Amazon.com essential recording

A wonderful meeting of two institutions of American music, this 1954 album was the finest recording of Louis Armstrong's later career, with the great trumpeter-singer turning to material that was very close to his roots. Both W.C. Handy and Armstrong had a complex relationship with the blues, an essential source for both Handy's popular songs and Armstrong's improvisational art, and these recordings touch on the heart of the matter. On "Yellow Dog Blues," a product of Handy's own early and chance encounter with the rural blues, there's a majesty that recalls Armstrong's early recordings with Bessie Smith. Armstrong is clearly inspired by the classic material and the chance to stretch out on record, and his regular band of the period joins in perfectly. Trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, and singer Velma Middleton contribute stellar solos and support, while bassist Arvell Shaw and drummer Barrett Deems do an exceptional job of keeping the slower tempos rock steady. This is a deeply moving and consummately executed performance. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Great, simply Great!.......2007-07-20

Statch never sounded better. This takes one back several years and, of course, Beale Street Blues is a favorite of almost all Blues lovers. Great remake and collection.

5 out of 5 stars Could anything be better Needs 2000 stars.......2007-06-29

This album is one of the best recordings of any kind I have ever heard. Now I have thousands of recordings, write seriously about music, and have a lot of Louis, but this is one of those CDs that are simply hard to get out of the player. Forget about the historical significance of the recordings, the extras which include a few rehearsal cuts with the band getting itself ready, a fine excerpt from an interview with Handy, and a nice little joke--not necessarily one that could be told on network television--by Louis, and the well documented notes.

The sound here is great. It has some of the best of Louis's sound in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when despite the All-stars claims to reproduce the orginal pre-Swing sound of Armstrong's earlier groups, Louis shows the way he truly swung in both singing in playing far beyond the youthful athletics of the Chicago recordings. These blues swing so nice warm and easy, although some like his great recording of "The Saint Louis Blues" swing very hard. If you want to learn the basics of swing rhythm at a reasonable pace, I would advise listening to these recordings and trying to play along with them. (Of course, I would also recommend the great piano and rhythm section sides Basie cut to get out of his Decca Contract in the mid 1930s.)

There is something soooooo much more joyous about these recordings than any of Louis's recordings of these or similar tunes in the 1920s and 1930s. His voice and trumpet playing no longer strain but are sure of the mastery of the material. Both he and vocalist Velma Middleton seem to be really enjoying themselves with this material.

It must be stressed that Handy's real contribution was the combination of the Blues with the level of arrangement and composition that professional Black entertainers of his time--a time of a great explosion of both professional skill, knowledge, diversity of style, and polish--had obtained. His Blues including selections on this piece like "The St. Louis Blues" and "The Memphis Blues" and the immortal "Beale Street Blues" often combined Blues with all sorts of music popular at the time especially Ragtime, the reigning popular music of Handy's time in Memphis, with traces of Latin music like the habenero tango strain in the St Louis Blues. Yet, while quite willing to copyright these products of Black folk culture and create his own publishing business based on them (one of the first the realize the money in getting songs recorded as well as selling sheet music, Handy was insistent about the folk sources of his blues, as well as the fact that they were what Black folks demanded to dance to.

Getting Louis, himself a product of the generation that saw Jazz emerge as the child of the marriage of Blues and Ragtime given the tools of the high level of musicianship and formal musical knowledge consumated by Handy and his generation, to record these tunes was a stroke of Genius. You can hear Louis feeling happy and at home, but you can also hear a special reverence for the music, the time and the point of the music, as well how much BETTER the development of Jazz and Swing in the decades since Handy's days had made his ability to play these songs. It is no wonder that Handy himself cried tears of joy when he heard these recordings.

George Avakian who produced both the original recordings and the 1996 reissue on CD, spent about twenty years hunting down the best of the original recordings and takes, before rereleasing this really high quality recording.

A nice, wonderful, historic album that is pure joy and fun.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for Lovers of Satchmo, Blues, or Jazz!!.......2007-04-22

Given the fact that WC Handy and Satch had parallel careers and Handy's compositions and Pops' magic are a natural combination, that alone makes this a "no-brainer" for anyone looking for great jazz. But in this particular package, there are several alternative takes as well as rehearsal "patter" that gives the listener a glimpse into what a Satchmo record date was like, as well as what a craftsman he was in his art! The "Alligator Story" is worth the price of the CD itself!! Listening to this disc deepened my love for the man and his music if that was even possible. This is a must have for the novice listener as well as the seasoned fan. Go ahead...."Place in Cart"....you'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars The Beauty of Classical Jazz.......2006-08-13

What a magnificent CD!
I heard this album in the LP form at the beginnings of my explorations into jazz but, as the CD era started, I was warned that the 80's CD of "Armstrong plays W. C. Handy" contains inferior alternate versions.
The producer George Avakian explains in this 1997 CD what happened and how painstaking and meticolous research and restoration resulted in this issue, basically equall to the original album, although the recording company had lost not only masters but the back-up copies as well. So, all the compliments go to Mr. Avakian, the producer and the restorer of this music.

This is one of my favorite jazz albums and I feel it proves that Louis in the 50's could very well reach his Hot fives and Hot seven hights. Whether it is "Loveless love", "Chantez les-bas" or the ingenious and rightly famous "St. Louis Blues", Satchmo shines both through the clear sound of his trumpet and through the expressive groan and grumble of his vocal chords (how do such divine voices come about? Did he work on it or was it a gift?).

His accompanying ensemble is also great, particularly the explosive trombonist Trummy Young, who was rightly famous for his work in Lunceford's big band in the swing era, but seems liberated in Satchmo's All-stars concept - he propelles ensemble choruses and plays inspiring solos (Bigard is also great but his best work was done in the swing era with Ellington).

It is quite amazing that critics in the 50's didn't take Satchmo seriously enough but so it goes with music, cinema or anything else: Artists who still develops their concept when younger cats follow completely different leaders often go unnoticed. Fortunatelly, Armstrong was able to attract some of the non-jazz crowd and become popular entertainer, so he had a great amount of artistic liberty.
Additional attractions of this seminal album are rehearsing sequences and short interviews with Satchmo and W. C. Handy.

Don't expect a second line of denizens from Odessa to come marching down the street behind this band. Rather, you should steel yourself for energetic, aggressive, modern music with deep respect for the roots of klezmer but a determined forward approach and a bit of a sly, sideways grin. It's all fair game for this band that ruthlessly mixes Jewish theater with a Louis Armstrong downbeat or a Latin backbeat. Expert musicianship and tight chops are tempered by a sense of humor that produces songs to match zany titles like "Struttin' with Some Doner Kebab," "Moroccan Roller," and "Not Too Eggy." Whether it's Arab and Jewish jazz or rock and locks, this band produces a big sound. Accordion, clarinets, and saxophones dance with a heavy rhythm section, particularly induced by drummer Kevin O'Day and bass partner Arthur Kastler. Great tunes; not a tchotchke in the lot. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Better than you might think!.......2002-06-19

At first glance, you might give these guys the cold shoulder. With their klezmer stylings, along with accordian, guitar, and bass, you might think these guys would be most at home at a Bar Mitzvah.

You'd be dead wrong. I saw these guys play their songs from this CD at New Orleans and they TORE THE PLACE UP! These guys are unbelievable. You will not be able to keep yourself from dancing. Not only is their musicianship unbelievable, but they also know how to groove like no other.

If you can, I recommend you see them live. Barring that, the CD will do you just fine.

5 out of 5 stars You must own this album!.......1999-10-04

This band is fierce and festive! They are rich with passion, humor and artistry. I have never gotten hooked on a sound so immediately and fervently. Every song is a mad celebration!

5 out of 5 stars Jazz & Klezmer flying at you.......1999-08-19

These guys tear it up! With the strange yet exciting combination of Klezmer and Jazz in a whirl wind of notes. For anyone who is interested in Jazz, Klezmer or even a little funk this is a must. Also check out their other CDs and Galactic which has Ben Ellman (sax) and their origional drummer Stanton More. Also check Stanton's CD featuring Ben.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT Zydeco CD!!! Wish I could give it 10 stars........2002-02-10

This CD has awesome music on it!! I visit New Orleans every now and then and love walking through the French Quarter and hearing zydeco music pouring out of the open doors to the clubs. This CD brings me back there even when I can't physically travel there. If you're looking for a CD to commemorate your trip to New Orleans, THIS IS THE ONE!! It's sold in most of the little shops, but try the one right across the street from House of Blues -- they had it for less than the other stores were selling it for.

5 out of 5 stars memories of New Orleans.......2000-11-24

While walking Bourbon St.;we were drawn to a gift shop, by the most wonderful, happy, feet stomping music we've ever heard. We were delighted, when the owner said we could purchase the disk. After we returned to Pennsylvania, we bought several other Zydeco disks, only to be disappointed, when compared to The Zydeco All Stars. We highly recommend this disk. Joe @ Marcy Eckley

In recent years, a number of young bands have pushed the envelope of the traditional Yiddish music of klezmer by combining it with American pop influences. New York's Klezmatics have attracted the most attention with provocative album titles such as Rhythm & Jews and Jews with Horns, but no one has extended the possibilities of klezmer further than the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars. As their name implies, they combine the Eastern European music with their hometown's bacchanalian jazz and rhythm & blues. On The Big Kibosh, the septet adds elements of funk and avant-garde collage. At times they push their luck too far and lose the wonderful balance of old and new that marked their two earlier albums. On the other hand, these young players have become such impressive musicians that it's exciting to hear them take such chances. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Klezmer Music!.......2001-02-25

When I was looking for something new at Best Buy, I had to sift through a ton of unoriginal, cookie-cutter mainstream trash before I got to the Folk section. But that's another story. I picked up "The Big Kibosh" not knowing what kind of music it was, i just thought the cover was interesting. Well, i was pleasantly surprised-accordions have never sounded as good as this before! I do like that they have an accordion; some bands choose to go without one, and that can be good too, but this accordionist is accomplished beyond belief! They start out on the right, upbeat, crazy note with the spirit-lifting "Wake-up Call", which puts you in the mood for the wonderful craziness that pervades the rest of the CD, stopping only for "transition to buffet" and picking right back up again. I would not recommend spinning this one when you are uptight, nervous or anxious, because the many different sounds, the fast pace and the ever-changing tempos and tunes sre not meant to calm you down. Some of the songs near the end of the CD give the impression that they were running low on inspiration, but just when you're about to skip back to the early tracks, on comes the spectacular violin-based "Bob's birthday song", where the phrasing is so vivid that you can just see the circus clowns serenading their friend Bob. "Bweep Bweep" could have been improved by stopping after 10 minutes, but it is a fantastic, catchy song. Overall, a fantastic intro to the wonderful world of klezmer music.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2000-11-14

This ins't just a CD that contains Klezmer music, it contains Klezmer music and great songs, all well as wacky sounds. My dad showed it to me a lond time ago, and it was my first introduction to Kelzmer music. Now I'm looking foward to hearing their other CD.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible combination of innovative jazz and klezmer!!!.......1998-07-30

This group has really got it together. They've managed to take klezmer music and combine it with innovative and exciting modern jazz rifts and style. The music also reflects they're New Orleans heritage which adds an additional element of complexity and excitement. This album is an absolute must for anyone who believes groups should not play to the lowest common denominator!!!!! Itzhak Perlman would add some real spice to his act with this group in tow!

This spirited project from Beausoleil leader Michael Doucet brings together noted Cajun musicians while offering a traditional bayou feast for the ears. Accompanying a handful of Beausoleil musicians, drummer Mike Burch (River Road), Mitchell Reed (Mamou Prairie Band), and guitarist Christina Balfa (Balfa Toujours) all guest-appeared to mix up some spicy musical magic in Dockside Studios near Lafayette, Louisiana. The result is a down-home collection of old Cajun standards, waltzes, and Doucet originals that will please both country and Cajun listeners. The violins sing, the accordions dance, the guitars slip and slide. As yummy as a giant bowl of jambalaya. --Karen Karleski

3 out of 5 stars They needed an audience!.......2000-04-20

Based on the musicians, this should have been a terrific album. Unfortunately, it lacks the vitality and just plain good fun that cajun/zydeco should have. I suspect that too much time was spent getting the tracks studio perfect instead of the musicians just having a great time with one another.

4 out of 5 stars ONE MORE TIME!.......2000-04-05

Cajun music is an awful lot like the food traditions. You throw okra, chicken, onions, tomatoes, cayenne pepper, file and a lot of other ingredients into a pot and let it simmer for hours. The result is a rich, full and delicious dish like gumbo. Well, Cajun music is an awful lot like that as well. Born and bred in the bayous of the South, French ancestry mixed with influences like bluegrass, jazz, blues, maybe even rhythms of the Caribbean region to create a rich style of music called Cajun music. It's undeniably unique but enormously enjoyable. I have had some people tell me that they didn't like this kind of music and that it reminded them of "hick" music. I couldn't disagree more. The culture behind Cajuns is rich, varied and just a valid as any culture in Europe or Asia.

For me this music was pure unadulterated fun! The tracks are SO catchy and musical I felt like grabbing my gumbo and strutting my stuff around the house! This CD has brought together many talented musicians for a jam session that is second to none. Give yourself a chance to REALLY listen to the improvisation and technique. It's great! I've listened to Cajun music before but nothing that was as appealing as this CD. Once it started I wanted it to go and go forever. If you're having a Cajun theme dinner with some friends, pop this CD in and crank up the volume! I dare you to NOT want to keep going after track #1!

4 out of 5 stars catchy solid klezmer.......2003-12-16

The album cover of a superhero with a Star of David on his chest kicking off his shoes and blasting off from an Eastern European landscape is an example of the band's humor. Yes, they are from New Orleans, Jewish and play straight-forward klezmer. The group has opened for the jam band Phish as well as more Yiddish oriented concerts. As far as the type of music their name may imply, you could close your eyes and not know what century you were in. But a glance at track names such as Goodbye Big Homey and Naftuna Melt gives them away as modern.

The accordion, clarinet and violin are the lead instruments in this all instrumental album. Many songs are short, fast freilich's, written by the aptly named Jonathan Freilich, Robert Wagner, Glenn Hartman and the rest of the six piece band. Others are long, slow and sultry doinas and other are combinations, starting slow and building into a frenzy of intricate solos.

The Owl is a fluttery solo clarinet and a good example of the groups instrumental virtuosity. The title track starts slow and ends with an impossibly fast clarinet jam. Other songs use just one or two instruments. Jews Blues is more like a bulgar and could come straight out of Fiddler on the Roof. A couple tracks have reverb filled electric guitars shifting back and forth with swirling clarinets.

Unlike their previous albums, there is no saxophone and a couple of changes in band members. About half the songs are written by the band, the others being traditional klezmer melodies. A Heimesher Sher by Dave Tarras, the influential American clarinetist keeps with the original structure and sound but is performed with a rock guitar and electric bass. Also familiar to many will be Fun Tashlich also recorded by Cleveland's Yiddishe Cup Klezmer Band.

If you're looking to check out the band, or any good klezmer music, this is a solid example.

As a side note, we used Borvis, the catchy title track for our Intro to Recording class from the Cuyahoga Community College Recording Arts and Technology program taught by electronic recording artist Warren "Hanna" Harris. We listend to the piece repeatedly and discussed it's song structure, instrumentation and how it was recorded. Only Warren Harris would notice that that there is a breath from the left speaker in the first minute of the track. Students who had a hard time even pronouncing the word klezmer were humming the tune for the rest of the day.

Of all the music coming out of New Orleans these guy have been around longer than most and I think that they still don't get enough of the recognition that they deserve as a group, but individually, members past and present, their respective bands are some of the country's most sought after and beloved. Ben Ellman of Galactic, Robert Wagner of Robert Wagner Trio, Glenn Hartman's "The World Accordian to Glenn..., Mean Willie Green of the Neville Brothers and The Mean Green Machine, Jonathan Freilich et al.
You Have to check out these guys' cd's past and present. As an avid collector and listener I know you will want as much of these guys as you can get your hands on.

I promise you will go meshugena!

5 out of 5 stars Louis Armstrong's All Stars Live!.......2002-01-09

Many critics believe Louis Armstrong's best work was limited to the innovative 1920s recordings with the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens. This recording shows that decades later, in 1956 and 1957, he was still a phenomenal live entertainer. Louis is joined on stage by the All Stars, originally formed in 1947, with an ever changing lineup that at the time of these recordings consisted of Trummy Young on trombone, Ed Hall on clarinet, Billy Kyle on piano, Dale Jones on bass and Barrett Deems on drums. The disc is set up to sound like it was a recording of a concert one night--although it is a compilation recorded over several nights. It opens with Armstrong's signature tune When It's Sleepy Time Down South, after which Louis does his traditional audience greeting. Then the band swings through some of the old favorites, including Indiana, a roaring version of Basin Street Blues, the finely played Struttin' with Some Barbecue, the nostalgic Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans, the upbeat On the Sunny Side of the Street, and the classic When the Saints Go Marching In. While Armstrong's years of helping to create a new American art form may have long passed, his trumpet playing and singing were never more able to please a crowd. It was his years of nonstop touring during this period that helped cement his reputation as genius and American icon.
