Amazon.com essential recording
A wonderful meeting of two institutions of American music, this 1954 album was the finest recording of Louis Armstrong's later career, with the great trumpeter-singer turning to material that was very close to his roots. Both W.C. Handy and Armstrong had a complex relationship with the blues, an essential source for both Handy's popular songs and Armstrong's improvisational art, and these recordings touch on the heart of the matter. On "Yellow Dog Blues," a product of Handy's own early and chance encounter with the rural blues, there's a majesty that recalls Armstrong's early recordings with Bessie Smith. Armstrong is clearly inspired by the classic material and the chance to stretch out on record, and his regular band of the period joins in perfectly. Trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, and singer Velma Middleton contribute stellar solos and support, while bassist Arvell Shaw and drummer Barrett Deems do an exceptional job of keeping the slower tempos rock steady. This is a deeply moving and consummately executed performance. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
Great, simply Great!.......2007-07-20
Could anything be better Needs 2000 stars.......2007-06-29
The sound here is great. It has some of the best of Louis's sound in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when despite the All-stars claims to reproduce the orginal pre-Swing sound of Armstrong's earlier groups, Louis shows the way he truly swung in both singing in playing far beyond the youthful athletics of the Chicago recordings. These blues swing so nice warm and easy, although some like his great recording of "The Saint Louis Blues" swing very hard. If you want to learn the basics of swing rhythm at a reasonable pace, I would advise listening to these recordings and trying to play along with them. (Of course, I would also recommend the great piano and rhythm section sides Basie cut to get out of his Decca Contract in the mid 1930s.)
There is something soooooo much more joyous about these recordings than any of Louis's recordings of these or similar tunes in the 1920s and 1930s. His voice and trumpet playing no longer strain but are sure of the mastery of the material. Both he and vocalist Velma Middleton seem to be really enjoying themselves with this material.
It must be stressed that Handy's real contribution was the combination of the Blues with the level of arrangement and composition that professional Black entertainers of his time--a time of a great explosion of both professional skill, knowledge, diversity of style, and polish--had obtained. His Blues including selections on this piece like "The St. Louis Blues" and "The Memphis Blues" and the immortal "Beale Street Blues" often combined Blues with all sorts of music popular at the time especially Ragtime, the reigning popular music of Handy's time in Memphis, with traces of Latin music like the habenero tango strain in the St Louis Blues. Yet, while quite willing to copyright these products of Black folk culture and create his own publishing business based on them (one of the first the realize the money in getting songs recorded as well as selling sheet music, Handy was insistent about the folk sources of his blues, as well as the fact that they were what Black folks demanded to dance to.
Getting Louis, himself a product of the generation that saw Jazz emerge as the child of the marriage of Blues and Ragtime given the tools of the high level of musicianship and formal musical knowledge consumated by Handy and his generation, to record these tunes was a stroke of Genius. You can hear Louis feeling happy and at home, but you can also hear a special reverence for the music, the time and the point of the music, as well how much BETTER the development of Jazz and Swing in the decades since Handy's days had made his ability to play these songs. It is no wonder that Handy himself cried tears of joy when he heard these recordings.
George Avakian who produced both the original recordings and the 1996 reissue on CD, spent about twenty years hunting down the best of the original recordings and takes, before rereleasing this really high quality recording.
A nice, wonderful, historic album that is pure joy and fun.
A "Must Have" for Lovers of Satchmo, Blues, or Jazz!!.......2007-04-22
The Beauty of Classical Jazz.......2006-08-13
I heard this album in the LP form at the beginnings of my explorations into jazz but, as the CD era started, I was warned that the 80's CD of "Armstrong plays W. C. Handy" contains inferior alternate versions.
The producer George Avakian explains in this 1997 CD what happened and how painstaking and meticolous research and restoration resulted in this issue, basically equall to the original album, although the recording company had lost not only masters but the back-up copies as well. So, all the compliments go to Mr. Avakian, the producer and the restorer of this music.
This is one of my favorite jazz albums and I feel it proves that Louis in the 50's could very well reach his Hot fives and Hot seven hights. Whether it is "Loveless love", "Chantez les-bas" or the ingenious and rightly famous "St. Louis Blues", Satchmo shines both through the clear sound of his trumpet and through the expressive groan and grumble of his vocal chords (how do such divine voices come about? Did he work on it or was it a gift?).
His accompanying ensemble is also great, particularly the explosive trombonist Trummy Young, who was rightly famous for his work in Lunceford's big band in the swing era, but seems liberated in Satchmo's All-stars concept - he propelles ensemble choruses and plays inspiring solos (Bigard is also great but his best work was done in the swing era with Ellington).
It is quite amazing that critics in the 50's didn't take Satchmo seriously enough but so it goes with music, cinema or anything else: Artists who still develops their concept when younger cats follow completely different leaders often go unnoticed. Fortunatelly, Armstrong was able to attract some of the non-jazz crowd and become popular entertainer, so he had a great amount of artistic liberty.
Additional attractions of this seminal album are rehearsing sequences and short interviews with Satchmo and W. C. Handy.

Don't expect a second line of denizens from Odessa to come marching down the street behind this band. Rather, you should steel yourself for energetic, aggressive, modern music with deep respect for the roots of klezmer but a determined forward approach and a bit of a sly, sideways grin. It's all fair game for this band that ruthlessly mixes Jewish theater with a Louis Armstrong downbeat or a Latin backbeat. Expert musicianship and tight chops are tempered by a sense of humor that produces songs to match zany titles like "Struttin' with Some Doner Kebab," "Moroccan Roller," and "Not Too Eggy." Whether it's Arab and Jewish jazz or rock and locks, this band produces a big sound. Accordion, clarinets, and saxophones dance with a heavy rhythm section, particularly induced by drummer Kevin O'Day and bass partner Arthur Kastler. Great tunes; not a tchotchke in the lot. --Louis GibsonCustomer Reviews:

You'd be dead wrong. I saw these guys play their songs from this CD at New Orleans and they TORE THE PLACE UP! These guys are unbelievable. You will not be able to keep yourself from dancing. Not only is their musicianship unbelievable, but they also know how to groove like no other.
If you can, I recommend you see them live. Barring that, the CD will do you just fine.

In recent years, a number of young bands have pushed the envelope of the traditional Yiddish music of klezmer by combining it with American pop influences. New York's Klezmatics have attracted the most attention with provocative album titles such as Rhythm & Jews and Jews with Horns, but no one has extended the possibilities of klezmer further than the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars. As their name implies, they combine the Eastern European music with their hometown's bacchanalian jazz and rhythm & blues. On The Big Kibosh, the septet adds elements of funk and avant-garde collage. At times they push their luck too far and lose the wonderful balance of old and new that marked their two earlier albums. On the other hand, these young players have become such impressive musicians that it's exciting to hear them take such chances. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

This spirited project from Beausoleil leader Michael Doucet brings together noted Cajun musicians while offering a traditional bayou feast for the ears. Accompanying a handful of Beausoleil musicians, drummer Mike Burch (River Road), Mitchell Reed (Mamou Prairie Band), and guitarist Christina Balfa (Balfa Toujours) all guest-appeared to mix up some spicy musical magic in Dockside Studios near Lafayette, Louisiana. The result is a down-home collection of old Cajun standards, waltzes, and Doucet originals that will please both country and Cajun listeners. The violins sing, the accordions dance, the guitars slip and slide. As yummy as a giant bowl of jambalaya. --Karen KarleskiCustomer Reviews:

For me this music was pure unadulterated fun! The tracks are SO catchy and musical I felt like grabbing my gumbo and strutting my stuff around the house! This CD has brought together many talented musicians for a jam session that is second to none. Give yourself a chance to REALLY listen to the improvisation and technique. It's great! I've listened to Cajun music before but nothing that was as appealing as this CD. Once it started I wanted it to go and go forever. If you're having a Cajun theme dinner with some friends, pop this CD in and crank up the volume! I dare you to NOT want to keep going after track #1!

catchy solid klezmer.......2003-12-16
The accordion, clarinet and violin are the lead instruments in this all instrumental album. Many songs are short, fast freilich's, written by the aptly named Jonathan Freilich, Robert Wagner, Glenn Hartman and the rest of the six piece band. Others are long, slow and sultry doinas and other are combinations, starting slow and building into a frenzy of intricate solos.
The Owl is a fluttery solo clarinet and a good example of the groups instrumental virtuosity. The title track starts slow and ends with an impossibly fast clarinet jam. Other songs use just one or two instruments. Jews Blues is more like a bulgar and could come straight out of Fiddler on the Roof. A couple tracks have reverb filled electric guitars shifting back and forth with swirling clarinets.
Unlike their previous albums, there is no saxophone and a couple of changes in band members. About half the songs are written by the band, the others being traditional klezmer melodies. A Heimesher Sher by Dave Tarras, the influential American clarinetist keeps with the original structure and sound but is performed with a rock guitar and electric bass. Also familiar to many will be Fun Tashlich also recorded by Cleveland's Yiddishe Cup Klezmer Band.
If you're looking to check out the band, or any good klezmer music, this is a solid example.
As a side note, we used Borvis, the catchy title track for our Intro to Recording class from the Cuyahoga Community College Recording Arts and Technology program taught by electronic recording artist Warren "Hanna" Harris. We listend to the piece repeatedly and discussed it's song structure, instrumentation and how it was recorded. Only Warren Harris would notice that that there is a breath from the left speaker in the first minute of the track. Students who had a hard time even pronouncing the word klezmer were humming the tune for the rest of the day.
