Is Will Smith an important rapper? The kind that deserves the awards, the honors, the accolades that the music industry foists upon him? Well, no. The words corny and safe might be applicable when describing the artist formerly known as the Fresh Prince. But dig this: corny and safe as he may be, why can't you stop singing "Getting Jiggy wit It" or why does your child love "Just the Two of Us," Smith's shameless ode to dads and their kids? Probably because Smith is nothing if not sincere. Yes, the tracks are obvious and leaden, and, no, Method Man won't have any sleepless nights when Smith lets loose with a rhyme. But give him this: Smith comes from the culture, even if he long ago left the streets. --Amy Linden

I Enjoyed This!.......2007-02-12
To be honest, right now in my life I'm not the biggest pop-music fan. I don't think pop music is 'bad' by any means and haven't got anything against the artists, it's just not what I focus on with music or the type of music I enjoy the most. But there was a time when I did listen to the radio more often, go to the bars and hit the college parties. And at that time, this album was extremely popular! Everyone pretty much knows Will Smith, and if you remember when this album was released back in 1997, it was at a time when he was probably at the pinnacle of his stardom. He'd just featured in several high-profile movies like "Independence Day" and "Men in Black" and seemingly no-one could get enough of Will Smith.
Don't get me wrong though - there were several people that really did have enough of Will Smith. Let`s face it, several tracks on this album were way overplayed. Video channels, the radio, commercials... you name it. But stepping away for a few years and then looking back, they were catchy and fun tunes and followed the same pattern - sample a classic R&B track and update it with new beats and samples. "Miami" was one of them with a neat sort of beat- although as another might've mentioned, he sampled a classic track for the rhythm... I want to say it was George Benson's. Another popular track was the "Men in Black" theme... I can remember my summer job when this was always playing. He sampled Patrice Russian's track - for a glimpse of that one, the original is in the movie "Big", featuring Tom Hanks. "Just the Two of Us" was another track that was nice- for him and his son and "Gettin Jiggy with It" was a track I just liked... it was nice, light and had a good pulse to it.
It's easy for me to recommend this one - it reminds me of so many good times and just how different things were in the US then... to me, at least. Internet boom, 1.15 gallon for gas (which helped a poor workin' college kid!), etc. I also liked Will Smith's approach. His music's never really been negative and he tends to at least tell a story in the songs and entertain you. That's his work in general - even from the old days with Jazzy Jeff, who's done some stuff with Defected's "In the House". And while he sampled loads and it isn't particularly original, it's still a fun album. I also like that you can understand what the heck he's saying and you can tell he enjoyed making this album. So, you probably have already, but check it out!

Big Willie Style contains three of Will Smith's greatest hits. We've heard them a million times, and quite frankly they have worn off their appeal. Now the downfall of the CD is not that the three best songs are over played, but that the rest of the CD is mediocre at best. To someone really dying to have the popular songs on this CD, I'd suggest legally download the few songs you want and save the rest of your money. I am a huge supporter or Will Smith and his clean lyrics, but I hope in the future he will put together a more complete album.

Daring Attempt to Show How Rap Doesn't Have to Be Violent & Vulgar!.......2006-03-23
My introduction to this album and to Will Smith from a musical and not acting standpoint was when I took up hip-hop dance lessons years back and each week the instructor kept playing "Y'All Know" and "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It". I thought those were great tracks and I'd heard from a colleague of mine who was going through a painful divorce who had a little son how much he loved and related to "Just the Two of Us" and I'd always liked Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots" a.k.a. the track Will ripped off to use as the music for "Men In Black" (trust me, the original is far, far better)and so I thought I had nothing to lose and so decided to take a chance and promptly got the cd.
I was very pleasantly surprised to find other great tracks such as "Miami" and the last track "Just Cruisin'" which for some reason isn't listed among the tracks above. I've always liked albums that flowed and sounded cohesive from first to last and the humorous interludes with Keith B Real is a great device which achieves this brilliantly. The sound quality is also very good and so is Will's rapping. His lyrics on "Just the Two of Us" are simply brilliant and anyone with kids, mums and dads alike, can relate to what is clearly heartfelt, unconditional love of parent for child that's so eloquently expressed on this track.
Who says rap has to be violent and vulgar? Will shows here that he can still rap among the best of them. Highly recommended for lovers of rap and hip-hop with a pinch of humour added on for good measure.

FOR ME, THIS ALBUM MAKES THE MOVIE.......2006-12-29
i saw THE MACK. i just ask too many questions when it comes to blaxploitation films. i do dig the soundtrack. the only thing is though is that it is a bit too mellow for me. i like them raw and rough. however, on a boring day, i can put this on and it can be my lemonade vibe. willie hutch's music has that effect on me. sunshine in the shade..............................................................
More than your typical blaxploitation soundtrack.......2005-06-11
On THE MACK, the soundtrack to to the cult film starring Max Julien, Roger Mosley (pre- "Magnum P.I.") and Richard Pryor, 70s Motown artist Willie Hutch dazzles with his "Bobby Womack meets Bill Withers" vocals, earthy lyrics, southern soul-style guitar picking and excellent string and horn arrangements.
The two singles from this album ("Brother's Gonna Work It Out" and "Slick) became top 20 r&b hits, while the respectably sexy "I Choose You" was a popular black radio album cut. Other highlights from this set include the mournful "Mama's Song", the wistful "Now That It's All Over" and the pumpin' title track.
Like most blaxploitation soundtracks of the 70's, THE MACK features wah-wah guitars and sooperbaaad "chick" background singers. However, these cliches actually enhance these thought-provoking songs. Overall, THE MACK is like Curtis Mayfield's SUPERFLY. Both soundtracks have seven songs and two instrumentals as well as lyrics that act as a Greek chorus to warn the listeners about the dangers of street life.
Choose this cd please.......2005-06-08
If you had the opportunity to see the movie the Mack, you know
how important the soundtrack is to the movie. Brothers gonna
work it out,Mama, Vampin' the songs go on and on! Without a
doubt my favorite is Now that it's all over. I tell you what
go and rent the movie and then I bet you will want the soundtrack. The music is performed well and the songs are well
written especially the love songs. Enjoy this one on me.

Willie Hutch - The Original Mack.......2004-03-18
This is definitely an a cd to buy if you are from the old school like I am. This is a part of the "Blackploitation" films I grew up watching in the 1970's. The music is original and the movie even though outdated, fits into some of the lifestyles that people are trying to emulate today. There will never be another "GOLDIE" so get the movie as well. You'll be glad you did.
Wille Hutch is the man!!!!!.......2003-10-22
This is a great ssoundtrack I wish that I could give this album more than 5 stars. This album gets 5 stars just for this bad song that is on here called "I choose you" this song is so bad that when I play this album I have to listen to I Choose you at least three times this is an incredible song also and there are also other good songs on here "Brother's Gonna Work It Out, Mack Man got to get over, slick, and more this is a great album if you like the movie the mack and the blaxploitation era then you will definitely like this album so therefore I would recommend anyone who likes the blaxploitation era and Willie Hutch to buy this album you will not go wrong!!!!!

strong singer.......2006-08-07
Little Willie John brought it vocally. you can put him vocally right there with Sam Cooke&Jackie Wilson. LWJ could wail&Bring it. these songs are a testimony to his depth&overall vibe on any song.when you hear this collection you are gonna hear a true Soul Singer bringing it.
The songs were not the original -very disappointed.......2006-07-17
The songs were remix - remakes were not the original - I'm quite disappointed - you cannot fool a 70 year old African American who danced to Little Willie John's music in the fifties.
Thank You!
William Edward John... the REAL "Mr. Soul"........2006-05-31
I've heard many old heads say (The Godfather of Soul, J. Brown even says it) that this guy was better than the great Sam Cooke who I once nearly worshipped. I've been able to listen to this CD as well as two other LWJ CDS all the way through, and I have to admit that those people were right.. William E. John is the best. I refuse to speak of him in past tense, because there's nothing past tense about his talent. I'am totally and completely sold out on this man. It's just unbelieveable that he's being almost totally forgotten about, overlooked and overshadowed by inferior vocalists. The man should have been the "IT" guy during his era and wasn't.. it's a shame. I've heard so, so many great singers, but this man outclasses them ALL.
The difinitive Little Willie John collection.......2004-06-24
Although I wouldn't be completely happy with this cd alone, it needs to be bought hand in hand with Rhino's generally exellent "Fever: The Best Of Little Willie John", that having been said, this cd still gets the edge, between the two, for the inclusion of teh quentessential Little Willie John track "I'm Sticking With You Baby", not on the Rhino comp. This cd however has more slower songs with too many backup singers, more reminiscent of doo-wop, and the Rhino cd, has almost all the jump blues and blues sides, so it makes for an easier listen. As where this cd is best on the 1st half, which is more jump blues and r&b, and the 2nd half is almost exclusively ballads, that haven't dated too well. So if the Rhino disc included "I'm Sticking With You Baby", it would definately have gotten the edge. Also this cd has 24 tracks to Rhino's 20. Both cd's have some of teh same songs, and a lot of different ones, making it essential to pick them both up. Fever is of course here, as well as All Around The World, Home At Last, Leave My Kitten Alone and the essential hits and r&b stompers, making this a nice intro cd to John's work. These 50's tracks are seminal r&b/blues/jump blues sides, and not as gutsy as Hank Ballards singing, John has a rich almost sensual voice. And a very appealing voice it is, slick and sophistocated, and as urbam as the blues can be, he sounds best when belting out a jump blues, and doesn't hadle the ballads as well, with the exception of teh mod tempo numbers like Fever where he uses his sensuality and smoothness, to pull it off(though Peggy Lee would later make it a hit). This is good stuff, thogh not every track is a gem, the jump blues sides are spectacular, and this cd needs to be owned by jumpin' jive fans, it'll be something new to lindy hop to.
Little Willie John is the Best.......2003-08-23
I am a soul music fanatic and I received this CD for my birthday this past July. It is truly one of the best CDs I have and if it were a record I would have worn out the grooves because I've played it so often. My favorite cut, Heartbreak, is in my mind the perfect song. Little Willie's powerful voice draws you into the music. The big down beat with lots of horns just rocks you out of your chair. My other favorite cuts are Sufferin with the Blues, You're a Sweetheart, Cottage for Sale, I love you, but the truth is...I love Little Willie's sound and every cut on this CD. I often listen to one or two cuts on a CD then hit the eject. This one I listen to all 25 cuts and then replay and replay. If you can only buy one Little Willie John CD. If you can only buy one Soul CD...buy this one. You just might become as big of a Little Willie fan as me.
I was a DJ for 10 years in the 60's and early 70's. I also promoted shows for James Brown in the Northeast. How I wish I had a chance to see Little Willie on stage but he was slightly before my time. It's apparent that all the great artists I did meet and played their music were deeply influenced by Mr. John. Including the great James Brown and Jackie Wilson.

Through the first half of the '70s, and intermittently thereafter, Willie Hutch was the closest thing the Motown stable had to a Curtis Mayfield, from his cool, guitar-and-percussion based soul numbers (and the strings that sweetened them) on down to his cap and shades. An ace songwriter who'd cowritten "I'll Be There" for the Jackson 5, he followed Mayfield's path into scoring movies--Foxy Brown and The Mack (for which he wrote the enduring "Brother's Gonna Work It Out")--but his voice was earthier, more in the Sam Cooke tradition, and his lyrics were more concerned with the redemptive power of love than with street terror. This smart career condensation also jumps forward for his '82 dance-floor semi-hit "In and Out." --Douglas Wolk

A True Masterpiece.......2007-03-12
Now this is the cd that played in ALL basements throughout America! The red light bulb is in, while you are watching from the door, your momma and daddy, bumping Willie Hutch with all of their friends! This is a classic that you have to add to your collection! I am just waiting on the rest of Willie Hutch's music to get released on CD! Whoever reads this and has that connection? Lets make it happen! Rest in peace Willie!
SLICK WILLIE !.......2006-07-18
"SLICK" will probably be one of his biggest songs, Willie Hutch will be most remembered for, along with "BROTHER'S GONNA WORK IT OUT", "IN & OUT", "LOVE POWER", and "PARTY DOWN". Let's not forget he wrote "I'LL BE THERE" for the Jackson 5. He will be sadly missed . I'm sure he's in Motown Heaven !!
Yet another one missed on the radar !.......2006-05-25
Willie Hutch passed in 2005 - - a unique figure in soul music, because like Bunny Siegler, he wrote the songs people sang, could have been a hit maker himself, but spent most his time behind the scenes. Oddly, his strongest works in my mind were the stuff he did for soundtracks like THE MACK and FOXY BROWN - - albums who's soundtracks may not not be as famous as SHAFT and SUPERFLY but are pretty much as funky, bad*ass yet mellow and groovy as you get - - and strangely enough, track by track very hit oriented. (Songs, not just orchestrations!)
Sadly, Hutch never became the superstar he deserved (though its great to see him on some of those old Soul Train episodes floating around!) I think its really sad - - He reminds me a lot of yet another "in the shadows" soul singer: Leroy Hutson - - both had very strong songwriting and orchestrating skills, distinct *driving* styles, yet are not as well known as they should be. - - And if you're not sold on what I'm saying yet, hopefully this great compilation will serve as THE PROOF - - My strong advice however is to get MACK and FOXY instead... great albums listenable straight through!!!
Does not 'got' the glow.......2005-08-02
How can you make a Willie Hutch's greatest hits cd and not include the song 'Glow' from the Last Dragon soundtrack? You just can't, and that is why this CD is complete garbage. 'Glow' is not only Willie Hutch's greatest hit, but perhaps the greatest hit of any artist ever. Willie Hutch knows that it "takes sacrifice, it takes hard work, it's a way of life" to create timeless classics like "Glow", and that is why he has "reached the upper level." Willie Hutch has got the glow, but this cd doesn't, and that is why it should be boycotted...if anyone is even purchasing this cd to begin with.
Nice CD.......2005-02-11
Nice Cd. I would love to get a copy of "Fully Exposed".

WOW.......2005-09-13
I did not expect a CD full of great songs. WOW. Gotta tell others about this one!
What if Julius Cheeks was Sam Cookes father?.......2005-04-13
He would probably sound like Willie Hightower. Imagine Sam on a serious bender and singing first thing in the morning. Willie has an awsome rasp to his voice that gives these songs a serious edge. But don't think of him as a Sam Cooke clone with a roughed up voice. He adds plenty of his own style to this great collection of soul songs. Dig ya hear.
The ultimate R & B Album.......2005-03-25
I stumbled upon this c.d. and I have to tell you it's brilliant. If you love good old soul like Sam Cooke and Otis you gotta pick up this c.d.. It gives you chills and tears all in the same song. I wish I could write some curse words to show you how F*#%ing good this album is.

I can't find one really catchy song here and the voices sound rather weak. They try to be a bit like TLC, but they fail.
I'm feelin' it.......2001-06-05
Can't get enough is my favorite, I've been sweating it since I heard it in 1999. I even went so far as to take my friend's single, but I lost it. ...
It's not that bad.......1999-10-16
It's not as bad as the person below said it was. Besides, how can you rely on one person's opinion? Everyone has different tastes in music as well as everything else! My favorite songs are 24, I'm not your girlfriend, and Can't get enough (both the original AND the remix)!!
never comin' back........1999-04-08
it is easy to compare willie max with a string of other girl groups who have broken in the past couple of years. allure, total, destiny's child. unlike allure, however, willie max has not demonstrated an ability to really wail. unlike, total, their public image in neither brash enough nor defined enough to hold public interest. and unlike destiny's child, willie max's _bona fide_ does not have a break-away hit on par with "no, no, no". what willie max does have is harmony that could only be acheived by spending large quantities of time together (in this case, having been raised together, as sister) and potential, with the proper material, to come back strong on their next release. willie max posses a strong understanding of each of their own vocal abilities, as well as those of their group mates; this is a precious commodity which, with the proper guidance, could transform them into the next pointer sisters. at this point, however, you r&b girl group dollar would be better spent on 4KaST's _any weather_.

"We Can't Be Stopped" it's not (2.5/5).......2007-01-30
After the national success of Geto Boys' excellent 1991 LP "We Can't Be Stopped," member Willie D soon left the group and released his second solo album, "I'm Goin' Out Lika Soldier," within a year. It's pretty evident that Willie was trying to capitalize on the success of that album, because many elements of that album are also present here. The bare bones production, yelling chants for hooks, and delivering lyrics that are extremely controversial. But the problem is that none of the material on this album is even close in quality or effectiveness as the music on "We Can't Be Stopped." Where all of that album comes across as heartfelt and relevant, "I'm Goin' Out Lika Soldier" is rarely so. I believe Willie D to be an excellent MC, and I have always loved his Geto Boys work and really love him because he's so multi-dimensional. But on this release, he is actually quite one dimensional. Every song here is an angry, crazy effort to come across as wild and controversial. I really like Willie when he's crazy like that, but I also like the songs where he digs deeper and shows a little social consciousness, and there's not really any of that here. You sort of get the feeling that he's trying to be controversial simply for the sake of it. The production actually sounds quite dated for a 1992 release, mostly lacking the southern-fried simple genius of "We Can't Be Stopped." There are certainly a handful of good songs on "I'm Goin' Out Lika Soldier," a few that capture the fist-pumping rebelliousness of the best Geto Boys songs, but the lack of original subject matter and repetitiveness make it an album that would be okay to pass on.
After the intro, the album begins with the title track, which may well be the best on the album. It's one of the few that really recaptures the charismatic anger of the early Geto Boys group albums, and Willie's delivery and rhymes are quite effective. "Pass the Piote" is actually quite good as well, drawing in the listener with a good hook chant and opening rap. Things begin to slow down on "Die," a lethargically slow and predictable threatening song that isn't original. "Clean Up Man" has a terrible chorus and is poorly executed. "U Ain't No Ganksta" shows decent production and delivery, but Willie's rhymes feel very familiar. "Trenchcoats-N-Gangsta Hats" is a highlight on the album, a rallying cry for the mobster attire of the old days. "F... Rodney King" was obviously this album's most controversial song, a song condemning the social leader as an Uncle Tom and a softie. This song is pretty effective, but I think it could be better, and the outro that depicts Rodney being murdered on the street is a little distasteful. "Go Back 2 School" is a pretty good but forgettable song telling kids to get an education. "U Still a N..." is an odd and awkward mix of reggae and rap. "Little Hooker" condemns a certain woman, and the awful "Yo P My D" is just painful. The album ends with the just-decent "What's Up N..." and one of the better songs, "My Alibi."
Over the years I've heard this album described as slept-on, and it's true that it didn't get the right promotion or attention for a Geto Boys project, but as far as I'm concerned for an album to be slept on it actually has to be a great album. The truth is that "I'm Goin' Out Lika Soldier" is a weak effort from a great MC, an album of standard and predictable 1992 gangsta fare without anything to really set it apart. It might be a cliché, but I'd say to stick with the classics in this case, as "We Can't Be Stopped" and fellow Geto Boy Scarface's classic album "The Diary" are far superior efforts to this, and as this is now out of print paying $50+ would simply be outrageous. This isn't one of those lost gems of the Rap-a-Lot/Geto Boys catalog. For those looking for a Willie D solo album, I might suggest his 1994 effort "Play Witcha Mama," an album far superior to this one.
Classic!!.......2005-07-04
I still have the original cd that I got in '92! This album brings back alot of memories of my crazy and wild days! I'm from the Philly area, and I think me and my boys were the only ones around that knew about Willie D and the Geto Boys. My favorite songs on the album would be "Trenchcoats & Gangster hats" and "My Alibi" But over all definatly a sentimental favorite from my teenage days! Great album from Beginning to end Willie D never pulls any punches! He's a wild dude!
willie d is the best . i want this cd........1999-08-05
his music is great i have listened to his music ever since hes been singing. ive bought this cd and controversy but ive lost them i would like o get them again.
Amazon is the only place you can get this CD........1999-04-03
Willies style of rapping is far different than any one elses he mixes up somany different tunes and lyrics. I mean one minute he'l be singing in a rasta tune and talkin about passin the Paeody, and the next he'l be singin in a porno kind of beat talkin about stealin some guy's girl. But as for the cd it is as good as they get.

IN THE WORDS OF PROFESSOR X: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH".......2006-12-29
now this is the willie hutch stuff that i envisioned in my mind!!!! this has beats, grooves, rawness, and soul to the bone. this is my ocean view cd. when i hear this music here, i daydream in the purest forms of instantaneousness. it reminds me in an odd way of those 70's period johnny "guitar" watson albums. mr. hutch also has the curtis mayfield feel in those 70's songs. ENJOY THE RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!!!
RIP.......2005-09-25
very Talented Songwriter,Vocalist&Guitar player from the Sam Cooke School of music making which You Can Hear Sam's Influence on Willie Hutch.Hutch could shout Vocally&then Smooth it out on the Smooth Jams. very Under-rated Cat who should have been given more respect.I enjoyed His Soundtrack work on the Mack&Foxy Brown. not to mention He was a co-Writer of the jackson Five's "I'll be there". very Talented Cat.He could balance the Funk&the Slow-Jam.RIP
The Rest Of The Best.......2005-05-05
This UK compilation has very little overlap with the US-released *Best of Willie Hutch.* Here we can delight in mostly fast-paced and mid-tempo cuts that show how well Mr. Hutch could groove. The two collections provide a good slice of Hutch's recordings from the 70s (plus "In & Out," one of two tracks that are on both CDs). These compilations showed me that although Hutch's recordings from 1975 onward became poppier and smoother, they also became more melodically complex and beautiful. He gave up the pastiche of Isaac Hayes/Curtis Mayfield wah wah sounds and focused more on his unique strengths. I'm surprised at how overlooked he was during the 70s-- he offered genuine soulfulness and has a wonderful voice. These are, in my opinion, fine R&B tracks from a talented singer/songwriter.
The greatest soul brother.......2003-10-28
Hutch is the man, his music is timeless. "Homeboy" Hutch should be thought of in the same breath as Marvin , Stevie, Smokey, in the ranks of the greatest of the Motown/Tamila era.
