesn't get any better than this, soul-jazz wise. Tune #7, Moon of Manakoora, is a quintessential expression of a medium-tempo swinger--who says you can't dance to jazz?--with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Shirley Scott in fine form. The CD also features "Soul Shouting" with Stanley Turrentine (who was once married to Shirley), among other funky jazz classics. If you like organ/tenor jazz, this would be a great addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Dolphy, a sure candidate for musical sainthood.......2005-12-09

In a musical genre laden with tragedies, I've always found Eric Dolphy's to be the most affecting. Here was a musician so proficient, so captivating, so fearless -- and yet, all one ever hears from the survivors around him is how kind and generous the man was. And then, to be felled by undiagnosed diabetes -- just awful.

As far as I'm concerned, just about everything in the man's discography is essential, including the disc in question. There may be other, "more essential" albums ("Out to Lunch", "Out There", Mal Waldron's "The Quest", "Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus" to name a few) but there's no question that this collection is a major work from a major artist. Every note is so *alive*. Listen to "Music Matador". Eric injects such passion, such anguish into the deluge of otherwise familiar calypso notes that I can't help but twitch in sympathy. Or "Alone Together", an epic bass/bass clarinet duel performed with the help of the great Richard Davis -- this piece is so deeply involving and intense it almost caused me to rear-end a fellow in front of me.

Perhaps best of all is another in the string of the man's brilliant solo alto efforts, "Love Me", which closes the disc, but there's really not a dull moment in the entire hour and fifteen minutes. Such notes, such passion. There'll never be another.

3 out of 5 stars Extra material.......2007-03-26

While anything with Dolphy is worth having in my opinion, this CD contains a couple of extra songs that were left off the Live at the Five Spot sessions. The rhythm section is very prominent in the 2 longs songs. CD only about 30 to 35 minutes. Would have been much better if these were packaged with one of the original CDs, which weren't overly song.

5 out of 5 stars This album Smokes!.......2006-03-24

Two songs, but killer performances by all members. Booker's Waltz has 3 of the most memorable solos I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Essential early sixties Dolphy.......2000-06-16

The Memorial Album, although titled differently, was recorded the same night at the Five Spot club as Dolphy's other two "Live at the Five Spot" albums. Those who have either of the other two albums from that night will find this album essential. The quintet that Dolphy has assembled, although not nearly as famous as the Coltrane or Davis bands from the sixties, works wonderfully together. The rhythm section of Richard Davis, Ed Blackwell, and Mal Waldron work together beautifully, even if without show. Davis has always been a rather reserved yet lyrical bassist and his style is well shown here. Waldron tends to build solos around simple chordal patterns and then play with different harmonic sequences and rhythmic changes around those patterns. His playing is quite like on his own album of the same time "The Quest," although without the darkness of tone. Here, he is given ample free space and provides a nice finish to the solos of Little and Dolphy. Booker Little, in his early twenties, was a rising star at the time of the recording. He plays with both deft technique and mature confidence and provides a nice counterpart to the virtuoso Dolphy. Dolphy shows the same great technique as he did with COltrane at about the same. He seems well suited to this setting and takes quite long solos, always building around a theme while also showcasing his wondrous talents. While not as avant guard as some of his later recording, this certianly show the talent that he was. Overall, this is a great CD that should on the shelf of any Dolphy fan. Little died soon after this recording and so it is one of the select few out there with him on it. The only negative of the CD is that it has very poor sound quality. However, this is but a small criticism for an otherwise first rate album.

5 out of 5 stars Good compilation of his early work.......2002-02-18

Obviously a compilation of love -- it sounds like a mix a friend might make you of favorites. These are all his old recordings (also nicely sampled on Reconsider Me, the golden set) - and some of the funky 70s stuff. Nothing from the later Rounder recordings -- a worthwhile exploration into his earlier work for those unfamiliar with it. (And I'm of the opinion that you can't buy a bad Johnny Adams recording.) I like "Hell Yes I Cheated," "You Made a New Man Out of Me," and of course the perennial classic "Reconsider Me." Good stuff! You won't regret the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny Kidd.......2007-05-10

Early British Rock 'n' Roll had one uncompromising act in Johnny Kidd &
The Pirates. In this day of Johny Depp, maybe Kidd didn't screw up that
bad with his moniker. He sure didn't with his music. When others went for the softer side, Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Adam Faith and even Marty
Wilde and Tommy Steele, Kidd rocked on.

So he did covers, so what. At times his versions were better than the
American ones. Not knocking the U.S. originals but Kidd made them his own.
The Who owes a lot to "Shakin' All Over" just to name one tune. If the
British TV series "Top Of The Pops" tapes are still around, I hope they
get released. But those tapes were probably taped over, those cheap BBC
idiots who are probably now knighted for their frugality.

Enough remorse...we still have these recordings. Kidd rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Some precisions about these 2 records on this CD.......2003-11-05

The two records put together on this Johnny Kidd CD are not from a UK origin as it seems to be understood. Both were prepaired by a french fan named GEORGE COLLANGE, co-operating with french label Pathe Marconi which issued them first (C 062-04422 in May 1970, and 2C 062-04731 in 1971 for the 2nd one). I'm sure of this because I (Serge Dumonteil, aka Stevie Dixon) contributed to the titles compilation on the 1st one, with my friend Jacques Grimbot. And another friend Yves Chantereau (aka Roll Chanty !) drew the J.Kidd portrait which appeared on the "Memorial Album". Which is the best of the two as it is said in the other review which is quite relevant.

4 out of 5 stars The forgotten premier British rock group before the Beatles.......2003-05-24

Test your knowledge of rock 'n' roll history: what was the premier rock 'n' roll band in England before the Beatles? Okay, the answer is subjective, but let me make the case for Johnny Kidd & the Pirates. The short version would be to say that this group was the Who before the Who were the Who (in fact in their early days the Who played on the same bill with the Pirates). Johnny Kidd (born Frederick Heath) started off with a skiffle group, just like the Beatles, and eventually formed the group known as Johnny Kidd & the Pirates with Alan Caddy on guitar, Tony Docherty playing rhythm guitar, and drummer Ken McKay, which was signed to EMI.

The group had one hit, "Shakin' All Over," which is considered the first international rock classic. But it was their first record, "Please Don't Touch," that is more representative of their style. We are talking R&B-based rock for the original compositions counterbalanced by some less than stellar covers of recognizable standards like "Doctor Feelgood" and "Your Cheating Heart." The best way to describe Johnny Kidd's vocals is that he signs exactly like every parent who worried that rock `n' roll was the devil's music feared. Ironically, "Shakin' All Over" was originally the B-Side for a lame cover of "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," but somehow disc jockeys were able to tell which was the better song and the result was rather eye-opening in terms of what could be produced by an English rock `n' roll band. Historically, I can make the argument that Kidd and Caddy were the first standout singer and guitarist duo fronting a band. Before Jagger and Richards, these two were the guys.

Unfortunately, the group's nickname served as a liability because they insisted on dressing up as pirates on stage (pause for a moment and reflect in horror on the Beatles taking the same approach). All reports are that they put on a wild stage show, but as long as the lead singer was wearing an eye patch it had to undercut their credibility. Add to that the fact the EMI did not know what to do with the group, which underwent almost constant changes in membership until 1966 when Kidd was killed in a car crash. This explains why the first of the two albums on this CD is called "The Johnny Kidd Memorial Album." It is not a question of making a case for which of the two albums is better, that one of "Your Cheatin' Heart," because the clear division is between the raw rock `n' roll of the original compositions and the covers. The latter just do not sound as true. From a historical perspective Johnny Kidd and the Pirates are the road not taken and you can only wonder what would have happened if they found a savvy manager like Brian Epstein or a first class producer like George Martin.
